Ruth Carey Richards 1920-2001
LA CROSSE - Ruth Carey Richards, 81, died Nov. 6 at Rush County Nursing Home in La Crosse. She was born Oct. 18, 1920, in New York City, N.Y., one of 10 children born to John and Winifred Mary Lynch Carey. She married
Ray S. Richards Aug. 28, 1953, in New York City. He died June 26, 1976. Mrs. Richards lived in Phoenix, Ariz. for more than 40 years and was a yoga instructor at Phoenix College. She then moved to Great Bend, where she lived for 2 1/2 years before recently moving to La Crosse. Mrs. Richards was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, SPAM Writer's Guild and Walkabout Arizona. Mrs. Richards was a published author of three books. Survivors include one daughter, Carol Barta of La Crosse; two grandsons, Brian Barta and Jerome Barta, both of La Crosse; and one granddaughter, Caitlin Kendrick of Greeley, Colo. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Warren Stecklein officiating. Sarah Merten 'Sally' Bowman 1936-2001
DENTON, Texas - Sarah Merten 'Sally' Bowman, 65, died Oct. 30 at Denton Nursing Center in Denton. She was born April 1, 1936, in Great Bend, the daughter of Lloyd and Margaret Deklyn Merten. She was a 1958 graduate of Fort Hays State University. She married
Larry Bowman Jan. 25, 1958, in Great Bend. A resident of Denton, she was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Curtis Alan Bowman of Philadelphia, Pa.; one brother, Robert Merten of Lakewood, Colo.; four sisters, Mary Anne Mull of Great Bend, Rachel Miller of Eufaula, Okla., Martha Merten of Greensboro, N.C., and Rebecca Midica of Los Angeles, Ca. Services were Saturday at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home Chapel in Denton. Burial was at Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton. No memorials are suggested. Nov. 7, 2001
Georgia A. Weber 1907-2001
WILSON - Georgia A. Weber, 94, died Nov. 5 at Presbyterian Manor in Topeka. She was born April 20, 1907, in Rozel, the daughter of Steve and Josephine Hoch Maixner. She married
Frank J. Weber June 8, 1940. He preceded her in death. A lifetime resident of the Dubuque/Wilson area, she worked as a clerk for Schermerhorn's Dry Goods and Zeman's Drug Store, both of Wilson. Mrs. Weber was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Order of the Eastern Star, both of Wilson. Survivors include one son, Dr. Wallace Weber of Dubuque; one daughter, Cheryl Weber of Topeka; three sisters, Anna Anschutz of Wilson, Laverne McConnell of Bristol, Conn., and Lillain Bonnewell of Chino Valley, Ariz.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Alice Veverka. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Foster Mortuary Chapel in Wilson, with the Rev. Elaine Lord officiating. Burial will be at Wilson City Cemetery. Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. until service time Friday, all at the mortuary. Sarah M. 'Sue' Suchy, 76, of Great Bend, died Nov. 4 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus in Larned. She was born June 17, 1925, in Great Bend, the daughter of George Sr. and Frances Koelsch Whitsel. She married
Joseph Suchy in Great Bend. He died April 27, 1983. A lifelong resident of Great Bend, she worked as a hand polisher for the Fuller Brush Company. Mrs. Suchy was a member of the Lutheran faith. Survivors include one son, Roger D. Suchy of Great Bend; two daughters, Connie Belt of Great Bend and Linda Raney of Grand Prairie, Texas; four sisters, Jody Young of Albany, Ore., Norma Smith of Hoisington, Jeanie Gregory and Lillian Claphan, both of Great Bend; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers; Franklin Whitsel, Melvin Whitsel, and George Whitsel Jr; one sister, Media Rankin; and one great- grandson. Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Great Bend Cemetery, with the Rev. Shannon Tiller officiating. Albert V. Schneweis 1904-2001
DODGE CITY - Albert V. Schneweis, 97, died Nov. 5 at Manor of the Plains in Dodge City. He was born April 8, 1904, in Odin, the son of Frank and Karoline Fonscher Schneweis. He married
Katherine Boor May 17, 1927, in Odin. She died March 2, 1978. A resident of Dodge City since 1927, coming from Odin, he was a farmer and stockman. Schneweis was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral Church and Knights of Columbus Council 2955, both of Dodge City. He was the former treasurer for Richland Township. Survivors include five sons, Vernon Schneweis, Robert Schneweis, Kenneth Schneweis and Michael Schneweis, all of Dodge City and David Schneweis of Lawrence; three daughters, Kathleen Minton of Montrose, Colo., Donna Dick and Karla Durrant, both of Dodge City; three sisters, Eleanor Prosser and Sister Henrietta Schneweis, both of Great Bend and Helen Schneweis of Claflin; 35 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Gerald Duane Schneweis; three daughters, JoAnn Cline, Elaine Marie Schneweis and Carrol Ann Schneweis; and three grandchildren, Tyler Seidl, Shelley Ann Schneweis and Chris Minton. Vigil service followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, both at Burkhart Funeral Chapel in Dodge City. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Bishop Ronald M. Gilmore and the Revs. Colin Boor, Ted A. Skalsky and Ted Stoecklein officiating. LA CROSSE - Cletus "Dick" Depperschmidt, 65, died Nov. 3 at Rush County Memorial Hospital in La Crosse. He was born June 20, 1936, in Park, the son of Alphonse and Tillie Kuhn Depperschmidt. He married
Mary Schumacher Nov. 9, 1957, in Grainfield. A resident of La Crosse for 35 years, coming from Downs, he worked as a mill supervisor in the furniture industry. Depperschmidt was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in La Crosse, Veteran of Foreign Wars and volunteered for the fire department, all of La Crosse. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, David Depperschmidt of Wichita and Patrick Depperschmidt of La Crosse; two daughters, Tammy Randa of Beloit and Cindy La Mastres of Dallas, Texas; his mother of Colby; four brothers, Gerald Depperschmidt of Hill City, Marvin Depperschmidt of Salina, Kenneth Depperschmidt of Smith Center and Lester Depperschmidt of Derby; three sisters, Kathleen Woerple and Marilyn Heble, both of Colby, and Linda Waddell of Stockton; and nine grandchildren. Raymond J. Smith
LEXINGTON, KY - Raymond J. Smith, 94, died Oct. 17. He studied Architecture for 2 years at Kansas State University. He married
Anita Crimm Smith. She preceded him death. A resident of Lexington, coming from Great Bend, he was a retired vice president of C.O. Mammel Food Stores in Great Bend. Smith was a member of the United Methodist Church, and the Petroleum Club. Smith was on the Great Bend cemetery Board, and on the boards of the Y.M.C.A., United Methodist Church and Boy Scouts. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific. Survivors include two sons, James D. Smith of Lexington, and Michael R. Smith of Bozeman, Mont.; one daughter, Patricia A. Serpan of Danville, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great- grandchildren. Memorial Service will be at 10 a.m. on Nov. 7, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Lexington. Garland Nick Nichols, 64, of Great Bend, died Nov. 2 at his residence in Great Bend. He was born Dec. 12, 1936, in Akron, Ohio, the son of Harley and Angela Krash Nichols. he married
Janice Hickel Aug. 4, 1973 at Long Beach, Calif. A resident of Great Bend for five years coming from Long Beach, he was retired form the McDonnell-Douglas Aircraft working in Production Control. Nichols was a member of the St. Rose Catholic Church in Great Bend, and a U.S. Army Veteran. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Mark Nichols of Great Bend; one brother, Earl Nichols of Arkon; one sister, Barbara Solo also of Arkon. He was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Nichols. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. tonight at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Bushton with the Rev. Steven Scheier. Burial will be at Holy Name cemetery in Bushton. Marvin I. Kastning Sept. 20, 1936, in Powersite, Mo. He preceded her in death. A resident of St. John, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Kastning was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church in St. John. Survivors include two sons, George Kastning of St. John and Leonard Kastning of El Paso, Texas; two daughters, Virginia Myers of Ponca City, Okla., and Velda Young of St. John; one brother, Alvie Johnson of Ava, Mo.; two sisters, Lucy Parker of Macksville and Mildred Turner of Ellis; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one brother, Willie Johnson; and two sisters, Ruth Goodnight and Therma Turner. Graveside inurnment service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fairview Park cemetery in St. John, with the Rev. A.J. Owens officiating. Cremation has taken place and there is no visitation. Billie Marguritte Elliot May 23, 1947, in Ulysses. A resident of Ulysses, he was a heavy equipment operator on mainline pipeline construction projects throughout the United States. Carter was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Robert Bruce Carter of Ulysses and Lonnie Carter of Great Bend; three daughters, Gayla June Mills of Moriarty, N.M., Francis Ann Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Stacy Lynn Taylor of Eldorado Springs, Mo.; one brother, John Carter of Kendall; three sisters, Nancy Boyd of Genoa, Colo., Wanda Ruth Tibe Dahlquist of Bartlesville, Okla., and Ruby Campbell of Manter; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Vernon Dale Carter, Francis L. "Pete" Carter and Franklin D. Carter; one sister, Alta Yvonne Carter; and one grandson, Robert P. "Robbie" Carter. Gaston Young May 21, 1930, in Logan. He died July 19, 1986. A resident of Great Bend, coming from Ness City, she was a nurses' aide for the geriatrics unit of Ness County Hospital. Mrs. Young was a member of First Baptist Church and Rebekah Lodge, both of Ness City. Survivors include three daughters, Phyllis McCulley of Great Bend, Margaret Krug of Hoisington and Joyce Kraft of Lakewood, Colo.; one sister, Ruby Johnson of Platte City, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Glenn Ross, Edward Ross and Raymond Ross; one sister, Gladys McClurg; and two great-grandsons, Ross Kraft and Cooper Krug. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Russell King officiating. Burial will be at Ness City Cemetery. Robert 'Bobby' Everett Dean 1979-2001
Robert "Bobby" Everett Dean, 22, of Great Bend, died Nov. 1 in Great Bend. He was born Oct. 8, 1979, in Phoenix, Ariz., the son of Gilbert J. Dean and Janell Marie Wendt. He attended Barton County Academy, graduating in 2001. A long time resident of Great Bend, he was a cook for Kentucky Fried Chicken in Great Bend. Dean attended Assembly of God Church in Great Bend. Survivors include his father of Clarksville, Ark.; his mother and stepfather, Janell and Dennis Michael of Brownell; two brothers, Jeffrey Dean of Brownell and Scott Dean of Ridgeville, S.C.; one stepsister, Amber Michael of Minnesota; and his grandparents, Bruce E. Sr. and Oletha Wendt of Great Bend. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Great Bend Family Mortuary and Crematory in Great Bend, with the Rev. Larry Berringer officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Inurnment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park cemetery at a later date.
