David Hollis LaTourell Jr. 1955-2002
LYONS - David Hollis LaTourell Jr., 46, died July 22 in McPherson County, as the result of an automobile accident. He was born Dec. 3, 1955, at Blue Earth, Minn., the son of David H. and Janice A. Halvorson LaTourell Sr. He was a 1974 graduate of Emmetsburg High School. A resident of Lyons since 1976, coming from Emmetsburg, Iowa, he was a printer assistant. LaTourell was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Lyons. Survivors include his parents; and three brothers, Jim LaTourell and Paul LaTourell, both of Lyons, and Dan LaTourell of Great Bend. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons with the Rev. Allen J. Woelzlein officiating. Burial will be at Lyons Municipal Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-7 tonight at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the church or Bell & Star Fund, both in care of the funeral home. July 24, 2002

Tommy Elton Hopkins 1941-2002
Tommy Elton Hopkins, 60, of Great Bend, died July 22 at his residence in Great Bend. He was born Dec. 1, 1941, at Garden City, the son of Floyd Earl and Inez Craton Green Hopkins. He married Beverly M. Winters on Dec. 14, 1988, at Topeka. She died Feb. 16, 1998. A resident of Great Bend for 48 years, coming from Garden City, he worked for Russ' Roofing Company for 20 years. Survivors include three sons, Leslie W. Hopkins and Tommy Ray Hopkins, both of Great Bend, and Darren Lynn Hopkins of Hutchinson; one daughter, Pamela Marie Hopkins of Hutchinson; one stepson, Harold S. Winters of Great Bend; three brothers, Floyd Hopkins of Ellinwood, William J. Hopkins of Walnut Grove, Mo., and Loren Hopkins of Ellsworth; one sister, Shirley Steimetz of Garden City; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Earl Hopkins; and one sister, Jean Geary. There will be no services. Cremation has taken place. Memorials are suggested to Tommy Hopkins Memorial Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. July 24, 2002

Hilda A. Stoss 1907-2002
HUTCHINSON - Hilda A. Stoss, 95, died July 22 at Dillon Living Center in Hutchinson. She was born June 3, 1907, in rural Barton County, the daughter of Louis Fleischer and Anna Marie Ohnmacht Kober. She was a 1925 graduate of Great Bend High School and a 1951 graduate of Emporia State University. She married Fred B. Stoss on Jan. 12, 1928, at Ellsworth. He died Aug. 14, 1976. A resident of Hutchinson since 1952, coming from Dodge City, she was a homemaker and teacher. Mrs. Stoss was a member of First Baptist Church, AARP and Queen Esther Keystone Sunday School Class. Survivors include four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Major Fred B. Stoss Jr.; five stepbrothers, Frank Kober, Leo Kober, Alexander Kober, Gerome Kober and Gustav Kober; and one stepsister, Elsie Kober Maddock. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson with the Rev. Robert E. Fly officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Reno County, in care of the mortuary. July 24, 2002

Nick Shull 1967-2002
DIGHTON - Nick Shull, 35, died July 22 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. He was born July 10, 1967, at Scott City, the son of Horton and Beverly Burghart Shull Jr. He was a 1986 graduate of Great Bend High School. A resident of Dighton since 1994, coming from Great Bend, he was a cook at Pioneer Inn and Black Angus, both in Great Bend, and head cook at American Legion Post 190. Survivors include his mother of Great Bend; three brothers, Mark Shull of Plano, Texas, Chris Shull of Harper and Jeff Shull of Great Bend; and one sister, Ann Shull of Great Bend. He was preceded in death by one brother, Tim Shull. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dighton Memorial cemetery with Milton Raymer officiating. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, in care of Boomhower Funeral Home in Dighton. July 24, 2002

Kenneth Ray Cox 1943-2002
SOUTH HUTCHINSON - Kenneth Ray Cox, 59, died July 23 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center in Wichita. He was born Jan. 28, 1943, at Hutchinson, the son of Tom E. and Florence LeeAnna Larson Cox. He was a graduate of Hutchinson High School. He married Lois Horyna on June 10, 1976, at McPherson. A lifetime resident of Hutchinson, he was a machine operator for J&J Drainage in Hutchinson, until his retirement in January 2002, and was lead singer for Country Pride for several years. Cox was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served on the USS Suribachi. Survivors include his wife of the home; and two brothers, Bob Lawson of South Hutchinson and Billy Earnest Cox of El Dorado. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lois Jane Railsback and LeeAnna Mae Cox. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Johnson and Sons Memorial Chapel in Hutchinson with Robert Raigoza officiating. Burial will be at Fairlawn Burial Park. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Elmdale Senior Center, in care of the funeral home. July 24, 2002

Irene Rose Lamoree Pack 1914-2002
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Irene Rose Lamoree Pack, 88, died July 10 at her residence in Colorado Springs. She was born April 30, 1914, at Russell, the daughter of Arza and Marie Pekarek Lamoree. She married Glenn H. Pack on Oct. 3, 1937. He died in 1964. A resident of Colorado Springs, she was the manager of Ft. Bliss Officers Wives Thrift Shop for several years. Survivors include one daughter, Judith I. Conser of Colorado Springs; one sister, Norma M. Hammeke of Great Bend; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Floyd E. Lamoree. Memorial service will be held Thursday at Flintridge Retirement Center in Colorado Springs. Funeral service was held July 17 at El Paso, Texas. Burial was at Fort Bliss National Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Kaster-Maxon & Futrell Funeral Home in El Paso. July 24, 2002

Rose Arlene Tucker 1920-2002
SEWARD - Rose Arlene Tucker, 82, died July 22 at Golden Plains Care Home in Hutchinson. She was born Feb. 6, 1920, at St. John, the daughter of Ralph William and Alta Belle Myers Hall. She married Martin Junior Tucker on Oct. 27, 1937, at Pratt. He died Jan. 13, 1990. A longtime resident of Seward, she was a homemaker, cook and nurse's aide at St. John District Hospital. Mrs. Tucker was a member of HDU, Peace Church of Hudson and Martha Rebekah Lodge of St. John. Survivors include two sons, Robert Tucker of Santa Clara, Calif., and Randall Tucker of St. John; three daughters, Kay Myrick of San Mateo, Calif., Jeannene Muci of Hutchinson and Kathleen Bright of Salina; one brother, Ronald Hall of Kelso, Wash.; four sisters, Carol VanLieu of Denver, Colo., Lorraine Bothum of Klamath Falls, Ore., Beverly Adams of Dewey, Okla., and Charlotte Schmidt of Duncan, Okla.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Martin Eldean Tucker; three brothers, Chester Hall, Verle Hall and Wilford Hall; and one granddaughter, Suzette Marie Fosnaugh. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Minnis Chapel in St. John with the Rev. Larry Dodge officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, in care of the chapel. July 25, 2002

Hazel Mae Ingersoll 1924-2002
FORT MORGAN, Colo. - Hazel Mae Ingersoll, 77, died July 21 near Wheatland, Wyo., as the result of an automobile accident. She was born Sept. 21, 1924, at Keya Paha County, Neb., the daughter of Ernest and Florence Gossard. She married Gareld Papke on Jan. 14, 1944, at Bassett, Neb. He died Nov. 28, 1992. She then married Delbert Ingersoll on Sept. 14, 1993, at Brush, Colo. He died July 12, 2001. She was a resident of Great Bend for less than a year, coming from Fort Morgan, where she had lived for more than 30 years. Mrs. Ingersoll was a member of the New Testament Baptist Church in Brush. Survivors include three daughters, Jeroldine Humphrey of Buffalo, Wyo., Jackie Hastings of Great Bend and Connie McMillan of Casper, Wyo.; two stepdaughters, Delby French and Lorraine Lavar, both of Ft. Morgan; one brother, Lester Gossard of Diamondville, Wyo.; four sisters, Lillian Jacox of Scottsbluff, Neb., Marie Domino of New Castle, Wyo., Wilma Painter of Rupert, Idaho, and Shirley Dillon of Topeka; nine grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son and two grandchildren. Funeral was today at Heer & Jolliffe Mortuary Chapel in Ft. Morgan. Burial was at Memory Gardens. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the mortuary. July 25, 2002

Zesper Marie Franz 1917-2002
LARNED - Zesper Marie Franz, 84, died July 23 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, in Wichita. She was born Oct. 13, 1917, in rural Alexander, the daughter of Robert Eli and Celia Weber Skelton. She married LaVern E. Franz on Aug. 8, 1936, at Kinsley. He died April 4, 1993. A lifetime resident of Pawnee County, she was a sales clerk for Oliver Shoe Store and other retail stores in Larned. Mrs. Franz was a member of Christian Women Fellowship and Business and Professional Women, both of Larned. Survivors include one son, Dennis Franz of Salina; one daughter, Phyllis Jean Roudybush of Annandale, Va.; four brothers, Russell Skelton of Great Bend, Robert Skelton of Fresno, Calif., Leo V. Skelton of Larned and Dale F. Skelton of Grand Junction, Colo.; two sisters, Virginia Sallee of Great Bend and Maxine Nelms of Larned; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned with the Rev. Dan Lundgren officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, in care of the mortuary. July 25, 2002

Melvin Ray Folk 1924-2002
BUSHTON - Melvin Ray Folk, 78, died July 26 at his residence in Bushton. He was born Jan. 1, 1924 at Lorraine, the son of Perry Russell and Carrie Augustina Drogemeier Folk. he married Mary Perkins, Dec. 29, 1951, at Wellington. A resident of the Bushton area, he was a driver's license examiner for the state of Kansas. Folk was a member of First Baptist Church in Lorraine, Masonic Lodge 146 in Ellsworth, American Legion Post 200 in Holyrood, and Veterans of Foreign Wars post 7428 in Hoisington. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Jerry Folk of Bushton, and Bob Folk of Great Bend; one daughter, Marsha Folk of Lyons; two brothers, Roy Folk and Max Folk both of Holyrood; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Bradley Folk; two brothers, and one sister. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Parsons Funeral Home in Ellsworth, with the Revs. David Trott and Janet Myers officiating. Burial will be at Lorraine Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Monday and from 8 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to BCDI building in Bushton in care of the funeral home. July 28, 2002

Maxlyn Schmidt 1922-2002
PAWNEE ROCK - Maxlyn Schmidt, 80, died July 25 in Wichita. She was born May 26, 1922 at Great Bend, the daughter of Max and Effie Unruh Smith. She was a graduate of Bethel College. She married Earl Alvin Schmidt Oct. 12, 1946 at Pawnee Rock. A resident of Pawnee Rock, she was a school teacher in Pawnee Rock and Larned. Mrs. Schmidt was a member of Bergthal Mennonite Church in Pawnee Rock, a Sunday School teacher, trustee treasurer, and Peace and Social Concerns Committee of Western District Conference. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son Robert Schmidt of Little Rock, Ark.; one daughter Ann Pasnick of Elmhurst Ill.; one sister Ruth Graber of Moundridge; and five grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be at Mennonite Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the church in care of the funeral home. July 28, 2002

Benjamin 'Benny' E. Mills 1927-2002
HOISINGTON - Benjamin "Benny" E. Mills, 75, died July 27 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born June 5, 1927, at Bristow, Okla., the son of Harry T. and Sarah Eldon Mills. He was a 1945 graduate of Hoisington High School. He married Merna B. Houchin on June 26, 1949, at McLeansboro, Ill. A resident of Hoisington for 55 years, he was a car man for Union Pacific Railroad until his retirement in 1990. Mills was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Great Bend, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7428 and American Legion Post 286, both of Hoisington. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Ben Mills of Hoisington; one brother, Melvin Eugene Mills of Salem, Ill.; one sister, Ruth Adams of Hoisington; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one infant son, Jimmie Allen Mills; one infant daughter, Sylvia Jeanine Mills; and two brothers, J.D. Mills and Harry Mills Jr. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington with the Rev. Dwight Dozier officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington cemetery with military rites. Friends may call until 9 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. July 29, 2002

Hobert Leroy Fowler 1916-2002
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Hobert Leroy Fowler, 85, died July 26. He was born Dec. 29, 1916, at Holdenville, Okla., the son of Jim and Bertha Adams Fowler. He married Raye in 1939. A resident of Oklahoma City, he was a superintendent for Tri State Building and Supply Company. Fowler was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; four daughters, Patsy Ann Williams of Oklahoma City, Cheryl Yvonne Herr of McKinney, Texas, Ramona Dawn Conover of Midwest City, Okla., and Pamela Jean Varone of Arma; one brother, L.C. "Pete" Fowler of Seminole, Okla.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one brother, James Fowler; and two sisters, Hazel Gosey and Thelma Pearl Fowler. Graveside services were today at Arlington Memory Gardens. Barnes & Johnson Funeral Home of Midwest City was in charge of arrangements. July 30, 2002
