Captain Michael Travis Cates 1972- 2003
FORT WORTH, TEXAS — Captain Michael Travis Cates, 31, died April 9 at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Milwaukee, Wis. He was born March 27, 1972, at Killeen, Texas, the son of Raymond Allen and Rebecca Lynn Miller Cates. He was a lifetime resident of Texas. He graduated from Trinity High School, Euless, Texas, in 1990 and Terrant County Junior College with an associate degree. He also attended Columbia University in Louisiana receiving his bachelor’s degree in business. He attended flight school in Fort Worth, Texas, and was a flight instructor and aerobatic pilot at the NW Regional and Hicks Airports in Texas. He was employed by Skyway Airlines based out of Milwaukee, Wis., where he was captain of a Donier 328 jet. Travis married
Kim Schmidt. He was a member of Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Keller, Texas. Travis’ hobbies included professional karoke singing, scuba diving, boating and water skiing, horseback riding, baseball and especially his many friends. Travis is survived by his parents, Raymond and Rebecca Cates of Haslet, Texas; one son, Sean Michael Cates and one daughter, Aubrey Ann Cates, both of Fort Worth; his fiancee, Rebecca Zorns of Fort Worth; a brother, Jason Ray and his wife, Rebekah Lynn Cates of Wichita; a nephew, Brodie Cates and a niece, Jayden Cates, both of Wichita; his grandmothers, June Miller and Thelma Cates, both of Claflin; his great-great-grandpa Robert L. Miller of El Dorado; 35 uncles and aunts and 63 cousins. Travis was preceded in death by his grandfathers Robert J. Miller and Vivan E. Cates. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. this afternoon to 9 tonight and from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington, and from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Claflin. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church in Claflin. Funeral Mass will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. John Maes officiating. Burial will be in Claflin Cemetery. Margaret A. Welch 1904-2003
HUTCHINSON — Margaret A. Welch, 99, died April 9 at Dillon Living Center in Hutchinson. She was born Feb. 24, 1904, at Fontana, the daughter of Clinton and Grace Flook Brewington. She married
George B. Welch Nov. 20, 1921, at Liberal. He died Feb. 27, 1970. A longtime Hutchinson resident, coming from Great Bend, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Welch was a member of Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Marjorie Beery of Hutchinson; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Jack Welch and James Welch; two grandsons, William Welch and Michael Welch; one granddaughter, Margaret Jean Welch; one great-grandson, Michael Welch; and one great-great-granddaughter, Casey McConnell. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fairlawn Burial Park Mausoleum in Hutchinson with the Rev. Alan D. Stambaugh officiating. William D. Adams 1944-2003
WICHITA — William D. Adams, 58, died April 7 at his residence in Wichita. He was born Aug. 15, 1944, in Great Bend, the son of Eugene W. and Ruth Hurt Adams. A resident of Wichita, coming from Lyons and Great Bend, he was a former employee of the Coleman Company in Wichita. Survivors include one son, Matthew Adams of Wichita; his mother, Ruth Laudick of Hoisington; two brothers, Robert E. Adams and Dale Adams, both of Wichita; four sisters, Connie Weber of Wichita, Julie Tubbs of Levant, Marla Breitenbach of Shawnee and Denise Elliott of Olathe; and one grandchild. Jerome T. ‘Jack’ Axman 1923-2003
OLMITZ — Jerome T. “Jack” Axman, 79, died April 8 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born July 1, 1923, at Barton County, the son of Joseph F. and Mary Stoss Axman. He was a 1942 graduate of Olmitz High School. He married
Betty Mae Smolik May 18, 1953. A lifetime Olmitz resident, he was a farmer and stockman. Axman was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Council 2100 and a former Otis-Bison USD 403 school board member. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Mike Axman and Joe F. Axman, both of Olmitz, and Paul Axman of Hoisington; three daughters, Lillian Palsmeier of Conway Springs, Barb Boldt of Oakley and Rita Hickel of Hoisington; one brother, Joseph B. Axman of Great Bend; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Judy Axman; two brothers, Ben Axman and Hank Axman; and one grandson, Joseph Jerome Axman. Wake service will be at 7:30 tonight, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary, both at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. George Y. Gross 1900-2003
NESS CITY — George Y. Gross, 103, died April 8 at Ness County Long Term Care Center in Ness City. He was born April 7, 1900, at Merkel, Russia, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Butherus Gross. He married
Alma Eichman Sept. 8, 1922, at La Crosse. A resident of Ness City since 1951, coming from southwest of Bazine, he was a farmer and carpenter. Gross was a member of United Methodist Church and Odd Fellows Lodge, both of Ness City. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Jerry Gross of Bazine; two daughters, Opal Steider of Sun City West, Ariz., and Celesta Reed of Rochelle, Ill.; one sister, Martha Milberger of Ness City; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 30 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Berdina Eibert; four brothers, Jake Gross, Henry Gross, Adam Gross and Raymond Gross; seven sisters, Elizabeth Erb, Amelia Ritter, Mary Weber, Pauline Bacon, Hanna Cox, Edna Gross and Eva Gross. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at Ness City Cemetery. Vernon Ray Phillips 1940-2003
ANAHUAC, Texas — Vernon Ray Phillips, 62, died March 24 at his home in Anahuac. He was born Sept. 13, 1940, near Saxman, the son of Claude and Clarice North Phillips. He was a graduate of Alden High School. He married
Nancy Manwarren in 1959. A longtime resident of Kansas, he was a dental lab technician. Phillips was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and National Association of Dental Labs. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Medical Corps. Survivors include one son, Anthony Phillips of Manhattan; one daughter, Lenora Engel of McPherson; his mother of Sterling; three sisters, Lillian Spradley of Liberty, Texas, Sarah Seitz of Ellinwood and Wanda Doran of Sterling; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Timothy Phillips; one brother, Leon Phillips; and one sister, Mary Hite. Inurnment will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Alden Cemetery. The body has been cremated. Fellowship for family and friends will follow at Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, 1012 W. Main St., Lyons. ELLINWOOD — Mary Louise Brungardt Sack, 90, died April 6 at Missouri Valley, Iowa. She was born Feb. 14, 1913, south of Victoria, the daughter of Mike J. and Agatha Bollig Brungardt. She married
Casper G. Sack June 12, 1935, at Hays. He died Sept 26, 1999. A longtime Ellinwood resident, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Sack was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella, all of Ellinwood, and Fraternal Order of the Eagles of Hays. Survivors include one son, Marvin E. Sack of St. Louis, Mo.; one daughter, Evelyn M. Lynch of Missouri Valley; one brother, Edwin Brungardt of Aurora, Colo.; and one sister, Neva Kolb of Lincoln, Neb.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Rosary will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood, followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m. at the church. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Herbert Lewis Phillips II 1926-2003
HEIZER — Herbert Lewis Phillips II, 77, died April 7 at his home. He was born Jan. 24, 1926, at Dawson, N.M., the son of Herbert Lewis and Bertha M. Shuff Phillips. He married
Cecil Marie McCullough Sept. 21, 1944, at Wichita. She died May 24, 2001. A Great Bend area resident, coming from Augusta, he was a carpenter, salesman, hearing aid dealer and pawn broker, all of Great Bend. Phillips was a member of Masonic Lodge, National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, a life member of National Rifle Association and American Motorcyclist Association. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include two sons, Herbert L. “Herb” Phillips III of Great Bend and William C. Phillips of Derby; one sister, Vivian Redburn of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Great Bend with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. There will be no visitation. Helen Leona Kimpler 1909-2003
Helen Leona Kimpler, 94, of Great Bend, died April 5 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 6, 1909, at Claflin, the daughter of August and Mary Knorr Ehly. She married
Omar B. Kimpler June 20, 1932, at Claflin. He died Aug. 9, 1990. A resident of Great Bend for 19 years, coming from Claflin, she was was co-owner of Kimpler Cleaners and later worked for Suburban Cleaners, Sweetbriar, Gunn’s Clothing and Licheskeys. Mrs. Kimpler was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, Altar Society, AARP, RSVP and Dio. Survivors include one daughter, Carmelita Kwaiser of Saginaw, Mich.; one stepson, Omar Kimpler Jr. of Hutchinson; one stepdaughter, Carolyn Ward of Evergreen, Colo.; one brother, Walter Ehly of Claflin; two sisters, Beatrice Jarchou of Wichita and Joleen Walden of Apple Valley, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. Altar Society rosary will be at 4 today and vigil will be at 7 tonight, with Daughters of Isabella rosary following, all at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend.
