Mildred H. Pelland 1924-2002
RUSSELL - Mildred H. Pelland, 77, died Sept. 6 at Wilson Nursing Home in Wilson. She was born Dec. 22, 1924, at Concordia, the daughter of Jonathan and Emily Olson Mosher. She married
Milford "Mike" Pelland on November 1943 in Beloit. A resident of Russell since 1957, coming from St. John and Concordia, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Pelland was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Russell. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Jack Pelland of Topeka; three daughters, Shirley Crawford of Bunker Hill, Kathy Bray and Debra Wehling, both of Russell; one brother, George Mosher of Clifton; one sister, Lillie Cox of Brazil, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Mosher and Fred Mosher. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Pohlman's Memorial Chapel in Russell with the Rev. Charles Steier officiating. Mary A. Drake 1923-2002
Mary A. Drake, 79 of Great Bend, died Sept. 4 in Great Bend. She was born Feb. 13, 1923, in Great Bend, the daughter of Arthur A. and Mary Ellen Keenan Campbell. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, she was retired from Fuller Brush Company as an assembly production worker. Mrs. Drake was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and St. Rose Altar Society, both of Great Bend. Survivors include two sons, John E. III and Sandra K. Drake of Lakeland, Fla., and Ronald L. and Marcia D. Drake of Great Bend; one brother, Henry "Bud" Campbell of Douglasville, Ga.; six sisters, Dorothy Greer of Bristow, Okla., Katherine Campbell, Ruth White and Patricia Gerstenkorn, all of Great Bend, Delores Maggiora of Aurora, Colo., and Mary Ellen Nieman of Ontario, Calif.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Altar Society rosary will be at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home. Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Mandi Kay Alexander 1978-2002
Mandi Kay Alexander, 24 of Great Bend, died Sept. 4 in Great Bend. She was born May 15, 1978, at Great Bend, the daughter of Guy and Karen Mullenix Sunderland. A resident of Great Bend for many years, coming from Bushton and Larned, she was a clerk at Dolly Madison and had also worked at Rainbow Bakery and Bushton Cafe. She was a member of Extreme Hope Christian Fellowship in Great Bend. Survivors include two daughters, Brianna and Kirsten, both of the home; her parents of Great Bend; one brother, Brian Brueggemann of El Reno, Okla.; two sisters, Desiree Werth and Dawn Feist, both of Hutchinson; her grandparents, Raymond and Mary Mullenix of Bushton and Etta Sunderland of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by one sister, Sue Murray. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend with the Rev. Mike Joiner officiating. John Graham 1934-2002
TOPEKA - John E. Graham, 68, died Aug. 30 at a Topeka hospital. He was born April 9, 1934, in Council Grove, the son of Nelson Everett and Vivian Corine Johnson Graham. He was a graduate of Council Grove High School. He married
Kaye Lotspeich on June 13, 1992, in Topeka. A resident of Topeka since 1974, he worked in the oil fields in the Great Bend area as well as in construction and for a railroad. He was also cook at the Topeka Rescue Mission. Graham was a volunteer with Royal Rangers youth organization at Assembly of God Church. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Chuck Graham; four daughters, Anita, Stephanie, Melanie and Sherry Cay; one brother, Larry Graham of Claflin; and four sisters, Beverly Guynn of Kentucky, Myra Lowe of Indiana, Martha Wayman of Auburn and Ann Bryant of Ellinwood. He was preceded in death by one son, Donald Graham; and one stepson, Bobby. Memorial service was Sept. 1 at Davidson Funeral Home in Topeka. Loren H. Schartz 1931-2002
Loren H. Schartz, 71 of Great Bend, died Sept. 3 at his home. He was born June 25, 1931, in rural Barton County, the son of Nick A. and Aileen A. Kimpler Schartz. A resident of Great Bend for six years, coming from Ellinwood, he was in sales. Schartz was a past member of American Legion. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Survivors include one son, Michael Schartz of Cleveland, Ark.; one daughter, Sheila Jones of Ramona, Calif.; six brothers, Kenneth J. Schartz of Sacramento, Calif., Vernon Schartz of Grants Pass, Ore., Norbert Schartz of Sutter Creek, Calif., Gerald Schartz of Hays, Tom Schartz of Phoenix, Ariz., and Pat Schartz of Ellinwood; two sisters, DeSales Feist and Mary Bowes, both of Ellinwood; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Schartz and Leon Schartz; and one sister, Celesta Bennett. There will be a private family graveside service. Wayne Clarence Ehmke 1931-2002
Wayne Clarence Ehmke, 71 of Great Bend, died Sept. 6 at his residence. He was born Jan. 29, 1931, in Kimberly, Wis., the son of Clarence and Myrtel Huntington Ehmke. He was a resident of Kansas since 1980, coming from Kimberly. Ehmke was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kimberly. Survivors include one sister, LaVerne Reed of Lyons. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lyons Municipal cemetery in Lyons with the Rev. Allen J. Woelslein officiating. LORRAINE - Herschel "Pete" Janssen, 89, died Sept. 6 at his residence. He was born Sept. 3, 1913, in Ellsworth County, the son of Lewis C. and Johanna Janssen. He married
Marian Craig on Nov. 16, 1935, in Kingman. She died Dec. 10, 1993. He married
Rosemary Feigenspan on May 14, 1997, in Lorraine. A lifetime resident of the Lorraine area, he was a retired farmer and stockman, founder of Green Garden Angus. Janssen was a member of First Baptist Church of Lorraine, American Angus Association and past president and honorary member of Kansas Angus Association. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Arlo Janssen of Columbus, Mont., and Richard Janssen of Ellsworth; three daughters, Jo Walker of Canton, Rachel Meitler of Great Bend and Joyce Cotton of Golden, Colo.; one stepdaughter, Mary K. Radenberg of Claflin; 15 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Tammy Boeken. Lawrence Emil Huslig 1916-2002
Lawrence Emil Huslig, 86 of Great Bend, died Sept. 6 at Brandon Woods Retirement Center in Lawrence. He was born March 27, 1916, at Claflin, the son of Emil and Josephine Lamatsch Huslig. He married
Helen Pivonka on June 1, 1938, at Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1937, coming from Claflin, he was an automotive parts salesman and warehouse manager for Scheufler Supply and American Parts, retiring in Jan 2, 1982. Huslig was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and a St. Rose Eucharistic minister. He was a 4th Degree member of Knights of Columbus, a past grand knight and past financial secretary. Survivors include his wife of Lawrence; three sons, James and Connie Huslig of Prairie Village, Richard and Shelia Huslig of Baltimore, Md., and Philip and Kathy Huslig of Omaha, Neb.; three daughters, Carol and James Stumpf of Omaha, Jeanette and John Stine of Overland Park, and Laura and Don Basse of Alamosa, Colo.; one sister, Augusta Huslig of Claflin; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Tony Huslig and Bernard Huslig; four sisters, Clara Lesch, Rose Bieberle, Marie Birzer and Theresa Woydziak. LA CROSSE - Leonard Schmidt, 96, died Sept. 7 at Long Term Care Unit of Rush County Memorial Hospital in La Crosse. Schmidt was born April 23, 1906, at Liebenthal, the son of John and Anna Heromena Schmidt. He married
Mathilda Depperschmidt on Nov. 7, 1927, at Liebenthal. She died Feb. 21, 1986. A resident of La Crosse, coming from Hays, he was a farmer and had worked at A.W. Carbaugh for 35 years. Schmidt was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in La Crosse and former member of St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church of Hays. Survivors include one son, John Schmidt of Grand Pass, Ore.; two daughters, Betty Schmidt of Hays and Dorothy McDermeit of La Crosse; two brothers, Monsignor George N. Schmidt of Wichita and Leo Schmidt of Great Bend; three sisters, Sister Bernadette Schmidt of Wichita, Sister Ann Mary Schmidt of Kearney, Neb., and Annie Ziegler of Collyer; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Elmer Schmidt; three sisters, Isabella Schmidt, Clestina Isenbart and Louise Dolecheck; and one great-grandson, Jamie Whitis. Charles David Pearson, 70 of Great Bend, died Sept. 7 at his residence. He was born Sept. 30, 1931, at Alta Vista, the son of John Andrew and Sophia Ina McDiffett Pearson. He married
Eleanor Mary Barnes on June 27, 1959, in Lock Berlin, N.Y. A resident of Great Bend since 1959, coming from Alta Vista, he was a school teacher and coach. Pearson was a member of First United Methodist Church, American Legion, National Educators Association, Great Bend National Educators Association and Lake Barton Golf Club, all of Great Bend. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, C. David Pearson of Hutchinson; three daughters, Ann Werth and Joan Henning, both of Great Bend, and Dawn Willms of Dublin, Ohio; four brothers, John A. Pearson Jr. of Dublin, Calif., Lloyd Pearson of Tonganoxie, Don Pearson of Concordia and Dick Pearson of Omaha, Neb.; four sisters, Bertie TenEyck of Haysville, Deloris Raby of Liberty S.C., Debbie Wilson of Americus and Doris Pearson of Emporia; and 11 grandchildren. HAYS - Pauline Zimmerman, 76, died Sept. 3 at Hays Medical Center. She was born June 24, 1926, at Collyer, the daughter of Christian and Mariana Waldman Uhrich. She married
Joe Zimmerman on Oct. 24, 1949, at Collyer. He died in June 1997. A resident of Hays since 1994, coming from Grinnell, she was a retired farm wife. Mrs. Zimmerman was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church of Hays, and former member of Immaculate Conception Church in Grinnell. Survivors include seven sons, Richard Zimmerman and Mark Zimmerman, both of Hays, Terence Zimmerman of Delphos, Gary Zimmerman of Ada, Gregory Zimmerman of Grainfield, and Lyle Zimmerman and Kyle Zimmerman, both of Grinnell; six daughters, Charlene Koster of Minneapolis, and Izene Hynes, Eileen Link, Kathleen Braun, Norene Unrein and Coleen Werth, all of Hays; two brothers, Joe Uhrich of Arizona and Cletus Uhrich of Great Bend; three sisters, Juliana Haffner, Itha Scheck and Eugenia Uhrich, all of Hays; 16 grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Darlene; five brothers, Frank Uhrich, Julius Uhrich, Leo Uhrich, George Uhrich and Alfred Uhrich; and one sister, Mary Uhrich. Richard 'Dick' Forster 1921-2002
FORSYTH, Mo. - Richard "Dick" Forster, 81, died Sept. 2 at Forsyth Care Center. He was born July 19, 1921, at Sharon Springs, the son of George and Charlotte Forster. He married
Ann Nethercot on Feb. 15, 1947, in Hutchinson. A resident of Forsyth, he was employed by Prudential Insurance Co., serving the Great Bend and Hutchinson areas for 27 years until his retirement. Forster was a member of Our Lady of the Ozarks Catholic Church of Forsyth. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II as an Army Liaison pilot in the European Theater. He was awarded a Silver Star for bravery on April 5, 1945. He served more than 27 years as a member of Kansas Air National Guard, retiring at the rank of captain. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Richard W. Forster of Pittsburg and Thomas Forster of Kimberling City, Mo.; two daughters, Susan Wright of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., and Bonnie Jessogne of Tulsa, Okla; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Forster and Eldon Forster; and one sister, Alice. Funeral service was held today at the church with the Rev. Mark Ernstmann officiating. Burial was at Ozarks Memorial Park cemetery in Branson, with military honors. Memorials are suggested to the church building fund or Community Hospices of America, both in care of the funeral home.
