Ethel Louella Brooks 1912-2001
LARNED - Ethel Louella Schultz Marley Brooks, 89,
died Dec. 7 in Noble, Okla. She was born May 22, 1912, in Barton County, the
daughter of Edward J. and Maggie Miller Schultz. A resident of
Noble, coming from Larned, she was a homemaker and worked for Humburg Store
in Larned.
She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Norman, Okla.
Survivors include three sons, Wayne Marley, Bill Marley and John 'Bud'
Marley, all of Norman; one brother, Vernon Schultz of Larned; two sisters,
Elnora Jenks of Larned and Gladys Williamson of Lorraine; 14 grandchildren;
and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned, with
the Rev. Ron Day officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may
call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday,
all at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the
mortuary.

J. Edgar Hallman 1927-2001
OVERLAND PARK - J. Edgar Hallman, 74, died Dec. 12 at the Forum in Overland
Park. He was born Aug. 29, 1927, in Hudson, the son of Hugo and Hattie
Hallman. He attended Hutchinson Community College, University of New Mexico
and Pittsburg State University, receiving a bachelor's and master's degree
in industrial arts. He married
Ernestene Hallman in 1959. A resident of
Overland Park, coming from Hudson, Virgil, Junction City and Shawnee, he
worked as a school teacher for 39 years.
Hallman was a member of The Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village,
Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Phi Delta Kappa, Kansas State Historical Society,
Ionic Lodge 252 in Stafford, Abdulla Shrine, Scottish Rite, AARP and
National Education Association. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Eric Hallman; one daughter,
Elisha Churchhill; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one
brother, Victor Hallman; and one sister, Virginia Anderson.
Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. today at Trinity cemetery in Hudson.
Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland
Park Chapel in Overland Park. Friends may call after the memorial service at
the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the
funeral chapel.

Alice M. Berglund 1918-2001
LARNED - Alice M. Berglund, 83, died Dec. 12 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Joseph Campus in Larned. She was born March 1, 1918, in Pawnee
County, the daughter of John E. and Emma J. Strader Meeker. She married
Leonard H. Berglund. He died Aug. 16, 1978. A lifelong resident of Larned,
she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Berglund was a member of United Methodist Church in Larned.
Survivors include four sisters, Florence Barton of Claremore, Okla., Clara
Porter of Lafayette, Calif., Betty Balke of Rockford, Ill., and Dorothy
Merritt of Marysville, Calif. She was preceded in death by one son, LeRoy
Berglund; one daughter, Connie Quimby; one brother, Frank Meeker; and four
sisters, Margaret Delp, Mary Bell Springer, Mildred Todd and Neva Keller.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned,
with the Rev. Charles Grant officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery.
Friends may call until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9
a.m. until service time Saturday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are

Douglas A. Yost 1950-2001
GORHAM - Douglas A. Yost, 51, died Dec. 11 at Hays Medical Center in Hays.
He was born Jan. 29, 1950, in Russell, the son of Alois J. 'Lum' and
Florence Jacobs Yost. He was a 1968 graduate of Gorham Rural High School in
Gorham and a 1970 graduate of Salina Vo-Tech School in Salina. A resident of
Gorham, coming from Fairport, he worked as an auto mechanic and worked in
the oil fields.
Yost was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and 30
year member of Gorham Fire Department, all of Gorham.
Survivors include his parents of the home; three brothers, Richard Yost of
Hays, Jack Yost of Russell and Chuck Yost of Gorham; and one sister, Marcia
Blundon of Russell.
Vigil service followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 7 p.m.
Friday at Cline's Mortuary in Victoria. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday
at the church, with the Rev. Charles L. Steier and Sister Mary Jo Thummel
officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's cemetery in Gorham. Friends may
call from 3-9 p.m. Friday and from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Saturday, all at the

Berneda Leatherman Magie 1931-2001
ST. JOHN - Berneda Leatherman Magie, 70, died Dec. 8 at Integrated Health
Services, Blanco Vista in San Antonio, Texas. She was born July 22, 1931, in
St. John, the daughter of Chester and Pansy Leatherman. A resident of San
Antonio, coming from St. John, she worked as a licensed practical nurse at
ASCS in St. John and Great Bend.
She was a member of Assembly of God Church in Fort Collins, Colo., and
Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Bohall of St. Joseph, Mo., and Tim Bohall
of San Antonio; one daughter, Pam Caylor of Las Vegas, Nev.; five sisters,
Donna Faye Smith and Connie Mawhirter, both of St. John, Betty Barker of
Pratt, Bernice Shrum of Hutchinson and Joyce Rowley of Dodge City; and 10
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Danny Lee Bohall; and
one sister, Darlene Bowden.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in St.
John, with the Revs. Harlan Rittgers and Larry Bohall officiating. Burial
will be at Rose Valley cemetery in rural Stafford County. Friends may call
from 8 a.m. until service time Thursday at the Methodist church. Memorials
are suggested to Parkinson's Disease Research, in care of Minnis Chapel in
St. John.

Alvina Marie Cole 1928-2001
McCRACKEN - Alvina Marie Cole, 73, died Dec. 8 at Hays Medical Center, St.
Anthony's Campus in Hays. She was born June 13, 1928, in Ness County, the
daughter of Frank and Clara Marak McCormick. She married
Doyle F. Foster
Aug. 21, 1950, in La Crosse. He died Jan. 15, 1979. She married
William D.
Cole July 30, 1991, in McCracken. A near lifelong resident of McCracken, she
worked as a bookkeeper for Western Light Company and for Farmers Co-op in
McCracken and La Crosse.
Mrs. Cole was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in McCracken.
Survivors include her husband of the home; four sons, Robert Foster of
McCracken, Kenneth Foster of Las Vegas, Nev., Francis 'Frank' Foster of
Florissant, Colo. and Frederick Foster of Reggio Colbaria, Italy; one
stepson, James Cole of Long Island; four stepdaughters, Colette Traxler of
Bazine, Susan Lilly of Mentor, Patricia Bruntz of Valley Center and Mary
Cole of Overland Park; one brother, Sylvester 'Bet' McCormick of McCracken;
one sister, Jean Schutte of McCracken; one granddaughter; and 10
stepgrandchildren.
Memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev.
Benjamin Martin officiating. Friends may call from 5:30 until service time
Thursday at the church. The body has been donated to the University of

Lessie Whala Blair 1901-2001
Lessie Whala Blair, 100, of Great Bend, died Dec. 9 at Central Kansas
Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Oct. 12, 1901,
in Myrtis, La., the daughter of John B. and Lilla L. Ray Bolt. She married
William M. Whala July 27, 1921, in Hayworth, Okla. He died Dec. 22, 1954.
She married
A.H. Blair June 5, 1958, in Oklahoma City, Okla. He died Jan.
22, 1981. A resident of Great Bend for the last two years, coming from
Oklahoma City, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Blair was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Great Bend.
Survivors include one son, Jesse Therston Whala of Denver, Colo.; three
stepsons, C.M. Blair of Houston, Texas, Vance Blair of Oklahoma City and
Robert Blair of Midwest City, Okla.; two daughters, Naomi Janell Williams of
Oklahoma City and Wilda Merten of Great Bend; two step-daughters, Raynelle
Bristow of Edmond, Okla. and Joann Ozment of Midwest City; one brother,
Luther M. Bolt of Miami, Okla.; one sister, Johnnie M. Block of Fort Smith,
Ark.; seven grandchildren; 14 stepgrandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren;
many stepgreat-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by one daughter, Ruth Oleene Reiser; two stepsons, Lavoy
Blair and Ronald Blair; and five sisters.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in
Great Bend, with the Rev. Dr. Doyle Smith officiating. Burial will be at 3
p.m. Friday at Memorial Park cemetery in Oklahoma City. Friends may call

Carlena Elizabeth Joiner 1919-2001
ELLINWOOD - Carlena Elizabeth Joiner, 82, died Dec. 9 at Woodhaven Care
Center in Ellinwood. She was born May 28, 1919, in Crossville, Ill. the
daughter of William Franklin and Ina Stanley Robinson York. She married
Andrew Jackson Joiner Aug. 19, 1952, in Ardmore, Okla. He died Sept. 11,
1986. A resident of Ellinwood since 1963, coming from Crossville, she was a
retired secretary and agent, working for Chrysler Credit Corp. and Goebel
Furniture Company, both in Evansville, Ind., National Bank of Carmi, Ill.
and Jensen Associates, Incorporated in Ellinwood.
Mrs. Joiner was a member of Eastern Star Chapter 487 and American Legion
Auxiliary, both of Ellinwood.
Survivors include one daughter, Vickie Andre of Phoenix, Ariz.; one stepson,
Jack Joiner of Great Bend; and two stepdaughters, Belva Fortner of Florida
and Maxine Andre of Texas; and three grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Kimple Inc. Funeral Home in
Ellinwood, with the Rev. Larry Young officiating. Burial will be at
Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call until 8

Christine Schmidt 1905-2001
RUSSELL - Christine Schmidt, 96, died Dec. 9 at Russell Regional Hospital in
Russell. She was born Aug. 30, 1905, in Lawe, Russia, the daughter of Conrad
and Katherine Fuchs Grasmick. She married
Frederick F. Schmidt Dec. 5, 1926,
in Russell. He died Dec. 3, 1972. A resident of Russell since 1979, coming
from a farm near Russell, Rocky Ford, Colo. and Ordway, Colo., she was a
homemaker.
Mrs. Schmidt was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Elizabeth Circle,
Church Quilting Group and grey lady at Russell Hospital for 27 years, all in
Russell.
Survivors include four sons, Paul Schmidt of Andale, Harold Schmidt of
Sherwood, Ore., Fred Schmidt of Ft. Collins, Colo. and Sam Schmidt of
Russell; one brother, Jack Grasmick of Cannon City, Colo.; one sister,
Louise Plake of San Rafael, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 11
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sons, John Schmidt,
Richard Schmidt and James Schmidt; and four brothers, Bill Grasmick, Conrad
Grasmick, Veldon Grasmick and Sam Grasmick.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Revs. Harlan
Kaden and Henry Hartman officiating. Burial will be at St. John Lutheran
Cemetery in Russell. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at
Pohlman's Mortuary in Russell and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday,
