Rita Marie Decker, 62, died May 25 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born May 10, 1940, in La Crosse, the daughter of Martin and Irene Meier Knoll. She married
Fred Decker June 14, 1958. A resident of Great Bend for 40 years, coming from La Crosse, she was a waitress at the Holiday Inn Restaurant of Great Bend. Mrs. Decker was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church of Great Bend. Survivors include two sons, Fred L. Decker of Roosevelt, Utah, and Melvin J. Decker of Great Bend; three daughters, Delores Gates of Salida, Colo., Maxine Wilkinson of Great Bend and Pauline A. Greene of Pawnee Rock; two brothers, Richard Knoll and Donald Knoll, both of Great Bend; one sister, Mary Kingston of Odessa, Texas; and 13 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Cecilia Ann Schneider. Altar Society rosary will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Jun Mangulabnan officiating. Burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park cemetery north of Great Bend. Friends may call from noon until 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Brett Robert Bowman 1979-2002
MACKSVILLE - Brett Robert Bowman, 22, died May 23 as a result of an automobile accident near Macksville. He was born Aug. 9, 1979, at Attica, the son of Gerald D. and Kay Jean Eck Bowman. He was a graduate of North Central Kansas Technical College of Beloit, where he studied carpentry and brick-laying. A resident of Larned for one year, coming from Macksville, he worked for Hopper Construction of Goddard for one year and was an assembler for Cross Mfg. of Lewis. Bowman was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church of Belpre. Survivors include his parents of Macksville; one brother, Craig S. Bowman of Wichita; two sisters, Amy L. McGuire of Goddard and Kari L. Bowman of Macksville; and his grandparents, Steve and Helen Eck of Sharon. Funeral Mass will be at 1:30 today at the church with the Rev. Dennis L. Reed officiating. Milton 'Stubby' Anthony Gabel 1933-2002
NESS CITY - Milton "Stubby" Anthony Gabel, 68, died May 23 at Ness County Hospital in Ness City. He was born Nov. 14, 1933 at Ness City, the son of Pete and Martina Meis Gabel. A lifetime resident of Ness City, he was a retired Mail Carrier for the Postal Service. Gabel was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Ness City. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. Survivors include his companion, Albina Besperat of La Crosse; six sons, Ronnie Gabel, Donnie Gabel, and Terry Gabel all of Ness City, Gary Gabel of Great Bend, Kelly Gabel of Oakley, and Tim Gabel of Garden City; two daughters, Debbie Overocker of Garden City, and Sherry Castor of Ness City; four brothers, Pete Gabel of Portsmith, R.I., "Cactus" Gabel of Abilene, Leo T. Gabel of Forsyth, Mo. and Gene Gabel of Ness City; and four sisters, Nita Brackney of Ness City, Marge Leiker of Aurora, Colo., Patti Weigle of Lakewood, Colo., and Bonnie Rebel of Ness City. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Theresa Gabel, and Brenda Zeller; four brothers, Chuck Gabel, Rusty Gabel, Delbert Gabel, and Hubert Gabel; one infant brother, and one infant sister. Nicholas Mathias Weber, Oct. 22, 1946 at Beaver. He died Sept. 3, 2001. A resident of Great Bend for 15 years, coming from Dubuque, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Weber was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and St. Rose Altar Society both of Great Bend, she was a former member of St. Catherine Catholic Church in Dubuque and the St. Catherine Christian Mothers and Daughters of Isabella. Survivors include two sons, Nicholas "N.R." Weber and Roy J. Weber both of Dubuque; two daughters, Karen K. Weber of Great Bend, and Shirley Zink of Newton; three brothers, August Lang of Hoisington, Vernon Lang of Derby, and Marvin "Spank" Lang of Hays; two sisters, Susanna Redetzke and Elfrieda Woydziak both of Claflin; and six grandchildren. GALATIA - Thomas "Edwin" Karst, 91, died May 22 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus, in Great Bend. He was born Feb. 13, 1911, in Winnipeg, Canada, the son of Benjamin and Mary E. Uffelman Karst. He married
Nora Viola Manke Feb. 18, 1931, in Barton County. A lifetime resident of Barton County, he was a farmer, car dealer and retired owner of Karst Oil Company. Mr. Karst was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Galatia; former president of Galatia State Bank; Mayor of Galatia and Galatia city councilman, former board member of Hoisington Lutheran Hospital and served on the forming committee of Golden Belt Home Health. Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Merrily Kathleen Collins of Great Bend and Winona Grace Thomas of Salina; four grandchildren, six step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Alex Karst, Ben Karst, Edd Karst and Ted Karst; five sisters, Millie Karst, Molly Clayton, Lydia Ohman, Marie Funk and Pauline Becker. Wesley H. Hagelgantz May 3, 1937, at Bison. He died June 18, 1997. A resident of Bazine since 1994, coming from Great Bend, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Hagelgantz was a member of Bazine Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Survivors include two sons, Robert Hagelgantz of Bazine and Calvin Hagelgantz of Garden City; one daughter, Elaine Johnson of Bazine; one brother, Samuel A. Miller of LaCrosse; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Alex Miller and David Miller; one sister, Martha Smith; one infant daughter, Luanne Hagelgantz; and one granddaughter, Paula Hagelgantz. CHASE-Elnora Dupont, 68, died May 23 at her home in Chase. She was born March 26, 1934, at rural Chase, the daughter of Henry and Lavera Tedford Dupont. A lifetime resident of Chase, she was a homemaker. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Ellinwood and VFW Auxiliary of Lyons. Richard A. King on Dec. 30, 1928. He died Feb. 13, 1978. A longtime resident of Larned, she was a homemaker. Mrs. King was a member of First United Methodist Church, a past Worthy Matron, past district aide of White Cross Chapter and Order of the Eastern Star, all of Larned. Survivors include one son, Richard King and his wife Marcia of Larned; one daughter, Virginia Helms of Waco; one brother, Kenneth Pinkstaff and his wife Alberta of Wichita; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Kirby of Larned; one sister, Myrna Overton of El Cajon, Calif.; 34 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Virgil F. Emery Schmidt on Dec. 8, 1990, at Stafford. He died Sept. 6, 2001. A longtime resident of Stafford, she was a homemaker and dietician for the Stafford District Hospital and Leisure Homestead. Mrs. Schmidt was a member of the Nazarene Church and Friends Church, both at Stafford, and the Ladies Missionary Society. Survivors include two sons, Jerry L. Powell and James R. Powell, both of Topeka; three daughters, Mary Ellen Moore of Great Bend, Edith Ann Lance of Davenport, Iowa, and Nancy Jean Anton of Plains.; two stepsons, Gerald Schmidt and Larry Schmidt, both of Sylvia; one stepdaughter, Nadine Fuller of McPherson; one sister, Ruth E. Anthony P. "Tony" Unrein on Sept. 7, 1932, at Schoenchen. He died May 6, 1991. A resident of Dodge City for five years, coming from Great Bend and La Crosse, she was a homemaker and housekeeper for St. Rose Rectory. Mrs. Unrein was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Altar Society, both of Great Bend. Survivors include two sons, Lee Unrein of Edmond, Okla., and Jerry Unrein of Gravois Mills, Mo.; one daughter, LaVada Gjerstad of Dodge City; one brother, Fred R. Sauer of Wichita; six sisters, Sister Anna Sauer of Concordia, Germaine Barker of Calif., Regina Bartlett of Mo., Florine Giessler of Ore., Eleanor Crowell of Cheyenne Wells, Colo., and Philomena Sims of Wichita; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
