Nellie Marie Kirby 1907-2001
LARNED - Nellie Marie Kirby, 93, died Sept. 2 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Sept. 30, 1907, in
Bennington, the daughter of Vearney Raymond and Elsie Marie Nelson Boster.
She was a 1926 graduate of Larned High School. She married Frank Lonis
Kirby Sept. 3, 1929, in Coldwater. He died March 9, 1981. A resident of
Pawnee County since 1916, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Kirby was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Women,
Ash Valley Sunflower Club and CICFCE Homemakers Unit, all of Larned.
Survivors include two sons, Dean Rollin Kirby of Overland Park and James
Blair Kirby of Larned; six grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren; and six step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by one brother, Darrell Wayne Boster.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Jim
Hawthorne officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends may call
until 8 tonight at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. Memorials are suggested
to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Sept. 4, 2001

Mildred M. Peak 1909-2001
Mildred M. Peak, 92, of Great Bend, died Aug. 31 at her home. She was born
July 1, 1909, in Hutchinson, the daughter of John and Susie Cummins Byrnes.
She was a graduate of St. Teresa High School. She married Roy E. Peak in
Hutchinson. A resident of Great Bend since 1978, coming from Larned, she
worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as an operator.
Mrs. Peak was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, China Dolls and
Garden Club, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include her husband of the home; and one daughter, Vickie Jan
Peak of Great Bend. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert Kent
Peak; and one brother, Floyd Byrnes.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Teresa Catholic Church in
Hutchinson, with the Rev. Richard Stuchlik officiating. Burial will be at
Memorial Park cemetery in Hutchinson. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m.
Tuesday at Johnson and Sons Funeral Home in Hutchinson. Memorials are
suggested to St. Teresa Catholic Church or St. Patrick Catholic Church,
both in care of the funeral home.

Verne A. Freeburg 1915-2001
Verne A. Freeburg, 85, of Great Bend, died Sept. 2 at Integrated Health
Services in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 16, 1915, in McPherson, the son
of David E. and Agnes Sjogren Freeburg. He married Laura Mae Unruh Oct. 23,
1940, in Pawnee Rock. A resident of Great Bend, coming from Pawnee Rock, he
was a retired farmer.
Freeburg was a member of Bergthal Mennonite Church in Pawnee Rock.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Sandra B. Darcy of
Great Bend and Patricia J. Hanken of Holyrood; two sisters, Frances
McDonald of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Mildred Myers of Pasadena, Texas; four
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two
brothers, Milton Freeburg and John Freeburg.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home Chapel
in Great Bend, with the Rev. Muriel T. Stackley officiating. Burial will be
at Mennonite Memorial cemetery in Pawnee Rock. Friends may call until 9
tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church or
Mennonite Central Committee, both in care of the funeral home.

Robert J. Blackwell 1947-2001
LARNED - Robert J. Blackwell, 53, died Sept. 2 at his residence in Larned.
He was born Sept. 13, 1947, in Rocky Mount, N.C., the son of Merle J. and
Alta May Halderman Blackwell. He married Juanita Kirkland Aug. 20, 1980, in
Alva, Okla. A lifelong resident of Larned, he was an electrical line crew
groundsman for the city of Larned.
Blackwell was a member of First Christian Church of Pawnee Rock, Fort
Larned Arms Association of Larned and National Rifle Association.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Billy Kirkland of
McComb, Miss., Johnny Rogers of Indiana and Robert J. Blackwell Jr. of
Larned; three daughters, LaDonna Kirkland of Madison, Miss., Rebecca Wilder
of Garfield and Kathy Rogers of Pawnee Rock; one brother, Steve Blackwell
of Pratt; one sister, Rebecca Bettes of Pratt; 10 grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned,
with the Rev. Don Paden officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery.
Friends may call until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9
a.m. until service time Wednesday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are
suggested to American Diabetes Association, in care of the mortuary.

James A. Welch 1915-2001
James A. Welch, 86, of Great Bend, died Sept. 2 at his home. He was born
May 12, 1915, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of James Chiplin and Sarah
Myrtle Fisher Welch. He married Olga Pomrenke Sept. 24, 1947, in Great
Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1922, coming from Kansas City, he was
owner/operator of Jim's Skelly Service.
Welch was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Knights of
Columbus, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eagles Lodge and
council leader of Boy Scout Troop 177, all of Great Bend. He was a U.S.
Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Jim Welch and David
Welch, both of Great Bend, and Paul Welch of Pueblo West, Colo.; one
daughter, Kathy Welch Porter of Topeka; one sister, Mary Alice Lang of
Hoisington; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home
in Great Bend, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary. Funeral will be at
9 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, all
at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Golden Belt Home Health and
Hospice of Great Bend or American Cancer Society, both in care of the
funeral home.

Arthur Robert Merten 1912-2001
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Arthur Robert Merten, 89, died Sept. 2 at
Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs. He was born March 9, 1912, in Barton
County, the son of Frank and Matilda Booth Merten. He married Dorothy Iona
Carmichael March 9, 1932, in Great Bend. A resident of Colorado Springs for
six years, coming from Great Bend, he retired from Dowell Chemical Company
in 1968.
Merten was a member of First Christian Church in Great Bend.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Darrell E. Merten of
Littleton, Colo., and Robert L. Merten of Ashland, Ore.; five
grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by
three brothers, Roy Merten, Ralph Merten and George Merten; and two
sisters, Rose Mausolf and Lillian Steuri.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home
Chapel in Great Bend, with the Rev. Paxton Jones officiating. Burial will
be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday
at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the
funeral home.

Amelia Wilhelm 1904-2001
Amelia Wilhelm, 96, of Great Bend, died Sept. 1 at Integrated Health
Services in Great Bend. She was born Nov. 2, 1904, in Otis, the daughter of
Conrad and Marie Brecht Krom. A lifelong resident of Barton County, she was
a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Wayne Wilhelm of Seward; one daughter, Gladys
Reddick of Seward; one sister, Katherine Petz of Great Bend; 11
grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Doris Myers; five brothers,
Henry Krom, Conrad Krom, Phillip Krom, Alex Krom and Constantine Krom; and
two sisters, Mary Wittig and Freda Schremmer.
Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Great Bend Cemetery, with the
Rev. Rick Standlee officiating. There is no visitation. Memorials are
suggested to IHS of Great Bend, in care of the Fryberger Mortuary in Great
Bend.

Louis L. Dale 1927-2001
HUTCHINSON - The Rev. Louis L. Dale, 74, died Aug. 29 in an automobile
accident near Dodge City. He was born May 5, 1927, in Amarillo, Texas, the
son of William J. and Ella Shultz Dale. He graduated high school in Donora,
Penn., and received degrees from University of the Ozarks in Clarksville,
Ark., and McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, Ill. He married Sara
Shell Sept. 16, 1952, in Clarksville. A resident of Hutchinson, he was a
retired Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) pastor, having pastored churches in
Highland, Concordia, Newton and Great Bend.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Jon M. Dale of Overland
Park; one daughter, Elizabeth D. Kahn of San Jose, Calif.; one brother,
A.D. Dale of Shell Knob, Mo.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by one brother and one sister.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 15 at First Presbyterian Church in
Hutchinson. Private family inurnment will be at Greenwood cemetery in
Newton at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the endowment fund or
church of any congregation he served, all in care of Elliott Mortuary in
Hutchinson.

Neva Kathleen Hostetler 1924-2001
DODGE CITY -- Neva Kathleen Hostetler, 76, died Aug. 29 at Trinity Manor
Nursing Home in Dodge City. She was born Nov. 28, 1924, in Ford County, the
daughter of George Carl and Lulu Crego Lenz. She was a 1942 graduate of
Dodge City High School. She married Robert Gene Hostetler May 21, 1949, in
Dodge City. A resident of Dodge City since 1993, coming from Great Bend and
Wichita, she worked for the Great Bend Police Department and Barton County
Health Department, and was owner of Hostetler Sales and Cats Fifth Avenue.
Mrs. Hostetler was a member of the Church of God in Dodge City and Great
Bend Church of God, where is was music director.
Survivors include one son, Roger Curtis Hostetler of Guam; one daughter, Joy
Kathleen Williams of Dodge City; two brothers, Chester Dale Lenz of
Holyrood, and George Carl Lenz Jr. of Wichita; three sisters, Adalene
Eversole, Doris Daniel and Amy Winkler, all of Dodge City. She was preceded
in death by three brothers, Wayne Lenz, Earl Lenz and Virgil Lenz; two
sisters, Dorothy Snodgrass and Leona Decker; and one granddaughter, Kelli
Laine Williams.
A memorial service is pending. Cremation has taking place. Memorials are
suggested to the Neva Hostetler memorial fund, in care of Burkhart Funeral
Chapel in Dodge City.

Hilda R. Penka 1911-2001
LARNED -- Hilda R. Penka, 89, died Aug. 31, at Central Kansas Medical Center,
St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Dec. 12, 1911, in Barton County,
the daughter of John and Louisa Beran Boor. She married Peter OPete' Frank
Penka Oct. 25, 1933, at Odin. He died Jan. 3, 1981. A lifetime resident of
Pawnee County, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Penka was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Larned, honorary
member of the Sacred Heart Altar Society, and Zook Extension Homemakers
Unit.
Survivors include five sons, Vernon Penka of Kansas City, Larry Penka of
Ingalls, Roy Penka of Belpre, Allen Penka of Dodge City and Gerald Penka of
Norwood, Mass.; six daughters, Kathy Bowman and Mary Ann Tammen, both of
Larned, Betty White of Excelsior Spring, Mo., Patricia Klamm of Kansas City,
Joyce Sims of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Connie Mauney of Pawnee Rock; one
brother, John Boor; five sisters, Alice Schneweis, Loretta Weiser, Teresa
Weiser, Cecilia Gerstenkorn and Eleanor Klug; 32 grandchildren; and 42
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandchild, Gary Lee;
four brothers; and six sisters.
Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in
Larned. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the
Rev. Dennis Reed officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today
and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, all at the mortuary. Burial will be at
Belpre cemetery in Belpre. Memorials are suggested to the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation or Pawnee County 4-H Foundation, both in care of the mortuary.
