Mildred Marie Phillips 1921-2002
LARNED - Mildred Marie Phillips, 81, died Nov. 10 at St. Mary's Health Center of Jefferson City, Mo. She was born Feb. 7, 1921, at Odin, the daughter of Francis J. and Clara C. Demel Finger. She married
Roy A. Phillips on April 14, 1941, at Larned. He died January 1995. A longtime resident of Larned, she was a medical records librarian and homemaker. Mrs. Phillips was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Larned, and a lay-member of Dominican Order. Survivors include one son, Robert L. Phillips of Jefferson City; three brothers, Leonard Finger of Larned, Marvin Finger of Rozel and Francis Finger Jr. of Fayetteville, Ark.; four sisters, Dorothy Cavenah and Carolyn Urban, both of Salina, Catherine Kuhlman of Trumbull, Neb., and Mary Lou Wheeler of Great Bend; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Parish vigil will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Morell Funeral Home of Larned. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Dennis Reed officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Harold L. Hullett 1944-2002
LARNED - Harold L. Hullett, 57, died Nov. 6. He was born Dec. 16, 1944, at Larned, the son of Ralph and Grace Mornhinweg Hullett. He married
Kolita Ann Pulliam on Oct. 29, 1971. A lifetime resident of Larned, he was employed by Kansas Department of Transportation for 26 years. Hullett was a member of First United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Lyons Club and Ft. Larned Arms Association, all of Larned, and National Rifle Association. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served from March 1967 until February 1969. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Stacy Pulliam of Liberty, Mo.; four daughters, Samantha Owens of Wichita, Kelly Roberts and Shona Perez, both of Larned, and Vonda Richardson of Great Bend; four brothers, Kenneth Hullett, Edward Hullett and Clyde Hullett, all of Larned, and Larry Hullett of Hoisington; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and two grandchildren. Memorial service conducted by the family will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Revs. Charles Grant and Johnny Augmon officiating. The body was cremated. Donald Louis Trowbridge 1919-2002
RUSSELL - Donald Louis Trowbridge, 82, died Nov. 6 at Hays Medical Center of Hays. He was born Dec. 24, 1919, in Wayne County, Ill., the son of Fred Benjamin and Daisy Belle Myers Trowbridge. He was a 1938 graduate of Steward High School of Rochelle, Ill. He married
Josephine A. McKittrick on May 3, 1946, at Great Bend. A resident of Russell since 1957, coming from Wilson, he was a miller at Wilson Flour Mill, owner and operator of Ace Oil Treating Company and was a partner in establishing Bear House Truck Stop of Bunker Hill. Trowbridge was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6240 of Russell and Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge Association and a member of the 94th Infantry Division Association. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II as an artillery gun mechanic with A Battery, 301st Field Artillery Battalion, 94th Infantry Division, from Dec. 16, 1942, until Dec. 29, 1945. He was stationed in Europe, earned four bronze battle stars and left the army with the rank of technical sergeant fourth class. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, David M. Trowbridge of Wilson; two daughters, Rebecca L. Blocher and D. Caroline Trowbridge, both of Lawrence; one brother, James B. Trowbridge of Rochelle; one sister, Elsie Lamb of Muncie, Ind.; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence Trowbridge, Truman Trowbridge and Cecil Trowbridge; and three sisters, Ruby Byers, Flossie Card and Dorothy Homan. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pohlman's Mortuary of Russell with the Rev. Augustine Rohde officiating. Burial will be at Wilson Cemetery. ELLIS - Martina Unrein Flax, 78, died Nov. 6 at Ellis Good Samaritan Center. She was born April 14, 1924, at Schoenchen, the daughter of Jacob and Appolonia Kreutzer Unrein. She married
Ignatius W. Flax on Jan. 7, 1947, at La Crosse. She was a resident of Ellis. Mrs. Flax was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Daughters of Isabella, all of Ellis. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Leon Flax of Dodge City and Leroy Flax of WaKeeney; eight daughters, Martina Thomas of Noponee, Neb., Shirley Peintner Strickert of Scott City, Cecelia Werth of Hays, Catherine Webber of Franklin, Neb., Mary Jane Knapp and Elaine Riedell, both of WaKeeney, Gladys Owens of St. Francis and Corona Hoch of Medicine Lodge; three brothers, Marvin Unrein of Scott City, Kenneth Unrein of Rowland Heights, Calif., and Gary Unrein of Lincoln, Neb.; three sisters, Mildred Kirmer and Ruth Slater, both of Great Bend, and Hedy Bucl of Timken; 34 grandchildren; one step granddaughter; 11 great-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mildred Werth; two brothers, James Unrein and Edwin Unrein; and four sisters, Mary Weber, Catherine, Rose and Elizabeth. Maytha Vistuba Root 1912-2002
RUSSELL - Maytha Vistuba Root, 90, died Nov. 6 at Woodhaven Care Center of Ellinwood. She was born Jan. 17, 1912, near Yankton, S.D., the daughter of Soren and Sophia Horlyk Jensen. She married
Donald Vistuba in 1937. He died Nov. 1, 1959. She then married
Clyde S. Root on May 29, 1976, at Russell. He died in February. A resident of Russell since 1964, coming from Gorham, she was employed by JC Penney of Russell for 25 years then moved to Great Bend in 1976 and Ellinwood in 2001. Mrs. Root was a member of Congregation Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, both of Russell, First Christian Church and Eagles Auxiliary, both of Great Bend. Survivors include one son, Donald Vistuba of Gorham; one daughter, Colleen Hall of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one brother, Roy Jensen of Tacoma, Wash.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, James Vistuba; seven siblings; and one grandson, Kenneth Vistuba. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Pohlman's Memorial Chapel of Russell with the Rev. Robert Ray Gunn 1922-2002
Robert Ray Gunn, 79, of Great Bend, died Nov. 4 at Life Care Center of Wichita. He was born Nov. 30, 1922, at Great Bend, the son of Leonard and Beulah Benefield Gunn. He married
Gwennyd E. Gupton on April 22, 1951, at Greensburg. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a farmer and real estate broker. Gunn was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Elks BPO Lodge 1127, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111, American Legion Post 180 and the Kappa Sigma Social Fraternity of the University of Kansas. He was a captain in the U.S. Air Force, having served during World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Robert Rock "Rocky" Gunn of Great Bend, Brad G. Gunn of Montgomery, Texas, and Jay C. Gunn of McPherson; one daughter, Gena G. Dillard of Wichita; two sisters, Patricia Campbell of San Antonio, Texas, and Marjorie Stoskopf of Santa Maria, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Joe Gunn, Jennifer Gunn, Brittany Dillard, Brad Dillard, Jarrod Gunn, Jana Gunn, Jordan Gunn, Lauren Gunn and Garrett Gunn; and two great-grandchildren, Braylen Gunn and Kaden Lyn Gunn. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Gunn, Maurice Gunn and Richard Gunn. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Hal Staats officiating. Minnie Krug Boese 1904 - 2002
ANTHONY - Minnie Krug Boese, 98, died Nov. 5 in Anthony. She was born April 7, 1904, at Bison, the daughter of Phillip G. and Mary Weinmaster Krug. She married
Walter H. Boese on Oct. 22, 1922, at Alexander. He preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and a retired school cook. Mrs. Boese was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include two sons, Ronald Boese of Goodland and Galen Boese of Fort Smith, Ark.; three daughters, Darlene Ryan of Anthony, Lenora Stelter of Plainville and Charline Lax of Hickory Valley, Tenn.; two sisters, Luella Gray of Las Vegas, Nev., and Frieda Kiesel of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Virgil Boese and Victor Boese; one daughter, Helen; and a great-great-grandson, Richard Dean. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Alexander cemetery in Alexander. Howard Earl Rogers on Dec. 2, 1938, at Checotah, Okla. He died Feb. 24, 1980. A resident of Ellinwood since 1988, coming from Mooreland, Okla., Beaver, Okla., and Keota, Okla., she was a pastor's wife. Mrs. Rogers was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Ellinwood. Survivors include one son, Howard E. Rogers of Ellinwood; two brothers, Hubert Bobo of Checotah and Walter Bobo of Muldrow, Okla; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Cecil Bobo, Cornell Bobo, Charles Bobo and infant George Arthur Bobo; and one sister, Ethlyne Huffman. Walter Smith Jan. 4, 1939, in Scott City. He died Nov. 5, 1984. A resident of Scott City for more than 60 years, coming from Grigston, she was a retired OR Tech for Scott City Hospital. She was a member of First Christian Church of Scott City. Survivors include two daughters, Carol Burnett of Scott City and Cathy Smith of Great Bend; one sister, Mary Boxberger of Hoisington; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Hildagard E. Courson, 88, died Nov. 4 at Marshfield Care Center of Marshfield, Mo. She was born Nov. 9, 1913, in Barton County, the daughter of Henry and Molly Miller Wilhelm. She married
Paul Funk on Oct. 8, 1933. He preceded her in death. She later married
Bill Courson. He preceded her in death. A resident of Marshfield since 1995, coming from Galatia and Great Bend, she worked at Larned State Hospital, a Hoisington grocery store and was employed by Great Bend Packing for 21 years. Mrs. Courson was a member of Church of Christ and Ladies Extension Club, both of Great Bend. Survivors include one son, Kenneth Funk of Hays; two daughters, Carolyn Kisner of Derby and Beverly McCormick of Marshfield; five sisters, Martha Schneider and Viola Schneider, both of WaKeeney, Esther McMannis of Wichita, Isabelle Radke of Great Bend and Jean Bailey of Russell; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Paulette Funk; six brothers, Eddie Wilhelm, Emil Wilhelm, Ray Wilhelm, Emanual Wilhelm, Leo Wilhelm and Herbie Wilhelm; and one sister, Elsie Funk. HAYS - Irene Sander, 80, died Oct. 31 at Hutchinson. She was born May 8, 1922, at Hays, the daughter of Mike and Anna Hertel Fross. She married
Richard A. Sander on Jan. 10, 1946, at Hays. He died March 22, 1988. A resident of Hays, she was housekeeping supervisor at the Great Bend hospital for many years. Mrs. Sander was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Hays. Survivors include one son, LeRoy Sander of Great Bend; and two sisters, Helen Staab and Martina Pfeifer, both of Hays. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Victor Fross, Joseph Fross, Isidore Fross and Alfred Fross; and four sisters, Evelyn Urban, Clementine Hertel, Philomena Boucher and Isabell Rome. Rosary service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Frank X. Grinko officiating.
