Arthur R. Hickel 1919-2002
ELLINWOOD - Arthur R. Hickel, 83, died June 17 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born March 9, 1919, at Ellinwood, the son of Louis and Katherine Robl Hickel. He married
Anna Margaret Considine on April 6, 1953, in Ellinwood. A lifetime resident of Ellinwood, he was a farmer, finish carpenter, cabinet maker, and owner and operator of Ellinwood Packing Plant until his retirement in 1974. Hickel was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, funeral usher, Knights of Columbus 1187, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Third Degree past Grand Knight and former District Deputy, all of Ellinwood. He was also Fourth Degree Coronado Assembly and former Ellinwood city councilman. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II as a 52nd Armored Infantry Battalion tech sargeant in the European Theatre at the Battle of the Bulge, receiving a Purple Heart. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Michael Hickel of Salina and Dennis Hickel of Great Bend; one daughter, Patricia Blair of Great Bend; one brother, Joe Hickel of Ellinwood; one sister, Dorothy Christoph of Lenexa; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, George Hickel and Martin Hickel; and three sisters, Louise Doll, Lavonne Graves and Helen Zink. Altar Society rosary will be at 3 today at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood. Rosary will be at 7 tonight, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary, all at the funeral home. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Revs. James Roth and Gerald Hammeke officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche cemetery in Ellinwood. Paul E. Harris 1943-2002
LARNED - Paul E. Harris, 58, died June 18 at his residence in Larned. He was born Sept. 26, 1943, at Omaha, Neb., the son of John T. III and Eleanor L. Suess Harris. He married
Ileta Kay Dougherty on June 24, 1973, at Plainville. A resident of Larned since 1969, coming from McCook, Neb., he was a retired registered nurse after working at Larned State Hospital for 28 years. Harris was a member of First Congregational Church and Ft. Larned Arms Inc., both of Larned. He was also a member of National Rifle Association and American Bowling Congress. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, John Paul Harris of Hays; two daughters, Xan Harris of Larned and Leah Beckwith of Bedford, Texas; six brothers, J.T. Harris, Bill Harris, Bert Harris and Jim Harris, all of Lincoln, Neb., Bob Harris of Alabama and Lynn Huenefeld of Hanston; and four honorary grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Southern Baptist Church in Larned with the Rev. Ron Day officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Frederick G. Kaiser Jr. 1955-2002
KANSAS CITY - Frederick G. Kaiser Jr., 47, died June 15 at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo. He was born Feb. 2, 1955, at Great Bend, the son of Frederick G. Sr. and Elizabeth Hoeffner Kaiser. A longtime resident of Kansas City, coming from Hoisington, he was a mechanic for National Lease. Kaiser was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Kansas City. Survivors include his mother of Kansas City; one brother, John Kaiser of Mission; and three sisters, Frances Adams, Dolores Kaiser and Helen Perkins, all of Kansas City. Rosary will be at 7 tonight at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Pascal Klein officiating. Peter 'Doc' E. Gory 1919-2002
CARTHAGE, Mo. - Peter "Doc" E. Gory, 83, died June 16. He was born April 9, 1919, at Hoisington, the son of William Henry and Bridget Ellen Hogan Gory. He was a 1936 graduate of Hoisington High School and a 1943 graduate of Kansas State University, with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. He married
Mary Jane Trester on Aug. 3, 1939, at Great Bend. She died March 11, 1984. A resident of Carthage, Mo., since 1953, coming from Nebraska, Illinois and Kansas, he was owner and operator of Lakeview Veterinary Clinic, located near Carthage, until his retirement in 1993. Gory was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Carthage and Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served with the 2nd Calvary regiment in North Africa and 10th Mountain Division in the North Apennines Mountains in Italy. Survivors include four sons, Gary L. Gory of Carthage, William J. Gory of Reeds, Mo., Michael L. Gory and Patrick E. Gory, both of Joplin, Mo.; one daughter, Melissa J. Zimmerman of Joplin; one sister, Margie Ellen Morrow of Peoria, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one infant sister, Mary Gory. Patricia L. Slattery 1946-2002
DODGE CITY - Patricia L. Slattery, 55, died June 16 at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City. She was born Nov. 10, 1946, at Great Bend, the daughter of Martin S. and Mathilda Demel Schneider. She was a graduate of the nursing program at Dodge City Community College. She married
Alvin F. Slattery on Aug. 17, 1968, at Olmitz. A resident of Dodge City since 1964, coming from Olmitz, she was a licensed practical nurse at the former St. Anthony Hospital in Dodge City and a homemaker. Mrs. Slattery was a member of Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, treasurer of Coronado Car Club, and former member of Sacred Heart Cathedral and Altar Society, all of Dodge City. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Ray Slattery and Don Slattery, both of Dodge City; one brother, Larry Schneider of Olmitz; and two granddaughters. Rose Tomrdle 1914-2002
HAYS - Rose Tomrdle, 87, died June 16 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. She was born Oct. 29, 1914, at Fairport, the daughter of Charles and Victoria Belle Altman. She was a 1932 graduate of Sharon Springs High School. She married
Richard Tomrdle on March 14, 1943, at Hays. He died in 1976. A resident of Hays, she was the owner and operator of a beautician shop. Mrs. Tomrdle was a member of First Baptist Church in Hays. Survivors include one daughter, Susan Kay Tomrdle of Hays. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Larry Ray Schriner 1944-2002
LARNED - Larry Ray Schriner, 57, died June 14 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born Oct. 23, 1944, at Russell, the son of Lawrence and Esther F. Wagner Schriner. A resident of Larned since 1987, coming from Hoisington, he was an auto body technician for Ron's Auto Body Shop in Larned. Schriner was a member of Assembly of God Church in Larned. Survivors include two sons, Mickey and Dean; and one daughter, Tammie; one sister, Marlene Oyler of Medicine Lodge; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by one sister, Shirley Schriner. Mark Raymond Emerson 1953-2002
Mark Raymond Emerson, 48, of Great Bend, died June 15 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. He was born Dec. 20, 1953, at Great Bend, the son of Luther Raymond and Margie R. Vance Emerson. He was a 1971 graduate of Great Bend High School, a 1973 graduate of Barton County Community College and a 1975 graduate of Pittsburg State University. He married
Sarah Guardia on July 7, 1975, at Pittsburg. A longtime resident of Great Bend, coming from Colorado and Oklahoma, he was a sports editor for Broken Arrow Ledger newspaper in Oklahoma from 1980-1988. Emerson was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Great Bend, where he served as financial secretary and vestry. He was also a member of Elk's Lodge, National Champions Argonne Rebels Drum and Bugle Corps, former treasurer for the Barton County Democrats and was a notary public. Survivors include two daughters, Andrea Carter Emerson and Elizabeth Ann Emerson, both of Great Bend; his mother of Great Bend; two brothers, Max R. Emerson of Great Bend and Mitchell R. Emerson of Overland Park. Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Kevin Schmidt officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. RUSSELL - Melvin R. Garrett, 73, died June 15 at Salina Regional Medical Center in Salina. He was born March 21, 1929, at Dorrance, the son of Adam Joseph and Chloie Marie Essig Garrett. He married
Eunice M. Claussen on May 31, 1953, at Dorrance. A resident of Russell since the 1950s, coming from Dorrance, he was owner and operator of a building construction business for many years. Garrett was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Shrine Club, all of Russell. He was also a member if ISIS Shrine and consistory in Salina. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Ronald D. Garrett of Quakertown, Pa.; one daughter, Bonnie K. Neal of Russell; one sister, Vivian Betts of Russell; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one infant son; and one brother, Duane Garrett. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church with the Revs. Henry Hartman and Harlan Kaden officiating. Burial will be at Dorrance City Cemetery. Mayme Marie Jumper 1909-2002
LA CROSSE - Mayme Marie Jumper, 92, died June 12, at Rush County Memorial Hospital in La Crosse. She was born Dec. 1, 1909, near Lake Andes, S.D., the daughter of Theodore and Paulina Buchholz. She married
Merle Flemming Jumper, June 1941. He died April 1947. A resident of La Crosse since May 2001, coming from Chanute, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Jumper was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist, in Mitchell, S.D. Survivors include one son, Merle Edward Jumper of Rush Center; one step-son Kenneth Jumper of Portland, Ore.; one sister, Dorothy Sorenson of Souix Falls, S.D.; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, five sisters, and three grandsons. Memorial service will be held at a later date in South Dakota. There is no visitation, cremation has taken place. Dr. Jack D. Bronson 1935-2002
Dr. Jack D. Bronson, 66, of Great Bend, died June 14, at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. He was born July 7, 1935, at Fredonia, the son of Louie W. and Ruth J. Dodge Bronson. He was a graduate of Independence Junior College, Pittsburg State University, Emporia State University, and received his Ph.D. from St. Louis University. He married
Dorothy Dean Vahrenberg, Aug. 13, 1961, at New Franklin, Mo. A resident of Great Bend, he was a principal for schools in Overbrook, Emporia, Nickerson-South Hutchinson, Haysville, and Great Bend; Director of Secondary Education at Hillsboro, Mo.; and Superintendent of schools in Hoisington before retiring after 34 years. Bronson was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend, WBCCI Airstream Club, Masonic Lodge in Fredonia, and the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, DeAnn Jenkins and Kyla Tibbetts both of Wichita, and Rhonda Slava of Overland Park; one sister, Jill Cott of San Antonio, Texas, and three grandchildren. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church in Great Bend, with the Rev. Hal Staats officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at The Walnut Grove Cemetery, in Boonville, Mo. Elois Coreen McBride Tidwell 1916-2002
Elois Coreen McBride Tidwell, 85, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at Hutchinson Hospital, at Hutchinson. She was born in Shamrock, Okla., Nov. 23, 1916, the daughter of Alva J. and Stella Viola Owensby McBride. She lived all her early life in the Shamrock community, graduating from High School there in 1934. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church, Macksville, where she was a Sunday School Teacher for over 15 years. She also belonged to the V.I.P. Center of Macksville. She was a homemaker and also the owner and operator of the This N' That craft shop in Macksville since 1972. On Sept. 14, 1935 she married
Van Tidwell of Commanche, Okla. at Drumright, Okla. He died Oct. 4, 1985. Survivors include one daughter, Carol Stambaugh of Hutchinson; two grandchildren, Susan Baxter Bean of Great Bend, and Steve Stambaugh of Wichita; one sister, Alma Ott of Spearman Texas; and five great grandchildren, Taasha, Stasha, and Marisha Richter, and Annaleesha and Addison Baxter. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church in Macksville, with the Revs. Harold Wilcox, and Larry Popovich officiating. Burial will be at Farmington cemetery in Macksville. HOISINGTON - Helen D. Menzer, 77, died June 13 at her residence in Hoisington. She was born Aug. 30, 1924, at Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Archie and Ida MacDonald Cockrell. She married
Edwin Menzer Dec. 8, 1945, at Olmitz. He died July 2, 1984. A resident of Hoisington for 14 years, coming from Olmitz, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Menzer was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Olmitz. Survivors include seven sons, Alan "Buck" Menzer and Paul E. Menzer, both of Cherryvale, Edwin B. Menzer and Ronald L. Menzer, both of Hoisington, David M. Menzer of Independence, John P. Menzer of Claflin and Michael "Pinky" Menzer of Great Bend; four daughters, Yvonne West of Great Bend, Ann Marie Wiley of Biglow, Ark., Dorothy Goodman of Jonesboro, Ark., and Susan G. McLearen of Hoisington; one brother, Donald Cockrell of Idaho; one sister, Betty Brack of Colorado; 25 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Memorial service will be held at a later date.
