Frieda Packard 1907-2002
OTIS - Frieda Packard, 95, died Feb. 12 at Hoisington Rehabilitation Center in Hoisington. She was born Jan. 8, 1907, in Russia, the daughter of George and Katherine Decker. She married Clarence Edward Packard Oct. 22, 1922, in Great Bend. He died Sept. 16, 1961. A long time resident of Rush County, retiring to Otis in 1972, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Packard was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church Women and Senior Citizens Club, all of Otis. Survivors include one son, Quentin Packard of Otis. She was preceded in death by one brother, Jacob Decker; and one sister, Bertha Fink. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at La Crosse City Cemetery, with the Rev. Jeri Dexheimer officiating. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Memorials are suggested to the donoris choice, in care of the funeral home. Feb. 12, 2002

Ernestine Briles Hayes 1916-2002
STAFFORD - Ernestine Briles Hayes, 85, died Feb. 11 at Hospice Residential Care Center in Hutchinson. She was born Sept. 10, 1916, in Stafford, the daughter of E.A. and Ada Cole Briles. She was a 1933 graduate of Stafford High School. She married Earl Hayes Nov. 1, 1936, in Stafford. A lifelong resident of Stafford, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Hayes was a member of United Methodist Church, past president of United Methodist Women, past director of Methodist Youth Fellowship, Chapter BK PEO, Drama Guild and Stafford Players, all of Stafford. She was an inductee in to the Association of Kansas Theatres Hall of Fame, treasurer of Agriculture Council of America, past president of Wheatbelt Council of the Girl Scouts of America, officer of Kansas Mental Health Association and was recognized as woman of the year by Business and Professional Women. Survivors include her husband of the home; two daughters, Rebecca Welsh of Hutchinson and Melissa Hayes of Oakland, Calif.; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Michael Hayes; and one sister, Jeanne Darnall. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Kasey Crosby officiating. Burial will be at Stafford Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Friday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford, with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Ernestine Hayes Memorial Fund or the donoris choice, both in care of the funeral chapel. Aimee Guinotte Russell Gerhardt 1929-2002
PRAIRIE VILLAGE - Aimee Guinotte Russell Gerhardt, 73, died Feb. 12 at St. Luke's Hospital. She was born Feb. 9, 1929, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of James G. and Mary Harris Guinotte. She was a 1950 graduate of the University of Kansas. She married Dr. Marion F. Russell Jr. in June 1951 in Great Bend. He died in 1962. She married Donald C. Gerhardt in 1971. A resident of Prairie Village, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Gerhardt was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, Botar Organization, Junior League of Kansas City and Rockhill Tennis Club. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Marion F. Russell III; four daughters, Lucy Neal, Molly Harsh, Aimee Gerhardt Haugan and Lori Sachs; one brother, James E. Guinotte; two sisters, Mary Harris Francis and Maude Susan Strawn; and 15 grandchildren. Funeral was today at St. Annis Church in Prairie Village. Cremation will follow. Memorials are suggested to Little Sisters of the Poor, in care of Muehlebach Funeral Home in Kansas City, Mo. Feb. 15, 2002

Duane Compton 1926-2002
WICHITA - Duane Compton, 75, died Feb. 14. He was born May 12, 1926, in Pawnee County, the son of William Thorn and Ruby Leone Mills Compton. He married Jane Wilson Aug. 12, 1952, in Larned. A resident of Wichita, coming from Larned, he was retired from the Wichita Board of Education as director of physical education and Adams Elementary School Physical Education Teacher. He was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, David Compton of Houston, Texas, and Douglas Compton of Seattle, Wash.; two brothers, Stuart Compton of Wichita and Joseph Compton of Los Angeles, Calif.; and four grandchildren. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Central Community Church in Wichita. Friends may call from 7-8 tonight at Watson Funeral Home in Wichita. Memorials are suggested to Hospice Care of Kansas in Wichita and ALS Association, Keith Worthington Chapter, both in care of the funeral home. Feb. 15, 2002

Georgia Elsie Roberts 1914-2002
Georgia Elsie Roberts, 87, of Great Bend, died Feb. 14 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Dec. 27, 1914, in Larned, the daughter of John William and Salina Anna Ferree Grizzle. She married Theron James Roberts Sr. April 10, 1938, in Hays. He died Feb. 22, 1969. A resident of Great Bend since 1929, coming from Larned, she worked as a sales clerk for Wileyis Department Store and J.C. Penneyis. Mrs. Roberts was a member of Central Baptist Church and Central Kansas Medical Center Auxiliary, both in Great Bend. Survivors include three sons, T.J. Roberts Jr. of Ellinwood, Max Roberts of Great Bend and Jerry Roberts of Mission Viejo, Calif.; two daughters, Marsha Gustin of Rose Hill and Georgiana Yasko of Orlando, Fla.; one sister, Maxine C. Rogers of Great Bend; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Wesley and Mahala Slingerland. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend, with the Rev. Dr. Gordon E. Rhodes officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend cemetery in Great Bend. Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, from 1-9 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday, all at the funeral home. Juanita G. Wolf 1920-2002
LARNED - Juanita G. Wolf, 81, died Feb. 14 at the Good Samaritan Center in Dodge City. She was born Nov. 29, 1920, at Ringwood, Okla., the daughter of David and Aseneth Nellie Mae Fillman Henning. She married Peter J. Wolf, June 20, 1955 at Kansas City, Mo. He died July 13, 1992. A resident of Dodge City since 1955, she was a bookkeeper for Trinity Methodist Hospital and Ford County Courthouse. Mrs. Wolf was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church and Keen Agers, both in Belpre, and Sacred Heart Cathedral in Dodge City. Survivors include two sons, Leroy Wilson of Littlefield, Texas, and Gail Wilson of Littleton Colo.; two daughters, Rebecca Martinez of Dodge City, and Patricia Hedemark of Martinez, Calif.; two step-daughters, Mary Edna Delozier of Dodge City, and Theresa McCarthy of Arizona; one brother, David Lyle Henning of Chappell, Neb.; one sister, Betty Schartz of Belpre; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; 23 step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five stepsons, and one great-grandchild. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church in Belpre, with the Rev. Dennis Reed officiating. Burial will be at Belpre Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Dodge City Good Samaritan Activity Department, or the American Cancer Society, both in care of the mortuary. Feb. 17, 2002

William A. Gerritzen 1976-2002
HOISINGTON - William A. Gerritzen, 25, died Feb. 14 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born Sept. 15, 1976 in Great Bend, the son of Robert L. and Erma J. Heine Gerritzen. He was a 1995 graduate of Hoisington High School and a 1997 graduate of Barton County Community College. A resident of Hoisington, he was a draftsman for Great Bend Industries in Great Bend. Gerritzen was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hoisington. Survivors include his parents of Hoisington; and one brother, Matthew C. Gerritzen of Hoisington. Family rosary was held Saturday. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. tonight at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Pascal Klien officiating. Burial will be at St. John cemetery in Hoisington. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hoisington EMS or Hoisington Fire Department, both in care of the funeral home. Feb. 17, 2002

Frances M. Miller 1918-2002
LYONS - Frances M. Miller, 83, died Feb. 15 at Hutchinson Hospital in Hutchinson. She was born June 16, 1918, at Mt. Clemour, Mich., the daughter of Frank Raymond and Leah Nelda Forgue Wheeler. She was a graduate of Hutchinson High School. She married James Lansing Miller, Aug. 10. 1936, in Chase. He died June 5, 1978. A resident of Lyons since 1975 coming from Chase, she was a retired nurses aide, having worked at Lyons District Hospital and the rest homes in Lyons. Survivors include two sons, Jim E. Miller of Lyons, and Jerry R. Miller of Salina; two sisters, Noreen Shell of Okalahoma City, Okla., and Betty Keel of Tulsa, Okla.; seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Wheeler, and Albert Wheeler. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons, with Johnnie Hardie officiating. Burial will be at Lyons Municipal cemetery in Lyons. There is no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Lyons Senior Center, in care of the funeral home. Feb. 17, 2002

Wilma L. Rathbun 1910-2002
ELLSWORTH - Wilma L. Rathbun, 91, died Feb. 16 at Good Samaritan Retirement Village in Ellsworth. She was born July 9, 1910, in Nickerson, the daughter of Henry Fred and Alice D. Campbell Hoth. She married Merle Rathbun Oct. 4, 1934, in Hutchinson. A resident of Ellsworth and Lorraine communities most of her life, she was a homemaker and teacher. Mrs. Rathbun was a member of First Presbyterian Church, AAUW, Willing Workers, Hospital Auxiliary and Historical Society, all of Ellsworth, Kansas State Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Ted Rathbun of Columbia, S.C.; one daughter, Joyce Besthorn of Claflin; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Parsons Funeral Home in Ellsworth, with the Rev. Donald Ray officiating. Burial will be at Ellsworth Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. until service time Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church or Good Samaritan Retirement Village, both in care of the funeral home. Feb. 18, 2002

Pauline C. Nienke 1909-2002
ELLSWORTH - Pauline C. Nienke, 92, died Feb. 16 at Ellsworth County Medical Center in Ellsworth. She was born Feb. 22, 1909, in Ellsworth County, the daughter of Frank and Lena Korzuszkiewicz Zorn. She married Reinhart Nienke June 21, 1927, in Lyons. He died in 1986. A lifelong resident of Ellsworth, she was a farm wife and retired nursesi aide for Ellsworth Hospital. Mrs. Nienke was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Senior Citizens Quilting Group and Lutheran Women's Missionary League, all of Ellsworth. Survivors include one son, Robert Nienke of Salina; one brother, August Zorn of Ellsworth; five sisters, Ardella Zorn of Mesa, Ariz., Catherine Zorn of Ellsworth, Mary Mog of Ellinwood, Mathilda Brown of Larned and Eleanor Bradford of Wichita; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Richard Andrus officiating. Burial will be at Ellsworth Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday at Parsons Funeral Home in Ellsworth and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday, at the church. Leo Victor Mai 1917-2002
RUSSELL - Leo Victor Mai, 85, died Feb. 16 at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell. He was born Jan. 14, 1917, in Russell, the son of John Jacob and Katherine Maier Mai. A lifelong resident of the Russell area, he was a retired farmer and stockman. Mai was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Russell. Survivors include four brothers, Walter Mai of Great Bend, Clarence Mai of Wichita, Earlin Mai and Howard Mai, both of Russell; and two sisters, Viola Bender of Russell and Willemetta Deutsch of Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Pohlmanis Mortuary Memorial Chapel in Russell. Burial will be at Russell City cemetery in Russell. Friends may call until 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the church or Wheatland Nursing Center, both in care of the mortuary. Alvena L. Heyen 1921-2002
HUTCHINSON - Alvena L. Heyen, 80, died Feb. 18 at Hutchinson Hospital. She was born June 23, 1921, in Hudson, the daughter of Frederic Wilhelm and Minnie Nolte Bunselmeyer. She married Leonard H. Heyen Dec. 23, 1946, in Stafford. He died June 24, 2001. A resident of Hutchinson since 1955, she was a babysitter and house cleaner. Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Heyen of Hutchinson; and one brother, Vernon Bunselmeyer of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by one brother, Leonard Bunselmeyer; and one sister, Ruth Heyen. Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Fedlhut cemetery in rural Stafford, with the Rev. Karen Ault officiating. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today at Minnis Chapel in Stafford, with family receiving friends from 1-3 p.m. today. Ralph F. Snowbarger 1911-2002
SYLVIA - Ralph F. Snowbarger, 90, died Feb. 17 at Hospice Residential Care Center in Hutchinson. He was born June 27, 1911, in Sylvia, the son of George and Clara Yust Snowbarger. He married Wilma O. Shull March 9, 1938, in Sylvia. She died March 24, 1996. He married Elsie Marie Reimer June 29, 1997, in Sylvia. A lifelong resident of Sylvia, he was a farmer. Snowbarger was a member of Pleasant Hill Church of the Nazarene in Sylvia. Survivors include his wife of the home; one brother, Everett Snowbarger of Hutchinson; and one sister, Mary Wyer of Hutchinson. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. John Miller officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park cemetery in Hutchinson. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Thursday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford. Francis Frederick Woleslagel 1913-2002
LYONS - Francis Frederick Woleslagel, 88, died Feb. 18 at Sandstone Heights Nursing Home in Little River. He was born Nov. 15, 1913, in Montrose, Colo., the son of Jason and Edna Spencer Woleslagel. He graduated from Sterling High School and from the University of Kansas, where he received a doctorate degree in law. He married Jean Hutton Smith May 14, 1942, in Chicago, Ill. She died Aug. 7, 1998. A longtime resident of Lyons, he was an attorney and retired 20th District judge serving from 1959 to 1980. Woleslagel was a member of the Presbyterian church, American Bar Association, Kansas Bar Association, National Conference of Trial Judges, former editor of the Judges Journal magazine, and former editor of the "Oyez Oyez" American Bar Association Publication. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include one son, Jon Woleslagel of Rome, N.Y.; one daughter, Jane Woleslagel of Lyons; and one sister, Vorine Charter of Sterling. He was preceded in death by one brother, Collins Leroy Woleslagel; and one sister, Helen Woleslagel. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons, officiated by the Rev. Al Spotts. Burial will be at Sterling Community cemetery in Sterling. Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Casket will be closed. Memorials are suggested to Lyons Public Library or the donoris choice, both in care of the funeral home. Feb. 19, 2002
