WILSON - Joseph D. Macek, 70, died Nov. 3. He was born June 28, 1932, in Ellsworth County. He married
Alice. A resident of Wilson, he was a retired machinist for Raytheon Aircraft of Salina and a former John Deere dealer/parts man of Wilson. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Jerry D. Macek of Wilson; one daughter, Ramona M. Macek of Topeka; one sister, Bernadine Bachman of Ellsworth; and four grandchildren. Funeral service was today at St. Wenceslaus Church of Wilson. Burial was at the church cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church, Wilson Senior Center or Wilson American Legion Post 262, all in care of Foster Mortuary of Wilson. Nov. 6, 2002
George A. Skelton 1920-2002
LARNED - George A. Skelton, 82, died Nov. 5 at St. Joseph Long Term Care Center of Larned. He was born Feb. 12, 1920, in Pawnee County, the son of Nelson N. and Hazel Combs Skelton. He married
Juanita May Deighton on Nov. 9, 1941, at Dodge City. She died March 5, 1981. A lifetime resident of Pawnee County, he was a retired alfalfa manager for Western Alfalfa. Skelton was a member of First Christian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, all of Larned, and a member of Eagles Lodge of Garden City. He was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include one son, Gary A. Skelton of Great Bend; two daughters, Sandra M. Bartlett Moore and Coleen K. Houser, both of Larned; two brothers, Harlen "Ske" Skelton and Jack Skelton, both of Larned; one sister, Hazel Callahan of Larned; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Neal Skelton; two sisters, Ruth Deckert and Mary Brothers; and one grandson, Shawn Bartlett. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel of Larned with the Rev. Dan Lundgren officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery, with military honors. Darryl Gene Zorn 1962-2002
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Darryl Gene Zorn, 40, died Oct. 28 at his residence in Colorado Springs. He was born Sept. 11, 1962, the son of Ed and Lea Meyeres Zorn. A resident of Colorado Springs since 1965, he was employed by Cobb Mechanical Contractors for 14 years. Survivors include his parents; one brother, Eddie Zorn; four sisters, Debbi Green, Niki Daugherty, Jolene Middlestadt and Valinda Goodwin; and grandfather, Nick P. Meyeres. Shelton E. Darnall 1910-2002
LARNED - Shelton E. Darnall, 92, died Nov. 3 at the Larned Healthcare and Living Center of Larned. He was born Feb. 19, 1910, at Dawson Springs, Ky., the son of James Edward and Eva Coats Darnall. He married
Thelma Goodaker on Aug. 6, 1938, at Princeton, Ky. She died Jan. 9, 2001. A longtime resident of Pawnee County, he was a retired farmer and stockman. Darnall was a member of Rozel Baptist Church and was a charter and lifetime member of Larned Saddle Club. Survivors include one daughter, Brenda VanMeter of Larned; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Edward Ford Darnall. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel of Larned with the Rev. John Hester officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday, all at the mortuary. The family will receive friends from 6-8 tonight at the mortuary. Virginia 'Maher' Winslow 1924-2002
MCPHERSON - Virginia "Maher" Winslow, 78, died Nov. 4 at Infinia at McPherson. She was born March 19, 1924 at Lincoln, the daughter of Leon Albert and Edna Florence Taylor Maher. She was a graduate of McPherson High School in 1942. She married
Carroll D. Winslow Oct. 2, 1960 at McPherson. A resident of McPherson since 1935, coming from Hutchinson, she was a secretary/bookkeeper for Anderson Insurance Company, later known as Anderson-Mettlen Insurance Company. She became a licensed insurance agent when the name was changed to Mettlen Insurance Company. She was a member of United Methodist Church of McPherson and a member of the McPherson and Professional Women Club and the McPherson Opera House, all of McPherson. Survivors include her husband of the home. She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Maher, and two sisters, Dorothy Maher and Joyce Maher. Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at McPherson cemetery followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at the church, both with the Rev. Michael Marion officiating. Harold W. Hofmaster 1916-2002
WICHITA - Harold W. Hofmaster, 85, died Oct. 30. He was born Dec. 4, 1916, at Great Bend. He married
Dorothy. A resident of Wichita, he was a machinist for Beechcraft for 31 years, until his retirement. Hofmaster was a member of Fairview Christian Church of Wichita. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Janet Scuka of Denison, Texas; two sisters, Ailsa Morgan of Larned and Donna Doyle of Houston, Texas; and one granddaughter. Helen L. Stellman 1914-2002
ST. JOHN - Helen L. Stellman, 88, died Nov. 1 at Integrated Health Services of Great Bend. She was born March 16, 1914, at Hudson, the daughter of Sylvester Edwin and Blanche Veatch. She was a 1932 graduate of St. John High School. She married
Louis A. Stellman on Oct. 10, 1942, at Roswell, N.M. He died March 6, 1996. A resident of St. John since 1994, she was a seamstress, specializing in drapes, and a reupholsterer of furniture. Mrs. Stellman attended Peace Church, north of Hudson, was a member and leader of 4-H, square dancer and member of EHU. Survivors include one brother, Wendell P. Veatch of St. John. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold Francis Veatch, Quentin Sylvester Veatch and Reuel Norman Veatch; and one sister, Leatha Veatch. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. at Minnis Chapel of St. John with the Rev. W. Harlan Rittgers officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery of St. John. Cecile Georgia Claypool 1911 - 2002
STAFFORD - Cecile Georgia Claypool, 91, died Nov. 1 at Stafford District Hospital in Stafford. She was born June 11, 1911 at Compton, Ill., the daughter of George Walter and Florence Edith Parker Lamb. She married
Alvin Lee Claypool on Aug. 6, 1930 in St. John. He died May 30, 1970. A resident of Hamilton and Greeley counties, she moved to Stafford in 1935. She was a homemaker and had farming interests in Greely, Gray, and Stafford counties. Mrs. Claypool was a member of the Stafford Church of Christ, Ye Olde Tyme Club, Liberty HDU and El Dorado Campers Association, Stafford Pride Committee, and was a past member of the Stafford Garden Club. She judged local Garden Club shows and the Kansas State Flower Show. She had also served as Foods Leader for Corn Valley 4-H Club. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Lou Holloway of Great Bend; one son, Karol Lee Claypool of Stafford; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Myrtle Miller Lang and Gertrude Hartnett, and a grandson, Ronald Lee Ackley. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church, with Richard Foster officiating. Burial will be at Stafford Cemetery. Friends may call today from 1-8 p.m. at Minnis Chapel in Stafford. Bobby Charles Heitschmidt 1930 - 2002
HOLYROOD - Bobby Charles Heitschmidt, 72, a farmer and stockman, died Oct. 31 at his home in Holyrood.
He was born June 29, 1930, at Ellsworth Hospital.
He was the son of Charles J. Heitschmidt and Nora Soeken Heitschmidt.
He was a 1948 graduate of Holyrood Rural High School, a 1953 graduate of Kansas State University (KSU) with a degree in Agriculture, a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity at KSU and a 1962 graduate of Sterling College with a degree in Elementary Education. On Aug. 19, 1951, he married
Lavel Ann Russell at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Holyrood. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant U.S. Air Force at KSU and served 1953-1955 during the Korean War. He served from 1955 to 1977 as a Liaison Officer for the Air Force Academy, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. He was a member of American Legion Post 200. He was an elementary and junior high school teacher at Claflin from 1957-1963. During 1963-64 he was the Assistant Office Manager for the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) in Reno County, before coming to Ellsworth County, serving as the ASCS Executive Director for 26 years, 1964-1990.
He served as President of District 5 of ASCS County Office Employees.
In November 1990 he was elected as Ellsworth County Commissioner for District 1, serving until his death.
He was past president of Kansas County Commissioners Association (1994), vice president of Kansas Association of Counties, past president of both K-WORC (1995) and K-CAMP (1998) and a member of Kansas Association of Counties.
Since birth he was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Holyrood, and past president of the congregation.
He was a member of the Lutheran Layman's League and a Lamplighter for Aid Association for Lutherans.
He served as past president of Hoisington Lutheran Hospital and was a board member for 20 years.
He was a salesman for Double H Auction and Realty.
He was also a member of Ellsworth County Catbackers and Holyrood Lions Club.
Survivors include: wife, Lavel; son Tony and wife Robyn, Holyrood, and son Todd and wife Rae, Leoti; one daughter Donnetta and husband Mark Suchon, Seabrook, Texas; one sister, Caroline Pflughoeft, Claflin; five grandchildren and two step grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to St. Peter Lutheran Church, Holyrood, or the Center for Basic Cancer Research at Kansas State University in care of the funeral home.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Holyrood, with interment in St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. today at Parsons Funeral Home, Ellsworth. Nov. 3, 2002
Sarah "Dolly" Strain 1923 - 2002
LARNED - Sarah "Dolly" Strain, 79, died Oct. 31 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born July 7, 1923 in Blackpool, Ireland, the daughter of Patrick and Mary Sweeney Murphy. She attended school in Ireland and became an American citizen in 1959. She married
Willis Strain on Nov. 30, 1944 in Redding, England. He died April 25, 1977. Mrs. Strain was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Cork City, Ireland, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Larned. Survivors include three sons, Patrick "Roy" Strain of Richmond, Mo., Butch Strain of Butte, Mont., and Jim Strain of Ponca City, Okla.; two daughters, Marie Jennings of Jacksonville, Texas, and Brenda Perez of Larned; one brother, Patrick "Paddy" Murphy of Cardiff, Wales; four sisters, Sheila Cottor of Blackpool Cork, Ireland, Ellen "Nellie" Coughlan of Spangle Hill Cork, Ireland, Kitty Alton and Bridget Lebeter, both of Nottingham, England; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandson. She was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Strain; one brother, Denny Murphy; one sister, Mary Murphy; and one great grandson, Nicholas Murphy Strain. Funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Morell Funeral Home of Larned with the Rev. David Collins officiating. Burial will be in the Larned cemetery of Larned. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.
