Viola E. Bender 1915-2002
RUSSELL - Viola E. Bender, 86, died March 5 at Russell Regional Hospital in Russell. She was born May 21, 1915, in Russell County, the daughter of John J. and Katherine Maier Mai. She married
Herbert H. Bender Sept. 19, 1937, in rural Russell. A lifelong resident of the Russell area, she was a homemaker and worked as a cook for a rural school district as well as for the Russell area school district. Mrs. Bender was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Ladies Circle and Germans from Russia, all of Russell. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Gerald Bender of Russell; two daughters, Lois Cave of Marysville, Wash., and Eileene Bender of Topeka; four brothers, Walter Mai of Great Bend, Clarence Mai of Wichita, Earlin Mai and Howard Mai, both of Russell; one sister, Wilmetta Deutsch of Hoisington; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by one brother, Leo Victor Mai. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Henry Hartman officiating. Burial will be at Russell City cemetery in Russell. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Pohlman's Mortuary in Russell and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Gene Hartford Scott 1923-2002
ST. JOHN - Gene Hartford Scott, 78, died March 4 at his residence in St. John. He was born Oct. 15, 1923, in Liberal, the son of Roy Hartford and Sina Comora Scott. He attended Barton County Community College. He married
Earline Kilgore Jan. 23, 1946, in Liberal. A resident of St. John since 1953, coming from Liberal, he worked for 40 years for Northern Natural Gas Company and for 12 years as a bus driver for St. John schools. Scott was a member of First Baptist Church where he was a deacon and trustee, Gideon International, city councilman for four years, Shepherd Center board member, Senior Citizens board member and Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of St. John. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Dan Scott of Great Bend and Ron Scott of Dodge City; one sister, Mary Ruth Snyder of Garden City; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles William Scott. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. David A. Ford officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Friends may call from from 1-8 p.m. today and Friday at Minnis Chapel in St. John. TUCSON, Ariz. - Velma L. Howell, 84, died March 5. She was born in 1918. She married
Virgil V. Howell. A resident of Tucson, coming from Great Bend, she was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Nelson Howell of Tucson; one daughter, Evelyn Powers of Tucson; one brother, Paul Ledbetter of San Jose, Calif.; one sister, Gladys White of Great Bend; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Irene Dreiling. A resident of Wichita, coming from Great Bend, he was former owner of Dreiling IGA in Great Bend and retired Excel Meat Packing Company employee. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Clarence Dreiling and Richard Dreiling; two stepsons, Donald Snider and Richard Snider; one stepdaughter, Gloria Tabor; two brothers, Charles Dreiling and Donald Dreiling; 11 grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Charles H. Austin, 85, died Feb. 1. He was born March 31, 1916, in Cottonwood Falls, the son of Fred J. and Nora Ward Austin. He was a graduate of Chase County Community High School. He married
Joannamae Gurney. A resident of San Diego, he worked California First Bank of San Diego for 35 years. Austin was a member of San Diego Masonic Lodge 35 and Mission Beach Pyramid 56. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Rick Austin of Santee, Calif. and Mike Austin of Ramona, Calif.; one brother, Fred J. Austin Jr. of Topeka; one sister, Aline Schmitt of Great Bend; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Lorene Scott. ELLINWOOD - Laura Augusta Eberhart, 90, died March 4 at the Long-term Care Unit of Central Kansas Medical Center in Ellinwood. She was born Sept. 7, 1911, in Ellinwood, the daughter of George and Bertha Schmidt Knop. She married
Homer F. Eberhart May 1, 1933, in Ellinwood. He died Sept. 22, 1994. A lifelong resident of Ellinwood, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Eberhart was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, Sunday School teacher, numerous church boards and committees and Twentieth Century Club, all of Ellinwood. Survivors include two sons, Jerry Eberhart of Raymond and Richard Eberhart of Hutchinson; one daughter, Janet Robinson of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Andy Keltner officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Merle E. Johnson June 5, 1929, in Garden City. He died May 26, 1966. A lifelong resident of Larned, she was a homemaker and retired nurses aide at St. Joseph Hospital in Larned. Mrs. Johnson was a member of First Christian Church in Larned. Survivors include one daughter, Odessa M. Nelson of Garfield; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one stepson, William D. Johnson; and one sister, Lola Johnson. Daniel Richard Steitz 1958-2002
AURORA, Colo. - Daniel Richard Steitz, 44, died March 1 at University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver. He was born Jan. 20, 1958, in Ness City, the son of Richard and Emilie Mateyec Steitz. He was a graduate of Ness City High School and attended Barton County Community College. A resident of Aurora for the past 15 years, coming from Ness City, he was co-owner of Advanced Auto Glass Company of Aurora. Steitz was a member of Solid Rock Christian Center of Aurora. Survivors include one brother, Jim Steitz of Great Bend. He was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Steitz. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ness City, with the Rev. Dr. Gary Teske officiating. Cremation has taken place, inurnment will be at Ness City Cemetery. Survivors include four sons, Larry Meitler, Kenneth Meitler and Raymond Dee Meitler, all of Sylvan Grove, and Ronald Meitler of Bison; six daughters, Anita Brichacek and Janelle Snyder, both of Salina, LaDonna Schoen and Mary Lynne Meitler, both of Sylvan Grove, Linda Jensen of Choctaw, Okla., and Peggy Meitler of Beloit; one sister, Elda Chegwidden of Sylvan Grove; 21 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Neil Shelton of Dodge City; three stepsons, Dennis Glaze of Skiatook, Okla., Donald Glaze of Greenville, S.C., and Daniel Glaze of Minneola; four daughters, Dixie Link of Topeka, Carol Brandl of North Platte, Neb., Carmen Wilds of Collyer and Celia Heller of Kinsley; eight grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; one great-grandson; and four step-great-grandchildren. Martin K. Mitchell April 8, 1927, in Ponca City, Okla. He died in 1981. She attended college in Winfield, Alva, Okla., and Edmond, Okla. A resident of Hutchinson, coming from Macksville where she resided from 1929 to 1981, she was a school teacher for 16 years and worked at Larned State Hospital. Mrs. Mitchell was a member of the Methodist Church in Blackwell, Okla., and OES of Macksville. Survivors include five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Martin K. Mitchell Jr.; one daughter, Mary Lou Sykes; one brother, William Patterson; and two sisters, Bessie Patterson and Mildred Patterson. Jack M. Dunham, 79, of Great Bend died March 1, at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born July 9, 1922 at Enid, Okla., the son of Roy and Margaret Trower Dunham. He married
Esther Butler June 9, 1945 in Hays. A resident of Great Bend for 36 years, coming from Oklahoma, he was a driller -tool pusher in the oil field. Duham was a member of Masonic Lodge 15 A.F. and A.M. in Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Steve Dunham, David Dunham, and Gary Dunham, all of Great Bend; two daughters, Cindy Dunham of Hollywood, Fla., and Janet Meyeres of Great Bend; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son Jack L. Dunham. Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Hillcrest Memorial Park cemetery in Great Bend, with the Rev. Kevin Baxter officiating. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. till noon on Monday at the Great Bend Family Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimerıs Disease Association in care of the mortuary.
