Jesse 'Glen' Burris 1916-2001
ARKANSAS CITY - Jesse "Glen" Burris, 85, died Dec. 24 at Southern Central
Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City. He was born March 3, 1916,
in Great Bend, the son of Emory Blaine and Katie Brocher Burris. He was a
graduate of Great Bend High School. He married
Joyce Neely May 9, 1947, in
Great Bend. A resident of Arkansas City since 1969, coming from Great Bend
and Wichita, he worked in the oilfield and for Arkansas City, retiring in
1982.
Burris was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Veterans of Foreign
Wars, both of Arkansas City. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in World
War II.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Michael Burris of Baxter
Springs; one sister, Doris Amerine of Great Bend; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Michele Hestand; and one brother,
Leon Burris.
Memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hawks Memorial Chapel
in Arkansas City. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday at the
funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral

Carole Ann Gabel 1941-2001
ELLIS - Carole Ann Gabel, 60, died Dec. 23 in Ellis. She was born April 8,
1941, in Hays, the daughter of B. Howard and Bernice Miller Baugher. She
married Robert Gabel Nov. 4, 1961, in Ellis. A lifetime resident of Ellis,
she was employed by Wheelchairs of Kansas in Ellis.
Mrs. Gabel was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ellis.
Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Rodney Gabel of Salina;
two daughters, Tamera Schoenthaler of Fountain Hills, Ariz., and Rhonda
Wolf of Ellis; her father of Battle Creek, Mich.; one brother, Keith
Baugher of Ellsworth; three sisters, Janice Grauer of Wilson, Nancy
Sullivan of Battle Creek and Linda Andrade of Liberal; and six
grandchildren.
Rosary will be at 7 tonight at the church. Funeral will be at 10 a.m.
Thursday at the church with the Rev. Kevin Weber officiating. Burial will
be at St. Mary's Church cemetery in Ellis. Friends may call from 2-4:30
p.m. today at Wasinger Funeral Chapel in Ellis, from 5:30-8 p.m. today at
the church, and from 9-9:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials

Mary Elizabeth Briggs Flick 1920-2001
PAWNEE ROCK - Mary Elizabeth Briggs Flick, 81, died Dec. 21 at Topeka. She
was born June 25, 1920, in Hutchinson, the daughter of John Horton and Meda
Gabrielson Briggs. She married
Thomas Alvin Flick Nov. 29, 1947, in
Hutchinson. He died Dec. 24, 1984. A resident of the Dover area, originally
coming from Pawnee Rock, she was a homemaker and schoolteacher at Pawnee
Rock and Kiowa.
Survivors include three sons, John Flick of Trousdale, Philip Flick of
Dover and Doug Flick of Great Bend; and six grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pawnee Rock United Methodist Church
in Pawnee Rock. Burial will be at Pawnee Rock Cemetery. Friends may call
from noon until service time Thursday at the church. Memorials are

Willard Dean Smrcka 1927-2001
TIMKEN - Willard Dean Smrcka, 74, died Dec. 21 at Via Christi Regional
Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born Feb. 9, 1927, at
Timken, the son of William and Katie Kraisinger Smrcka. He married
Ida Mary
Morrison Oct. 15, 1955, in La Crosse. A lifetime resident of Timken, he was
a stockman and farmer.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Vickie Tammen, of
Timken; and one granddaughter.
Private graveside services will be at Timken Bohemian cemetery in Timken.
Memorials are suggested to Timken Fire Department, in care of Beckwith
Mortuary Chapel in Larned.

Miles L. Honomichl 1932-2001
Miles L. Honomichl, 69 of Great Bend, died Dec. 21 at Via Christi Regional
Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born May 14, 1932 in
Ellsworth, the son of Carl Sr. and Rose Herber Honomichl. He married
Kathleen Mary Buffington Feb. 4, 1956, in Stillwell, Okla. A resident of
Great Bend since 1994, coming from Ellsworth, he was the buildings and
grounds superintendent at USD 418 in McPherson.
Honomichl was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend, AF&AM in
McPherson, Isis Shrine in Salina and Yorkrite in Hutchinson.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Gary Honomichl of
McPherson; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded
in death by one brother, Carl Honomichl Jr.
Funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Fryberger Mortuary Chapel in Great
Bend with the Rev. Hal Staats Jr. officiating. Burial will be at 11:45 a.m.
Thursday at Wilson City cemetery in Wilson. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m.
Wednesday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to American Heart
Association, in care of the mortuary.

Walter William Coldwater 1923-2001
ELLINWOOD - Walter William Coldwater, 78, died Dec. 23 at his home in
Ellinwood. He was born July 21, 1923, in Chase, the son of Walter William
Sr. and Jennie Gladys Caldwell Coldwater. He was a 1942 graduate of Chase
High School. He married
Pauline Blackburn March 10, 1947, in Great Bend. A
resident of Ellinwood, he retired in 1987 as part owner of J.W. Drilling of
Wichita and was a former production superintendent of Alpine Drilling.
Coldwater was a member of American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars
former commander, both of Ellinwood. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the
Pacific Theater, serving in the southern Philippines and the Western
Pacific where he was awarded the Bronze Star.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Danny Coldwater of
Hutchinson; three daughters, Sue Rohrig of Salina, and Diane Reser and
Cathy Ruppe, both of Ellinwood; one brother, Robert Coldwater of Chase; 12
grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kimple Funeral Chapel of
Ellinwood with the Rev. Andy Keltner officiating. Burial will be at
Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call from 3-5
today and from 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday, all at the funeral home.

Sean Paul Hayes 1973-2001
Sean Paul Hayes, 28 of Great Bend, died Dec. 21 at Via Christi Regional
Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born Nov. 12, 1973,
at Cavite, Philippines, the son of Joseph A. and Rizalina G. Guia Hayes. He
was a 1993 graduate of Great Bend High School. A resident of Great Bend for
most his life, he was a maintenance worker at McDonald's in Great Bend.
Survivors include his parents of Great Bend; and one sister, Kelly J. Hayes
of Great Bend.
Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bryant-Christians
Funeral Home with the Rev. Loyse Clay officiating. There is no visitation.
The body was cremated. Memorials are suggested to donor's choice, in care
of the funeral home.

Stanley J. Stegman 1952-2001
Stanley J. Stegman, 49 of Great Bend, died Dec. 22 in Great Bend. He was
born March 28, 1952, in Norton, the son of Felix and Elsie Jacobs Stegman.
He attended Hays High School. He married
Terry Ward Jan. 29, 1972, in Hays.
A resident of Great Bend, coming from Austin, Texas, he was a roofer for 20
years.
Stegman was a member of Cheyenne Bottoms Sportsman Club in Great Bend and
St. Joseph's Church in Hays.
Survivors include one son, Chris Stegman of Wamego; one daughter, Tina
Crispin of Goodland; his mother of Hays; seven brothers, Eldon Stegman of
Houston, Texas, Gregg Stegman of Humble, Texas, Brad Stegman and Bruce
Stegman, both of Great Bend, Wesley Stegman of Portland, Ore., Mark Stegman
of Hays and Brent Stegman of Olathe; six sisters, Sharon Rollins of King
George, Va., Shelly Harrell and Faye Wiesner, both of Hays, Pamela
Reitmeyer of Kansas City, Mo., Dorrine Wahlmeier of Wamego and Tracy
Augustine of Ellis; and three grandchildren.
Parish vigil will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Brock's North Hill Chapel in
Hays. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev.
Frank X. Grinko officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross cemetery in
Pfeifer. Friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, and from
8:30-9:45 a.m. Thursday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested

Alma R. Johnson 1914-2001
Alma R. Johnson, 87, of Great Bend, died Dec. 20 at Woodhaven Care Center
in Ellinwood. She was born May 18, 1914, in Hudson, the daughter of
Fredrick W. and Grace J. Meyerkorth Siefkes. She married
Herman R. Johnson
May 27, 1938, in Ellinwood. He died Dec. 24, 1972. A resident of Great Bend
for more than 30 years, she worked as a housekeeper for Central Kansas
Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend and Ellinwood District
Hospital in Ellinwood.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and Rebecca Lodge,
both in Great Bend.
Survivors include one son, Arlon R. Johnson of Goddard; three
grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by one daughter, Joyce Kober; one brother, Ralph A.
Siefkes; one sister, Doris M. Nettie-Jordan; and one grandson, Raymond
Kober.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Kimple Funeral Home Chapel in
Ellinwood, with the Rev. Larry Young officiating. Burial will be at
Lakin-Comanche District cemetery in Ellinwood. Friends may call from 3-7

William 'Neal' Holmes 1914-2001
CHASE - William "Neal" Holmes, 87, died Dec. 21 at Kiowa County Memorial
Hospital in Greensburg. He was born Jan. 26, 1914, in Hallawell, the son of
William and Ora Mae Parsons Holmes. He graduated from El Dorado High School
and attended college for two years. He married
Helen L. Prosser May 12,
1944, in Wichita. A resident of Chase since 1948, he was a retired oil
field worker.
Holmes was a member of Victory Church, 50 year member of Masonic Lodge,
past master of Masonic Lodge, past master of Boy Scouts for more than 50
years and past member of Chase Fire Department, all of Chase, and 50 year
member of Eastern Star of Lyons. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, JoAnn Strasters of
Aransas Pass, Texas; three brothers, Dale Holmes of Lockport, Ill., Ralph
Holmes of Albany, Ore., and Floyd Holmes of Denver, Colo.; four
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one
brother, Harold Holmes; and one sister, Loree Leach.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lyons Municipal Cemetery
in Lyons, with the Rev. Larry Weatherman officiating. Friends may call from
10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons. Memorials
