Norman Lewis Thompson 1916-2002
Norman Lewis Thompson, 85, of Great Bend, died March 18 at Integrated Health Services of Great Bend. He was born Nov. 11, 1916, in Chockie, Okla., the son of Mack and Minnie Shipman Thompson. He married
Lelia Adele Turner March 26, 1938, in Kiowa, Okla. A resident of Great Bend since 1952, coming from Kiowa, he was an oilfield rig driller and tool pusher for Garvey Drilling and Pickrell Drilling Company. After retirement, he worked as a courier for Bank of America. Thompson was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Masonic Lodge, both of Great Bend. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Curtis Thompson of Sterling and David Thompson of Louisville, Ky.; two daughters, Betty Anderson of Winfield and Karen Barefield of Minneapolis; one brother, James Thompson of Oklahoma; three sisters, Magdaline Kiedaisch, Nora OšToole and Ruth Newberry, all of Oklahoma; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Mark Thompson, and NY Thompson Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Hal Staats officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Glenna M. Brassfield 1949-2002
BASEHOR - Glenna M. Brassfield, 53, died March 17 at her home in Basehor. She was born Feb. 15, 1949, in Kansas City, the daughter of Benjamin D. and Sophie Hurrelbrink Miller. She married
Ray "Gus" Brassfield. A resident of Basehor, she was a second grade teacher for USD 500 for 24 years. Mrs. Brassfield was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and Friends of the Library, both of Basehor. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Ben Basehor of the home; one daughter, Jo Anna Basehor of the home; her mother of Kansas City; and one sister, Sharon Rugan of Ellinwood. NORCATUR - Eunice Mae Thornton, 63, died March 17. She was born June 11, 1938, in Paintsville, Ky. She married
R.D. Thornton. A resident of Norcatur, she was a retired cook at the state hospital. Survivors include her husband of the home; two stepsons, Carvin Castle of West Virginia and Ray Thornton of Hays; three stepdaughters, Lisa Leichliter and Lucretia "Chris" Dempewolf, both of Norcatur and Lynette Streit of Larned; two brothers, Samuel Castle of Wharton, W.Va. and Everett Castle of Buchanan, W. Va.; four sisters, Phyllis Castle of Hays, Beulah Mullins of Jeffery, W. Va., Ivalee Doris Wilson of Wharton and Melody Franklin of Oceana, W. Va.; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Lori Rae Towery. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Enfield Funeral Home in Norton. Burial will be at Norcatur Cemetery. BELPRE - Dorothy Mayn Mead, 83, died March 17 at Hillsboro Community Medical Center in Hillsboro. She was born June 28, 1918, in Kinsley, the daughter of Herman and Annie Miller. She married
Raymon Bartlett July 1, 1936, in Kinsley. he died July 30, 1961. She married
Vernon R. Mead March 1, 1965, in Alva, Okla. He died Jan. 28, 1997. A resident of Canton for 30 years, coming from Belpre, Macksville and Kinsley, she was a licensed mental health nurse and worked at Larned State Hospital, retiring in 1983. Survivors include one son, Ronald D. Bartlett of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; one daughter, Cleara R. Clarkson of Canton; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Vera C. Berger; and one grandson, Larry A. Clarkson Jr. Graveside service was today at Farmington cemetery in Macksville, with the Rev. Hazel L. Greenway 1910-2002
McCRACKEN - Hazel L. Greenway, 92, died March 16 at Rush County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in La Crosse. She was born Jan. 31, 1910, in Morganville, the daughter of Herman F. and Juanita L. Stay Oelkers. She married
Clifford W. Greenway March 3, 1928, in Larned. He died Dec. 11, 1970. A lifelong resident of Rush County, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Greenway was a member of Golden Agers Senior Center and Church Quilting Club, both of McCracken. Survivors include one sister, Betty K. Boren of Mesa, Ariz.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Donald C. Greenway; and one brother, Keith F. Oelkers. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at La Crosse City cemetery in La Crosse, with the Rev. Marilyn Christmore officiating. Alois Joseph 'Lum' Yost 1916-2002
GORHAM - Alois Joseph "Lum" Yost, 85, died March 15 at Russell Regional Hospital in Russell. He was born June 3, 1916, in Gorham, the son of Godfrey and Mary Kuhn Yost. He married
Florence Jacobs Sept. 17, 1940, in Gorham. A lifelong resident of the Fairport and Gorham area, he worked in the oil fields all of his adult life and retired from Sohio Petroleum Company in 1983. Yost was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and charter member of Knights of Columbus, where he was a past grand knight, all in Gorham, Knights of Columbus in Victoria and American Legion in Russell. He served on the Fairport School Board, Gorham Rural High School board, Gorham City Council, Gorham Fire Department and Saint Mary's Catholic Church Parish Council. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Richard Yost of Hays, Jack Yost of Russell and Chuck Yost of Gorham; one daughter, Marcia Blundon of Russell; three brothers, Edwin Yost of Perryton, Texas, John Yost of Denver, Colo., and Jim Yost of Rincon, Ga.; two sisters, Roz Thomas of Russell and Mary Ann Froelich of Gorham; seven grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Douglas Yost; three brothers, Elmer Yost, Robert Yost and Vergil Yost; and one sister, Julita Yost. A combined Gorham and Victoria Knights of Columbus rosary is at 6:30 p.m. tonight, followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m. and a Gorham Daughters of Isabella rosary at 7:30, all at Clinešs Mortuary in Victoria. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Charles Steier officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery in Gorham. Glenn S. Fox July 26, 1936, in Rozel. A resident of Kansas City since 1938, coming from Manhattan, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Fox was a member of Central Methodist Church of Kansas City, Mo., Omega Chi Alpha sorority and Sigma Alpha Iota professional sorority. Survivors include her husband of the home; one daughter, Susanne Fox Perez of Mesquite, Texas; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Laura Uhland, Lola Powell, Berniece Fromong and Hazel Fromong. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Larned cemetery in Larned, with the Rev. Edward L. Krestin, 83, of Great Bend, died March 16 at his home. He was born Nov. 2, 1918, in Olmitz, the son of John and Thersia Suchy Krestin. He married
Irene J. Price April 15, 1988, in Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend for 14 years, coming from Olmitz, he was a retired farmer. Krestin was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend and Knights of Columbus in Olmitz. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; and three sisters, Frances Krestin of St. Mary's, and Alice South and Gertrude Smith, both of Great Bend. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Arthur Krestin, Fredrick Krestin and Clarence Krestin; and three sisters, Viola Kober, Caroline Mlyner and Grace Brack. Vigil service will be at 7 tonight at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Warren Stecklein officiating. Earl M. Phillips, 90, of Great Bend, died March 13 at Integrated Health Services in Great Bend. He was born July 10, 1911, in Lake City, the son of Cyrus V. and Edith V. Swope Phillips. He married
Freda P. Horney Sept. 16, 1933, in Kingman. She died Nov. 4, 1971. He married
Maxine Hickman Cole May 21, 1976, in Ellinwood. She died Feb. 1, 2000. A resident of Great Bend since 1934, coming from Coats, he was the proprietor of Phillips Sporting Goods. Phillips was a member of Masonic Lodge A.F and A.M. 15, Sunflower Shrine Club, York Rite Bodies and Central Kansas Association for the Visually Impaired, all of Great Bend and Isis Temple of Salina. Survivors include one stepson, Douglas Cole of San Diego, Calif.; one daughter, Beverly Phillips Komarek of Great Bend; two stepdaughters, Elaine Felke of Great Bend and Cathy Cole of Berton, Neb.; one brother, Dale Phillips of Great Bend; one sister, Bettye Nelson of Sarasota, Fla.; three grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul Phillips, Glenn Phillips and Lloyd Phillips. Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. March 23 at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with Harvard Townsend officiating. Inurnment will be at Great Bend Cemetery. William 'Dee' Hastings 1911-2002
LARNED - William "Dee" Hastings, 90, died March 14, at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born May 27, 1911, in Vandale, Ark., the son of William and Mary Hastings. He married
Ida Lee Brewster, Feb. 27, 1954, at Hernando, Miss. She died March 18, 1999. A resident of Great Bend for the past 18 years, coming from Larned, he was a former produce manager for C.O. Mammel's and Uncle Bill's Grocery Stores. Hastings was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, in Great Bend. Survivors include three sons, Donald Wayne Stout of Larned, Roy Stout of Nowata, Okla., and James Hastings of Danville, Ark.; five daughters, Martha Neldon of Wynn, Ark., Doris Moore of Larned, Brenda Evans of Hays, Linda Kaiser of Great Bend, and Donna Winchester of Walnut Ridge, Ark.; 26 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five sons, Bert Stout Jr., James Stout, Lamar Stout, J.C. Stout, J.E. Stout; two brothers, Johnny Hastings, and Blanchard Hastings; and one sister, Artie Berkley. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. at the church in Great Bend. Burial will be at the Larned cemetery in Larned. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned. Warren L. Moore 1923-2002
HOISINGTON - Warren L. Moore, 79, died March 12 at Holiday Resort in Emporia.
He was born Nov. 9, 1923 in Bushong, the son of Roscoe E. and Elvina Harder Moore.
A resident of Hoisington, he was a game protector for the Forestry Fish and Game Commission, and was manager at Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Refuge, he also worked for Marlette Coach Company and Graves Truck Lines both of Great Bend.
Moore was a member of Eagles Lodge 646, Cheyenne Bottoms Sportsman Club, both of Great Bend, Central Kansas Wildlife Association and life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars post 7428 both of Hoisington, National Rifle Association, AARP, charter member of American Legion Post 398 of Allen, life member of Emporia State University Alumni Association, and honorary retired member Teamsters Union Local 795 of Wichita. He was veteran of United States Merchant Marines, and United States Army Overseas South Pacific.
Survivors include his companion, Susie Messex of Hoisington; one son, James Moore of Emporia; and one sister, Margaret Keller of Emporia; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the V.F.W. in Hoisington.

Charles E. Kirkpatrick 1920-2002
STAFFORD - Charles E. Kirkpatrick, 81, died March 15, at Stafford District Hospital in Stafford. He was born Nov. 11, 1920 at Sylvia, the son of Charles and Effie Kreie Kirkpatrick. He was a 1938 graduate of Stafford High School. He married
Martha Morrison, Jan. 26, 1944 at rural St. John. A lifetime resident of Stafford, he was a farmer and stockman. Kirkpatrick was a member of Stafford Methodist Church, Stafford American Legion, Stafford County Historical and Genealogical Society, Stafford Development, past member of Stafford Saddle Club, Wichita Barbed Wire Association, American Hereford Association, Stafford Lions Club, and board of directors of the St. John Co-op and service station. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Ed Kirkpatrick of Stafford; and one daughter, Marsha Wilkening of Kinsley; and four grandchildren. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford, with the Rev. Kasey Crosby officiating. Burial will be at the Stafford Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-5 p.m. today at the chapel.
