Joseph ‘Joe’ Wesley Henkle III 1949-2003
EUGENE, Ore. — Joseph “Joe” Wesley Henkle III, 53, died June 11. He was born Oct. 4, 1949, at Great Bend, the son of Joseph W. II and Lea Webster Henkle. He married
Monica R. Glahn June 18, 1977, in Santa Ana, Calif. A resident of Eugene since 1983, coming from Kansas and California, he was an automotive mechanic. Henkle was a member of Grace Community Fellowship, Marine Corps League “Devil Dogs” and Racing Association, all of Eugene. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of Vietnam, serving two tours. Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Amber Plant of Lebanon, Ore., Alisha Henkle and Kellea Henkle, both of Eugene; his mother of Mountaineer, N.M.; one sister, Leta McTovish of Mountaineer; and one grandson. Memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Private family inurnment will be at Roseburg National cemetery at Roseburg, Ore. Richard Lee McMillan 1908-2003
ST. JOHN — Richard Lee McMillan, 94, died June 10 at his residence in St. John. He was born Nov. 2, 1908, in rural St. John, the son of A. Henry and Hattie McMillan. He was a 1929 graduate of St. John High School. He married
Madeleine F. Durham July 30, 1939, at Kinsley. A resident of St. John since 1953, he was a farmer, truck driver, oil field worker and REA operator. McMillan was a member of First United Methodist Church, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of St. John. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving with the Seventh Air Fleet at Bougainville in the South Pacific. Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Donna McMillan of Los Angeles, Calif., Alice Ann Lockridge of Renton, Wash., and Lora Lee Hase of Bellevue, Wash.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Howard McMillan, Paul McMillan, Raymond McMillan and Robert McMillan; five sisters, Dayle Byer, Theresa Christian, Adeline Hendershot, Juanita Higgins and Margaret Schuessler. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Minnis Chapel Inc. of St. John, with the Rev. W. Harlan Rittgers officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Gladys L. Steinert 1923-2003
DODGE CITY — Gladys L. Steinert, 80, died June 10 at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City. She was born May 2, 1923, at Bunker Hill, the daughter of Gottfrey and Grace Hoch Baral. She was a graduate of Elm Creek School in Russell County. She married
Lester L. Steinert March 2, 1941, at Debuk. He died Feb. 27, 1988. A resident of Dodge City since 1957, coming from the Russell area, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Steinert was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church of Dodge City. Survivors include one son, Lee Steinert of Dodge City; one daughter, Kathryn Lee of Dodge City; one brother, Luther Baral of Bunker Hill; two sisters, Mary Cooper and Betty Brozek, both of Lucas; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Louis Steinert; two brothers, Arthur Baral and Floyd Baral; and one sister, Bessie Hupfer. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Dr. James W. Wiggs Jr. 1937-2003
YANKTON, S.D. — Dr. James W. Wiggs Jr., 66, died June 7 at Avera Yankton Care Center in Yankton. He was born Sept. 22, 1936, at Berwyn, Ill. He graduated from medical school at Indiana University Medical Center, earning his MD in 1963, retiring in 2000. He married
Mary Ann. He was a practicing neurologist for 37 years in Indianapolis, Ind.; San Antonio, Texas; Great Bend and Yankton. He served at Yankton Medical Clinic for 14 years and as a privately practicing physician in Great Bend for 17 years. He was an adjunct or associate professor of neurology for the Universities of Kansas, Texas and South Dakota. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, John Anthony Lahey-Wiggs, James Kevin Wiggs and Adam Bearnard Buhmann-Wiggs; one daughter, Chala Marie Wiggs; his mother, Augusta Wiggs; three sisters, Cathy Mahaffey, Colleen Ataras and Camille Osborn; and three grandchildren. Rosary will be at 7 tonight at Kostel Funeral Home in Yankton, followed by a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at St. Benedict Catholic Church of Yankton, with the Rev. Rod Farke officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross cemetery in Indianapolis at a later date. Richard Wayne Dougherty Sr., 82, of Great Bend, died June 6 at his ranch in Russell County. He was born Nov. 30, 1920, at Osborne County, the son of Ora and Mary Stiverson Dougherty. He married
Irene Flake Sept. 25, 1988, in Albert. A resident of Great Bend since 1947, coming from Abilene, he was president of Mid-Continent LP Service Inc. Dougherty was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Peace Lutheran choir, both of Albert, Masonic Lodge, Shrine Club, American Legion, Elks Lodge, Lake Wilson Area Association and Propane Marketers of Kansas. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Dick Dougherty of Great Bend; one daughter, Mary Lu Robinson of Larned; one stepdaughter, Jackie Flake of Kansas City; two brothers, Neil Dougherty and Jim Dougherty, both of Denver, Colo.; one sister, Maymie Rolfs of Denver; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and Aliease Dougherty, mother of Dick, Mary Lu and Ann. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Ann Miller; one brother, Warren Dougherty; and one sister, Helen Haase. Prayer service will be at 7 tonight at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Theodore Frank Deal, 100, of Great Bend, died June 6 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Nov. 15, 1902, at Barton County the son of William Peter and Mary Henrietta Janne Deal. He was a lifetime Barton County resident. Survivors include two nieces, Lynda Wood of Newport Beach, Calif., and Patricia Abel of Bath, Pa. He was preceded in death by one brother, Walter Deal; and two sisters, Flora Marie Sardou and Elsie Deal. Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Great Bend cemetery with the Rev. LARNED — Steven Wayne Gillett, 34, died June 8 at Dodge City. He was born July 17, 1968, at Larned, the son of David Wayne and Vicki Stoddard Gillett. He was a 1986 graduate of Larned High School, attended Dodge City Community College and North Central Kansas Area Vo-Tech School in Beloit. A lifetime resident of Larned, he was an electrician for Haynes Electric of Larned for 14 years and was a part-time truck driver for Ward Feed Yard of Larned. Gillett was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Larned Country Club, both of Larned, and Sand Hills Golf Club in Kinsley. Survivors include his parents of Larned; two brothers, Gary Wayne Gillett and Brian Wayne Gillett, both of Larned; one half-brother, Eric Gillett of Manhattan; grandmothers, Armella Stoddard of Kinsley and Olga Gillett of Larned. He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Dianna Gillett. Parish vigil will be at 7 tonight at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. Philip Ward Felton, 91, of Great Bend, died June 7 at Kenwood Plaza in St. John. He was born Aug. 23, 1911, at McPherson County, the son of Ray B. and Mary E. McGill Felton. He was a 1929 graduate of Great Bend High School and attended McPherson College and Kansas State University. He married
Nora A. Zutavern Aug. 31, 1933, at Great Bend. She died Aug. 13, 1995. A resident of Great Bend, coming from Pratt, he was an employee of McCurdy Hatchery and an accountant for the former Wedell Inc. until retiring in 1982. Felton was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ of Great Bend, Kiwanis Club, Great Bend Elks, High Rise Kitchen Band, Great Bend Male Chorus and Hoisington Swinging Stars Square Dance Club. Survivors include three sons, Joe Felton of Santa Cruz, Calif., David Felton of Buffalo, N.Y., and Ray Felton of Stafford; one daughter, Mary Crockett of Colorado Springs, Colo.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A resident of Newton, coming from Hutchinson and Ellinwood, she was a retired secretary for ASCS of Reno County, a bookkeeper for DeLoss Smith Senior Center in Hutchinson and a volunteer sheriff patrol officer in Reno County. Mrs. Kater was a member of First Baptist Church in Hutchinson. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Edward Stucky of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one stepson, Charles Kater of Topeka; two brothers, William Ahlgrim of Ellinwood and Robert Ahlgrim of Norman, Okla.; one sister, Nellie Studman of Emporia; and two step-grandchildren. Virginia Shull April 4, 1947, at Wichita. A longtime Hoisington resident, he was a retired conductor for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad. Deines was a member of First United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge No. 331 A.F. & A.M., and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7428, all of Hoisington, and American Legion Post 37 of McAllen. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include his wife of Alamo, Texas; two sons, David Deines of Wichita and Dale Deines of Salina; one daughter, Linda Varner of Wildwood, Mo.; two brothers, Lawrence Deines of Great Bend and Marvin LaVern Deines of Smyra, Ga.; two sisters, Edna Milberger of Russell and Bernice Swopes of Ponca City, Okla.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Herman Deines and Arthur Deines; and one sister, Martha Deines. Dick Cunningham Dec. 7, 1935, at Kinsley. He died Aug. 19, 1973. A lifelong resident of Rush County, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Cunningham was a member of Women’s Relief Corp. of Rush Center. Survivors include three daughters, Audrey Gough of Columbia, Mo., Marjorie Ochs of Rush Center and Gloria Renz of Albert; and one sister, Celene Hester of Great Bend; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Richard Cunningham and Lowell Cunningham; three brothers, Floyd Cooley, Thayne Cooley and Dean Cooley; and one sister, Reita Cooley.
