Maude Metcalfe 1902-2001
STAFFORD - Maude Metcalfe, 99, died Sept. 27 at her residence in Stafford.
She was born June 28, 1902 at Ft. Cobb, Okla., the daughter of Robert D. and
Tahlulah H. Nance Sparks. She married
Shelby L. Metcalfe, Jan. 4, 1924, in
Anadarko, Okla. He died April 19, 1982. A resident of Stafford coming from
Sylvia, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Metcalfe was a member of various bridge clubs and homemker's clubs,
E.H.U. of Sylvia and the O.E.S. in Oklahoma.
Survivors include one daughter, Lou Ferguson of Preston; nine grandchildren,
15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Sylvia cemetery with the Rev.
Guy Elliott officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to noon at Minnis
Chapel in Stafford. Memorials are suggested to the Southwind Hospice of
Pratt in care of the Chapel.

Dr. Joseph 'Doug' Kirkman 1942-2001
HAYS -- Dr. Joseph "Doug" Kirkman, 59, died Sept. 26 at his home in Hays. He
was born Feb. 17, 1942, in Great Bend, the son of K.W. 'Pete' and Dolores
Schartz Kirkman. He was a 1960 graduate of Great Bend High School. He
graduated from Fort Hays State University and was a 1972 graduate of UMKC
School of Dentistry. He married
Mari Griffin Dec. 29, 1989, in Phoenix,
Ariz. A resident of Hays, he was a dentist.
Kirkman was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Knights of Columbus, Veterans
of Foriegn Wars and American Legion, all of Hays, American Dental
Association, Kansas Dental Association and Golden Belt Dental Society.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Kristopher Kirkman of
Denver, Colo.; two daughters, Kelly Parker of Dallas, Texas, and Kathy
McDonald of Kansas City; his mother of Great Bend; one brother, Donald
Kirkman of Great Bend; one sister, Jill Eliason of Kansas City; and three
grandchildren.
Parish vigil will be at 7 tonight, followed by K of C rosary, both at
Brock's North Hill Chapel in Hays. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at
the church in Hays, with the Rev. Mike Scully officiating. Burial will be at
St. Joseph's cemetery in Hays, with graveside military honors by Hays VFW
and American Legion. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 8:30-9:30
a.m. Saturday, all at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to ALS
Association, in care of the funeral chapel.

Silas Quentin Patterson 1998-2001
HAMMONDS PLAINS, Nova Scotia, Canada -- Silas Quentin Patterson, 3, died Aug.
22 of cancer. He was born June 20, 1998, in Wichita, the son of Jerald and
Lorri Patterson.
Survivors include his parents of the home; one sister, Marleese Patterson of
the home; his grandparents, Carroll Kreutzer of Great Bend, Elwyn
Hammerschmidt of Hoisington, and Bob and Sue Patterson of Ponca City, Okla.;
and his great-grandmother, Mildred Patterson of El Dorado.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church in El
Dorado. There is no visitation and no memorials are suggested.

Ruby Pearl Barnhart 1906-2001
Ruby Pearl Barnhart, 95, of Great Bend, died Sept. 27 at Integrated Heath
Services in Great Bend. She was born July 29, 1906, in Great Bend. She
married Arthur O. Barnhart. He died in December 1971. A resident of Great
Bend, coming from California, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Barnhart was a member of the Baptist church.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews including Violet Seder of Great
Bend.
Interment will be at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, Calif. There will
be no visitation and no memorials are suggested. Funeral arrangements are by
Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend.

Joseph R. Wondra 1917-2001
ODIN -- Joseph R. Wondra, 84, died Sept. 25 at Hoisington Rehabilitation
Center in Hoisington. He was born March 17, 1917, in Barton County, the son
of Frank and Maria Zorn Wondra. A resident of Odin, he was a retired farmer.
Wondra was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and
past member of Holy Name Society, all in Odin.
Survivors include one brother, Fred Wondra of Hoisington. He was preceded in
death by four brothers, Bill Wondra, Hubert Wondra, Frank Wondra Jr. and one
infant brother; and one sister, Mary Jenisch.
Family rosary will be at 7:30 tonight at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in
Hoisington. Parish rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday followed by a Knights
of Columbus rosary, all at the funeral home. Funeral will be at 10 a.m.
Friday at the church, with the Rev. Pascal Klein officiating. Burial will be
at Holy Family cemetery in Odin. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church or
Claflin Ambulance Service, both in care of the funeral home.

Doreen A. Crooks 1926-2001
Doreen A. Crooks, 75, of Great Bend, died Sept. 24 at her residence. She was
born Feb. 19, 1926, in Great Bend, the daughter of Edwin and Myrtle Unruh
Rudiger. She married
Paul E. Campbell May 29, 1946, in Pawnee Rock. She
later married
Ernest L. Crooks in Oklahoma. A lifelong resident of Great
Bend, she was a psychiatric aide at Larned State Hospital.
She was a member of Bergthal Mennonite Church in Pawnee Rock.
Survivors include two sons, Bob A. Campbell of Hays and Mikael R. Crooks of
Great Bend; one daughter, Linda J. Ford of Great Bend; one sister, Vera V.
Spencer of Wichita; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by one son, Randall L. Campbell.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bergthal Mennonite
Cemetery in Pawnee Rock, with the Rev. Don Paden officiating. Friends may
call from 4-9 p.m. tonight, with family receiving friends from 7-9 p.m.

Leo James Landry 1915-2001
LA CROSSE -- Leo James Landry, 86, died Sept. 23 at Rush County Memorial
Hospital in La Crosse. He was born Feb. 2, 1915, in New Rochelle, N.Y., the
son of Leo F. and Rose G. Mullins Landry. He attended schools in New
Rochelle, and was a graduate of New York Military Academy. He attended
Fordham University and Syracuse College. He married
Berniece Weigand March
30, 1943, in Wichita. A resident of La Crosse since 1946, he was a retired
farmer and partner in the L and W Motor and Implement Company in La Crosse.
Landry was a member of United Methodist Church in La Crosse.
Survivors include his wife of the home. He was preceded in death by one
daughter, Carolyn Rose Landry; and two sisters, Virginia R. Sanford and
Dorothy G. Titus.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Marilyn
Christmore officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse City Cemetery. Friends
may call until 7 tonight at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. Memorials

Dean A. Umberger 1921-2001
LARNED -- Dean A. Umberger, 80, died Sept. 23 at Fort Dodge. He was born July
19, 1921, in Rozel, the son of Adlai and Rosetta Wormwood Umberger. He
married Eleanor Brannan Oct. 29, 1944, in Rozel. A lifelong resident of
Rozel, he was a farmer and cattleman.
Umberger was a member of United Methodist Church in Burdett, American
Hereford Association, Kansas Polled Hereford Association and former 4-H
community leader.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Greg Umberger of Rozel; one
daughter, Gayle Cornwell of St. John; one sister, Rosalyn Bruntzel of
Ulysses; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers,
Dave Umberger and Cody Umberger.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned,
with the Rev. Tony Horsley officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery.
Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time
Wednesday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Pawnee Heights
School Enhancement Fund or Kansas State University Center of Basic Cancer
Research, both in care of the mortuary.

Esther M. Popp 1911-2001
HOISINGTON -- Esther M. Popp, 90, died Sept. 23 in Wichita. She was born
April 1, 1911, in rural Milberger, the daughter of Reinhardt and Anna Nuss
Steinert. She married
Herman T. Popp Oct. 1, 1936, in Hoisington. He died
Feb. 8, 1993. A lifelong resident of the Hoisington area, she was a
homemaker.
Mrs. Popp was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hoisington.
Survivors include two sons, Donald D. Popp and Duane H. Popp, both of
Hoisington; three daughters, Vida M. Singleton of Wichita, Gloria A.
Arnberger of Great Bend and Deborah L. Richardson of Ames, Iowa; one sister,
Tabea Karst of Hoisington; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by one brother, Marvin R. Steinert; and two sisters,
Caroline Wasemiller and Rachel Karst.
Prayer service will be at 7:30 tonight at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in
Hoisington. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with the
Rev. Kelly Taylor-Schaus officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington Cemetery.
Friends may call until 9 tonight, from 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral
home and from 12:30 p.m. until service time Wednesday at the church.

Lana Long Walton 1942-2001
MESA, Ariz. -- Lana Long Walton, 59, died Sept. 21 at her home in Mesa. She
was born in Great Bend, the daughter of Frederick and Margorie Christiansen
Long. She was a graduate of Ellinwood High School and attended secretarial
school in Hutchinson. A resident of Mesa, coming from Great Bend, she worked
at the MARC Center for adults in Mesa.
She was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Ellinwood.
Survivors include one son, James Tillery of Great Bend; two daughters, Gene
Robinson and Kayla Tillery, both of Mesa; her mother of Ellinwood; one
brother, Dennis Long of Hutchinson; and three grandchildren.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev.
Larry Young officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche cemetery in
Ellinwood. There is no visitation, cremation has taken place. Memorials are
suggested to Lana Walton Memorial Fund, in care of the church.

Glenn H. Lakin 1917-2001
McPHERSON -- Glenn H. Lakin, 84, died Sept. 22 at Hutchinson Hospital in
Hutchinson. He was born March 25, 1917, in rural Meade, the son of David
Williamson and Merta Edith Plilar Lakin. He was a 1935 graduate of Preston
High School in Preston and completed a course in diesel mechanics. He
married Marie Long Sept. 25, 1938. She died Sept. 27, 1981. He married
Ena
Lucille Stewart Uhrig June 12, 1982. A resident of McPherson since 1982,
coming from Pawnee Rock, he was a machine mechanic, retiring from M & F
Plumbing in Great Bend and Larned.
Lakin was a member of First Baptist Church in McPherson and Fidelis Class.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Donald Lakin of Chahalis,
Wash., and Dean Lakin of Pawnee Rock; one daughter, Glenda Nuebel of
Dunkerton, Iowa; two stepsons, Dwayne Uhrig of Republic, Mo., and Verlyn
Uhrig of Hesston; four stepdaughters, Phyllis Scherich of Wilmore, Myrla
Walkley of Wichita, Janis Willard of McPherson and Brenda Wilson of Adrian,
Mo.; two brothers, Everett Lakin of Salina and James Lakin of Pleasant Hill,
Mo.; 26 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by one brother, Merle Lakin.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Les
Cantrell officiating. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at
Pleasant Valley (Geist) cemetery in Preston. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m.
today, with family receiving from 6-8 p.m., all at Glidden-Ediger Funeral
Home in McPherson. Memorials are suggested to the church or donar's choice,
both in care of the funeral home.
