LaVerne D. 'Bud' Olander 1913-2001
LITTLE RIVER - LaVerne D. "Bud" Olander, 87, died Sept. 10 at Sandstone
Heights Nursing Home in Little River. He was born Oct. 21, 1913, in Little
River, the son of John E. and Sadie Olson Olander. He was a 1932 graduate
of Little River High School. He married
Nadine Marshall Aug. 15, 1945, in
Hutchinson. A lifelong resident of Little River, he was a farmer and
cattleman.
Olander was a member of United Methodist Church, Fry Chapel, United
Methodist Men, Lions Club, former school board member of USD 444, former
Rockville Township trustee, all of Little River, served on Rice County ASCS
committee and member of Farm Management Association.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Randall Olander of Little
River; two daughters, Judith White of Little River and Jane Ann McNeil of
New Willington, Penn.; one sister, Marie Sisk of Great Bend; and nine
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence
Olander, Clifford Olander and Carl Olander; and three sisters, Rena Harder,
Vila Olander and Mabel Johnson.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Grant
Davis officiating. Burial will be at Bean Memorial cemetery in Little
River. Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Thursday at Sillin Funeral Home in
Lyons. Memorials are suggested to the church or Rose Memorial Scholarship
Fund, all in care of the funeral home.

Kenneth Ray Hale 1932-2001
LINDSAY, Okla. - Kenneth Ray Hale, 68, died Sept. 9 at his home in Lindsay
as a result of cancer. He was born Oct. 2, 1932, in Seminole, Okla., the
son of John V. and Bertha Maples Hale. He married
Nina Merten in 1952, in
Huntsville, Ark. A resident of Lindsay, he was owner/operator of Lindsay
Two-Way Consolidated Inc. and a partner in TriCom Tower Leasing.
Hale was a member of United Methodist Church in Lindsay.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Ronne Hale of Addison,
Texas, and Jeffery Hale of Choctaw, Okla.; two daughters, Rebecca Hale of
Bolingbrook, Ill., and Brenda Postlethwaite of Lindsay; two brothers,
Preston Hale of Bakersfield, Calif., and Johnny Leon Hale of Lindsay; one
sister, Loretta Cooke of St. Jo, Texas; and three grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by one brother, Willie V. Hale; and one sister, Clarice
West Roe.
Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. George
Lupton officiating. Burial will be at Green Hill cemetery in Lindsay. There

Elmira Bennett 1913-2001
HUTCHINSON - Elmira Bennett, 87, died Sept. 10 at Hutchinson Hospital. She
was born Sept. 17, 1913, in Iola, the daughter of George and Lucy Walters
Woolery. She was a 1931 graduate of Wichita North High School. She married
Jerald Hazen "Bill" Bennett July 9, 1937, in Wichita. He died March 28,
2001. A resident of Hutchinson, coming from Tahlequah, Okla., Hoisington
and Lyons, she was retired from Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose
Campus, Intensive Care Unit in Great Bend.
Mrs. Bennett was a member of Order of Eastern Star in Valley Center.
Survivors include two daughters, Ila Rae Higgings of Wichita and Dee Ann
Linsner of Hoisington; three grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; three
great-grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by one brother, Max Woolery.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Valley Cemetery
in Bentley, with the Rev. Richard Stuchlik officiating. Friends may call
until 9 tonight at Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson. Memorials are suggested
to Great Bend Humane Society or St. Teresa's Catholic Church, both in care
of the mortuary.

Naomi Clark Schmiedeskamp Seagle 1914-2001
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Naomi Clark Schmiedeskamp Seagle, 87, died June 7
in North Little Rock. She was born May 10, 1914, in Enterprise, Iowa, the
daughter of Edgar Oral and Crissa Belle Southern Clark. She married
Walter
D. Seagle. He preceded her in death. A resident of North Little Rock, she
was a homemaker and retired bank teller.
Mrs. Seagle was a member of Spring River Presbyterian Church, Honey Bees
Quartet, and Cherokee Village Community Chorus. She was the 1929 Kansas
State Debate Champion and freshman queen at Phillips University.
Survivors include two daughters, Judith Lynn Reed of North Little Rock and
Elizabeth Eloise Foster of Littleton, Colo.; one stepdaughter, Jean Seagle
of Memphis, Tenn.; one sister, Gwendolyn Cline of Blackwell, Okla.; and
three grandsons.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hoisington cemetery in
Hoisington. There is no visitation and no memorials are suggested.

Anna Harriett Brinson 1913-2001
HOISINGTON - Anna Harriett Brinson, 88, died Sept. 8 at Hoisington
Rehabilitation Center in Hoisington. She was born April 7, 1913, in Lakin,
the daughter of Thomas and Nancy Louise Bell Baugh. She married
W. Delmer
Brinson July 25, 1932, in Great Bend. He died Oct. 19, 1975. A longtime
resident of Barton County, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Brinson was a member of Community Christian Church, Clara Barton
Rebekah Lodge and Silver and Gold Club, all of Great Bend, and South
Homestead Extension Homemakers Unit.
Survivors include one son, Loren G. Brinson of Hoisington; one daughter,
Nancy D. Farmer of Hoisington; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren;
seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by one daughter, Lou Ann Fitzpatrick; and two brothers,
J. Blackburn Baugh and Clyde Baugh.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in
Hoisington, with the Revs. Jack Sweany and Don Paden officiating. Burial
will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Barton County. Friends may call until
9 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until service time
Wednesday, all at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church,

John J. Dickerson 1914-2001
LYONS - John J. Dickerson, 86, died Sept. 9 at Shawnee Regional Hospital in
Shawnee, Okla. He was born Dec. 2, 1914, in Oswego, the son of John H. and
Minnie Pearl Grey Dickerson. He married
Marjorie L. Janssen Nov. 1, 1936,
in Lyons. She died March 28, 1992. A resident of Lyons from 1935 to 1998
before moving to Oklahoma, he was a retired oil field driller.
Dickerson was a member of United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge, both
of Lyons, and Carpenters Union of Wichita.
Survivors include one daughter, Judy Moody of Shawnee; five grandchildren;
and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Jerry
Dickerson; one infant daughter, Redith Dickerson; three brothers and one
sister.
Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Lyons Municipal
Cemetery, with the Rev. Cindy Watson officiating. There will be no
visitation. Memorials are suggested to the church or American Cancer
Society, both in care of Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons.

Leonard Folkerts 1923-2001
OVIEDO, Fla. - Leonard Folkerts, 78, died Sept. 6 in Oviedo. He was born
June 3, 1923, near Albert. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran
Church near Albert. He attended Stony Seven School and Otis Rural High
School. He graduated from Fort Hays State Teachers College. He attended
Capital University and Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. He
was ordained June 14, 1953, at the church, by the Rev. Otto Zeilinger. He
married Betty Manahan Sept. 19, 1942, in La Crosse. A resident of Oviedo,
coming from Kansas, he was a pastor for numerous churches in the Central
District of the American Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Brig. Gen. John Folkerts,
USAF, of Moody Air Force Base in Georgia, and Col. Jerald Folkerts, USAF,
of Portugal; two daughters, Adene Folkerts of Manhattan and Jean Towns of
Washington, D.C.; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Virginia Evaline Johnson 1920-2001
LARNED - Virginia Evaline Johnson, 80, died Sept. 5 at Littleton Manor
Nursing Home in Littleton, Colo. She was born Dec. 10, 1920, the daughter
of Lyman and Augusta Fitzgerald Kinsel. She was a graduate of Ness City
High School and attended Fort Hays State College. She married
William
'Bill' Johnson on Dec. 31, 1939, at Hays. He died July 17, 1992. A longtime
resident of Larned, she was a retired secretary for Farm Bureau Insurance.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of First Christian Church, Christian Women
Fellowship, Daughters of the American Revolution, LI-AR-MU and Gay
Twenties, all of Larned.
Survivors include one son, Bill F. Johnson of Littleton; one daughter,
Vickie Peterson of Littleton; six grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned
with the Rev. Dan Lundgren officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service
time Monday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the church or Alzheimer's Disease and Related
Disorders Association, all in care of the mortuary.

Hester I. Thurston 1919-2001
OVERLAND PARK - Hester I. Thurston, 82, died Sept. 7. She was born Feb. 5,
1919, at Alexander, the daughter of George and Mary Miller. She received a
bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Kansas, a MPS from
Colorado University and an EDS from Missouri University. A lifelong
resident of the Kansas City area, she taught at the Dominican School of
Nursing in Great Bend and at Marymount College in Salina. She then joined
the faculty at the University of Kansas Medical Center. While at KUMC, she
established a nursing exchange program with the University of the
Philippines, taught in the graduate program, was director of the continuing
education program and was appointed as the first dean of the School of
Nursing. Mrs. Thurston retired as professor emeritus in 1989.
Mrs. Thurston was a member of Apostle Episcopal Church, Kansas State Board
of Nursing, Kansas State Nurses Association, American Nurses Association,
Sigma Theta Tau International, a consultant and site visitor for the
National League for Nursing, board member and chairperson of Johnson County
Commission, and a volunteer at the Turner House in Kansas City. She was a
veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include one daughter, Cindy Thurston of Overland Park; and one
sister, Virginia Spomer of Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Friends may call from
6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Johnson County Chapel in
Overland Park. Memorials are suggested to Hester I. Thurston Award Fund, KU
Endowment Fund, the church or the Sisters, Servants of Mary, all in care of
the funeral chapel.

William H. 'Bill' Wade 1945-2001
ELLIS - William H. "Bill" Wade, 56, died Sept. 6 in Ellis due to a grain
elevator accident. He was born Aug. 13, 1945, in Great Bend, the son of
George A. and Elizabeth Frey Wade. He was a graduate of Hays High School.
He married
Sandra A. Newton May 22, 1973, in Hays. A resident of Ellis
since 1975, coming from Hays, he was a grain elevator operator at Golden
Belt Co-op in Ellis.
Wade was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, church choir, Christmas and
Easter community choir, past council member of the church and the Ellis
Recreation Commission, coach of Little League baseball teams, and announced
at wrestling matches and football games, all in Ellis. He was a U.S. Navy
veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Aaron Wade of San Diego,
Calif., and Bill Zielinski of Everett, Wash.; two daughters, Jessica Price
of Ellis and Michelle Artesburn of Union Lake, Mich.; his mother of Ellis;
three brothers, Ron Wade of La Fayette, La., Don Wade of Dodge City and
Gordon Wade of Topeka; one sister, Cindy Siemers of Topeka; and five
grandchildren.
Prayer service will be at 7 p.m. tonight at the church. Funeral service
will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Lyle M. Knuth
officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may call from
2-4:30 p.m. today at Wasinger Funeral Chapel in Ellis, from 6-8 p.m. today
at the church, and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday at the church. The
