John A. Bernhardt Jr. 1926-2002
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — John A. Bernhardt Jr., 76, died Nov. 30 at his residence in Charlotte. He was born Nov. 4, 1926, at New York, N.Y., the son of John A. and Madeleine Celig Bernhardt. He married
Clea Hubbell in 1951, at Jetmore. A resident of Charlotte, he was a civil engineer and vice-president of construction management for Shaw Construction. Bernhardt was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, both of Charlotte. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, John Bernhardt III of Baltimore, Md., and Michael Bernhardt of Arvada, Colo.; two daughters, Madeleine Nuci of Alta Loma, Calif., and Ann Gasswint of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Kenneth Bernhardt of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Dorothy Johnson of Keen, N.H., and Jeanne Bernhardt of Forrest Hill, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Fairmount cemetery of Jetmore with the Rev. Henry Hildebrandt officiating. Beckwith Funeral Home of Jetmore is in charge of arrangements. Dec. 5, 2002
Marie M. Zelenka 1921-2002
Marie M. Zelenka, 81, of Great Bend, died Dec. 3 at Central Kansas Medical Center of Great Bend. She was born Aug. 16, 1921, at Beaver, the daughter of John and Katharine Meyeres Kultgen. She married
John Zelenka on Jan. 24, 1946, at Great Bend. He died Sept. 15, 1998. A resident of Great Bend for 66 years, coming from Beaver, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Zelenka was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Altar Society, member and past president of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 3111, American Legion Auxiliary, former secretary and treasurer of Cheyenne Bottoms Sportsman Club and Social Circle Card Club, all of Great Bend, and AARP. Survivors include one son, Mark Zelenka of Salina; three daughters, Sue Tolan Trout of Minneapolis, Janet Zeller of Wichita and Nancy Harman of Garden City; two grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by one brother, John Kultgen. Altar Society rosary will be at 3 today at Bryant Funeral Home. Vigil service will be at 7 tonight, followed by VFW Auxiliary 3111 Ritual, both at the funeral home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Angel Dy officiating. Burial will be at Palacky cemetery of Ellsworth County. Friends may call until 9 tonight at the funeral home. LeRoy Eugene Krom 1928-2002
LeRoy Eugene Krom, 74, of Great Bend, died Dec. 1 at Miners’ Colfax Medical Center of Raton, N.M. He was born Jan. 23, 1928, at Galatia, the son of Conrad H. and Nima Shaefer Krom. He married
Verna C. Murphy Aug. 29, 1949. A lifetime resident of the Great Bend area, he was a retired oil field worker. Krom was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church of Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Kent Krom and wife Margaret of St. John and Shaun Krom and wife Denise of Great Bend; five daughters, Donna Brietkruetz of Topeka, Bonnie Thomas and husband Kenneth and Kimberly Schwartz and husband Keith, all of Colorado Springs, Colo., Pam Cropp and husband Steve of Farmington, , N.M., and Kelly Hapes and husband Jim of Great Bend; one brother, Melvin Krom of Great Bend; and one sister, Karen Karst of Oklahoma City, Okla.; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church of Seward. Memorial Mass will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be at the church cemetery of Seward. Marjorie Ellen McVey 1919-2002
LARNED — Marjorie Ellen McVey, 83, died Dec. 2 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital of Larned. She was born Jan. 26, 1919, at Larned, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Hill Koons. She was a 1975 graduate of Barton County Community College, with a RN degree. She married
Rex McVey on Aug. 20, 1938, at Larned. He died May 9, 1978. A lifetime resident of Larned, she was a retired registered nurse, previous administrator of several nursing homes, assistant county nurse in Barton County and worked at Larned State Hospital. Mrs. McVey was a member of Agape Christian Fellowship Church of Larned and Kansas Health Care Association. Survivors include one son, Dale McVey of Larned; three daughters, Cheryl Lagle of Bazine, Betty Jo “Jody” West of Great Bend and Mary Jane Boese of Rozel; one stepson, Verlin McVey of Barstow, Calif.; one sister, Marie McVey of Ellis; 19 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Robert McVey; and one brother, Joseph M. Koons. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel of Larned with the Rev. Rudy Cerullo officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. Thursday, all at the mortuary. Loretta Joan Koehn 1954-2002
LARNED — Loretta Joan Koehn, 48, died Dec. 1 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center of Wichita. She was born Oct. 29, 1954, at Great Bend, the daughter of Vernon E. and Marie H. Kecker Koehn. A lifetime resident of Larned, she was a retired dietary worker at Larned State Hospital. Koehn was a member of Baptist Church of Kinsley, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and American Legion auxiliary, both of Larned. Survivors include her parents; one daughter, Lynette J. Lewis of Deighton; and two brothers, Daniel John Koehn of Hutchinson and Steven H. Koehn of Larned. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel of Larned with the Rev. Johnny Augmon officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight at the mortuary. Dorothy F. Koochel 1915-2002
Dorothy F. Koochel, 87, of Great Bend, died Dec. 1 at Central Kansas Medical Center of Great Bend. She was born Nov. 15, 1915, at Great Bend, the daughter of John J. and Anna Folke Budde Wilhelm. She married
Olin E. Koochel on Nov. 21, 1938, at Timken. He died Oct. 23, 1995. A lifetime resident of Barton and Rush counties, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Koochel was a member of First United Methodist Church of Great Bend. Survivors include two sons, Larry J. Koochel of Liberal and John T. Koochel of Great Bend; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Virgil Wilhelm; and two sisters, Selma Dyer and Gladys Brown. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-9 tonight and 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday, all at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend. Frederic L. ‘Larry’ Cochrane 1947-2002
ABERDEEN, Wash. — Frederic L. “Larry” Cochrane, 54, died Nov. 26 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital. He was born Nov. 29, 1947 in Great Bend, the son of Frederic Lawrence and Evelyn Jane Rowley Cochrane. He married
Rose Marie Lacher Feb 24, 1984, in Tacoma, Wash. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17, where he served for eight years with three tours of Viet Nam. He was a resident of Hoquiam, Wash., coming from Belfair, Wash. and Kansas. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Frederic Lawrence Cochrane III of Port Angles, Wash.; two daughters, Sonja Marie King of Purdy, Miss., and Sally Rané Potts of Ellesburg, Wash.; mother, Evelyn Jane Cochrane of Hoisington; four brothers, George Ellery Cochrane of Topeka, Marion Dale Cochrane of Edgerton, James Ray Cochrane of Great Bend, and Daniel Dean Cochrane of Hutchinson; four sisters, Earlene Jane Woods of Topeka, Florine Annette Doty of El Dorado, Beverly Fae Harriman of Hutchinson, and Mary Viola Bennett of Yakima, Wash.; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Durward Russell Thomas. A committal service will be held on Feb. 24, 2003 at the Tahoma National cemetery in Kent, Wash. Cremation arrangements were handled by Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam. Memorials are suggested to Disabled American Veterans. Dec. 3, 2002
LeMoyne R. Frederick 1921-2002
HOBBS, N.M. — LeMoyne R. Frederick, 81, died Nov. 29 at Hobbs. He was born May 2, 1921 in Ellsworth. He married
Joyce Schaffer. He was a resident of Hobbs since 1967, coming from Los Alamos, N.M. where he was a journalist having worked as a bureau chief for the Santa Fe New Mexican. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Steven Frederick of Arlington, Texas; three daughters, Judy Schlotterback of Farmington, N. M., Sharon Turner of Odessa, Texas, and Carol Noble of Alva, Okla.; and two sisters, Leatrice Foley of North Carolina, and Joann Janne of Mesa, Ariz. He was preceded in death by two brothers Persheing Frederick and Clarice Frederick. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wilson City cemetery with military honors by the Wilson American Legion Post with the Rev. Joseph E. Branda 1922-2002
WILSON — Joseph E. Branda, 80, died Dec. 1 at Salina. He was born Jan. 10, 1922, at Luray, the son of Joseph F. and Josie Hynes Branda. He married
Clarice Knoll Oct. 29, 1951, at Russell. A lifetime Russell County resident before moving to Wilson, he was an air conditioner, heating and appliance serviceman for Deines and Humburg’s. Branda was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. He was in the U.S. Air Force, having served in World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Joseph N. Branda of Liberal; four daughters, Clarice M. Scheck of McAlestar, Okla., Margaret Longolia of Chico, Calif., Julia Anne Drake of Middletown, Ohio, and Mary Zorn of Wilson; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Branda and Richard Branda; and one sister, Matilda Novak. Vigil will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Foster Mortuary in Wilson. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Jerome Morgan officiating. HANSTON — Alice Katie Trauer Powell, 96, died Nov. 30 at Hodgeman County Long Term Care Center of Jetmore. She was born May 4, 1906, in Pawnee County, the daughter of Walter J. and Zella M. Spoonemore Burns. She married
William L. Trauer on Jan. 10, 1925, at Jetmore. He died Oct. 31, 1925. She then married
Chester A. Powell on Nov. 8, 1970, at Hanston. He died July 9, 1993. A lifetime resident of the Hanston area, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Powell was a member of First Baptist Church, Cowbells, Hodgeman County Ladies Aid, Farm Bureau, Senior Center and Weekly Bible study, all of Hanston. Survivors include one son, Billy Trauer of Hanston; one daughter, Virginia Miller of Hanston; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Donald Trauer; three brothers, Edward Burns, Verl Burns and Bill Burns; and two sisters, Myrtle Delaney and Lorene Brown. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Carl Vincent officiating. Friends may call until 8 tonight at Beckwith Funeral Home of Jetmore. Vida May Sizemore 1913 - 2002
ST. JOHN — Vida May Sizemore, 89, died Nov. 29 at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. She was born May 15, 1913 in St. John, the daughter of Edmund and Nancy May Ratts. She married
Homer Joe Sizemore on May 20, 1951 in St. John. He died Dec. 26, 1989. A resident of St. John, she was a school teacher for 43 years, teaching first grade in St. John for 32 years. Mrs. Sizemore was a member of Church of Christ, Hesperian Club, Harmony Club, and a board member of several civic groups. Survivors include one brother, Loyd Ratts of St. John and one sister, Dr. Thelma Ratts Franklin Merrick of Duncanville, Texas. Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. today at Minnis Chapel in St. John, with the Rev. Carl Feril officiating. A private family burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John.
