WILSON - Ethel M. Miller Macek, 97, died May 31. She was born July 17, 1904, at Wilson. She married
Edward Macek. He died Feb. 7, 1966. A resident of Wilson, she was a homemaker. Survivors include one son, Eugene Macek of Wilson; one daughter, Edna Klema of Great Bend; one brother, Steve Miller of Kanopolis; three sisters, Frances Adamek of Ellsworth, Adeline Vondra of Glendale, Ariz., and Martha Hill of Arkansas City; five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Miller and George Miller; and three sisters, Lucy Kottas, Elizabeth Stumpff and Dorothy Adamek. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Foster Mortuary Chapel in Wilson. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wilson. Burial will be at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church cemetery in Wilson. Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, and 8 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the mortuary. Winifred 'Winnie' Irene DeGarmo 1909-2002
ST. JOHN - Winifred "Winnie" Irene DeGarmo, 92, died May 31 at Leisure Homestead in St. John. She was born Nov. 4, 1909, in St. John, the daughter of William "Billie" Arthur and Agnes Ellen Smith. She was a 1928 graduate of St. John High School. She married
Ben DeGarmo on Jan. 1, 1931, at rural St. John. He preceded her in death. A lifetime resident of St. John, she was a homemaker. Mrs. DeGarmo was a member of First United Methodist Church, Martha Rebekah Lodge 425 and Saddle Club, all of St. John. Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Jean Erickson of Walnut Creek, Calif.; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Keith DeGarmo; one brother, Roy Smith; and one grandchild, Shelley Diane Erickson. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Minnis Chapel Inc. of St. John with the Rev. Tom Harrison officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Ronald Rey Palacio 1964-2002
Ronald Rey Palacio, 37, died June 29 at his residence in Great Bend.
He was born Nov. 4, 1964, at Great Bend, the son of Manuel Palacio and Louise Bryant Rodriguez.
He was a lifetime resident of Great Bend. Palacio was a member of Cornerstone Fellowship Church in Great Bend.
Survivors include one son, Caleb Larson of Hoisington; one daughter, Ronice Palacio of Susank; two stepsons, Chet Whetham and Brett Whetham, both of Susank; his father of Kansas City, Mo.; his mother of Great Bend; two brothers, Jeff Palacio and James Bolt, both of Great Bend; and one sister, Shella Bolt of Great Bend.
Additional survivors include his stepfather, Jose Rodriguez of Great Bend; and one brother, Jesse Palacio of Great Bend.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend with the Rev. Curtis Reinhardt officiating.
Friends may call until 9 tonight at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend.

Janet L. Holloway M.D. 1917-2002
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Janet L. Holloway, 84, died June 28 at Winter Haven Hospital. She was born July 9, 1917, the daughter of Joseph Henry and Nellie Dilling Holloway. She was a 1939 graduate of Friends University in Wichita and a 1941 graduate of the University of Kansas Medical School. A resident of Winter Haven, coming from Detroit, Mich., and Wichita, she was an anesthesiologist for 20 years at Hutzel and Harper Hospital in Detroit. Holloway was a member of the Catholic faith. Survivors include one nephew, Gene Holloway of Great Bend; and one great-nephew, Jay Holloway of Great Bend. Funeral arrangements were handled by Crisp-Coon Funeral Homes in Winter Haven. Joshua Evan Black 1981-2002
BAZINE - Joshua Evan Black, 20, died June 30 at Grisell Memorial Hospital in Ransom. He was born Dec. 19, 1981, at Ness City, the son of Bobby Black and Leona Oborny Black Benedict. A lifetime resident of Bazine, he was a student at Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland. Black was a member of Bazine Christian Fellowship. Survivors include his father of Bazine; his mother of Ness City; one brother, Preston Black of Tulsa, Okla.; and his grandparents, Barbara Black of Hoxie, and Leonard and Alice Oborny of Rush Center. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Vernon Black. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bazine Grade School Auditorium with the Rev. Stan Bryant officiating. Alice Marie Gerritzen, 79, of Great Bend, died June 30 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, in Wichita. She was born July 26, 1922, at Dorrance, the daughter of Henry J. and Charlotte E. Lilak Kepka. She was a graduate of Dorrance High School. She married
Anthony Gerritzen on Sept. 3, 1946, at Wilson. He died Jan. 13, 1988. A resident of Great Bend for 43 years, coming from Odin, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Gerritzen was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and St. Rose Altar Society, both of Great Bend. Survivors include one son, Edward A. Gerritzen of Williamsport, Pa.; two daughters, Patricia Hicks of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jeanette Marie Jackson of Boise, Idaho; two brothers, Raymond Kepka of Dorrance and Leonard Kepka of Great Bend; two sisters, Adeline Bechard of Grinnell and Betty Mattas of Wilson; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Kepka. St. Rose Altar Society Rosary will be at 3 today at Fryberger Mortuary in Great Bend. Margaret Herb on Nov. 25, 1951, at Hudson. A resident of Ellsworth since 1988, coming from Lorraine, he was a retired farmer. Wilkens was a member of First Baptist Church in Lorraine. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Jerry Wilkens of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Carol Miller of Overland Park and Connie Wilkens of Hutchinson; one brother, Harlan Wilkens of Hutchinson; one sister, Wilma Janssen of Scott City; two grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. Lawrence D. "Larry" Staab, 56, died July 1 at his residence in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 5, 1945, at Hays, the son of Seraphin and Isabelle Schmeidler Staab. He was a 1963 graduate of Stafford High School and a graduate of St. Rose School of X-Ray Technology in Great Bend. He married
Donna Sue Harrison on Nov. 20, 1965, at Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1963, coming from Stafford, he was an account representative for Health Science Division for Eastman Kodak of Rochester, N.Y., former chief of radiology at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend and office manager for Western Kansas Radiology LLC. Staab was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, both of Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Jeffrey S. Staab of Malibu, Calif., and Jeremy D. Staab of Lawrence; one daughter, Angela Staab Maddy of Ellinwood; his parents of Stafford; two brothers, Jerry Staab of Derby and Dean Staab of Pratt; one sister, Diana Pistole of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and two grandchildren. Jack D. Hearn on Oct. 22, 1945, at Belpre. He died June 1, 1994. A resident of St. John, she was a bookkeeper for English Oil Company. Mrs. Hearn was a member of First United Methodist Church, Martha Rebekah Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, Stafford County Country Club, Ida Long Goodman Memorial Library Board and Sunflower Senior Citizens, all of St. John. Survivors include two sons, Vance R. Hearn of Shell Knob, Mo., and Joe D. Hearn of St. John; one sister, Darlene Shrauner of Stafford; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, John McNutt; and four sisters, Beth Breitenbach, Ruth Chaney, Laverne Miles and Eva Ramey. LARNED - Edward E. Nauert, 77, died July 1 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned. He was born Feb. 25, 1925, at Larned, the son of John Peter and Edna Ruth Wood Nauert. He married
Betty Seibel on May 25, 1948, at Larned. A lifetime resident of Larned, he was a retired postal carrier. Nauert was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 3273, Veterans of Foreign Wars 7271 and American Legion 106, all of Larned. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; five daughters, Carol Mott of Pratt, Cathy Kuhn of Hays, Connie Lett of Phoenix, Ariz., Cherie Berndt of Denver, Colo., and Cristi Mourn of Colorado Springs, Colo.; four sisters, Grace Sloan of Larned, Ruth Wilson of Odessa, Texas, Dorothy Moyer and Helen Broadbooks, both of Wichita; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Nadine Deets Gilmore, Esther Rickert, Mary Riddle and infant sister, Margaret Nauert.
