Robert 'Harley' Yancey 1928-2002
BELLA VISTA, Ark. - Robert "Harley" Yancey, 73, died July 27 at his residence in Bella Vista. He was born Dec. 19, 1928, at Asher, Okla., the son of Joe and Isabelle Yancey. He married
Miriam Cowley. She preceded him in death. He then married
Norma Curry Shafer. A resident of Bella Vista since 1988, coming from Great Bend, he was an oil well tester for Lane Wells Co., and owner and operator of Petro Log Inc. Yancey was a Mason and member of Nomad Shrine Club, a 50-year member of American Legion and attended St. Theodore's Episcopal Church in Bella Vista. Survivors include his wife of the home; two stepsons, Kevin Shafer of Pleasant Hill, Calif., and Stu Shafer of Oskaloosa; two stepdaughters, Melinda Huston of Lawrence and Karen Johnson of Iowa City, Iowa; two sisters, Betty Jo St. Germaine of Tucson, Ariz., and Mary Belle Ahnert of Great Bend; and 10 stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Clyde Yancey. A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Aug. 12 at the church with the Rev. Craig E. Gavin officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Hospice, in care of the funeral home. July 30, 2002
Olive A. Unruh 1910-2002
LARNED - Olive A. Unruh, 91, died Aug. 26 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned. She was born Oct. 21, 1910, at Nottingham, England, the daughter of Thomas and Mabel Birkin Weston. She was a 1931 graduate of Kismet High School. She married
Elton R. Unruh on May 25, 1936, at Kismet. He died June 29, 1992. A resident of Larned since 1994, coming from Enid, Okla., she was a homemaker and school teacher. Mrs. Unruh attended Larned Assembly of God Church. Survivors include one son, Robert Unruh of Leesburg, Fla.; one daughter, Gloria Martin of Larned; two sisters, Edith Weston and Ethel Blome, both of Hugoton; six grandchildren; and five great-granddaughters. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Richard Martin officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Park cemetery in Enid. Robert L. 'Bob' Johnson 1940-2002
ROLLA, Mo. - Robert L. "Bob" Johnson, 62, died Aug. 22. He was born May 2, 1940, at Enderlin, N.D., the son of Raymond and Adelaide Card Johnson. He married
Beverly Sovereign on Jan. 21, 1961. A resident of Rolla, he was a cartographic technician for the United States Geological Survey for 40 years, until his retirement in 2000. Johnson was a former longtime member of Rolla Lions Club. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Jeff Johnson of Chicago and Greg Johnson of Madison, Wis.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Shirley Mammel. Memorial service was held Aug. 25 at Null & Son Funeral Home in Rolla with Kenneth Salts officiating. Esther I. Schafer 1914-2002
RUSSELL - Esther I. Schafer, 88, died Aug. 28 at Russell Regional Hospital in Russell. She was born July 10, 1914, at Galatia, the daughter of Henry and Pauline Strecker Nuss. She married
Elmer Schafer on June 4, 1939, at Milberger. He died Aug. 3, 1969. A lifetime resident of the Russell area, she was a homemaker and was a cook for the Tower and O'Brien Cafes and Red's Chicken House. Mrs. Schafer was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Russell. Survivors include two sons, Geary Schafer of Gorham and Robert Schafer of Patchogue, N.Y.; three daughters, Shirley Pitchford of Quinton, Okla., Ruth Craig and Roberta Hupfer, both of Russell; one brother, Albert Nuss of Wyoming; one sister, Josephine Marteney of Bushton; one foster brother, Gerold Nuss of Plainville; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Elmer Schafer, Jr.; five brothers, Carl Nuss, Roy Nuss, Harlan Nuss, Melvin Nuss, and an infant brother; two sisters, Dorlene Sanders and Isbel Christopher. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church in Russell with the Rev. Harlan Kaden officiating. Burial will be at Milberger Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, all at Pohlman's Mortuary in Russell, and from 1 p.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Dorothy M. McMillan 1913-2002
STAFFORD - Dorothy M. McMillan, 89, died Aug. 26 at Pratt Regional Medical Center in Pratt. She was born March 24, 1913, at Shelbyville, Mo., the daughter of Edgar and Edith Ramsey Ralls. She married
Raymond McMillan on March 6, 1943, at Hutchinson. He died Jan. 26, 1994. A longtime resident of Stafford, she was a bookkeeper for Wes Lander Motor Co. for 25 years. Mrs. McMillan was a member of Christian Church, Business and Professional Women and Stafford Bowling League, all of Stafford. Survivors include two sons, Jerry McMillan of Stafford and Dennis McMillan of Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Karen Ault officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. ELLINWOOD - Billie L. Holl, 94, died Aug. 27 at Woodhaven Care Center in Ellinwood. She was born Aug. 14, 1908, at Stroud, Okla., the daughter of Thomas Milam and Evie Amanda Flesher Jones. She married
Joseph Holl on July 2, 1938, at Oklahoma City, Okla. He died April 9, 1971. A resident of Ellinwood since 1968, coming from rural Great Bend, she was a homemaker, child care provider and retired practical nurse. Mrs. Holl was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Ellinwood and former member of Sunnyside HDU. Survivors include two daughters, Sherrie Siefers and Ruth Schlochtermeier, both of Ellinwood; one sister, Margeline Henry of Dana Point, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Neva Ann Disque; two brothers, Thomas Jones and Ralph Jones; and three sisters, Mary Avery, Della Sherman and Ruth Thomas. Prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Andy Keltner officiating. LARNED - Flora A. "Flo" Stafford, 92, died Aug. 26 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born March 18, 1910, at Seward, the daughter of Ulysses and Ava Parker Gore. She married
Evan Scott Stafford on Feb. 6, 1937, at Olathe. He died Aug. 8, 1990. A resident of Larned since 1971, coming from California, she was a meat processor. Mrs. Stafford was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Great Bend. Survivors include two daughters, Irma Freeman of Belton, Mo., and Marilyn Jo Alexander of Duncanville, Texas; one sister, Margaret Stromer of Larned; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Lois Denny; one brother, Edward Gore; and four sisters, Lola Smith, Jennie Barstow, Kay Harms and Minnie McMillan. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned with the Rev. Cliff Summers officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. LARNED - Marian C. Dryden, 88, died August 26 at Integrated Health Services in Great Bend. She was born Dec. 27, 1913, at Spearville, the daughter of Arthur and Jesse Dekalb Erickson. She married
Arnold Lamar Dryden April 27, 1932, at Larned. He died Aug. 3, 1993. A longtime resident of Larned, she was a homemaker. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Larned. Survivors include one daughter, Elaine Divilbiss of Edmond, Okla.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Carolyn Dryden; one brother, Forrest Erickson; two sisters, Cloedene Gray and Ardythe Buerosse. Graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Larned cemetery with the Rev. Curtis Reinhardt officiating. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. BAZINE - Reuben Ralph Kleweno, 92, died Aug. 22 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita. He was born July 8, 1910, at Bison, the son of George and Katie Gillig Kleweno. He married
Mildred Marjorie Moore on Feb. 23, 1928, at Dodge City. She died Sept. 29, 1969. A longtime resident of Bazine, he was a farmer and stockman. Kleweno was a member of Bazine United Methodist Church and Hays Senior Center. Survivors include one daughter, Aleda Freidenberger of Wichita; one sister, Inez Royer of Ness City; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Donald Kleweno; and two sisters, Alice Margheim and Tillie Martin. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Warren L. Luther 1920-2002
HAYS - Warren L. Luther, 81, died Aug. 24 at Hays Medical Center. He was born Sept. 19, 1920, in Barton County, the son of Dillard and Gertrude Miller Luther. He was a 1938 graduate of Great Bend High School. He married
Letha J. Lofland April 6, 1949, in Kansas City. A resident of Hays, he was manager of Murray Casing Crew and a drilling superintendent for many different oil companies, retiring in 1961. He owned Hays Answering Service for 13 years, selling it in 1976. Luther was a member of First United Methodist Church in Hays. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Terri Lynn Kindsfather of Golden, Colo., and Kerri Ann Brown of Hutchinson; one brother, Leland Luther of Great Bend; one sister, Bonnie Crawford of Wichita; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lowell Luther and Dillard Luther Jr. A prayer service will be at 6 tonight at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hays with the Rev. William C. Lawrence Eugene Lyman, 71, of Great Bend died Aug. 23 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 26, 1930 at Healy, the son of Sidney J. and Pauline Kuehn Lyman. He married
Maria K. Goehler, Dec. 17, 1953 at Boeblinger, Germany. A resident of Great Bend for 33 years, coming from Healy, he was a retired farmer and machine operator. Lyman was a member of American Legion in Great Bend. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Larry E. Lyman of Ventura, Calif.; one daughter, Jeannie Montgomery of Temecula, Calif.; two brothers, Richard L. Lyman of Lenexa, and Neil L. Lyman of Larned; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandchild, Zachariah Lyman. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at The First Church of God in Great Bend, with the Revs. Dick Ogle and Thomas Swain officiating. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Dighton Memorial cemetery in Dighton. There is no visitation suggested. Memorials are suggested to Benevolent Fund in care of the church. Bonnie E. Hemken 1917-2002
LA CROSSE - Bonnie E. Hemken, 85, died Aug. 22, at La Crosse. She was born June 22, 1917 at Glen Elder, the daughter of David G. and Lydia Grosch Zimmerman. She was a 1935 graduate of Hays High School, and received her Bachelor's Degree in violin performance from Fort Hays State University in 1939. She married
Martin Hemken, Aug. 23, 1942 at Hays. He died Jan. 22, 2002. A lifetime resident of Kansas, she was a music teacher at Lorraine, Otis, and La Crosse. Mrs. Hemken was a member of Sal Music Fraternity, American Guild of Organists, a charter member of Pro Art, and a 40 year plus member of Fort Hays State College Community Symphony Orchestra. Survivors include several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by three brothers: David J. Zimmerman, Raymond Paul Zimmerman, and Homer Phillip Zimmerman. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Hope Lutheran Church in Rush Center, with the Rev. Maurice Schaus officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse City Cemetery. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. today at Janousek Funeral Home. LaVonne Barton, Nov. 12, 1954 at Russell. A resident of Boulder, coming from Russell, he was an oil field worker and engineer for IBM. Beuhler was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell, Masonic Lodge in Bucker Hill, and American Legion at Kansas City. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors include his wife of the home, two sons, Kendall Buehler of Russell, and Bradley Buehler of Aravda, Colo.; one daughter, Rhonda Storey of Cedar Rapid, Iowa; one brother, Steve Buehler of Hutchinson; one sister, Arlene Ubert of Wichita; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Velma Barnhardt. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Harlan Kaden officiating.
