ATTICA — Kenneth R. Trantham, 80, died Dec. 23 near Sharon. He was born Nov. 28, 1922, at Amorita, Okla., the son of Benjamin Franklin and Stella Jane Angle Trantham. He married
Agnes Byers July 27, 1943, at Sharon. She died Dec. 23, 2002. He was a retired farmer and an employee of the city of Attica. He was an Attica Sexton. Survivors include two sons, Darrel Trantham of Attica and Thomas Trantham of Great Bend; one daughter, Karen Brown of Alva, Okla.; one brother, Tom Trantham of Sharon; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathy Lacy; two brothers, Harold “Bud” Trantham and Claude Trantham; and five sisters, Daisy Bariani, Mae Simon, Maude “Peggy” McLean, Lenora Post and Maurine Harnell. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Attica cemetery with the Rev. Paul Banister officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Attica Ministerial Alliance. Elliott Mortuary in Anthony is in charge of arrangements.

Sharon Sue Shupe 1946-2002
LONGMONT, Colo. — Sharon Sue Shupe of Longmont, formerly of Great Bend, died Friday, Dec. 20, at Applewood Living Center from complications associated with multiple sclerosis. She was 56 years old. Sherry was born June 6, 1946, to Harold and Geraldine Schwartz. She was raised in the Great Bend area and graduated from Great Bend High School in 1964. On Oct. 6, 1966, she married
Floyd A. Shupe. The couple lived for a short time in Kansas before moving to Northern Colorado. They also lived in Colorado Springs and then settled in the Longmont area. Ms. Shupe was a homemaker. She was also an active outdoors woman and loved hunting, fishing, camping and horseback riding. She loved animals and had much success in raising and training them. She was a very successful gardener and enjoyed stocking her shelves with her canned goods. She had a great love for Jesus Christ and enjoyed studying about him with friends up until her decline in health. She was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved grandparents, Karl and Gan Kienzle. She is survived by her former husband of Longmont; her son, Jeff Shupe and his wife Elaina of Longmont; her daughter, Debbie Shupe of Denver; three grandchildren, Craig Shupe, Mikaysha Shupe and Cameron Shupe, all of Longmont; her sisters, Kathy Pafford of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Candace Pawlicki of Tennessee; her brother, Randy Schwartz and his wife Denise of Great Bend; one nephew, Walker Schwartz and one niece, Sarah Schwartz, both of Great Bend; and her friends and caretakers, Wayne and Carolyn Roth of Boulder, Colo. Memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at Longview Community Clubhouse with David Lister officiating. Arrangements were made by Erlinger Cremation in Longmont. Blanche Mildred O’Connor 1917-2002
ST. JOHN — Blanche Mildred O’Connor, 85, died Dec. 25 at Leisure Homestead in St. John. She was born June 13, 1917, at Seward, the daughter of James R. and Nellie Keenan. She graduated from Radium High School and attended Fort Hays State University. She married
Patrick Smith O’Connor March 29, 1937, at Seward. A lifetime resident of Stafford County, she was a school teacher for the Diamond and Kenilworth communities. She was a member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, Altar Society and Mothers Club, all of St. John, and was a past member of Xavier Catholic Church in Seward. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Kevin Keenan O’Connor of Wichita; three daughters, Patricia Jean O’Connor of San Francisco, Calif., Marcia L. Smith of San Antonio, Texas, and Celia Ann Burke of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one sister, Marjorie Vratil of Larned; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Perry James O’Connor; and one daughter, Rita Jane McCandless. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in St. John with the Rev. Rene Guesnier officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Kenneth R. Trantham July 27, 1943, in Sharon. He died Dec. 23, 2002. She was a retired housekeeper for the Attica Long Term Care Facility. Survivors include two sons, Darrel Trantham of Attica and Thomas Trantham of Great Bend; one daughter, Karen Brown of Alva, Okla.; two brothers, Duane Byers of Kingman and Wendell Byers of Medicine Lodge; one sister, Margaret Campbell of Kingman; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathy Lacy; four brothers, Robert Byers, Gilford Byers, Dale Byers and Kenneth Byers; and two sisters, Iona Slayden and Elvera McCullough. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Attica Cemetery, with the Rev. Paul Banister officiating. Earl Miller 1913-2002
Earl Miller, 89 of Great Bend, died Dec. 22 at Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born April 14, 1913, at Amber, Okla., the son of Robert and Mittie Esther Young Miller. He married
Eleanor K. Miller. She preceded him in death. He then married
Eleanor L. Hamilton on Jan. 15, 1984, at Grand Junction, Colo. A resident of Great Bend for 58 years, coming from Oklahoma, he was an oil field producer until his retirement in 1981. Miller was a member of First United Methodist Church and Elks Lodge, both of Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Roberta Lindbeck of Prairie Village and Doris Fritz of Riley; two stepsons, Steve Thomas and Dave Thomas, both of Great Bend; one stepdaughter, Carolyn Huslig of Grand Junction; three brothers, William F. Miller, Horace Miller and Ernest Miller, all of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two sisters, Orene Goodrich of LaHabra, Calif., and Montie Faye Turner of Oklahoma City; many grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Howard Miller; one sister, Ruth Miller; and one stepsister, Esteen Marple. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend, with the Rev. Gary Brooks officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. ELLINWOOD — Caleb Andrew Clawson, infant, died Dec. 22 at Wichita. He was born Dec. 22 at Wichita, the son of Kraig and Sloan Pebley Clawson. Survivors include his parents of the home; two brothers, Kody Clawson and Kane Clawson, both of the home; one sister, Anna Clawson of the home; grandparents, Larry and Carol Clawson and Curtis and Jeri Brozek, all of Ellinwood, and Curtis and Deanne Pebley of Larned; and great-grandmother, Jean Lehr of Great Bend. James Robert ‘Bob’ Sears 1930-2002
FRITCH, Texas — James Robert “Bob” Sears, 72, died Dec. 20 at Crown of Texas Hospice of Amarillo, Texas. A resident of Fritch for 37 years, coming from Topeka, he was an administrator for the U.S. Agricultural Research Center of Bushland, Texas. Sears was a member of First Southern Baptist Church of Fritch. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include one son, Jim Sears of Irving, Texas; two daughters, Janet Perry of Sunray, Texas, and Jeri Sears of Mineola, Texas; two brothers, Joseph Don Sears of Artesia, Calif., and Roy Duane Sears of Winston-Salem, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Norma J. ‘Jean’ Taylor 1935-2002
HUTCHINSON — Norma J. “Jean” Taylor, 67, died Dec. 22 at Hospice House in Hutchinson. She was born June 1, 1935, at Hutchinson, the daughter of John William and Odelia Amelia Uphoff Jones. She was a 1953 graduate of Garden City High School. She attended Oklahoma Women’s College in Chickasha, Okla., and Wichita State University. She married
Bernard L. Taylor Nov. 26, 1955, at Garden City. A resident of Reno County, coming from Great Bend, she was a homemaker. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene of Great Bend; Hutchinson Iris Club; board of directors and secretary for Barton County Historical Society; Barton County Geneological Society; and a longtime pianist for the church. Survivors include three sons, Steve Taylor of Ottawa, Greg Taylor and Doug Taylor, both of San Jose, Calif.; two daughters, Valerie Tittel of Hutchinson and Michelle Clone of Great Bend; one brother, Marlin Jones of Garden City; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandson, Kerry Clone; and one granddaughter, Tessa Tittel. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Church of the Nazarene in Hutchinson with the Dr. Charles G. McCallum officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park cemetery in Hutchinson. Charlotte A. Brack 1916-2002
HOISINGTON — Charlotte A. Brack, 86, died Dec. 23 at Clara Barton Hospital of Hoisington. She was born May 25, 1916, at Scott City, the daughter of Ralph and Mary Miller Muzzall. She married
Arthur W. Curtis in September 1939. He died in October 1949. She then married
Clarence V. Brack on April 11, 1954, at Farmington, N.M. A resident of Hoisington, she was a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell and Kansas Telephone in Hoisington, was head cashier for 15 years at Central Kansas Medical Center of Great Bend and had a cosmetology license. Mrs. Brack was a member of United Methodist Church of Otis and Daughters of the American Revolution. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, William A. Curtis of Valley Center; one daughter, Melissa Nech of Hoisington; one sister, Genevieve Conn of Platte City, Mo.; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Victor Muzzall and Kenneth Muzzall; and two sisters, Marguerite Brueggeman and Bernice Muzzall. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Kathy Bannister officiating. Burial will be at Methodist cemetery of Otis. HOISINGTON — James W. “Pete” Carroll, 85, died Dec. 22 at Cheyenne Meadows Living Center of Hoisington. He was born Nov. 28, 1917, at Hoisington, the son of James B. and Clarissa Larkin Carroll. He married
Cecilia T. Preisner on June 22, 1941, at Hoisington. A lifetime resident of Hoisington, he was a farmer and retired employee for the city of Hoisington. Carroll was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1521 and Heritage Club, all of Hoisington. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Dennis Carroll of Kiowa and Walter Carroll of Hoisington; two daughters, Joyce Hibbs of Alva, Okla., and Sharon Krumm of Grinnell, Iowa; three sisters, Geneva Carroll and Betty Smith, both of Hoisington, and Edith King of Houma, La.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two infant sons, Thomas Eugene Carroll and John A. Carroll; one brother, William Carroll; two sisters, Ruby Farnsworth and Irene Hickey; and one grandson, Jacky Summers. Donald ‘Kitz’ Whitehair 1923-2002
ABILENE — Donald “Kitz” Whitehair, 79, died Dec. 19 at Memorial Hospital in Abilene. H e was born April 8, 1923, at Abilene, the son of Paul X. and Mary Rauch Whitehair. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1941. He was a farmer and electrician, having worked for Kansas Power and Light. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Abilene Elks Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, all of Abilene. He was a veteran with the U.S. Army Paratroopers, having served in World War II. Survivors include two sons, Patrick Whitehair of San Antonio, Texas, and Richard Whitehair of Huntington Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Debra Hardman of Osborne and Sherry Griffin of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; two brothers, Paul L. Whitehair and Richard J. Whitehair, both of Abilene; two sisters, Mary Virginia Lorson of Hope and Patricia Commerford of Great Bend; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Michael D. Whitehair; and one brother, Dr. Norman V. Whitehair. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene. ALBERT — Edith M. Schroeder, 94, died Dec. 20 at the Great Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center of Great Bend. She was born April 14, 1908 in Abbyville, the daughter of Claude and Birtie Duvall Bridgeman. She married
Leslie Frederick Schroeder on Dec. 24, 1934 in Abbyville. He died Feb. 13, 1995. A resident of the Albert area since 1934, coming from Abbyville, she was a school teacher at Otis High School. Mrs. Schroeder was a member of the Albert United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Sunday School superintendent and Happy Agers Club of Otis. Survivors include one sister, Marie Elliott of Hutchinson. She was preceded in death by one brother, Leo Bridgeman. JETMORE — Charles M. Greenstreet, 82, died Dec. 21 at Hodgeman County Long Term Care of Jetmore. He was born June 19, 1920 in Hodgeman County, the son of Charles T. and Margert Lobil Greenstreet. He married
Mabel Jordan on Sept. 1, 1957 at Hanston. She died March 11, 2002. A longtime Hodgeman County resident, he was a farmer. Greenstreet was a member of the Elks of Dodge City. Survivors include one step daughter, Mildred Rupp of Hays; eight step grandchildren; 10 step great grandchildren; and two step great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three step sons, Jack, Lawrence and James; one brother, Herb Greenstreet; and two sisters, Margert and Amanda.
