Edward 'Eddie' Betz 1914-2001
EL DORADO - Edward "Eddie" Betz, 87, died Oct. 17 at Via Christi St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita. He was born April 3, 1914, in Bison, the son of Jake and Anna Betz. He married
Leona Ruggles Feb. 11, 1950, in Great Bend. She died Nov. 26, 1993. A resident of El Dorado since 1978, coming from Ness County, he was a retired farmer and cattleman. Betz was a member of American Legion Capt. Edgar Dale Post 81 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Fred Priestly Post 1174, both of El Dorado. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include two brothers, Merle Betz of Liberal and Donnie Betz of Jetmore; and three sisters, Marchtella Stegman of Loveland, Colo., Marcheta Hogsett of Ness City and Marjorie Thomas of Denver, Colo. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Harold Betz, Jake Betz Jr., Clifford Betz and Howard Betz. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Great Bend cemetery in Great Bend. Marlene Joan Urban 1934-2001
TYNDALL, S.D. - Marlene Joan Urban, 67, died Oct. 10 at Tyndall Good Samaritan Center in Tyndall. She was born June 27, 1934, in Bison, the daughter of Leo and Veronica Stramel Urban. A resident of Tyndall, coming from Great Bend, Norton, Moline, Ill., and Springfield, S.D., she was a retired Dominican Sister, working as a student teacher and nurses aid. She also worked as a clerk for Duckwalls in Norton, Thriftown Discount Store and K-Mart Corporation, both of Moline. Survivors include her mother of Norton; two brothers, Eugene Urban of Albert and Larry Urban of Norton; and one sister, Eileen Jaeger of Tyndall. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin Urban and Vernon Urban; and one sister, Clarice Urban. Family memorial will be at a later date. Cremation has taken place. Donald Biegler 1930-2001
TOPEKA - Donald Biegler, 70, died Oct. 17 at his home in Topeka. He was born Dec. 18, 1930, in Larned, the son of Henry and Olivia M. Heydt Biegler. He was a 1948 graduate of Larned High School. He married
Carole E. Barker June 19, 1954, in Great Bend. She died Feb. 14, 1991. A resident of Topeka, coming from Salina and Horton, he worked as a retail manager for Duckwall Department and Dime Stores in Syracuse and Horton, retiring in 1987. He then worked as a department manager for Wal-Mart in Salina for nine years, retiring in 1995. Biegler was a member of Horton United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Korea. Survivors include one son, Scott Biegler of Assaria; one daughter, Brenda Volz of Topeka; two brothers, Bill Biegler of Salina and Buck Biegler of Panama City, Fla.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Jean Holler. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Great Bend cemetery in Great Bend. Ruth Elaine Randolph, 84, of Great Bend, died Oct. 16 at Integrated Heath Services in Great Bend. She was born Oct. 12, 1917, in Lanham, Neb., the daughter of Milan and Elsie Foster Spillman. She married
Ernest Randolph July 31, 1937, in Oberlin. He died Sept. 17, 1991. A resident of Great Bend, coming from Ness City and Allison, she was a restaurant worker and homemaker. Survivors include one son, Dale Randolph of Great Bend; one daughter, Deloma Foley of Elk City, Okla.; nine grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Dorothy Lewis. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home Chapel in Hoxie, with Benny Rosell officiating. LARNED - Clarice M. Cotton, 84, died Oct. 16 at Larned Health Care and Living Center in Larned. She was born Jan. 13, 1917, in Sedgwick County, the daughter of Charles and Roberta Laughlin Young. She married
Lester C. Cotton Feb. 14, 1934. He died April 6, 1984. A resident of Larned since 1936, coming from Sedgwick County, she was a secretary for her husband's welding business. Mrs. Cotton was a member of First Baptist Church and Larned Belles, both of Larned. Survivors include two sons, Joseph Cotton of Wichita and Bill Cotton of Hollywood, Fla.; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Larned cemetery with the Rev. John Hester officiating. CLARINDA, Iowa - Howard Watts, 78, died Oct. 15 at Westridge Care Center in Clarinda. He was born Oct. 22, 1922, in Topeka, the son of Cloid and Donna Kemper Watts. He was a graduate of Perry High School in Perry. He married
Lucille Barrett Nov. 28, 1941, in Topeka. A resident of Clarinda, coming from Kansas, he was a fiberglass worker in a boat factory. Watts was a U.S. Army Air Corp. veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Jerry Watts of Rose Hill; two daughters, Barb Livengood of Clarinda and Pat Jenkins of Overland Park; two brothers, Carl Watts of California and Jack Watts of Colorado; one half-brother, Danny Watts of Texas; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Watts. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda, with the Rev. Jeff Dowell officiating. August J. "Gus" Collins Jr., 73, of Great Bend, died Oct. 15 at his home. He was born July 15, 1928, in Aurora, the son of August J. Sr. and Clara Georgia Guilmete Collins. He married
Joyce Ann Schlehuber Aug. 7, 1950, in Concordia. She died Nov. 6, 1972. A resident of Great Bend since 1962, coming from Concordia, he was a systems dispatcher for Western Power and Light at the Arthur Mullergren Plant, retiring in 1991 after 32 years of service. Collins was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and American Legion, both in Great Bend. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving with the 103rd Seabees. Survivors include two sons, Leslie John Collins of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Wesley James Collins of Hutchinson; four daughters, Kathy Ann Norlin of Great Bend, Sharon Kaye George of Lehigh, Lydia Jeanette Rippie of Emporia and Tyra Rulee Byerly of Hillsboro; one stepdaughter, Rita Gail Collins of Salina; his companion, Tina Weber of Great Bend; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Ron LaBarge, Louis Collins, Bill Collins and Lawrence Collins; seven sisters, Hazel LaBarge Mullen, Irene LaBarge Tieking, Bernice LaBarge Frybarger, Louise Collins Lawrence, Anna Collins Marcotte, Lucy Collins Hart and Mary Collins Baltazer; and one granddaughter. Vigil service will be at 7:30 Thursday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend. Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Warren Stecklein officiating. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Dale Thomas, Merle Thomas and Emit Thomas Jr.; and two sisters, Thelma Cook and Daisy Younger. Iva Rose Barraclough Sept. 22, 1979, in Great Bend. A resident of Hudson since 1981, he worked as a truck driver for Stafford County Flour Mills and Rawhide Trucking in Hutchinson and as an oil field worker. Hull was a member of American Legion of Stafford. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. Survivors include his wife of the home; his parents of St. John; two brothers, Eugene G. Hull of Parsons and Carl J. Hull of St. John; and two sisters, B.J. Delgadillo of St. John and Gina McKown of Arkansas City. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Minnis Chapel in St. John, with Al Hatten officiating. CARMEL, Calif. - Susan P. Long, 66, died Oct. 2 at her residence in Carmel. She was born Feb. 14, 1935, in Topeka. A resident of Carmel for the last 32 years, she was an art teacher at Carmel Adult School in Carmel. She was a founding member of Monterey Peninsula Art Foundation and a member of the Carmel Art Association. Survivors include two sons, Curtis and Paul; one daughter, Lillian; her mother, Lillian; one sister, Elizabeth; and three grandsons. Memorial service will be from 2-4 p.m. Nov. 3 at Carl Cherry Center for the Arts in Carmel, at the north-west corner of Guadelupe and Forth streets. Burial was Oct. 10 at Great Bend cemetery. PLAINVILLE - Bennie Schmidt, 86, died Oct. 16 at Plainville Rural Hospital in Plainville. He was born Sept. 2, 1915, in Catherine, the son of Raymond A. and Dorothy Leikam Schmidt. He married
Ann Schmidt Sept. 13, 1938, in Severin. A resident of Plainville since 1955, coming from Norton, he was a self-employed tank truck driver in the oil fields for 12 years and worked for B and J Tank Service for 18 years, as well as being a farmer in Ellis and Norton County. Schmidt was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, both of Plainville, former charter member of Swing N Wheels Square Dance Club and past vice-president of Kansas State Square Dance Association. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Robert Schmidt of Salina; three daughters, Janice Benedick of Plainville, Linette Mills of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Marla Doubrava of Moberly, Mo.; two brothers, Willard Schmidt of New Castle, Okla., and Marcellus Schmidt of Englewood, Colo.; three sisters, Mary Esther Munk of Quinter, Frances Parker of Hays and Lillian Bennett of Augusta, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Bernard W. Schmidt; one daughter, Raye Ann Smock; four brothers, Clarence Schmidt, Elmer Schmidt, Alfred Schmidt and Dan Schmidt; and two sisters, Martina Maska and Annabelle Leitz. A Sacred Heart Ladies Guild and Daughters of Isabella Rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:30 p.m., all at the church. Patsy Jean Gullett. A resident of Macksville, he worked as a measurement technician for Northern Natural Gas Company, oil pumper for Sante Fe Pipe and Supply, and as a carpenter. Gullett was a member of Macksville Christian Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars in St. John. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, James William Gullett of San Antonio, Texas; three daughters, Mary L. Klee of Shasta Lake, Calif., Sharon M. Torkelson of Beaubier, Saskatchewan, Canada, and Jane L. McGinty of Derby; one brother, Loyd Gullett of Wynona, Okla.; one sister, Ellena Grimes of Borger; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Terry was a member of First Christian Church in Goodland, American Legion in Colby, Elks Lodge 1528, Lions Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars - Lowell Coleman Post 1133. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Leland Terry Jr. of Great Bend and Brett Terry of Kansas City; four daughters, Lucille Nasworthy of Whitehouse, Fla., Kathy Schott of Springdale, Ark., Stacy Colby of Goodland and Susan Probis of St. Francis; five brothers, Emerson Cecil Terry of Aurora, Colo., John Terry Jr. of Atwood, Bill Terry of Great Bend, Derald Dean Terry of Goodland and Dwayne Meireis of Scott City; and 10 grandchildren.
