Virginia M. Austin, 83, lifelong Newkirk resident, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2007, in Integris Bass Baptist Health Center, Enid.
Arrangements are pending and under the direction of the Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.

Gary W. Lowrie

Gary W. Lowrie, 67, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007, at Western Plains Medical Complex, Dodge City. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Dodge City, with the Rev. Randall Jahnke presiding. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City. Friends may call at the funeral home until 8 p.m. today. Born April 15, 1940, in Arkansas City, he was the son of William and Louella Pingry Lowrie. He was a distributor for Phillips 66 Oil Company in Clark County. For 17 years, he owned and operated Gary's Stop in Ford, which later changed to the Blue Hereford Stop, which he operated for the past three years. Survivors include his wife, Franki Lee Selvage Lilley Lowrie; three sons, Gary Wayne Lowrie, of Ford, Edward Lowrie, San Pedro, Calif., and Tony Lowrie, Wichita; two daughters, Cherie Lowrie and Stacia Lowrie, both of Dodge City; his sister, Zella Elliott, Arkansas City; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Amy Krisle; three brothers, Harold, Jim and Bill Lowrie; and four sisters, Delores Richardson, Mary Lou Whitford, Joan Calhoun and Beverly Darst.
The family suggests memorials to Holy Cross Lutheran Church in care of Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, Kansas 67801.

Betty Jane Lamb

Betty Jane Lamb, daughter of Hattie (Jenkins) and Guy Good, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007, at the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 7 p.m. today. She was deputy city clerk for the City of Winfield. Survivors include a cousin, Stan Jenkins, of Winfield; one niece, Patty L. Graniero, Sugar Hill, Ga.; and cousins. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary E. Lefler.
Memorials have been established for the Winfield Community Theatre, Queen City Chapter 138 of Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Patricia Stringfield

Patricia Stringfield, 74, Wellington, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2007, at the Sumner Regional Medical Center in Wellington. No services have been scheduled. Cremation has been effected. Patricia Louise was born on Dec. 27, 1932, in Caldwell, Kan., the daughter of Fred and Ruby Swaggart. Patricia had been a cosmetologist and hair dresser in Wellington, for more than 56 years. Survivors include her son, Fred Stringfield, of Wellington; daughters, Ruby L. Stringfield, of Wellington, and Mary Steffes, of Wellington; brothers, Fred Swaggart, of Weslaco, Texas, and Thomas Swaggart, of Port Orchard, Wash.; sister, Mary Clingenpeal, of Medford, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death are by her parents; husband C. H. "String" Stringfield; and sister, Geraldine Swaggart.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Patricia Stringfield memorial fund to cover funeral costs. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hawks Funeral Home, Wellington.

Sandra L. Porterfield

Sandra L. Porterfield, 47, of Arkansas City, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 17, 2007, at the First Southern Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Parker Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Sandra was born Feb. 2, 1960, in Winfield, the daughter of Howard and Molly Seivley. Survivors include her husband, Richard D. Porterfield, of the home; daughters, Charlene Ward, of Arkansas City, and Emilie Porterfield, of Winfield; one granddaughter; and one brother, Michael Seivley, of Wichita.
Memorial contributions may made to the youth group of First Southern Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Hawks Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

William Brownlow Jones

William Brownlow Jones, 83, formerly of Braman, Okla., died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007, at the Presbyterian Manor in Arkansas City. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2007, in the Roberts and Son Funeral Home Chapel. Lanny Jobe of the Blackwell Church of Christ will officiate. Private family interment will be held in the Braman Cemetery. Born Sept. 29, 1924, in Braman, Okla., he was the son of Hobart B. and Ruby Marie (Orr) Jones. He worked as a bookkeeper in the oil industry until his retirement. Survivors include his stepdaughter, Mary Ellis Barry, Walpole, Mass.; two sisters, Leva Maxine Morrison, Wichita, and Alice Laurita Moore, South Haven; and three step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Edward, Floyd and Cleta Jones.
A memorial has been established for the Blackwell Church of Christ. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Roberts and Son Funeral Home, Blackwell.

Mary Ellen Smith

Mary Ellen Smith, 87, of Arkansas City, died at the Presbyterian Manor Health Center on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, of a recently diagnosed brain tumor. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at Trinity Episcopal Church. Interment will be in the Parker Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday. Mary Ellen was born on July 2, 1920, in Oklahoma City, to Charles and Edna Mae Bright. Although the family lived in Atlanta and Tulsa briefly, most of her upbringing took place in Oklahoma City. As a youth, she excelled at the piano and organ. Her father died while she was at Classen High School, and her mother died while Mary Ellen was studying music at Oklahoma City University. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1942. A scholarship from her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega, afforded her the opportunity to study at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she completed a graduate certificate in singing in 1944. While in New York she performed in the 1943-44 production of The Vagabond King on Broadway. A highlight of her singing career was her appearance as the soprano soloist for a performance of Brahms' Requiem with the Oklahoma State Symphony, which was broadcast to the state, to commemorate the first anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. C. B. Macklin, music critic for the Daily Oklahoman, wrote that "it would be difficult to imagine anything more exactly fitting and beautiful than her performance." Following her marriage to Dr. Newton Smith in Oklahoma City on June 1, 1945, she lived in North Carolina and California, while he was serving in the U.S. Navy. The couple first settled in Oklahoma City, then moved to Arkansas City in 1951. A consummate homemaker, Mary Ellen was also a particularly fine seamstress. She was active in the Trinity Episcopal Church choir, Arkansas City Music Club, Mothers Club, and PEO. Later in life she took up the harp and golf. In a newspaper interview at the age of 21 prior to an upcoming concert, Mary Ellen told the interviewer that "a singer has to observe people and their reactions so that she can get true feeling in her singing." People never ceased to fascinate her, and she was particularly adept at and keen to strike up conversations with strangers throughout her life. Survivors include three children, Kathryn Bowers and husband, David, of St. Louis, Carolyn Managan and husband, Michael, of Houston, and Norman Smith, of Arkansas City; and two grandchildren, Elizabeth Managan and husband, Christopher Elsasser, of Silver Spring, Md., and Michelle Managan, of College Station, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Newton C. Smith, a longtime physician in Arkansas City; and her sisters, Dorothy and Charlene.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Trinity Episcopal Church or the Newton and Mary Ellen Scholarship at Cowley County Community College. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Irving "Rich" Richardson

Irving "Rich" Richardson, 83, of Wellington, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at the Via Christi St. Francis Medical Center in Wichita. Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at the Wellington Baptist Temple in Wellington. Interment will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Born Sept. 5, 1924, he was the son of Irving and Olive Spangler Richardson. Rich worked as a mechanic building engines for race cars. He and owned and operated Richardson's Machine Shop in 1970. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy (Wyckoff) Richardson, of Wellington; sons, John Richardson, of Wellington, and Rudy Richardson, of Ann Arbor, Mich., stepchildren, Vicki Rohrer, of Belle Plaine, and Randy Wyckoff, of Wellington; twelve grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Maxine (Frans) Richardson; sisters, Marjorie and Louvella; and brother, Frank Richardson.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society or the Jim Ross Missionary Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hawks Funeral Home in Wellington.

Darlene Naden

Darlene Naden, 70, Wichita, retired Boeing material analyst and former teacher died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at Hillside Christian Church. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. in Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3-5 p.m. Tuesday. Survivors include her husband, William; sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Melanie, of Wichita, Gary and Angela, of Bozeman, Mont., and Dan and Paula, of Gardner, Kan.,; brother, Terry Rountree, Blackwell, Okla.; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Gertrude (Pinkstaff) Rountree; and a son, Kyle.
A memorial has been established with Hillside Christian Church, 8330 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67206. Arrangements are under the direction of the Downing and Lahey Mortuary East, Wichita.

Sylvia Loree Miller

Sylvia Loree Miller, 83, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Mo. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday Jan. 3, 2008, in the Riverview Cemetery in Arkansas City, with the Rev. Jeff Martin officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1-8 p.m. Wednesday. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Born Aug. 25, 1924, in Cedar Vale, she was the daughter of Linn Turner and Ada Belle (Bradshear) Townsend. In Arkansas City, she and her husband were co-owners of Mothers Pie Shop. She was a PBX operator for Santa Fe Railroad for 10 years. In Oswego, she and her husband owned and operated Miller's Liquor Store. Survived by her son, Michael G. Miller, of Austin, Texas, and one daughter, Phyllis Cosby, of Oswego; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert C. Miller; one son, Robert Linn Miller; one daughter, Cora Ruth Miller.
Memorials may be made to the Oswego Library. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Murdock Funeral Home, Oswego.

Dean Pepper

Dean Pepper, 60, Tulsa resident, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, at the Hillcrest Medical Center, Tulsa.
Arrangements are pending and under the direction of the Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.

Randy Lee Benton

Randy Lee Benton, 46, of Arkansas City, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at his residence. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. Brother James "Babe" Standerfer will officiate. Interment will follow in the Parker Cemetery. Randy was born Aug. 22, 1961, in Arkansas City, to Paul A. Benton and Eloise Leora (Martin) Benton. He attended Arkansas City schools. In 1983, he married Kelly McManus and the couple had three children. On July 26, 1989, he married Leila May Hearlson in Arkansas City, where the couple made their home. Randy worked for Rodeo Meats and then General Electric Engine services at Strother Field. Survivors include his wife, Leila Benton, of Arkansas City; son, Steven Benton, of Wichita, and Shawn Benton, of Wichita Falls, Texas; daughter, Kayla Benton, of Arkansas City; stepdaughter, Tricia Cook, of Geuda Springs; stepson, Loren Hearlson, of Arkansas City; brothers, Russell Musson, Brad Musson and Brady Benton; stepbrothers and sisters, Terry Dobbs, Jim Johnson, Marty Johnson, Kari Burnhardt, Bill Johnson and Kelly Smith; mother and stepfather, Eloise and Lee Johnson, of Maple City; six grandchildren, Colten Cook, Lakin Cook, Ashley Langhorst, Levi Langhorst, Preston Hearlson and Jadin Hearlson. Randy was preceded in death by his father, Paul Benton, and grandmother, Rose Anderson.
A memorial has been established with the Cowley County Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Lesia A. Batemon

Lesia A. Batemon, 42, of Howard, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007, at the Greenwood County Medical Center, of Eureka. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, in the Greenlawn Cemetery of Grenola. Born April 15, 1965, in Wichita, she was the daughter of Gilbert A. and Stella M. (Spire) Erbert. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Roger Dale Batemon of the home; two daughters, Keri Duncan, of Winfield, Erin Batemon of the home; a son, Michael Batemon of the home; three brothers, Clifford Burgardt, of Great Bend, Robert Burgardt, of Fairhaven, Vt., Dennis Erbert of Wichita; three sisters, Donna Smith, of Wichita, Betty Frost, of Grandville, N.Y., Anna Buhl, of Colby; one granddaughter, Brooklyn Duncan; and three step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Michael.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

Wallace D. Martin

Wallace D. Martin, 87, Oxford, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2006, at the Riverview Manor and Village in Oxford. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007, at the Oxford First Christian Church with the Rev. Danny Ginn officiating. Interment will be in the Oxford Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 9 p.m. today. Wallace Dean Martin was born Dec. 25, 1919, in Winfield, the son of Ray and Arlene Davis Martin. He and his wife farmed east of Oxford for 48 years. Survivors include his wife, Virginia (Cranston) Martin; nephew, Calvin Davis, of Wichita; and two sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister. Betty Lu Davis; and brother, Bill D. Martin.
A memorial has been established with the Oxford First Christian Church and Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions can be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Oxford Funeral Service, Oxford.

Junie (Jean) Pack

Junie (Jean) Pack, 85, Cedar Vale, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006, at Winfield Rest Haven. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at the Cedar Vale Church of Christ. Interment was in the Cedar Vale Cemetery. Born Jan. 12, 1921, in Grenola, she was the daughter of Willie and Jewel (Appleby) Vaughan. She was a homemaker, had worked as a lab technician for Yoder Brothers in Florida, and as a sales clerk at retail businesses, while in Cedar Vale. Survivors include her son, Dennis, Naples, Fla.; daughter, Kay Myers, Cedar Vale; brothers, Max Vaughan, Cedar Vale, Willie Vaughan Jr., Winfield, Vic Vaughan, Wichita; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers, Haldean, Jay, Wayne and infant brother, Vance.
A memorial has been established for Winfield Rest Haven or the Cedar Vale Church of Christ. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wheeler Funeral Home, Cedar Vale.

Georgia M. (Bates) Cyre

Georgia M. (Bates) Cyre, 74, Arkansas City, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2006, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Interment was in the Parker Cemetery. Georgia was born May 26, 1932, in Purcell, Okla., to James K. Bates and Carrie P. (Miller) Bates. Georgia was reared and educated in Ark City. She graduated from Ark City High School. On July 10, 1956, she married Duane Cyre. The couple made their home in Ark City. She worked as a clerk at DiVall Liquor store for many years. Georgia was a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband, Duane, of the home; two daughters, Rebecca Blankenship, Lana Vidricksen and her husband, Steve, all of Ark City; brother, James C. Bates; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two infant daughters; and her brother, D.G. Bates.
A memorial has been established with the American Cancer Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Evelyn B. Wright

Evelyn B. Wright, 87, Ponca City resident, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2007, at the Ponca City Medical Center, in Ponca City. The memorial service will be held at graveside at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007, in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Evelyn was born on April 14, 1919, in Arkansas City, to Mont Connelly and Ethie Alice (Cain) Connelly. She was raised and received her education in the Arkansas City area. On June 16, 1935, she married Smith J. "Smitty" Wright in Enid, Okla. After their marriage, they moved to Philadelphia, Pa., and later to Corpus Christi, Texas, while Smitty was working for the Armed Forces. In 1948, they moved to Ponca City for a short time and then returned in 1956 where they have resided since. She was a longtime director of the 55 and older club. Survivors include two sons, Terry Wright and wife, Patricia, of Phoenix, Ariz., and David Wright and wife, Tammy, of Ponca City; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Freya; a son, Lonnie; one granddaughter; four brothers; and two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation/ Heart Fund, 825 NE 13th, Oklahoma City, OK 73104. Arrangements are under the direction of Trout Funeral Home and Crematory, Ponca City.
