HUTCHINSON - The Rev. Galen W. Unruh, 85, died May 13 at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. He was born Nov. 13, 1916, at Pawnee Rock, the son of Benjamin C. and Susan Pauline Unruh. He married
Doris Elizabeth Nairn on Aug. 31, 1934, at Lyons. She died July 16, 2001. A resident of Hutchinson since 1981, coming from Pawnee Rock, he was a retired clergyman of New Jerusalem Church in Pawnee Rock. Unruh was a member of New Jerusalem Church, a charter member of Pawnee Rock Lions Club, past mayor of Pawnee Rock and a member of Rosicrucian Order. Survivors include two sons, Stephen Unruh of Hutchinson and Stanley Unruh of San Antonio, Texas; three daughters, Janice Beougher of Kingman, Carole Bowman of Pawnee Rock and Sharon Billings of Milford, Ohio; one brother, Virgil A. Unruh of Garland, Texas; 18 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Geneva Douglas. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend with the Revs. John Billings, Renee Billings-Machinak and Kit Billings officiating. Burial will be at Pawnee Rock Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday, all at the funeral home. Harold Gordon Leeburg 1922-2002
MILLER - Harold Gordon Leeburg, 79, died May 9 at Newman Memorial Hospital in Emporia. He was born Nov. 13, 1922, at Miller, the son of Victor Albin and Edna Holmberg Leeburg. He was a 1940 graduate of Miller High School. He married
Helen Louise Lyon on April 16, 1950, at Osage City. A lifetime resident of the Miller community, he was a farmer and cattleman. Leeburg was a member of Miller United Methodist Church, served on the church board, the Miller School Board, Miller 4-H as a beef leader and was auctioneer for the United Methodist Women Bazaar for several years. Survivors include his wife of the home; three daughters, Janice Marie Reinhardt of Bison, Jane Ellen Lashbrook of Bonner Springs and Jill Lynn Megredy of Winfield; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Joyce Louise Leeburg on Aug. 6, 1960. Funeral services were May 13. Burial was at Osage City Cemetery. Ellen Marjorie Smith 1920-2002
SEWARD - Ellen Marjorie Smith, 81, died May 12 at her residence in Seward. She was born June 11, 1920, at Radium, the daughter of William Lawrence and Elsie Fern Carr Smith. A resident of Seward, she was a hospital medical records secretary. She was a member of St. Mary Episcopal Church in Larned. Survivors include one son, Robert Kent Schulz of Tulsa, Okla.; two daughters, Kay Ellen Schulz-Foss of Rowlett, Texas, and Anne-Marie Hartory of Garland, Texas; one stepson, Michael Brannan of Venice, Calif.; one brother, William Lawrence Smith Jr. of McKinney, Texas; one sister, Caroline Anne Ives of St. John; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Funeral service was today at St. John Episcopal Church in Great Bend. Inurnment was at Eden Valley Cemetery. Harry Horyna 1918-2002
TIMKEN - Harry Horyna, 84, died May 12 at Rush County Nursing Home in La Crosse. He was born March 13, 1918, at Timken, the son of Frank Sr. and Grace R. Stejskal Horyna. He married
Viola Schwindt on July 10, 1943, at Hays. A lifetime resident of Rush and Hodgeman counties, he was a farmer and custodian for Bison School District. Horyna was a member of United Methodist Church in Bison, Western Fraternal Life Association and Bison-Timken Men's Club. Survivors include his wife of the home; four daughters, Joyce Harting of Derby, Novia Mays of Edmond, Okla., Jonea Hartshorn of Timken and Neysa Ummel of Topeka; and nine grandchildren. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Revs. Kathy Bannister and Dr. Arlyn Thielenhaus officiating. Inurnment will be at Bohemian National cemetery in Timken. Clarence Cunningham 1913-2002
PRATT - Clarence Cunningham, 89, died May 14, at Pratt Regional Medical Center in Pratt. He was born Feb. 24, 1913, at Belpre, the son of Lacy W. And Laura Hanzlick Cunningham. He married
Vera Imogene Mullen on June 23, 1940, at La Crosse. She died May 24, 1988. A lifetime resident of Rush County, he was the Rush County Engineer for 42 years, retiring in 1978. Cunningham was a member of United Methodist Church in La Crosse, charter member of La Crosse Lions Club, council member of Boy Scouts, and also a member of National Republican Committee and Kansas State Board of Technical Profession as an engineer and surveyor. Survivors include one son, Glen Cunningham of Pratt; one daughter, Karen Legleiter of Arkansas City; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Laura Cunningham-Heit; five brothers, Orval Cunningham, Lacy Cunningham, George Cunningham, Charlie Cunningham and Alvie Cunningham; and one sister, Juanita Shoemaker. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church with the Revs. Kathy Bannister and Thomas D. Sutter officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse City Cemetery. CLEARWATER - Lorene Miller, 85, died May 13 in Clearwater. She was born May 21, 1916, at Mannford, Okla., the daughter of William and Marie Minda Suit Whittle. She married
Clarence Miller. He preceded her in death. She was a homemaker. Survivors include three sons, Harold Miller of Ellinwood, and Ronald Miller and Charles Miller, both of Haysville; two daughters, Peggy McGee and Carolyn Engelbrecht, both of Wichita; one brother, Bobby Whittle of Wichita; two sisters, Bethel McIntosh of Phoenix, Ariz., and Opal Richardson of Wichita; 22 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Cathy Ann Miller; one granddaughter, Christina Maus; and three brothers, Frank Whittle, Doris Whittle and Junior Whittle. DODGE CITY - Irene Pfannenstiel, 73, died May 11 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus in Wichita. She was born Dec. 25, 1928, at Ness City, the daughter of Joseph and Rosa Pfannenstiel Graf. She married
Elmer Pfannenstiel May 24, 1949, at Ness City. He died Dec. 4, 1991. A resident of Dodge City since 1946, coming from Ness City, she was a bookkeeper for Kustom Auto Radio and many other businesses in Dodge City. Mrs. Pfannenstiel was a member of Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Daughters of Isabella, both of Dodge City. Survivors include one brother, Edwin Graf of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by eight brothers, Isidor Graf, Rudolph Graf, Constantine Graf, Gregory Graf, Peter Graf, Alexander Graf, Alban Graf and Aloysius Graf; and two sisters, Roberta Graf and Catherine Brown. Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 4 p.m. today and vigil service will be at 7:30 tonight, both at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel in Dodge City. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. John J. Maes officiating. Burial will be at Maple Grove cemetery in Dodge City. Mrs. Schroeder was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ and the women's guild, both of Holyrood. HEALEY - Victor E. Penka, 80, died May 11 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born Sept. 1, 1921, in Barton County, the son of W.W. and Anne C. Meyers Penka. He married
Eleanor Birzer May 22, 1946, at St. Peter and Paul Church north of Ellinwood. He attended a welding school in Lincoln, Neb. A resident of Lane County since 1947, he was a farmer and stockman. Penka was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Dighton, 3rd Degree of Knights of Columbus Council 3210, Bishop Forest 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, life member, longtime director and past vice-president of Kansas Czechs Inc. and Midwestern Polka Club of Kansas. He was U.S. Army veteran, serving in the 5th Army in Africa and Italy during World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; four sons, Larry Penka of Garden City, Eugene Penka of Healy and William Penka and Terry Penka, both of Dighton; two daughters, Vicki Menzer of Silver City, N.M., and Eloise Doran of St. John; 22 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Penka and Clem Penka; and one grandson, Nicholas Menzer. Funeral was today at the church with the Rev. Francis Khoi Nguyen officiating. Burial was at Dighton Memorial cemetery with military graveside rites by American Legion Post 190 of Dighton. LARNED - Thelma C. Irion, 86, died May 11 at her home in Larned. She was born July 21, 1915, at Larned, the daughter of Allen C. and Vena Easley Palmer. She married
William M. Irion July 20, 1939, at Larned. He died April 2, 1971. A lifetime resident of Larned, she taught third and fourth grade at the elementary school in Garfield for more than 50 years. Mrs. Irion was a member of First Christian Church, Christian Womens Fellowship, Walnut Extension Unit and past member of Li Ar Mu Club, all of Larned. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and the American Association of University Women. Survivors include one sister, Doris Sapp of Larned. Funeral service will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned with the Rev. Dan Lundgren officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Augustine Ruiz Jr. July 8, 1957 at Kinsley. He died Dec. 3, 1998. A lifetime resident of Larned, she was a certified nurses aide and certified medication aide at Hammond Holiday Home in Larned. Mrs. Ruiz was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Larned. Survivors include three sons, Robert A. Ruiz of Wichita, John C. Ruiz of Great Bend, and Richard Ruiz of Larned; three daughters, Lucille Sickles, Theresa Wright, and Rose Marie Weisensee all of Larned; eight brothers, Lupe Perez, Frank Perez, John Perez, Manuel Perez, Raymond Perez, Terry Perez, and Tony Perez all of Larned, and Felix Perez of Hutchinson; two sisters, Eleanor Sanders and Linda Garcia both of Larned; and 12 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Pete Perez, one sister Jane Bronson, and one grandson, Robert Francis Ruiz. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Beckwith Mortuary in Larned. Juneva Bernice Tunder Aug. 6, 1976, at Apostolic Faith Church in Guymon. A resident of Guymon, he was employed by Wego Services and was owner and operator of Ron's Welding Service. Anderson was a member of Victory Memorial United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of the home; his parents, of Guymon; and one sister, Ava Purcell of Alva, Okla. LARNED - Walter Andrulis, 67, died May 8 at Via Christi St. Francis Campus in Wichita. he was Born Jan. 18, 1935, at Lundington, Mich., the son of Matthew Bernard and Catherine Olive Nash Andrulis. A resident of Medicine Lodge since 1994, coming from Larned, he was a former dry waller for Hanson Dry Wall Company. Andrulis was a member of Worldwide Church of God in Salina. Survivors include two sons, David Andrulis of Otis, and Paul Andrulis of Claflin; two daughters, Sandy Medenhall of Perkins, Okla., and Karen Andrulis of Russell; one brother, Clark Andrulis of Hubbard, Mich.; ten grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son Michael Andrulis; one daughter Patricia; two brothers, Roger Andrulis, and Art Andrulis; and one grandchild. There is no visitation, cremation has taken place. A family memorial service will be announced at a later date by Beckwith Mortuary in Larned. May 12, 2002
