Quintin J. Penka 1941-2002
TULSA, Okla. - Retired USAF CMSgt Quintin J. Penka passed away at his home in Tulsa on Sunday, Feb. 24, after a year long struggle with cancer. Quintin "Joe" had a 25-year career in the Air Force, taking him and his family all over the world. After retiring from the Air Force, he continued traveling within the United States during his 15-year tenure with General Electric Aircraft Engine Business Group. In August 2000, he joined BizJet International Sales and Services in Tulsa to manage the development of their CF34 Program. He was born on May 10, 1941, to Joseph Penka and Adolphine Quint Penka in Larned. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and graduated from Larned High School, joining the USAF upon graduation. He is preceded in death by his mother, Adolphine Penka Durler, and his fathers, Joseph Penka and John J. Durler Sr., all from Larned. He married
the former Susan A. Dupras of Marquette, Mich., on Sept. 21, 1963, in Marquette. He is survived by his wife Susan and their three children: Michelle M. Gower and husband Todd of Alamogordo, N.M., Todd J. Penka of Vineland, N.J., and Patrick J. Penka and wife Tracey of Oklahoma City, Okla. He has six grandchildren, Jacob, John and Megan Gower, Sara Penka, and Devin and Courtney Penka. He is also survived by one brother, Nathan F. Penka of Las Vegas, Nev., and his aunt, Lydia Quint Dreiling of Salina. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Beckwith Funeral Home, Larned. Visitation will be held at Beckwith Funeral Home tonight with evening vigil and rosary at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned, at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Internment with full military honors will be at Larned cemetery following the Mass. Willie B. Godfrey 1908-2002
MEADE - Willie B. Godfrey, 93, died Feb. 25 at Lone Tree Compassionate Care Center in Meade. She was born May 30, 1908, at Texico, N.M. She married
Odell Woodrow Godfrey July 13, 1939, at Walters, Okla. He died April 25, 1986. A resident of Meade since 1942, she was a retired cook for Meade District Hospital in Meade. Mrs. Godfrey was a member of First Baptist Church in Meade. Survivors include five sons, Jim Miller of Plains, Roy Miller of Mesa, Ariz., Kenneth Godfrey of Leon, Odell Godfrey of Wichita and Mike Godfrey of Great Bend; one daughter, Patricia Schlichting of Meade; and one sister, Rene Lloyd of Durant, Okla. She was preceded in death by three sons, Ralph Miller, Donald Miller and Bill Miller; and several brothers and sisters. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Rosalie Ruth Gilbert 1916-2002
INMAN - Rosalie Ruth Gilbert, 85, died Feb. 25 at Pleasant View Home in Inman. She was born March 30, 1916, in rural Chase, the daughter of Charles E. and Mary Ella Keys Boldt. She married
William A. Gilbert on Dec. 27, 1947, at Lyons. He died March 26, 1977. A resident of Inman since 2000, coming from McPherson and Chase, she was a retired school bus driver for Chase-Raymond school district. Mrs. Gilbert was a member of Community Presbyterian Church, Mother Singers, Extension Homemakers Unit and 4-H leader, all of Chase. Survivors include one son, Larry Gilbert of McPherson; one daughter, Janis Thogmartin of Ames, Iowa; one sister, Lucile Hager of Olathe; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul Boldt, Harold Boldt, Lowell Boldt and Wayne Boldt; and one sister, Roma Bordelon. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Revs. Jesse and Arlene Patrick officiating. Burial will be at Salem United Methodist cemetery in rural Bushton. Frieda M. Ochs 1908-2002
LA CROSSE - Frieda M. Ochs, 93, died Feb. 26 at Rush County Memorial Hospital in La Crosse. She was born Aug. 22, 1908, in Lydia, the daughter of Henry W. and Kathern Elizabeth Fuchs Kuhlmann. She married
Solomon Ochs on Aug. 10, 1933, in Lydia. He died May 28, 1953. A lifelong resident of Rush County, she was a school teacher before her marriage and worked at the ASCS office for more than 20 years, retiring in 1974. Mrs. Ochs was a member of First Lutheran Church, Women of the Lutheran Church of America, Eastern Star and Sixty Plus, all of La Crosse. Survivors include two sons, Harold "Hal" Ochs of Kingston, Tenn., and Marvin Ochs of Lompoc, Calif.; two daughters, Audrey White of Killeen, Texas, and Kaye Lynch of La Crosse; two sisters, Eva McCowan of Leoti and Mildred "Millie" Cascone of Pensacola, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur "Art" Kuhlmann; two sisters, Iola Harms and Esther Strecker; and two grandchildren, Harold "Skip" Ochs and Jeffery Ochs. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Maurice Schaus officiating. Emma Jacobsen 1910-2002
HOISINGTON - Emma Jacobsen, 91, died Feb. 27 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Nov. 21, 1910, at Lawrence, Neb., the daughter of Edward and Matilda Brennfoerder Schleif. She married
Sego Jacobsen on July 11, 1937, at Superior, Neb. He died July 6, 1998. A resident of Hoisington since 1951 before moving to Great Bend three years ago, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Jacobsen was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Hoisington. Survivors include two brothers, Leo Schleif of Davenport, Neb., and Vernon Schleif of Buckeye, Ariz. She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Garry Dassow officiating. Frank Wesley Hager 1926-2002
LITTLE RIVER - Frank Wesley Hager, 75, died March 28 at Hospice Residential Care Center in Hutchinson. He was born Sept. 12, 1926, the son of Wesley Zachariah and Naomi Emilia Scott Hager. A lifetime resident of Rice County, he was a farmer and stockman. Hager was a member of Grace Lutheran church in Lyons. Survivors include one brother, George Hager of Chase; and one niece, Anna Hager-Tudor of Bushton. Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Great Bend Family Mortuary in Great Bend, with the Rev. Andy Keltner officiating. Inurnment will be at the Lyons Municipal cemetery in Lyons. Ferdinand H. Dietz, July 14, 1936, south of Russell. He died April 4, 1993. A resident of Russell, coming from Milberger, Hoisington, and Gorham, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Dietz was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. Survivors include one son, Gayle Dietz of Lenexa; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Charles Oliver Helms 1940-2002
LARNED - Charles Oliver Helms, 61, died March 27 at St. John's Hospital in Leavenworth. He was born Aug. 11, 1940 at Larned, the son of Oliver Tucker and Tauncie Pearl Helms. A resident of Larned most of his life, he was a contractor. Helms was of the Christian faith. Survivors include one son, Cody Helms of Great Bend; two daughters, Patricia Satterlee of Great Bend, and Kathy Warner of Blackwell, Okla.; one stepdaughter, Debbie Hinds of Great Bend; one sister, Gloria Wilks of Wichita; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, John Fay and one sister, Beulah Nash. Private family memorial service will be held. Evelyn Emma Becker, 86, of Great Bend, died March 30 at Central Kansas Medical Center St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Sept. 26, 1915 at Rossville, the daughter of Van and Minnie Lucas Guion. She married
Winnis A. Becker, July 18, 1938 at Carlsbad, N.M. A resident of Great Bend since 1933, coming from Topeka, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Becker was a member of First United Methodist Church in Great Bend. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Gary Becker of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Bob Becker of Ponca City, Okla.; five grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Lester Guion, and one sister, Mildred Beye. Funeral will be at 1:30 Tuesday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Jana Baxter officiating. John Isaac Reed May 24, 1928, in Muleshoe, Texas. He died July 15, 1975. A resident of Larned since 1971, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Reed was a member of Assembly of God Church in Larned and was a longtime Sunday School teacher. Survivors include two sons, Luther Lee Reed of Jal, N.M., and Bennie Albert Reed of Elk City, Okla.; one daughter, Georgia Mae McMillion of Bozeman, Mont.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six brothers, Argule Fine, Lee Fine, Jay Fine, Lloyd Fine, Delbert Fine and Vancel Fine; one sister, Levern Francis Rust; one half-sister, Jo Beth Cagle; and two grandchildren, David Reed and Mary Jane Reed. Mrs. Burton was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Order of the Eastern Star, both in Great Bend. William O. Twitchell. He died April 2, 1962. A lifelong resident of Larned, she was a retired librarian. Mrs. Twitchell was a member of Presbyterian Church and charter and lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, both of Larned. Survivors include three sons, Joe William Twitchell and Charles 'Chuck' Walter Twitchell, both of Larned and Bill Lewis Twitchell of Garfield; one daughter, Gia Marie Lane of New Hampshire; one sister, Hazel Seaman of Oceanside, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Family memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at New Covenant Church in Larned, with Elder Allan Martin officiating. Private family burial was today at Pawnee Rock Cemetery. Russell was a member of United Methodist Church, 33rd degree Mason, OES and past school board member, all of Trousdale. Survivors include one son, Clinton E. Russell of Belpre; two daughters, Juanita Lowe of Manhattan and Arlene Rapp of Orange, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lloyd Russell and Willmer Russell; and two sisters, Gertrude O¹Bannon and Nola Russell. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev.
