VALLEY CENTER - Mildred R. Robbins Babb, 84, died March 1. She married
Kenneth Babb. He preceded her in death. A resident of Valley Center, coming from Great Bend, she was a homemaker. Survivors include two daughters, Pat Stoffel of Topeka, and Peggy Jensen of Valley Center; one brother, Phil Robbins of Wichita; five sisters, Helen Hill, Phyllis Allen both of Wichita, Ruth Kalp, Shirley Gibbons both of Valley Center, and Mary Fowler of Independence; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Robbins, and Ernest Robbins; and four sisters, Opal Baker, Rojean Kerns, Birdie Harris, and Myrtle Purkey. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Hillside Funeral Home East in Wichita. There is no visitation, and no memorials are suggested. March 3, 2002
Pauline Becker 1909-2002
RUSSELL Pauline Becker, 93, died March 1 at Integrated Health Services at Great Bend. She was born Jan. 13, 1909 at Ness City, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Uffelmann Karst. She attended St. Rose Dominican Nursing School in Great Bend. She married
George Becker Dec. 18, 1949 at Galatia. He died March 4, 1998. A resident of Ness and Barton counties, she worked at Russell Hospital. Mrs. Becker was a member of St. Lutheran Church, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary both of Russell. Survivors include one brother, Edwin Karst of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Alex Karst, Edward Karst, Benjamin Karst, and Ted Karst; and four sisters, Mollie Clayton, Lydia Ohman, Millie Karst, and Marie Funk. Cremation has taken place. Memorials services will be announced at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of Pohlman's Mortuary in Russell. March 3, 2002
Ruth L. Baldwin 1950-2002
LARNED - Ruth L Badwin, 51, died March 1 at her home in Larned. She was born April 23, 1950, in Nelson, Neb., the daughter of John H. and Patricia A. Button Slaughter Hunter. She married
Marvin A. Baldwin March 13, 1971 at Mankato. A resident of Larned, coming from Hays, she was a registered nurse at Larned State Hospital. Mrs. Baldwin was a member of First Christian Church, and the Priscilla Group both of Larned. Survivors include her husband of the home; three daughters, Dawn Swinford of Tulsa, Okla., Lisa West of Denver, Colo., and Nancy Baldwin of Larned; five brothers, Joseph Hunter of Ojai, Calif., William Hunter of Denver, James Hunter of Annandale, Va., John Hunter of Fort Worth, Texas, and Daniel Hunter of Garfield. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church in Larned, with the Rev. Dan Lundgren officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Monday at Beckwith Mortuary in Larned. RUSSELL - Mollie Keil, 98, died March 1 at Independence, Mo. She was born March 13, 1903 at rural Milberger, the daughter of George Adam and Marie Elizabeth Boxberger Karst. She married
Edwin Keil March 7, 1926. He preceded her in death in 1992. A resident of Milberger most of her life, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Keil was a member of United Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Milberger. Survivors include two sons, Leon Keil of Independence, Mo. and Eldon Keil of Rogers, Ark.; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Loren Keil; four brothers, Samuel Karst, William Karst, Emil Karst, and Peter Karst; and two sisters, Ida Radke, and Minnie Schwien. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church in Milberger, with the Rev. Keith Kreitzer officiating. Burial will be at Milberger cemetery in Milberger. Esther I. Rogers 1910-2002
BARTLESVILLE, OKLA.- Esther I. Rogers, 91, died Feb. 27 at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville. She was born April 26, 1910 in Russell, the daughter of Alexander and Alvina Zahrendt Heise. She was a 1928 graduate of Russell High School. She married
Timothy Birl Rogers in 1960. He died June 12, 1970. A resident of Bartlesville, coming from Great Bend, she worked at Cities Service Oil Company. Mrs. Rogers was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Cities Service Retireešs Club. Survivors include one nephew Rusty Rogers of Bartlesville; one niece Sally Rogers of Wichita; two great-nephews; and two great-nieces. She was preceded in death by one brother, Lee Heise, and three sisters, Carolyn, Mae, and Lydia. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Sneed Chapel at the church, with the Rev. Charles E. "Chuck" Cowell officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Sunset Life cemetery in El Dorado, with the Rev. David Rogers officiating. There is no visitation listed. HAYS - Amelia A. "Molly" Schulte, 86, died Feb. 27 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. She was born March 6, 1915, in Hays, the daughter of Michael and Elizabeth Weigel Dinkel. She married
John E. Schulte on Sept. 24, 1940, at Victoria. A resident of Hays, coming from Victoria in March 2001, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Schulte was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and Christian Mothers Altar Society, all of Victoria. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Damian Schulte of Escondido, Calif., and Regis Schulte of Wichita; two daughters, Claudia Hertel of Great Bend and Carey Schulte of Ellis; one brother, Dan Dinkel of Denver, Colo.; two sisters, Ann Smith of Gorham and Lioba Keller of Park city; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Albert Dinkel, Harry Dinkel, Ben Dinkel and Bill Dinkel; and two sisters, Albina Dreiling and Rose Brungardt. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, followed by a Daughters of Isabella and Christian Mothers Altar Society rosary at 8 p.m., all at Clinešs Mortuary in Victoria. LARNED - Helen Althea Fellows Wilson Polzin, 92, died Feb. 27 at Fort Dodge. She was born Aug. 2, 1909, near Keosauqua, Iowa, the daughter of Asa and Edith Fellows. She married
Merwin Wilson on Dec. 25, 1938, in Ottumwa, Iowa. He died in May 1976. She then married
Edward J. Polzin on Nov. 24, 1979. A resident of Fort Dodge since 1997, coming from Larned, she was a teacher and musician. Mrs. Polzin was a member of Presbyterian Church and Church Circle, and also active in Daughters of American Revolution, Eastern Star and National Education Association. Survivors include one son, Robert W. Wilson of Toano, Va.; two stepsons, Marvin Polzin of West Plains, Mo., and James Polzin; one daughter, Marjorie West; one stepdaughter, Jewell Lewis of Larned; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Larned, with the Rev. Jim Hawthorne officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Ruth Elsie Fischer, 81 of Great Bend, died Feb. 27 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born May 18, 1920, in Michigan, the daughter of Joseph F. and Meta Weymeier Krueger. She married
Edwin Karl Fischer on July 15, 1938, at Hudson. He died on Dec. 13, 1993. A resident of Great Bend since 1990, coming from Seward, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Fischer was a member of Peace United Church of Christ in Hudson. Survivors include one son, Ricky L. Fischer of Great Bend; four daughters, Janice M. Rose of Hudson, Janet R. Davis of Athens, Texas, Judy A. Fischer of Reno, Nev., and Lila L. Drees of Great Bend; four brothers, Herbert Krueger of Kansas City, Mo., David Krueger of Princeton, Texas, Elgar Krueger of Edinberg, Texas, and Samuel Krueger of Fort Worth, Texas; one sister, Selma Banman of Mount Vernon, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandson, David Dunn. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Nick Prather officiating. ARKANSAS CITY - Wilma G. Stecklein, 87, died April 14 at South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center. She was born Feb. 15, 1915, the daughter of William Berry and Lucy Jenette Fain Harwell. She was a 1932 graduate of Arkansas City High School and attended Cowley County Community College and business school in Tulsa, Okla. She married
Jack Kimsey. He died in 1947. She married
John Stecklein in May 1967. He died in 2001. A resident of Arkansas City, coming from Great Bend, she worked as an accountant for Fuller Brush Company. Mrs. Stecklein was a member of Business Professional Women and St. Rose Altar Society, both in Great Bend. Survivors include one son, Jack Wayne Kimsey; one daughter, Lillian Jenette "Jenny" Kimsey Pappan; one sister, Edna Mae Harwell Hamm; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Miller Harwell; and two sisters, Lovie Fry and Melissa Harwell. Funeral was at 10 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Arkansas City with the Rev. John Brungardt officiating. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery. Carrie Lee Pekarek, 72, of Great Bend, died April 28 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 22, 1930, in Gorham, the daughter of Alois and Cecelia Lederhos Mermis. She married
Kenneth H. "Bud" Pekarek June 16, 1947, in Gorham. A resident of Great Bend since 1974, coming from Holyrood, she was a retired secretary for Brougher Oil Incorporated and the Lorraine School District. Mrs. Pekarek was a member of American Legion Auxiliary of Holyrood, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary of Russell and attended the Catholic church. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Kent L. Pekarek of Shawnee and Kevin G. Pekarek of Ellinwood; one brother, Emanul Mermis of Crane Hill, Ala.; four sisters, Lucille Strecker of Denver, Colo., Norma Kite and Alice Walker, both of Great Bend and Betty Ingram of Manhattan; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Alois "Shorty" Mermis and Cletus "Pete" Mermis; and one sister, Isabel Cornell. Helen Louise Phillips, 80, of Great Bend, died April 29 at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 26, 1922, in White Deer, Texas, the daughter of Lee Roy and Julia Marian Wright Powers. She married
Dale V. Phillips Sept. 6, 1945, in Longview, Texas. A resident of Great Bend since 1933, coming from White Deer, she was a registered nurse at CKMC for 13 years. Mrs. Phillips was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, RSVP, Red Cross volunteer and Meals on Wheels volunteer, all of Great Bend. She was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Randal S. Phillips of Great Bend; one daughter, Renee L. Patterson of Great Bend; one brother, Dr. Gene R. Powers of Austin, Texas; one sister, Josephine Milikien of Port Aransas, Texas; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Lee Roy Powers. Memorial service will be announced at a later date by Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. George L. Roof Dec. 31, 1948, in Mt. Hope. He died June 21, 2001. A resident of Ellinwood, she worked as a greeter at Wal-Mart in Great Bend, had been a sales clerk at Montgomery Ward and Gibsons Discount, both in Great Bend, and at H&H IGA, Western Auto, Banner Variety and Huschka Liquor, all of Ellinwood. Mrs. Roof was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Rebekah Lodge and American Legion Auxiliary, all of Ellinwood. Survivors include one son, Eric Roof of Pawnee Rock; two daughters, Sharion Simpson of Hutchinson and Diana Weiser of Champaign, Ill.; one brother, John Logan Scott of Wichita; one sister, Sue Brower of Lyons; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Theo Scott; two sisters, Lona Potter and Mary Helm; and one grandson, Chris Roof.
