LARNED - Ray Pinkerton Jr., 66, died June 5 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born April 26, 1936, at Kingman, the son of Ray Sr. and Iona Stucky Pinkerton. A resident of Larned since 2000, coming from Haviland, he was a retired farm laborer. Pinkerton was a member of the Baptist Church and Saddle and Ropers Club of Kingman. Survivors include one son, Randall Pinkerton, Spokane, WA; two daughters, Robin Pinkerton of Larned and Ronda Scheuerman of Pawnee Rock; his mother of Kingman; two brothers, Jerry Pinkerton of Pratt and Larry Pinkerton of Kingman; one sister, Margaret Harbert of Kingman; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Livingston Funeral Home in Kingman. Burial will be in the Walnut Hill Cemetery. Friends may call until 5 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Kingman First Baptist Church, in care of the funeral home. June 9, 2002

Wilma Darlene Sauer Fox 1932-2002
ELLIS - Wilma Darlene Sauer Fox, 70, died June 5 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. She was born April 10, 1932, in Trego County, the daughter of Joseph and Carolina Wagg Sauer. She married Jackie J. Fox on Nov. 24, 1956, in Great Bend. A resident of Ellis, she was a bookkeeper. Mrs. Fox was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis, teaching Sunday school for many years. Survivors include her husband of the home; two daughters, Linda Pfeifer and Debra Hazen, both of Ellis; one brother, Ernest R. Sauer of Ellis; one sister, Eleanor Grout of Winterset, Iowa; and four grandchildren. Prayer service will be at 7 tonight at the church. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Lyle M. Knuth officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope cemetery in Ellis. Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. today at Wasinger Funeral Chapel in Ellis and from 6:30-8 tonight at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral chapel. June 9, 2002

Harley Benjamin Appel 1936-2002
LARNED - Harley Benjamin Appel, 66, died June 6 at his home in rural Larned. He was born Feb. 26, 1936, at rural Albert, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Edna G. Behrens Appel. He married Suzanne Marie Osborne on Aug. 1, 1974, at Marysville. A resident of rural Larned since 2000, coming from Marysville, he was the chief executive officer for Community Memorial Hospital in Marysville for 26 years, hospital administrator at Kinsley Hospital for 14 years and Minneola Hospital for eight years. Appel was a member of Peace Lutheran Church at Albert and Kansas Hospital Association. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Steven Appel of Larned and Kenton Appel of Hutchinson; five daughters, Terri Lewis and Kelli Appel, both of Hutchinson, Sherri Baugh of Mesa, Ariz., Jill Karleen and Jodi Oneil, both of Beattie; two brothers, Ben Appel Jr. of Larned and Robert Appel of Orange, Texas; two sisters, Bonnie Larkin of Greensburg and Shirley Stephens of Mount Hope; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth George Herman Appel. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Charles Ledin officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. Memorials are suggested to Kansas Hospital Education and Research Foundation, in care of the funeral home. June 9, 2002

James 'Jim' L. Blackwell 1935-2002
LARNED - James "Jim" L. Blackwell, 66, died June 7 at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Larned. He was born Nov. 11, 1935, the son of George and Ruth Parker Blackwell. A longtime area resident, he was a restaurant manager. Survivors include one son, James G. Blackwell of Hoisington; and seven grandchildren. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned, with the Rev. Dan Lundgren officiating. Burial will be at Garfield cemetery in Garfield. Friends may call until 8 tonight at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to donor's choice, in care of the mortuary. June 9, 2002

Elsie O. Panning 1909-2002
ELLINWOOD - Elsie O. Panning, 92, died June 7 at Ellinwood District Hospital Long Term Care in Ellinwood. She was born Oct. 26, 1909, at Claflin, the daughter of Henry William and Emma Katherine Steineke Bortz. She married Alfred G. Panning on June 1, 1929, at Ellinwood. He died Sept. 18, 1976. A lifetime resident of Barton County, she was a housewife. Mrs. Panning was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, LWML and Grove Park Golf Club and Bridge Clubs, all of Ellinwood. Survivors include one son, Larry Panning of Ellinwood; one sister, Laura Rugan of Ellinwood; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Andy Keltner officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Memorials are suggested to St. John's Remodeling Project, in care of the funeral home. June 9, 2002

Elsie E. Riley 1909-2002
HOISINGTON- Elsie E. Riley, 92, died June 7 at Integrated Health Services of Great Bend. She was born Aug. 13, 1909, at Russell County, the daughter of Henry and Joanna Maier Schwein. She married Mitch Riley April 13, 1951, at Raton, New Mexico. He died April 28, 1982. A longtime Hoisington resident, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Riley was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, both of Hoisington. Survivors include one brother, Herman Schwein of Macksville; and one sister, Thelma Hagner of Wichita. She was preceded in death by seven brothers, Emanuel Schwein, Jake Schwein, Emil Schwein, Leo Schwein, Raymond Schwein, Paul Schwein, and Leroy Schwein. Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Kelly Taylor-Schaus officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington cemetery in Hoisington. Friends may call from 3-9 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday all at the funeral home, and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Great Bend Humane Society, both in care of the funeral home. June 9, 2002

Eleanor F. Cole 1915-2002
Eleanor F. Cole, 87, of Great Bend, died June 5 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Feb. 15, 1915, at Girard, the daughter of Samuel Gilbert and Martha Jane Hennessy Kennedy. She married Reland A. Cole Sr. on March 14, 1937, at Great Bend. He died Jan. 30, 1994. A lifetime resident of Barton County, she was employed by Bayless Cleaners and was a machine operator for Fuller Brush until her retirement. Mrs. Cole was a member of Eagle's Lodge. She lived a long productive life. She always put everyone else's needs before her own. She loved music and playing her organ and piano. She loved telling stories of her childhood days and attended every family reunion that she could. She loved tending her vegetable garden and made the best fried chicken ever. She enjoyed life to its fullest and especially enjoyed her family. She was always hardworking, never had idle hands and her laughter was a joy to all. She will be greatly missed. Survivors include three sons, Leland D. Cole and wife Mary C. of Akron, Ohio, Stephen D. Cole and wife Judy J. of Dallas, Texas, and Reland A. Cole of Great Bend; one brother, Allan Kennedy of Longmont, Colo.; one sister, Florence Revel of Longmont; and three grandchildren, Michael Lee Cole and wife Allison of Ohio, Alicia Denise Cole of New York, and Ashley Elizabeth Cole of Texas. She was preceded in death by one brother, Chester Kennedy; and four sisters, Hilda Kennedy, Irma Shackley, Gladys Green and Martha Jane Sharp. Funeral was held on Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend with the Rev. Hal Staats officiating. Burial was at Springdale cemetery in Chase. Memorials are suggested to donor's choice, in care of the Fryberger Mortuary in Great Bend. June 7, 2002

Harvey Cenek Sekavec 1921-2002
BROWNELL - Harvey Cenek Sekavec, 80, died June 6 at his residence in Brownell. He was born Nov. 13, 1921, at Brownell, the son of Cenek and Marie Malir Sekavec. He married Dorothy Ehrlic, July 10, 1943, at Bazine. A lifetime resident of Brownell, he was a farmer and cattleman. Sekavec was a member of St. Paul Congregational Church and American Legion Olin Cole Post 392, both of Bazine, and Ransom Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; four sons, Dale Sekavec of Hoxie, Ron Sekavec of Ness City, Marvin Sekavec of Brownell and Gerald Sekavec of Hays; one brother, Marion Sekavec of Brownell; one sister, Irene Stull of Ransom; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Gordon Sekavec, Steve Sekavec, Edison Sekavec, Archie Sekavec and George Sekavec. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Sam Flick officiating. Burial will be at Bazine Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City, with the family will receive friends from 7:30-9 tonight. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home. June 7, 2002

Celesta Schartz Bennett
HURST, Texas - Celesta Schartz Bennett, 69, died May 26 at her residence in Hurst. She was the daughter of Nick and Aileen Schartz. She married Virgil Bennett. A resident of Hurst, coming from Great Bend and Ellinwood, she was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Gary Bennett of Amarillo, Texas; two daughters, Sharon Bigham and Susan Bennett, both of Fort Worth, Texas; seven brothers, Kenneth Schartz of Sacramento, Calif., Vernon Schartz of Grants Pass, Ore., Norbert Schartz of Sutter Creek, Calif., Gerald Schartz of Hays, Loren Schartz of Great Bend, Tom Schartz of Phoenix, Ariz., and Patrick Schartz of Ellinwood; two sisters, DeSales Feist and Mary Bowes, both of Ellinwood; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Schartz and Leon Schartz. Funeral was held at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Fort Worth. Burial was at Mount Olivet cemetery in Fort Worth. Mount Olivet Funeral Home of Fort Worth was in charge of arrangements. June 7, 2002

Benton Brown 1914-2002
STAFFORD - Benton Brown, 87, died June 5 at Leisure Homestead in Stafford. He was born Oct. 11, 1914, at Dennison, Texas, the son of Charles and Eva May Rundell Brown. He married Mary Pearl Suedekum on Dec. 6, 1936, at Stafford. She died May 4, 1990. A longtime resident of Stafford, he was employed by Minneapolis Moline for 31 years. Brown was a member of First Baptist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars, both of Stafford. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving as a staff sargent in the South Pacific. Survivors include one son, Alan Ray Brown of Peoria, Ill.; two daughters, Edna May Wood of Caldwell, Idaho, and Patricia Ann McCaleb of Hutchinson; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford with the Rev. Guy Elliott officiating. Burial will be at Stafford Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 tonight at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to Leisure Homestead, in care of the chapel. June 7, 2002

Willard Ray Dickson 1922-2002
STAFFORD - Willard Ray Dickson, 79, died June 4 at his home in Stafford. He was born July 22, 1922, at Stafford, the son of James Victor and Lora E. Dunn Dickson. He was a 1942 graduate of Stafford High School. He married Alice Oneta Combs on Dec. 28, 1947. A lifetime resident of Stafford, he was a farmer. Dickson was a member of Friends Church and First Christian Church, both of Stafford. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the Army Tank Battalion. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Rodney Dickson, Jaye Dickson and Edwin Dickson, all of Stafford; one daughter, Alice Juline Pettijohn of Stafford; one brother, Wayne Dickson of Stafford; three sisters, Lora Mae Hargett of Ventura, Calif., Mildred Webring of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Mary O'Brien of Lewis; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Edgar Dickson, Herman Dickson and infant Charles Dickson. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford with the Rev. Karen Ault officiating. Burial will be at Stafford Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-8 tonight at the chapel. Memorials are suggested to Southwind Hospice, in care of the chapel. June 6, 2002

Sandra Sue Cuzick 1955-2002
Sandra Sue Cuzick, 47, of Great Bend, died June 4. She was born June 4, 1955, in Great Bend, the daughter of Joseph Clair and Wilma Jean Yetschke Cuzick. A resident of Great Bend, she was a machine operator at Fuller Brush. Survivors include her mother of Great Bend; and one brother, Stan Cuzick of Great Bend. No services will be held. No memorials are suggested. Arrangements are in care of Cochran Mortuary in Wichita. June 6, 2002
