George W. Ditch 1912-2002
ST. JOHN - George W. Ditch, 90, died Aug. 8 at Leisure Homestead in Stafford. He was born March 14, 1912, at Mulhall, Okla., the son of Doc Richard and Jessie VanNess Ditch. He married
Grace Ellen Franklin on Sept. 6, 1946, at Tulsa, Okla. A resident of St. John for 44 years, he was an oil pumper and woodworker/restorer. Ditch was a member of First Baptist Church, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of St. John. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Tim Ditch of Odessa, Texas; two daughters, Jennifer Gillespie and Jessie LeRoy, both of St. John; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers, Ray Ditch, Ralph Ditch, Albert Ditch, Leslie Ditch, Fred Ditch and Harold Ditch. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Kenneth Scheideman 1929-2002
Kenneth Scheideman, 72, died Aug. 7 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 29, 1929, at Timken, the son of Ben and Katie Lohrey Scheideman. He married
Dorothy L. Renner on May 8, 1955, at La Crosse. A resident of Great Bend since 1991, coming from Colorado Springs, Colo., and Rush County, he was a farmer. Scheideman was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars in La Crosse. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Korea. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Linda K. Boyer of Springfield, Mass.; one sister, Shirley Arthur of Bossier City, La.; and one grandson. He was preceded in death by one sister, Carol Chevalier. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. at La Crosse City Cemetery. Harry T. Taylor 1918-2002
LARNED - Harry T. Taylor, 84, died Aug. 6 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned. He was born Oct. 14, 1918, at Larned, the son of Ralph E. and Marie H. Lawton Taylor. A lifetime resident of Larned, he joined the family business, Taylor Abstract Company, in 1947. Taylor was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7271, former member of Kiwanis Club, and member and past commander of the American Legion, all of Larned. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served in World War II as a combat pilot of B-26 Marauders. He was also an Eagle Scout and was elected Lieutenant Governor of the first Boys State of Kansas. Survivors include one brother, Maxwell Taylor of Topeka; and one sister, Virginia Keast of Larned. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Jim Hawthorne officiating. Inurnment will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may sign the registrar book from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. Dr. Larry Gene Bowman 1935-2002
DENTON, Texas - Dr. Larry Gene Bowman, 67, died July 28 at his residence in Denton. He was born June 11, 1935, at Hutchinson, the son of Donferd Lon and Mary Lillian Dean Bowman. He received his bachelor's degree in 1958 and master's degree in 1959, both from Fort Hays State University, and a Ph. D in 1967 from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. He married
Sarah Margaret Merten on Jan. 25, 1958. She died Oct. 30, 2001. A resident of Denton since 1966, he was a professor of history from 1962-1966 at Pittsburg State University and from 1966-1998 at the University of North Texas in Denton, where he also served as director of the Cooperative Education program from 1983-1997. Survivors include one son, Curtis Bowman of Philadelphia, Pa.; and one sister, Donna Bowman of Denver, Colo. Graveside service was held Aug. 3 at Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton. Memorial service will be held Aug. 17 at Mulkey-Mason Chapel in Denton. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Ann's Haven Hospice, in care of Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Denton. Donald T. Jones 1931-2002
JETMORE - Donald T. Jones, 70, died Aug. 7 at Hodgeman County Long Term Care Center in Jetmore. He was born Sept. 22, 1931, in Hodgeman County, the son of Tracy and Nettie Bell Jones. A lifetime resident of the Jetmore area, he was a stockman. Jones was a member of United Presbyterian Church in Jetmore. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Survivors include his mother of Jetmore; and one sister, Sandra Hastings of Jetmore. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Revs. Bill McConnelee and Mitch Reece officiating. Burial will be at Fairmount cemetery in Jetmore with military graveside rites. Jimmie L. Downing 1932-2002
ELLINWOOD - Jimmie L. Downing, 69, died Aug. 6 in Tyler, Texas. He was born Oct. 3, 1932, at Maize, the son of Stephen Holcome and Lila Rush Downing. He married
Virginia L. Hancock on Aug. 21, 1954, at Wichita. He graduated with a Ph. D from Kansas State University, an MS in education from Wichita State University and a bachelor's degree from Friends University. A resident of Ellinwood since 1967, he was past president of Barton County Community College of Great Bend, served as Economic Development Director, director of Technical Education, Dean of Students, Dean of Faculty, interim president, all at Barton County Community College, and interim president of Cloud County Community College in Concordia. He also was former teacher and coach at Clearwater and Newton, and was high school principal at Esbon and Southwestern Heights High School in Plains. He worked to promote community college relationships with Community College in Chengdu, China, and served as a consultant to other community colleges. He was co-owner of The Showcase in Ellinwood. Downing was a member of the Board of Governors for the National American University in Rapid City, S.D., the Golden Belt Community Foundation, Executive board of the Cougar Booster Club, the Cougar Booster Hall of Fame. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Scott Jamison Downing of Flower Mound, Texas, Gregory Lynn Downing of Raytown, Mo., and Cory Stephan Downing of Junction City; one sister, Shirley Horrell of Roscoe, Ill.; and three grandchildren. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ellinwood with the Rev. Andy Keltner officiating. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Severin A. Scheck 1918-2002
WALKER - Severin A. Scheck, 84, died Aug. 4 at Hays Medical Center. He was born Feb. 2, 1918, at Walker, the son of Andrew J. and Barbara Vonfeldt Scheck. He married
Isabelle Dechant on Feb. 20, 1939, at Walker. She died April 14, 1967. A lifetime resident of the Walker area, he was a farmer. Scheck was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Walker. Survivors include three daughters, Jeneice Rohr and Sharon Schoendaller, both of Walker, and Carol McAdoo of Russell; one brother, Julius Scheck of Great Bend; three sisters, Evelyn Scheck of Great Bend, Mary Ann Elliott of Teague, Texas, and Helen Woodword of Wichita; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four infant children, Gerald Scheck, Joseph Scheck, Severin Scheck Jr., and Cindy Scheck; five brothers, Andrew Scheck, Richard Scheck, Raymond Scheck, John Scheck and infant, Joseph Scheck; two sisters, Amelia Lang and Regina Miller. Vigil service will be at 7 tonight at Cline's Mortuary in Victoria. Funeral service will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. David Gottschalk officiating. LARNED - Donald E. Burnett, 95, died Aug. 5 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Aug. 8, 1906, in Stafford County, the son of Ray and Laura Metz Burnett. He married
Edith Helen Lowrey on Feb. 14, 1932, at Larned. A resident of Larned since 1930, coming from Great Bend and Dodge City, he was owner and operator of a theater and a farmer. Burnett was a member of Presbyterian Church, Kiwanis, Masonic Lodge 167 and Consistory, all of Larned. He was also a member of Midian Shrine of Wichita and building chairman for Community Hospital Committee in Larned. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Donald L. Burnett of Larned; one brother, Loren Burnett of Reno, Nev.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one son, Frederick Allen Burnett; two brothers, Dale Burnett and Vernon Burnett; and one sister, Dorothy Davis. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned with the Rev. Jim Hawthorne officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Donald D. Jurgensen, 72, of Great Bend, died Aug. 5 in Great Bend. He was born Feb. 5, 1930, in Barton County, the son of Edward and Lena Jurgensen. He married
Celina E. "Cy" on Oct. 28, 1957, at Las Cruces, N.M. She died April 15, 1995. A lifetime resident of Barton County, he was a bricklayer and journeyman. Jurgensen was a member of Eagles Lodge. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors include six stepdaughters, Betty Hejny of Olmitz, Sandy Janky of Texas, Cheryl Smith, Beverly Herrod and Judy Cregger, all of Great Bend, and Linda Jones of Hutchinson; two brothers, Merle Jurgensen of Great Bend and Edward Jurgensen of Wichita; and one sister, Alverna Holopirek of La Crosse. He was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Freda Smith; one brother, Leonard Jurgensen; and one sister, Edna Orebaugh. LA CROSSE - Edna M. Grumbein, 94, died July 31 at Rush County Memorial Hospital in La Crosse. She was born Feb. 24, 1908, in Rush County, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Scheuerman Rothe. She married
Aubrey E. Grumbein. He died May 17, 1978. A lifetime resident of Rush County, she was a working farm wife until her retirement. Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Corbet of Raleigh, N.C.; one sister, Emma Schaben of La Crosse; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Selma Weisner, Juanita Allen and Dora Serpan. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Janousek Funeral Home Chapel in La Crosse with the Rev. Otto William Lang Jr., 83 of Great Bend, died Aug. 4 at Integrated Health Services of Great Bend. He was born April 8, 1919, at Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of Otto William and Lillian I. Hermansen Lang Sr. He married
Mary Florence Rider on July 28, 1943, at Washington, D.C. A resident of Great Bend since 1945, coming from New York, he was an oil field contractor until his retirement from Halliburton Services in July 1983. Lang was a member of First Church of the Nazarene. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Donald E. Lang of Great Bend and Alvin W. Lang of Wichita; one daughter, Mary Beth Bolyard of Pratt; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Lillian Gray. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend with the Rev. Mark Pennington officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Enid cemetery in Enid, Okla. Lloyd A. Marker 1920-2002
STERLING - Lloyd A. Marker, 82, died Aug. 4 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, in Wichita.
He was born Feb. 7, 1920, at Drumright, Okla., the son of Elva and Dessie Landis Marker.
He married
Sylvia Van Norman on Oct. 30, 1937, at Lyons.
A resident of Sterling for 63 years, he was an oil field driller for 25 years, operator of Sterling Power Plant for 17 years and was employed as power plant operator for the Hutchinson Reformatory for four years.
Marker was a former charter president for Mid-K Campers.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Bob A. Marker of Hutchinson and Larry E. Marker of Wilson; three sisters, Alberta Mowery of Nickerson, Ruth Ogden of Great Bend and Lorene Bush of Buckner, Mo.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Elmer Marker, Cleo Marker and Ralph Marker; one sister, Marie Shaw.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sillin Funeral Home in Sterling with Jerry Fenwick officiating.
Burial will be at Sterling Community Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2-7 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday, all at the funeral home.
