LARNED - Clara A. Huddleston, 81, died Sept. 20 at Larned. She was born Oct. 9, 1920, in rural Pawnee Rock, the daughter of Sam and Eva Schultz Boese. She married
Urban Huddleston on Dec. 25, 1942, at Tulsa, Okla. Mrs. Huddleston was a charter member of Larned Assembly of God Church. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Glen Huddleston of Larned; one daughter, Sherry DeHaan of Hays; one sister, Marjorie Andrasek of Garden City; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Arthur Boese, Louis Boese, William Boese, Walter Boese, Edward Boese, Johnny Frank Boese and Emmett Boese; and six sisters, Alice Ratzlaff, Mabel Whiteman, Laura Mae Boese, Lena Whiteman, Eva Hiebert and Inez Hiebert. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned with the Rev. Richard Martin officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call from noon until 8 p.m. on Sunday, from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday and from 9 a.m. until service Tuesday, all at the funeral home. Faye C. Breckenridge 1917-2002
LARNED - Faye C. Breckenridge, 85, died Sept. 24 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned. She was born June 29, 1917, at Perry, Okla., the daughter of Harry and Virgie Breckenridge. A resident of Larned for more than 54 years, she was a retired laundry worker for Larned State Hospital. Survivors include two nieces, Jacqueline Sumerville and Patty Mason, both of Topeka. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned with the Revs. Johnny Augmon and William Harding officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Blaine Eldon Waggoner 1929-2002
WHEATLAND, Mo. - Blaine Eldon Waggoner, 72, died Sept. 22 at his residence. He was born Oct. 11, 1929, at El Dorado, the son of Forrest and Erma J. Tharp Waggoner. He married
Virginia. A resident of the Galmey area since 1995, coming from Great Bend, he was a retired Navy Masterchief Petty Officer. Waggoner was a lifetime member of Galmey Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9638, where he served as past commander. He also served as past commander of the Great Bend VFW post. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during the Korean War and Vietnam War. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Michael Waggoner of Lawrence; three daughters, Teresa Yonker of Ellinwood, Gail Urban of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Janet Martens of Hutchinson; two brothers, Ellis Max Waggoner of Miami, Okla., and Jack Waggoner of Tulsa, Okla.; one sister, Rhea Ruth Brown of Fairfield Bay, Ark.; and six grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Piedmont cemetery in Piedmont with the Rev. Leland Curtright officiating. Helen Louise Hodges 1915-2002
GARDEN CITY - Helen Louise Hodges, 86, died Sept. 23 at her daughter's residence in Garden City. She was born Dec. 28, 1915, at Los Angeles, Calif., the daughter of Earl and Pearl E. Thomason Swift. She married
John A. Hodges on Aug. 8, 1945, at Henryetta, Okla. He died Sept. 3, 1984. A resident of Garden City, coming from Great Bend and Wichita, she was a presser for Paris Cleaners and Ineeda Cleaners and assisted deaf children in lip reading at Wichita. Mrs. Hodges was a member of First Christian Church of Great Bend. Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Russell of Garden City; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one son, Eugene Sullivan; three half brothers, Leslie Horine, Walter Horine and Willie Horine; and one half sister, Bess Robbins. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Mamie I. Farris 1915-2002
STAFFORD - Mamie I. Farris, 87, died Sept. 22 at her daughter's residence in Manhattan. She was born April 6, 1915, at Pambrum, Sask., Canada, the daughter of Charlie and Shrefrey Gader. She married
Sam E. Farris on Dec. 11, 1934. He died Sept. 11, 1999. A resident of Stafford since 1982, coming from Hudson and Shaunavon, Sask., Canada, she was a homemaker and assisted her husband in farming. Mrs. Farris was a member of Stafford Nazarene Church. Survivors include two sons, Alva Farris of Stafford and Byron Farris of Shaunavon; seven daughters, Mable Austin of Stafford, Luella Schwiethale of Calgary, Marian Conwac of Stockton, Shirley Lynn of Manhattan, Shari Reimer, Kathy Watson and Joni Godenir, all of Swift Current, Sask., Canada; two brothers, Norman Gader and Fred Gader, both of Swift Current; three sisters, Mary Dandy of Charleston, W.V., Emily Sady of Calgary, Alberta, Canada and Helen Willett of Saskatoon, Sask., Canada; 22 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Samuel Bitter 1915-2002
RUSSELL - Samuel Bitter, 86, died Sept. 23 at Russell Regional Hospital in Russell. He was born Nov. 24, 1915, in Barton County, the son of George and Minnie Boger Bitter. He married
Bette Jean Schroeder May 20, 1976, in Las Vegas, Nev. A resident of Russell coming from Barton County, he was manager for CO Mammels for many years in Great Bend, operated the Sale Barn Cafe in Russell for 10 years, and had operated a club in Las Vegas for several years. Bitter was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and Masonic Lodge, both of Russell, and ISIS Consistory and Shrine of Salina. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Roger Bitter of San Jose, Calif.; one daughter, Jana Anderson of Alta Loma, Calif.; three step-sons, Michael Schuessler, Verne Schuessler and Scott Schuessler, all of Phoenix, Ariz.; one step-daugher, Tammie Connally of Phoenix; one sister, Esther Krug of Russell; two grandchildren; and seven step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Bill Bitter, Solomon Bitter, Dan Bitter and Paul Bitter; two sisters, Pauline Hammond and Clara Smith; and two step-children, Vicki Cano and Jeff Schuessler. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Pohlman's Memorial Chapel in Russell with the Rev. Henry Hartman officiating. Burial will be at Russell City Cemetery. Naomi B. Sowles 1921-2002
Naomi B. Sowles, 81, of Great Bend, died Sept. 22 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born June 30, 1921, at Elgin, the daughter of Norman I. and Alma E. Johnson Bowman. She married
George Sowles on June 3, 1944, at Oklahoma City, Okla. He died Dec. 3, 1997. A resident of Great Bend since 1956, coming from Liberal, Russell and Stafford, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Sowles was a member of First Christians Church and American Legion, both of Great Bend. Survivors include one son, Ken Sowles of Chandler, Ariz.; two daughters, Sandra Spires of Garden City and Barbara Moos of Hays; three sisters, Betty Starwalt of Minneapolis, Minn., Norma Kramer of Dodge City and Pat Knocke of Stafford; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by one son, Bill Sowles. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Great Bend cemetery with the Rev. Loren Dyke officiating. Louis E. Boucher, 93, of Great Bend, died Sept. 23 at Brandon Woods Retirement Community in Lawrence. He was born July 4, 1909, at Zurich, the son of August and Josephine Ducharm Boucher. He married
Anna Eberle on Sept. 8, 1937, at Hays. She died Sept. 18, 1994. A resident of Great Bend for 45 years, coming from Hays, he was a heavy equipment operator for the Kansas Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1974. Boucher was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend and a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus. Survivors include one son, Donald G. Boucher of Lawrence; one daughter, Treva McCain of Lansing; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home of Great Bend, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. RUSSELL - Dorothy M. Gartung, 79, died Sept. 22 at Wheatland Nursing Home in Russell. She was born Dec. 3, 1922, at Radium, the daughter of August G. and May Smelcer Gartung. A resident of Russell, coming from Radium and California, she was an assembly line worker for an aircraft plant. Aletha Williams, 93, of Great Bend, died Sept. 22 at Integrated Health Services of Great Bend. She was born Feb. 1, 1909, in Barton County, the daughter of Arthur M. and Mary Patterson Sayler. She married
Albert C. Williams on April 12, 1942, at Sublette. He died Oct. 23, 1991. A resident of Great Bend, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Williams was a member of First Christian Church, Christian Women's Fellowship and Veterans of Foreign Wars Women's Auxiliary. She was also a 4-H leader for 30 years, a Cub Scout Leader and former Sunday school teacher. Survivors include one son, Donald Lee Williams of Hattiesburg, Miss. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Lawrence Sayler, Arthur Sayler and Albert Sayler; and two sisters, Elsie Rogers and Clara Rishel. Francis "Buddy" King. He also preceded her in death. She married
Kenneth G. Bittel. They were divorced. A resident of Reddick, coming from Ellis, she was former owner and operator of Alloway's Restaurant in Ellis. Mrs. King was a member of Good Sam Club, Family Motor Coach Association and Western Kansas Association for Concerns of the Disabled of Hays. Survivors include her companion, Marlin Faust of Reddick; two sons, Michael G. Bittel of Lowell, Ore., and Donald P. Bittel of Palm City, Fla.; two daughters, Catherine A. Esfeld of Great Bend, and Marysue Mistler of Reddick; one sister, Virginia Wolf of Ellis; former spouse, Kenneth G. Bittel of Ness City; and six grandchildren. A Kansas prayer service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Ellis. A Florida sunrise service will be held at the home of Marysue Mistler in Reddick. Charles Franklin Mull 1923-2002

Ruby D. Towler on March 17, 1945, at Roanoke, Va. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Charles Franklin Mull of Derby; two daughters, Iona Dianne Betterton of Wichita and Lynn Schiller of Great Bend; one sister, Francis Cushing of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Iona Harms and Virginia McCauley. Private family services have already taken place. Louis A. LeRoy 1927-2002
Louis A. LeRoy, 75, died Sept. 19. He was born Jan. 9, 1927, in rural Barton County, the son of Jacob and Helen Miller LeRoy. He graduated with the class of 1945 at Great Bend High School, and served in the U.S. Navy for two years aboard the USS Terror. He graduated from Bailey Institute of Technology in St. Louis, Mo. He married
Mary Smith on Nov. 26, 1950. He was a lifelong farmer, resident of Barton County and member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Elks Club. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of the home; son Jeffrey of Wichita; son Mark, daughter-in-law Lea Ann and grandson Kyle of Great Bend; daughter Shari, son-in-law Robert Blase, grandchildren Jacob, Shannon, Garrett and Douglas of Great Bend; and sister JoAnn (Mrs. Duane) Stoskopf of Overland Park. He was preceded in death by sister Ruth (Mrs. George) Nettleingham of Hoisington. A service to celebrate his life will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 25, 2002, with the Rev. Hal Staats officiating. A family visitation in the church parlor will follow. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may sign the guest register at Bryant Funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church.
