BOTHELL, Wash. - Robert W. Johnson, 58, died June 3 at his residence in Bothell. He was born Feb. 24, 1944, at Pittsburg, the son of Melvin and Ruth Carlyon Johnson. He was a graduate of Pittsburg High School. He married
Cynda Walker on Feb. 6, 1993, at Council Grove. A resident of Bothell for four years, coming from Kansas City, he was a carpenter for a national construction company. Johnson was a member of Canyon Hills Community Church in Bothell. He was a U. S. Marine Corps veteran. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Walker Ray Johnson, Ody Wayne Johnson and Tristan Lee Johnson, all of the home; six daughters, Robin, Kristi, Bobbi, Buffi, Shannon and Kari; two brothers, Ed Johnson and Richard Johnson; one sister, D.J. Whaley; and 11 grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pawnee Rock cemetery in Pawnee Rock, with the Rev. John Grummon officiating. Fidelis Basgall 1907-2002
LA CROSSE - Fidelis Basgall, 94, died June 3 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born June 24, 1907, at Loretta, the son of John and Catherine Schoenfeld Basgall. He married
Rose Urban on Nov. 20, 1934, at Loretta. She died Sept. 21, 1995. A lifetime resident of Rush County, he was a retired auto mechanic. Basgall was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in La Crosse. Survivors include three sons, Leon Basgall and Kenny Basgall, both of La Crosse, and Larry Basgall of Larned; three daughters, Angela Basgall of La Crosse, Elvira Scheuerman and Sandra Dixon, both of Ellinwood; one brother, John Basgall of La Crosse; three sisters, JoAnn Schuckman of La Crosse, Florence Koerner of Hays and Frances Schuckman of Gorham; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by one son, Arvin Basgall; one daughter, Velma Rose Basgall; seven brothers, Sylvester Basgall, Jerome Basgall, Henry Basgall, Everett Basgall, Arthur Basgall, Clarence Basgall and Maurice Basgall; two sisters, Mary Urban and Helen Holzmeister; and one granddaughter, Melissa Dixon Greathouse. Rosary will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Benjamin Martin officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse City Cemetery. Edgar Theodore Preston 1918-2002
MACKSVILLE - Edgar Theodore Preston, 84, Macksville, passed away June 4 at Great Bend. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Methodist Church in Macksville with the Revs. David Upp and Carey Haner officiating. Burial will be at Farmington cemetery in Macksville. Visitation will be until 8 tonight at Minnis Chapel in Macksville. Memorials may be sent to the donor's choice in care of Minnis Mortuary in St. John or Alzheimer's Association c/o Sunflower Chapter, 347 S. Laura, Wichita, KS. 67211. Ed Preston was born Jan. 18, 1918, near Burdett. He was the son of Harold Glascow Preston and Lena May Barnes Preston. During his childhood years, he lived much of the time with his grandparents, Theodore and Nettie Barnes in Kinsley, and on a farm west of Macksville, where he graduated from high school in 1936. Following graduation he worked on several farms and also for the government Civilian Conservation Corps helping to build a rail line through the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. In 1939 he moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where he became a modification and assembly line foreman for Douglas Aircraft Co. of Santa Monica. On June 4, 1941, he married
Monica Irene DeBusk in Hutchinson. The couple lived in California until 1946 when they moved back to Macksville to go into farming and livestock production. They had four sons. He retired from farming in 1988. He was a 50-year member of Masonic Grand Lodge of A.F. & A.M. of Kansas. He served on the Macksville Christian Church Board, was a director of the Farmer's Co-op of Macksville and served as vice-president of the Stafford County Wheat Growers Association from 1977-1979. He served selflessly on the Farmington cemetery Board for 49 years, much of that time as its president. He became a member of the Grace Methodist Church in 1972. He married
E. Irene Fenwick Lightle on Nov. 23, 1972. She survives. Other survivors include his sons: Dr. Richard C. Preston and wife, Marilyn, of Great Bend, David J. Preston and wife, Karen, of Lee's Summit, Mo., Michael K. Preston and wife, Teresa, of Hutchinson, and Dr. Kevin L. Preston and wife, Terry, of Sioux City, Iowa; step-sons, Larry D. Fenwick and wife, Lyn, of Aledo, Texas, and Kenneth C. Fenwick and wife, Beverly, of Larned; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; nephew Tom Tucker and wife, Marilyn, of Houston, Texas, and six other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant brother; his mother; his sister, Doris Preston Tucker; his father; and Monica DeBusk Preston. June 5, 2002
Mirl Qualls 1930-2002
HOLYROOD - Mirl Qualls, 71, died June 1 in rural Ellsworth County. He was born Aug. 5, 1930, at New Madrid County, Mo., the son of Arthur and Zetta Coleman Qualls. A resident of Holyrood, coming from Claflin, he was owner of Qualls Construction and a retired depot agent for Missouri-Pacific Railway. Qualls was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include one son, Richard Qualls of Wichita; two daughters, Pamella Morrisey of Castlerock, Colo., and Deborah Tidd of Lyndon; four brothers, Raymond Qualls of Orlando, Fla., James Qualls of Lincoln Park, Mich., Ira Qualls of Las Vegas, Nev., and Luther Qualls of Doniphan, Mo.; five sisters, Florence Hutchison of Heber Springs, Ark., Mary Holder of Monroe, Ga., Melba Graham of Colorado Springs, Colo., Francis Brashear and Mildred Burns, both of Sikeston, Mo.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Lee Qualls. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Parsons Funeral Home in Ellsworth with the Rev. Mary Lou Klein officiating. There will be a private family burial. The body was cremated and there is no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Holyrood American Legion, in care of the funeral home. June 4. 2002
Vivian Hamett 1917-2002
LYONS - Vivian Hamett, 85, died June 3 at her home in Lyons. She was born May 3, 1917, at Pawnee, Okla., the daughter of Hiram and Beulah McMahon Hicks. She married
Jack Worley in 1940. He preceded her in death. She married
Buford Hamett in 1967. A resident of Rice County for 40 years, she was a homemaker. Survivors include two sons, Dennis Worley of Wichita and Courtney Worley of Hurst, Texas; one daughter, Tonya Worl of Geneso; one sister, Wanda "Boots" Yeisly of Oklahoma City, Okla.; 7 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Geneseo cemetery with the Rev. Robert Fleenor officiating. There is no visitation. No memorials are suggested. Charlotte T. 'Lottie' Riedel 1906-2002
Charlotte T. "Lottie" Riedel, 96, died June 3 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 4, 1906, in Barton County, the daughter of Joseph and Theresia Kober Schneider. She married
Edward A. Riedel on May 8, 1928, at Olmitz. He died Oct. 24, 1958. A lifetime area resident, living at Alterra Sterling House for seven years, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Riedel was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church of Olmitz, St. Ann's Altar Society, Daughters of Isabella Circle No. 744, auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary and was Sacristan of St. Ann's Parish for 28 years. Survivors include three daughters, Mary Jo Schenk of Great Bend, Marcella Maneth of Olmitz and Carol A. Thomas of West Chester, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Joseph Schneider, Bernard Schneider, Leonard Schneider and Ervin Schneider; two sisters, Mary Bahr and Frances Bahr; and one granddaughter, Geralyn Schenk. Vigil service will be at 7 tonight, followed by Daughters of Isabella rosary, at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Revs. Ultan Murphy and Joseph Bahr officiating. Burial will be at St. Ann's cemetery in Olmitz. LARNED - Dean D. Dirks, 77, died June 1 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned. He was born June 5, 1924, at Larned, the son of Elmer and Alyce Nelson Dirks. He married
Dorrace Jantz June 9, 1946, at Larned. A longtime resident of Pawnee County, he was a farmer. Dirks was a member of First United Methodist Church, ASCS and American Legion, all of Larned; Sanford Co-op board, and Sanford School board. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Carol Vrooman of Tulsa, Okla., and Judy Cole of Mission; one brother, Bruce Dirks of Larned; and two grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned with the Rev. Charles Grant officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Lewis Gilbert Thomas 1921-2002
JETMORE - Lewis Gilbert Thomas, 81, died May 31 at Hodgeman County Long Term Care Center in Jetmore. He was born May 16, 1921, at Hill City, the son of Sam and Edith Davidson Thomas. He married
Lucille B. Rynerson on July 31, 1942, at Jetmore. She died June 29, 2001. A longtime area resident, he was a custom cutter. Thomas was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include one son, Doug Thomas of Hanston; two sisters, Louise Ambrosier of Hanston and Juanita Repshire of Russell Springs; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Slim Thomas and John Thomas. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Jetmore with the Rev. Mitch Reece officiating. Leland Eugene Hillman on Jan. 11, 1957. He died Aug. 31, 1963. A resident of Russell, coming from Zurich and Linden, Neb., she was a cook, nurse aide and receptionist. Mrs. Hillman was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Russell. Survivors include one son, Leland Hillman of Salina; two brothers, Curtis Camp of Modesto, Calif., and Rowan Camp of Russell; and one grandchild. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Plainville cemetery with the Rev. Carl Haggard officiating. Huey P. 'Jinx' Whitman 1931-2002
NEKOMA - Huey P. "Jinx" Whitman, 71, died May 30 at his residence in Nekoma. He was born May 24, 1931, at Choudrant, La., the son of Idus and Mary Lee Green Whitman. He married
Bonnie Mae Summers on June 14, 1974, at Coppell, Texas. A resident of Nekoma for nine months, coming from Elko, Nev., he was a retired maintenance superintendent in the mining business. Whitman was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served in the Korean War, with the 94th Platoon, 2nd Battalion. He was awarded two purple hearts, a U.N. medal and a Good Conduct medal. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Huey P. Whitman Jr. of Elkhart, Ind., and Allen R. Whitman of Lewisville, Texas; two daughters, Peggy A. Lively of Torrington, Conn., and Mary Ruth Hamden of Shreveport, La.; two stepsons, Jay Cupp of Leadville, Colo., and Todd Cupp of Coos Bay, Ore.; two stepdaughters, Pam Sanford of Douglas, Wyo., and Kam Wilson of Rickman, Tenn.; one brother, Allen L. Whitman of Eros, La.; one sister, Ruth Avery of Austin, Texas; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild He was preceded in death by one son, George I. Whitman; two brothers, W.H. Elke Chastain, Dec. 13, 1969, at Hoisington. A resident of Great Bend for most of his life, he was a mechanic and mechanical supervisor at Great Bend Packing in Great Bend. Andrasek was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Eagle Lodge 646, both of Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Carl Andrasek, Joe Andrasek and Travis Andrasek, all of Great Bend; one daughter, Shelly Dalton of Great Bend; two brothers, Louis Andrasek of Garden City and Bobby Andrasek of Fort Collins, Colo.; two sisters, Mildred Peter of Fort Collins, and Marie Cofer of Ransom; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Andrasek; and two sisters, Anna Griffith and Rosie Engle. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev.
