Leona M. Werner 1908-2002
ELLINWOOD - Leona M. Werner, 94, died Sept. 29 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Aug. 19, 1908, at Raymond, the daughter of Joe and Marie Wurm Hirsh. She married
Leo J. Werner on Aug. 9, 1927. He died Aug. 9, 1977. A resident of Ellinwood, she was a retired cook for Ellinwood District Hospital. Mrs. Werner was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and The Heritage Club, both of Ellinwood. Survivors include one son, Wayne Werner of Raymond; one daughter, Joan Decker of Hutchinson; four sisters, Magdelyn Reif of Claflin, Delora Gall of Dodge City, Mary Jane Gibson of Wichita and Lela Mae Blakeley of Tuskahoma, Okla.; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Norman Hirsh, Joe Hirsh, Larry Hirsh and Clarence Hirsh; three sisters, Viola Baugh, Evelyn Blakeley and Gwendolyn Misejka; one grandson, Terry Decker; and one great-grandson, Steven Paul Snow Jr. Altar Society rosary will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. David Flagor officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Raymond 'Butch' J. Schonhoff 1935-2002
FOLEY, Ala. - Raymond "Butch" J. Schonhoff, 67, died Sept. 25 at his residence in Foley. He was born June 30, 1935, at Ellinwood, the son of Ben and Ellen Beckley Schonhoff. He married
Judy Murphy on March 26, 1960, at Cimarron. A resident of Foley since 1985, coming from Dodge City, he was the recycling manager at Southwest Distributing in Dodge City for 18 years until his retirement in 1985. Schonhoff was a past member of Sacred Heart Cathedral in Dodge City, Fourth Degree member and past Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council 2955 and past president of Sacred Heart PTA. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served from 1956-1958 as a specialist third class. Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Ellen Hessman of Dodge City, Christine Schonhoff Thompson of Pensacola, Fla., and Carmen Schonhoff of Foley; two sisters, Margaret Smith of Rogers, Ark., and Helen Kackley of Maryland; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Schonhoff and Edward Schonhoff. Vigil service, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Ted A. Skalsky officiating. Burial will be at Maple Grove cemetery in Dodge City with full military rites by Howard Gottschall Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1714. Bernese M. Ward 1919-2002
TOPEKA - Bernese M. Ward, 83, died Sept. 26. She was born April 1, 1919, in Trego County, the daughter of George M. and Maude V. Kackley Maddy. She was a 1937 graduate of Great Bend High School and attended Colorado Woman's College. She married
Lewis M. Ward on July 3, 1941, in Newark, N.J. He died Nov. 18, 1996. A resident of Topeka, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Ward was a member of First Congregational Church of Topeka, serving as president of the Women's Club, vocal and bell choir member. She was a member of Prime Timers and The Woman's Club and volunteered with Topeka YWCA, Battered Woman's Task Force and TARC. Survivors include two sons, L. Stephen Ward of Milwaukee, Wis., and David A. Ward of Littleton, Colo.; two sisters, Marian Knight of Phoenix, Ariz., and Louise Winter of Parachute, Colo.; and one granddaughter. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church. There will be a private burial. Friends may call until 9 tonight at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Funeral Home in Topeka. Darrell H. Hays 1928-2002
NATOMA - Darrell H. Hays, 73, died Sept. 26 at Plainville Rural Hospital in Plainville. He was born Dec. 13, 1928, in Osborne County, the son of Victor and Rosa Lillie Strutt Hays. He married
Shirley M. Campbell on Aug. 15, 1952, at Hays. She died Aug. 4, 1992. A lifetime resident of the Natoma area, he was a farmer and stockman, also working in bridge construction and the oil fields. Survivors include two sons, Darrell Hays Jr. and Terry Hays, both of Natoma; three daughters, Linda Martin of Great Bend, Marsha Erickson of Wellington and Stephanie Massier of Haysville; one sister, Shirley Huey of Manhattan; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Sherri Diane Hays; one brother, Carl Hays; and one sister, Lorene Parker. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Natoma Methodist Church in Natoma with the Rev. Lyle Miller officiating. Burial will be at Natoma Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until noon Monday, all at Pohlman's Mortuary in Natoma, and from 1 p.m. to service time Monday at the church. Velma Marie Budde 1915-2002
STAFFORD - Velma Marie Budde, 87, died Sept. 26 at Pratt Regional Medical Center. She was born Aug. 9, 1915, in rural Stafford, the daughter of Ernest and Martha Brehmer Budde. She was a graduate of Stafford High School. A lifetime resident of Stafford, she was a house cleaner for many Stafford citizens. She attended the First Baptist Church of Stafford. Survivors include three sisters, Nellie Budde, Dorothy Suiter and Evelyn Dye, all of Stafford. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford with the Rev. Guy Elliott officiating. Larry R. Peter 1939-2002
ELLINWOOD - Larry R. Peter, 63, died Sept. 27 in rural Rice County. He was born June 2, 1939, at Raymond, the son of Albert Jr. and Cleda Christiansen Peter. He was a 1966 graduate of Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. He married
Margaret Dalton on Aug. 14, 1966, at ElDorado. A lifetime Ellinwood area resident, he was a farmer and retired elementary teacher and high school football and track coach. Peter was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ of Ellinwood, American Legion and former Ellinwood firefighter. He served in the Kansas National Guard. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Stephen R. Peter of Ellinwood; two daughters, Molly E. Peter of Atlanta, Ga., and Natalie S. Peter of Hays; two brothers, Mick Peter of Tribune and Lorin Peter of Ellinwood; and one sister, JoAnn Kipple of Pueblo, Colo. He was preceded in death by one brother, Duane Peter. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Larry Young officiating. Burial will be at Hilltop cemetery in Raymond. Martha E. Millwee 1927-2002
Martha E. Millwee, 74 of Great Bend, died Sept. 27 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Oct. 20, 1927, in rural Quinter, the daughter of Howard Lee and Lucy Pearle Kinzie Flora. She married
James Millwee on July 14, 1957, at Colorado Springs, Colo. A resident of Great Bend since 1974, she was a retired church secretary at First Christian Church in Great Bend. Mrs. Millwee was a member of First Christian Church of Great Bend. Survivors include her husband of the home; two daughters, Lisa G. Nenow of Dallas, Texas, and Sandra K. Schmitt of Hutchinson; one brother, Howard Galen Flora of Emporia; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Leland Flora. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Private family burial will be held prior to memorial service at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. William E. Bone 1950-2002
BREMERTON, Wash. - William E. Bone, 52, of Bremerton died Sept. 23 at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 12, 1950, at Great Bend, the son of Art and Glenna Hoberecht Bone. He was a graduate of Great Bend High School. He joined the Navy and served aboard the USS Terrell County LST in the Vietnam War. After the Navy he moved to Shelby, Iowa to be near his mother after his father's death. He married
Sherill LeBeau June 19, 1971. They later moved to Gillette, Wyo. where he worked in the oil fields. Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman and decided to move to Bremerton to pursue his passions. After attending welding school he went to work at PSNS. Working there for 10 years, he then transferred to Bangor. After 15 years at Bangor he retired as his health did not permit him to work anymore. Mr. Bone is survived by his wife Sherill of the home; two sons, Christopher Bone; Ed (Polly) Dwyer of Bremerton; one daughter Debbie (Albert) Disher of Carlisle, Ohio; four grandsons and one granddaughter; his mother Glenna Bone; grandmother Gladys Hoberecht of Bremerton, Wa.; two sisters, Suzette Bone of Suquamish, Wa. and Colette (Bob) Plagman of Shelby, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father Art Bone; twin sisters, Constance and Candace; grandfather Bill Hoberecht and grandparents the C. E. Richardson's. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Tuell-Mckee Funeral Home. Services will be held at the Bremerton Church of the Nazarene 1 p.m. today. He will be laid to rest at the Tahoma National cemetery in Kent, Wash. Sept. 27, 2002
Geneva Gray 1919-2002
HOBBS, N.M. - Geneva Gray, 82, died Sept. 24 at Lea Regional Medical Center in Hobbs. She was born Sept. 29, 1919, at Garfield. She was a graduate of Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., and Phillips University in Enid, Okla., and received a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in guidance counseling. She married
Murvel "Jack" Gray on Sept. 19, 1946, at Kansas City. He died March 4, 2001. A resident of Hobbs, she was a special education teacher and guidance counselor at public schools in Oklahoma, Utah and Hobbs, worked with Ute Indian tribal children in Altamont, Utah, and was employed as an airplane riveter on B29's for Boeing Company in Seattle, Wash., during World War II. Mrs. Gray was a member of Highland Christian Church of Hobbs, Republican Women's Party, The Eastern Star, and the Women's Club of America, Hobbs Chapter, where she was former president. Survivors include two sons, Phillip Gray of Oklahoma City, Okla., and David Gray of Arlington, Texas; one brother, Lavern Eddy of Lindsborg; one sister, Florence Hogan-Burris of Salina; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Daniel Leslie. Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Garfield cemetery with the Rev. Dan Lundgren officiating. Sophie Scheuerman Parsons 1911-2002
ANDOVER - Sophie Scheuerman Parsons, 91, died Sept. 25 at Andover. She was born Sept. 14, 1911, near Bison, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Schreiner Scheuerman. She was a graduate of a business college in Hebron, Neb. She married
Alexander "Alex" Parsons on Jan. 4, 1935, at her parent's residence. He died June 30, 1992. A resident of Andover since 1998, coming from Hoisington and McCune, she was employed by Farm Bureau in La Crosse, and Parsons State Hospital and Training Center in Parsons for 19 years, retiring in 1976 as a food service supervisor. Mrs. Parsons was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Parsons. Survivors include 13 nephews, Harrison Scheuerman of Camdenton, Mo., Virgil Scheuerman of Winfield, Woodrow Scheuerman of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Ralph Scheuerman of Denver, Colo., Leonard Scheuerman of Larned, Robert Scheuerman of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, John Scheuerman of Plant City, Fla., Maurice Hartman of Springfield, Mo., Nelson Hartman of Sun City, Ariz., Lowell Meier of Ellinwood, Delmer Brack of Andover, John Brack of Bella Vista, Ark., and Walt Scheuerman of Westminster, Colo.; and 14 nieces, Gladys Bagby of Hutchinson, Fern Day of Woodward, Okla., Helen Hutchinson of Duncan, Okla., Shirley Scheuerman and Nima Scheuerman, both of Denver, Mildred Scheuerman of Colorado Springs, Colo., Berniece Klein and Wanda Kayartz, both of Wichita; Johnetta Rolfs of Lyons, Leona Kraus of Monument, Colo., Maryleen Brown and Joan Wunder, both of Great Bend, Connie Baldwin of LaVerne, Calif., and Nancy Laurenti of Manteca, Calif. She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Henry Scheuerman, Adam Scheuerman, John Scheuerman, Peter Scheuerman, Herman Scheuerman, Jack Scheuerman and Elmer Scheuerman; five sisters, Katie Repp, Elizabeth Hartman, Marie Meier, Sarah Kaiser and Esther Brack; and four infant siblings. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Andover with the Rev. Dean Van Stroh officiating. James 'Jim' Alan King 1951-2002
PRATT - James "Jim" Alan King, 51, died Sept. 26 at his residence in Pratt. He was born May 11, 1951, in Kansas City, the son of Melvin and Mary L. Coffman King. He married
Dottie Wagner on Aug. 14, 1971, at Kansas City. A resident of Pratt since July 2002, coming from Kansas City, he was a truck driver. King was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, having served during the Vietnam War. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Shawn Alan King of Kansas City; one daughter, Amber LeAnn King of Kansas City; his mother and stepfather, Mary and Howard "Hap" Kettering of Pratt; one brother, Bill Thomas of Pratt; five sisters, Rose Marie Thomas of California, Linda Foley of Mexico, Sue Mathe and Julia Given, both of Pratt, and Virginia Landers of Otis; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Timmy J. King. There will be no public funeral service. The body has been cremated. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday at the family home, 220 Parke St., in Pratt. Donald M. 'Don' Hamilton 1918-2002
SOLON, Iowa - Donald M. "Don" Hamilton, 84, died Sept. 19 at Solon Care Center. He was born March 5, 1918, at Great Bend, the son of Donald W. and Leila Morse Hamilton. He married
Betty May Wilson on April 22, 1956, at Denver, Colo. A resident of Solon, coming from Torrance, Calif., he was an accountant for Texaco Inc., for 35 years until his retirement. Hamilton was a member of Mariners at the First Presbyterian Church of Gardena, Calif., and a longtime member of Toastmasters International. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II as a staff sergeant, stationed primarily in the southern United States. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Teri Garrett of Iowa City, Iowa, and Cheri Keffer of Asheville, N.C.; and four grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Iowa City with the Rev. Kyle Otterbein officiating.
