Martha C. Brauer 1908-2002
LA CROSSE - Martha C. Brauer, 93, died March 7 at Rush County Nursing Home in La Crosse. She was born Aug. 19, 1908, in White City, the daughter of Reinhold and Anna Johnke Koepsel. She married
Waldemar Brauer Sept. 4, 1946, in Wichita. He died Nov. 21, 1982. A resident of La Crosse for more than 50 years, she worked as a custodian for a medical office. Mrs. Brauer was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary in La Crosse. Survivors include four sisters, Jennie Cusick of Wichita, Sophia Mastin of Beloit, Anne Ohm of Salina and Elsie Carson of White City. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter Koepsel, Fred Koepsel and Gilbert Koepsel; and three sisters, Adelia Douglas, Hildia Riffell and Celia Capito. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Janousek Funeral Home Chapel in La Crosse, with the Rev. Maurice Schaus officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse City Cemetery. RUSSELL - Florence Dumler Schruben, 80, died March 7 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Hays. She was born July 29, 1921, in Barton County, near Milberger, the daughter of Emanuel and Elisabeth Rein Keil. She married
Carl A. Dumler Aug. 23, 1942, in Hugo, Okla. He died Oct. 10, 1973. She married
Leonard W. Schruben Jan. 21, 1979, in Manhattan. He died Oct. 23, 2001. A resident of the Russell area, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Schruben was a member of First Lutheran Church in Manhattan and American Legion Auxiliary in Russell. She was a past board member of the Kansas Wheat Commission. Survivors include one son, Carl A. Dumler Jr. of Russell; two stepsons, Dale Schruben of Kingsville, Texas, and Lee Schruben of Berkley, Calif.; four daughters, Jean Naegele of Hays, Rita Atkerson and Kay Dinkel, both of Russell and Jody Dumler Johnson of Manhattan; one sister, Luella Saxton of Tempe, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Beatrice Bergman, Naomi Barah and Allegra Fisher; and one granddaughter, Cindy Atkerson. RUSSELL - Eugene H. Dietz, 69, died Feb. 28 at his home in rural Russell. He was born Sept. 14, 1932, in Russell County, the son of Emil and Ruth Dumler Dietz. A lifelong resident of the Russell area, he was a farmer and stockman. Dietz was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Survivors include one son, James Dietz of Danville, Ill.; two sisters, Merna Holkum of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Dorothy Dolecheck of Hoisington; and two step-grandchildren. Billy Joe 'BJ' Shaffer 1979-2002
CALDWELL - Billy Joe "BJ" Shaffer, 22, died March 7 in Blackwell, Okla. He was born May 17, 1979, in Kingman, the son of Randy Shaffer and Annette Mortimer. A resident of Caldwell, he worked as a Sumner County road and bridge employee. Survivors include his companion, Holly Warner of Caldwell; his father of Caldwell; his mother and stepfather, Annette and Ron Britton of Great Bend; two sisters, Missy Shaffer and Nikki Shaffer, both of Caldwell; and his grandparents, Joe and Alberta Shaffer of Caldwell and Bill Mortimer of Great Bend. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Caldwell, with the Rev. Jan McDaniel officiating. Burial will be at Caldwell City Cemetery. There is no visitation listed. LINDSBORG - Elizabeth Reimer, 89, died March 7 at Aberdeen Village in Olathe. She was born April 9, 1912, in Canton, the daughter of Frank and Anna Friesen Banman. She married
Alvin J. Reimer July 21, 1936, in Newton. He died Dec. 28, 1959. A resident of Lindsborg since 1958, coming from Hoisington, she was a homemaker and worked as a secretary at Bethany College in Lindsborg before retiring. Mrs. Reimer was a member of Hoffnengsau Mennonite Church in Inman, former member of Alexanderwhol Mennonite Church in Goessel, attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Lindsborg and was a member of PEO Chapter CC. Survivors include one son, Jon M. Reimer of Olathe; two daughters, Janice Y. Derksen of St. Paul, Minn. and Judith A. Folsch of Hays; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Pete Banman, Jake Banman, Otto Banman and John Banman. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church in Lindsborg, with the Rev. David Smith officiating. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church cemetery in Inman. Eloise Smith Jan. 8, 1951, in Ellinwood. She died June 14, 2000. A lifelong resident of the Raymond area, he was a farmer. Loesch was a member of United Methodist Church in Alden. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include three sons, Jim Loesch of Hoisington, Jerry Loesch of Great Bend and Jeff Loesch of Dodge City; one daughter, Janean Hicks of Inman; one brother, Delbert Loesch of Lyons; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Connor Aylward. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the church with the Revs. Bill Stapleton and Wayne Flanders officiating. John E. Schulte on Sept. 24, 1940, at Victoria. A resident of Hays, coming from Victoria in March 2001, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Schulte was a member of St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and Christian Mothers Altar Society, all of Victoria. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Damian Schulte of Escondido, Calif., and Regis Schulte of Wichita; two daughters, Claudia Hertel of Great Bend and Carey Schulte of Ellis; one brother, Dan Dinkel of Denver, Colo.; two sisters, Ann Smith of Gorham and Lioba Keller of Park city; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Albert Dinkel, Harry Dinkel, Ben Dinkel and Bill Dinkel; and two sisters, Albina Dreiling and Rose Brungardt. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, followed by a Daughters of Isabella and Christian Mothers Altar Society rosary at 8 p.m., all at Cline's Mortuary in Victoria. Merwin Wilson on Dec. 25, 1938, in Ottumwa, Iowa. He died in May 1976. She then married
Edward J. Polzin on Nov. 24, 1979. A resident of Fort Dodge since 1997, coming from Larned, she was a teacher and musician. Mrs. Polzin was a member of Presbyterian Church and Church Circle, and also active in Daughters of American Revolution, Eastern Star and National Education Association. Survivors include one son, Robert W. Wilson of Toano, Va.; two stepsons, Marvin Polzin of West Plains, Mo., and James Polzin; one daughter, Marjorie West; one stepdaughter, Jewell Lewis of Larned; one granddaughter; and one great-granddaughter. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Larned, with the Rev. Jim Hawthorne officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Ruth Elsie Fischer, 81 of Great Bend, died Feb. 27 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born May 18, 1920, in Michigan, the daughter of Joseph F. and Meta Weymeier Krueger. She married
Edwin Karl Fischer on July 15, 1938, at Hudson. He died on Dec. 13, 1993. A resident of Great Bend since 1990, coming from Seward, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Fischer was a member of Peace United Church of Christ in Hudson. Survivors include one son, Ricky L. Fischer of Great Bend; four daughters, Janice M. Rose of Hudson, Janet R. Davis of Athens, Texas, Judy A. Fischer of Reno, Nev., and Lila L. Drees of Great Bend; four brothers, Herbert Krueger of Kansas City, Mo., David Krueger of Princeton, Texas, Elgar Krueger of Edinberg, Texas, and Samuel Krueger of Fort Worth, Texas; one sister, Selma Banman of Mount Vernon, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Cynthia Dee 'Cindy' Truesdell LoBurgio 1954-2002
Cynthia Dee "Cindy" Truesdell LoBurgio, 47, of Great Bend, died March 4 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Nov. 12, 1954, in Lyons, the daughter of Gerald Edwin and Sue Ann Davis Truesdell. She was a 1972 graduate of Lyons High School and attended Sterling College. She graduated from Barton County Community College with a nursing degree. A resident of Great Bend since 1977, coming from Lyons, she worked as a registered nurse. She was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, American Legion and Soup Kitchen, all of Great Bend, A. A. volunteer for Special Olympics and Birthright. She was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. Survivors include two sons, Nicolas LoBurgio and Samuel LoBurgio, both of Great Bend; one daughter, Jennifer Major of Great Bend; her father of Wichita; and three sisters, Tamra Green of Columbia, Mo., Sherri DeBlieux of Montezuma and Terri Johnson of Lyons. Nancy Poole Aug. 16, 1980, in Redstone, Colo. A resident of Burdett for 22 years, he was a teacher and coach for USD 496. Artaz attended Burdett United Methodist Church and was involved in the Mid American Youth Basketball Program, all of Burdett. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Jayson Artaz of Burdett; one brother, Rick Artaz of Glenwood Springs; and one sister, Rhonda Palmer of Carbondale, Colo. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Burdett School Gymnasium, with the Rev. Rob Schmutz offficiating. Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. MST Monday in Carbondale. Archie L. Beller Nov. 10, 1928, in Phillipsburg. A resident of Hesston since 1998, coming from Great Bend and Dodge City, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Beller was a member of First United Methodist Church, 20th Century Club, Pedal Pushers and Elks BPO Lodge 1127, all of Great Bend. Survivors include her husband of the home; one daughter, Margaret L. Kraisinger of Halstead; one sister, Dorothy Campbell of Larned; and three grandchildren. Service will be announce at a later date. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements are by Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. March 7, 2002
