Lois Faye Dipman 1932-2003
Lois Faye Dipman, 70 of Great Bend, died Jan. 18 at Central Kansas Medical Center of Great Bend. She was born Nov. 1, 1932 in Wichita, the daughter of Benjamin F. and Theckia U. Lansdowne Greider. She was a Stafford High School graduate. She married Donald E. Dipman on June 11, 1953 in Portsmouth, Va. A resident of Great Bend, she was a homemaker and mother. Mrs. Dipman was a member of the First Assembly of God church of Great Bend. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Charles E. Dipman of Riverside, Calif. and Donald W. Dipman of Great Bend; two daughters, Linda Dipman of Overland Park and Sharon Price of Larned; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one brother, Monty Greider. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Dwight Dozier officiating. Burial will be in the Hillcrest cemetery of Great Bend. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church, with family receiving friends from 10-11 a.m. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of Charter Funerals of Great Bend. Walter S. Hobbs 1932-2003
Walter S. Hobbs, 70 of Great Bend, died Jan. 15 at his residence. He was born Aug. 19, 1932, at Pueblo, Colo., the son of Robert and Betty Ross Hobbs. He married Sue Feaster Jan. 21, 1954, at Claflin. A resident of Great Bend for 45 years, coming from Pratt, he was former owner of Jayhawk Transportation. Hobbs was an Elder of First Presbyterian Church, former president of Great Bend Chamber of Commerce and former Great Bend city councilman, all of Great Bend. He was a former president of Kansas Motor Carriers Association, United Fund and a member of Isis Shrine of Salina. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Monty Hobbs of Lawrence; one daughter, Deb Rainbolt of Great Bend; one brother, Earl Hobbs of Olathe; one sister, Marion Doty of Pueblo, Colo.; five grandchildren Travis Postlethwaite, Traci Rainbolt, Katelyn Hobbs, Ryan Hobbs, and Haley Hobbs. He was preceded in death by one son, Christopher Hobbs. Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Hal Staats officiating. There is no visitation. There will be a private family inurnment at a later date at Claflin Cemetery. The body was cremated. Memorials are suggested to the Multiple Sclerosis Society in care of Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Jan. 17, 2003

William D. ‘Bill’ Taylor 1944-2003
William D. “Bill” Taylor, 58, of Great Bend, died Jan. 15 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born April 8, 1944, at Trenton, Mo., the son of Roy and Shirley Schooler Taylor. He was a graduate of A.C.L. High School in Allerton, Iowa, Indian Hills Junior College and Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo. He married Karla France Bright Aug. 22, 1965, at Lineville, Iowa. A resident of Great Bend for the past 17 months and coming from Jewell, Iowa, he was a teacher and coach for USD 428. He was a teacher and coached a variety of athletic teams including varsity golf and football for Anita High School in Anita, Iowa; Paul H. Pewitt High School in Omaha, Texas; South Hamilton Community School in Jewell; and Great Bend High School. Taylor was the 1982 Iowa Shrine All-Star Football coach for the North Squad and in May of 2001 received the Golden Apple Teaching Award. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in South Korea from 1969-1970. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Clint Slayton Taylor of Austin, Texas; one daughter, Tegwin Kay Taylor of Ames, Iowa; and four brothers, Ben Taylor of Des Moines, Iowa, Steve Taylor of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Tim Taylor of Allerton, and Mark Taylor of Charlotte, N.C. He was preceded in death by one infant brother, John Taylor. Funeral will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Great Bend High School Gymnasium with the Rev. Shawn Winters officiating. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Coach Bill Taylor Memorial Scholarship in care of the funeral home. Jan. 17, 2003

John Joseph ‘Jack’ Feist 1934-2003
John Joseph “Jack” Feist, 68, died Jan. 15 at Hutchinson Hospital. He was born March 7, 1934, at Ellinwood, the son of Conrad and Viola Liebl Feist. He married Mary M. Axman Aug. 29, 1959, at Olmitz. A resident of Great Bend for 40 years, coming from Dodge City, he was a self-employed stone carver. Feist proudly served in the Marine Corp from 1953 to 1956. Jack Feist came into his personal relationship with Jesus in 1973. The peace, love and joy of Christ shone through his life to all who knew him. Survivors include his wife of the home; four sons, Robert Feist of Oklahoma City, Okla., Gerald Feist of Elk City, Okla., Douglas Feist of Joplin, Mo., and Paul Feist of Topeka; three daughters, Lahna Andrus and Connie Feist, both of Wichita and Leanna Parish of Topeka; one brother, William Feist of Great Bend; two sisters, Jolene Hammeke of Great Bend and Norma Lee Berscheidt of Yakima, Wash.; and ten grandchildren. Service of prayer and sharing will be at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Loren Dyke officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, six miles north of Ellinwood. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hungry Heart Soup Kitchen and Lasting Life Ministries, both in care of the funeral home. Jan. 17, 2003

Aloysius ‘Blackie’ Walters 1922-2003
Aloysius “Blackie’ Walters, 80, died Jan. 15 at Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita. He was born Nov. 24, 1922, at Catherine, the son of Alois F. and Dora Meis Walters. He married Mary Glassman Nov. 5, 1947, at Hays. A resident of Great Bend for 55 years, coming from Hays, he worked for Western Auto, Coast to Coast and retired from Vicker Corporation, all of Great Bend. Walters was a member of Knights of Columbus, St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111 and American Legion Post 180, all of Great Bend. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as a sergeant in World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Ronald J. Walters of Hudson and Kenneth F. Walters of Shawnee; one daughter, Barbara Ann Holt of Olathe; two brothers, Archie Walters of Hays and Alfred Walters of Aurora, Colo.; five sisters, Hilaria McGuire, Cecilia Basgall and Lorraine Wasinger, all of Hays, Eleanora Marzano of Tacoma, Wash., and Leona Schwartzenberger of Hoxie; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Marcellus Walters, Richard Walters, Seraphin Walters, Albert Walters and Alvin Walters. Vigil service followed by Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church with the Revs. Rene Guesnier and Angel Dy officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery with military rites conducted by Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of the funeral home. Jan. 17, 2003

Marie L. Hughes 1929-2003
ST. JOHN — Marie L. Hughes, 73, died Jan. 15 at her residence in St. John. She was born March 18, 1929, at Williamsport, Pa. She married Arthur J. Hughes March 25, 1952, at Berwick, Pa. He died June 10, 1997. She was an inspector for Garment Factory in Williamsport. Mrs. Hughes was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church and Moose Lodge, both of Williamsport. Survivors include two sons, Daniel L. Evans of Milton, Pa., and Arthur J. Hughes Jr. of Fayetteville, N.C.; two daughters, Zoe Staub and Cindy M. Parr, both of St. John; one brother, Bernard Kibler of Williamsport; 13 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Kibler, Frederick Kibler and Leo Kibler. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Minnis Chapel in St. John with the Rev. Rene Guesnier officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Friends may call from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Southwind Hospice of Pratt in care of the funeral home. Edward L. “Ed” Stremel 1913-2003
HAYS — Edward L. “Ed” Stremel, 89, died Jan. 11 at the Hays Medical Center. He was born Oct. 13, 1913 near Loretto, the son of John R. and Susanna Haberkorn Stremel. He attended school in Loretto. He married Isabel A. Schuckman on March 2, 1941 in Liebenthal. A resident of rural Hays, he was a farmer. Stremel was a member of St. Anthony Church and the Knights of Columbus, both of Schoenchen. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Edward Stremel Jr of Shawnee and Michael Stremel of Hays; two daughters, Esther Schaffer of Wichita and Irene Foster of Woodbury, Minn.; one brother, Richard Stremel of Great Bend; 13 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and one step great grandchild. He was preceded in death by one son, John Stremel; five brothers; and five sisters. Funeral service was held Tuesday at the church. Burial was in St. Anthony cemetery of Schoenchen. Memorials are suggested to the church or cemetery fund, both in care of Brock’s North Hill Chapel of Hays. Jan. 16, 2003

Evelyn L. Krug 1915-2003
LA CROSSE — Evelyn L. Krug, 87, died Jan.15 at Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Center in La Crosse. She was born July 9, 1915, at Ionia the daughter of James Monroe Workman and Nellie Estelle Hauser Workman. She graduated from Ionia High School in 1933. She married Paul Bowman June 1, 1937, at La Crosse. He died Sept. 26, 1977. She married Elmer Krug June 26, 1982. He died Sept. 17, 1984. A longtime resident of Rush County, she was a bank teller at Nekoma State Bank until her retirement in 1994. Mrs. Krug was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, East Brookdale Unit, Town and Country Ladies Club and Pro Art Music Club. Survivors include two daughters, Dolores Lambotte of Topeka and Carolyn Daubert of Otis; eight grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Reggie Workman, Homer Workman, Curtis Workman, Gerald Workman and Harold Workman; and four sisters, Gertrude Shellenberger, Nina Gibson, Grace Conger and Lena Blacker. A vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Charles Mazouch officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse City Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Rush County Nursing Home, Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care, the church or Rush County Amusement Company, all in care of the funeral home. Jan. 16, 2003

Brig. Gen. Leslie J. Campbell Jr. 1922-2003
SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Brig. Gen. Leslie J. Campbell Jr USAF (Ret.), 80, died Jan. 12 in San Antonio. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Gunn Campbell; his brother, Harold L. Campbell and wife Dorothy of Great Bend. Gen. Campbell enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and became an Air Academy Cadet in 1943. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1944. During the course of his career he was an instructor pilot for numerous aircraft including the B-17, B-26, B-47 and T-33. He was a project test pilot for the B-47. His many assignment duties include being Wing Safety Officer; Wing Accident Investigation Officer; Executive Officer and Executive Assistant to the Director of Legislative Liaison, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. He became Vice Wing Commander, Executive Officer to the Deputy Chief of Staff (U.S. Air Force) after his rreturn from the Republic of Vietnam where he was Commander of the 315th Tactical Airlift Wing at Phan Rang Air Base. His final assignment was in the Canal Zone where as Director, J-5 (Plans and Program Directorate), U.S. Southern Command, he was a liaison between heads of state and the military. He also participated in negotiations for the Panama Canal Treaty. The Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry are among his many military awards and decorations, He was a command pilot with more than 7, 000 hours in conventional, single and multi-jet aircraft. BG and Mrs. Campbell retired to San Antonio in 1982. He accepted a position at UTSA where he taught political science and international studies for many years. He is particularly remembered for his support of UTSA interns in a multitude of positions throughout San Antonio. Those whose lives he touched will always remember his professional contributions as a military leader and academic counselor. They will also remember his personal attributes of unfailing graciousness and integrity. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Porter Loring Funeral Home, 1101 McCollough. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church. Internment will be in Arlington National Cemetery. Ruth Haymond 1914-2003
BURDETT — Ruth Haymond, 88, died Jan. 14 at Hodgeman County Health Center in Jetmore. She was born May 7, 1914 at Swink, Colo., the daughter of Thomas and Addie Walker Taylor. She married Earl Haymond in December 1939 in Great Bend. He died in December 1984. A resident of Burdett, she was a homemaker and farmer. Mrs. Haymond was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Burdett Seniors, Taught Youth Group, Friendship Club and Bible Study Menninger Class, all of Burdett. Survivors include one daughter, Ruth Klein of Dodge City; two grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred Taylor and Bill Taylor, and two sisters, Nellie Northern and Lula Wallace. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Tony Horsley officiating. Burial will be in the Brown’s Grove cemetery of Burdett. Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Beckwith Funeral Home of Jetmore. Memorials are suggested to the church or Burdett Emergency Medical Service, both in care of the funeral home. Jan. 15, 2003

Edna Blanche Smith 1907-2003
LEWIS — Edna Blanche Smith, 95, died Jan. 13, 2003, at Hutchinson Hospital. She was born Nov. 7, 1907, at Fellsburg, the daughter of Willard V. and Clara Emily McCarty Smith. She married Floyd Ives Smith Aug. 5, 1928, at Attica. He died Oct. 23, 1974. A resident of Mennonite Fellowship Manor since 1997, coming from Edwards County, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Christian faith, a charter member of Franklin EHU, 50 year member of Eastern Star and 50 year member of Royal Neighbors. Survivors include one son, Estel “Bo” Smith of Wichita; one daughter, Clara Jean Liggett of Owasso, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Ann Jones; three brothers; and one sister. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned with the Rev. Bill Stapleton officiating. Burial will be at Fellsburg Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday, all at the funeral home. Susan Irene Gilbert 1953-2003
HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — Susan Irene Gilbert, 49, died Jan. 13, at Iliff Care Center in Denver, Colo. She was born Aug. 14, 1953, at La Crosse, the daughter of Lloyd and Irene Kittle Carter. She was a 1971 graduate of Otis High School and a 1975 graduate of the School of Nursing in Dodge City. She married Terry L. Gilbert May 26, 1979 at Hugoton. A resident of Highlands Ranch, coming from Guymon, Okla., Flagstaff, Ariz., and Houston, Texas, she was a nurse. Mrs. Gilbert was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church of Highlands Ranch. Survivors include her husband of the home; and one son, Terry Gilbert of the home. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Olmitz with the Revs. Ultan Murphy and Larry Solon officiating. Burial will be at St. Ann cemetery in Olmitz. Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian burial was held today at Archdiocese of Denver Mortuary with the Rev. Larry Solon officiating. Jan. 15, 2003
