John A. Stetler 1928-2001
HOISINGTON -- John A. Stetler, 73, died Aug. 31 at Hutchinson Hospital. He
was born July 13, 1928, at Hoisington, the son of Fred and Frances Kohen
Stetler. He married
Alice Depperschmidt Jan. 4, 1949, at Sapulpa, Okla. A
lifetime resident of Hoisington, he was a cattleman, raised and owned
Thoroughbred horses and invested in the oil field.
Stetler was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Olmitz and Kansas
Livestock Association; and was a Golden Glove boxer.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Kevin L. Stetler of
Hoisington; one daughter, Kay Fitzimmons of Albert; one sister, Frieda Weber
of Liberty, Mo.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one
son, John Michael Stetler; two brothers, Charles Stetler and Roy 'Mutt'
Stetler; and one sister, Mildred Frazier.
Wake service will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, followed by a rosary at
Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m.
Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Ultan Murphy officiating. Burial will be
at Golden Belt cemetery in Barton County. Friends may call from 2-9 p.m.
today and from 1-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested
to the Hoisington High School Football Department or Kans for Kids, both in
care of the funeral home.

Joseph A. Harris Jr. 1924-2001
ST. JOHN -- Joseph A. Harris Jr., 77, died Aug. 31 at Pratt Regional Medical
Center in Pratt. He was born April 6, 1924, at Boydsville, Ohio, the son of
Joseph A. Sr. and Lillian F. Boring Harris. He married
Della Harris May 17,
1947, at Bridgeport, Ohio. A resident of St. John since 1971, he was a law
enforcement officer.
Harris was a member of Church of Christ and American Legion both in St.
John. He was a U.S. Army veteran, retiring in 1969 after 22 years,
including having served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Terry A. Harris of Liberal;
one daughter, Renny Neale Russell of Rohnert Park, Calif.; two brothers,
Charles Harris of Enola, Pa., and Richard Harris of Greenwell Springs, La.;
one sister, Ella June Church of Bannock, Ohio; two grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Sherry
Dawn Harlow.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Minnis Chapel in St. John, with the
Rev. Carl Feril officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at
Fairview Park in St. John. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Monday at the
chapel. Memorials are suggested to the church or Union Rescue Mission of
Wichita both in care of the funeral home.

William D. "Bill" Meljo 1936-2001
HOISINGTON - William D. "Bill" Meljo, 65, died Dec. 29 at Hutchinson
Hospital in Hutchinson. He was born March 20, 1936, in Turon, the son of
Harry A. and Elva Serviss Meljo. He was a 1954 graduate of Hoisington High
School. A resident of Hoisington, he was a retired pumper with NRCA in
McPherson.
Meljo was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church and Veteran of Foreign Wars
Post 7428, both of Hoisington. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include two daughters, Melinda Meljo of Springfield, Mo. and
Melissa Clark of Hoisington; his mother of Hoisington; one sister, Betty
Brack of Loveland, Colo.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by one sister, Delores Garth.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Garry
Dassow officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington cemetery with military
graveside rites performed by American Legion Post 286 and VFW Post 7428,
both of Hoisington. Friends may call from 1-5 p.m. today and Tuesday and
from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, all at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in
Hoisington, and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.

Paul H. Schneider 1923-2001
DODGE CITY - Paul H. Schneider, 78, died Dec. 29 at Western Plains Medical
Complex in Dodge City. He was born Feb. 3, 1923, in Hoisington, the son of
Henry and Christina Eichman Schneider. He married
Rena Horn Dec. 24, 1946.
A lifelong resident of Dodge City, he was a retired farmer.
Schneider was a member of the Lutheran church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Darrell Schneider of
Jetmore; one daughter, Paula F. Buchanan of Dodge City; and one sister,
Hilda Cheney of Hoisington. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Otto
Schneider and Emil Schneider; and two sisters, Genevie Sinclair and Elma
Hofferber.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in
Jetmore, with the Rev. Kirk Larson officiating. Burial will be at Hanston
Cemetery in Hanston. Friends may call from until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8
p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday, all at Beckwith
Funeral Home in Jetmore. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes

M. Bernice Peck 1910-2001
COLBY - M. Bernice Peck, 91, died Dec. 28 at Prairie Senior Living Center in
Colby. She was born Nov. 27, 1910, in Abilene, the daughter of Walter J. and
Mabel E. Heller Elliott. She married
Bruce E. Peck June 2, 1932, in Abilene.
He died Nov. 2, 1966. A resident of Colby since 1997, coming from Lindsborg,
she worked as a housemother for Lane Hart Hall at Bethany College in
Lindsborg.
Mrs. Peck was a member of First Baptist Church in Lindsborg.
Survivors include two daughters, Joyce A. Seyfert of Colby and Pamela J.
Forest of Overland Park; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, John L. Peck; two brothers, Wilford
Elliott and Wendell Elliott; and one granddaughter, Sarah M. Peck.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hays-Christians Funeral Home Chapel
in Lindsborg, with the Rev. John D. Peck officiating. Graveside service will
be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Abilene cemetery in Abilene. Friends may call
from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to First

Morris L. Johnson 1937-2001
PRATT - Morris L. Johnson, 64, died Dec. 27 at Pratt Regional Medical
Center in Pratt. He was born Dec. 6, 1937, at Hugoton, the son of Lenwood
M. and Jessie Mae Pope Johnson. A resident of Pratt, he was a retired
lumber sub-contractor.
Johnson was a member of Second Baptist Church in Pratt. He was a veteran of
U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include five sons, Paul Johnson and Kenny Murphy, both of
Albuquerque, N.M., Duncan Murphy and Rodney Patterson, both of Lancaster,
Texas, and Michael Patterson of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Bridgett
Fulton and Penny Murphy, both of Albuquerque, N.M.; his father of Pratt;
five brothers, Carl Johnson of San Diego, Calif., Perry Johnson of Pratt,
Tim Johnson of Colorado City, Colo., Melvin Johnson and Ronald Johnson both
of Aurora, Colo.; three sisters, Edith Smith and Joyce Johnson, both of
Pratt, and Janice Turner of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; and
eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl
Johnson and Virgil Johnson; and one sister, Ramona Snowden.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Larrison Mortuary in Pratt,
with the Rev. Marion Crockett and Jim Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be
at Greenlawn cemetery in Pratt. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today at the

Gail Florence Tucker 1912-2001
STAFFORD - Gail Florence Tucker, 89, died Dec. 28 at Stafford District
Hospital in Stafford. She was born April 13, 1912, at Alden, the daughter
of Frank H. and Vera Vincent Walker. She was a 1930 graduate Englewood High
School, and attended nurses training at St. Anthony Hospital in Dodge City.
She married
Elmer Russell Tucker Sept. 20, 1931, in Englewood. He died
April 26, 1975. A resident of Stafford since 1938, she was owner and
operator of Stafford Flower Shop.
Mrs. Tucker was a member of Stafford United Methodist Church, past
president of United Methodist Women, a Sunday school teacher, member of the
Business and Professional Women, Drama Guild and was a worthy matron of the
Vashti Chapter Order of the Eastren Star, all of Stafford.
Survivors include three sons, Gene Tucker of Stafford, Richard Tucker of
Des Moines, Iowa, and Don Tucker of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; one brother,
George Walker of Salem, Ore.; two sisters, Berna Howry of Dallas, Ore., and
Phyllis Blankenship of Front Royal, Va.; eight grandchildren; 16
great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford with the
Rev. Kasey Crosby officiating. Burial will be at the Stafford Cemetery.
Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel. Memorials are
suggested to the Stafford District Hospital, in care of the chapel.

James H. Jacob 1934-2001
MACKSVILLE - James H. Jacob, 67, died Dec. 26 at his home in Macksville. He
was born June 22, 1934, at Racine, Wis., the son of Harry and Elsbeth
Peters Jacob. He married
Nora Estelle Longhurst May 16, 1953, at Oak Creek,
Wis. She died September, 1970. A resident of Macksville since 1994, coming
from Racine, he was a pressman for a publishing company.
He was a member of the GCIU of Racine.
Survivors include three daughters, Susan Sayre of Racine, Sally A. Buckman
of Macksville and Sandra Yerkes of Oak Creek; his mother of Lantana, Fla.;
one brother, Norman Jacob of Lantana; four grandchildren; three
step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by one son, James T. Jacob.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Draeger-Langendorf Funeral Home in
Racine. Burial will be at Forest Hill Memorial Park cemetery in Oak Creek.
Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials

Elizabeth R. 'Betty' Shrader 1913-2001
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Elizabeth R. "Betty" Shrader, 88, died Dec. 20. She
was born July 15, 1913, at Wheeling, W.Va., the daughter of George J. and
Clara West Rogers. She attended Columbus School for Girls, Wells College,
and graduated from Wichita State University with a B.A. in education. She
married Morton Gerald "Jerry" Shrader Jan. 29, 1939, in Wichita. He died
March, 1986. She was a resident of Virginia Beach since 1996, coming from
Dexter, Mulvane and Great Bend.
Mrs. Shrader was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Great Bend. An
active member of the Altar Guild, she also served on the vestry, was twice
a diocesan delegate to the national convention and was a co-director of
PECUSA church camp near Stockton for several years. She was also a member
of Daughters of the American Revolution.
Survivors include one son, Cmdr. Lee T. "Ted" Shrader of Virginia Beach;
two daughters, Joanna S. Panning of Prospect, Ky., and Frances W. Shrader
of Battle Creek, Mich.; one brother; two sisters; five grandchildren; and
one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by one brother who was killed
in action during World War II.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at
Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach, with the Revs. Bill Starkey
and John Baldwin officiating. Burial will be at Dexter. Memorial
contributions may be made to Emmanuel Church (Liturgical Commission),
PECUSA Conference Center or the American Diabetes Association, in care of
Cremation Society of Virginia, Virginia Beach. The family respectfully
requests no flowers.

Evea Jane Sigle 1922-2001
LURAY - Evea Jane Sigle, 79, died Dec. 26 at her home in rural Luray. She
was born Sept. 4, 1922, in Osborne County, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Applegate. She married
Ricahrd Sigle. He died in Oct. 1991. A lifelong
resident of Luray, she was a retired 5th grade teacher at Osborne Elementary
School in Osborne.
Mrs. Sigle was a member of United Methodist Church, Centennial Belles, Delta
Kappa Gamma and Osborne County Historicial Society, adult member of FCA, and
Chyenne cemetery board member all of Osborne County.
Survivors include four sons, Arris Sigle of Luray, Larry Sigle of Pretty
Prarie, Scott Sigle of Osborne and Garry Sigle of Riley; one daughter, Donna
Bayes of Salina; one sister, Joyce Williams of Johnstown, Colo.; and nine
grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Gary Davison
officiating. Burial will be at Cheyenne cemetery in rural Luray. Friends may
call from 2-8 p.m. today at Clark-Gashaw Mortuary Chapel in Osborne.
Memorials are suggested to Osborne County Memorial Hospital or Osborne
Chapter of FCA, both in care of the mortuary.
