McPHERSON - Genevieve C. Henry, 76, died July 16 at Memorial Hospital in McPherson. She was born Sept. 4, 1924, in McPherson, the daughter of Erick Bamhart and Ella Christine Larsen Berg. She was a graduate of Windom High School in Windom and attended Salt City Business College in Hutchinson. She married
Jack Henry Jr. Dec. 1, 1943, in Wichita. He died Sept. 8, 1972. A resident of McPherson, coming from Galva, Liberal and Great Bend, she worked as a secretary and business owner and partner. Mrs. Henry was a member of New Gottland Lutheran Church, McPherson Kitchenettes, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715, Ladies Auxiliary and American Legion Post 24 Ladies Auxiliary, all of McPherson. Survivors include three sons, Vernon Henry of Hillsboro, Dean P. Henry of Little River and Edward G. Henry of Lindsborg; one daughter, Kristine Mcildoon of McPherson; one brother, Charles A. Berg of Windom; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Linnea Berg. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home Chapel in McPherson, with the Rev. Ramona H. Carlin officiating. Kay Louise Burgat Bitter 1943-2001
EUROPE - Kay Louise Burgat Bitter, 58 of Scottsdale, Ariz. died July 10 while traveling through Europe. She was born Jan. 25, 1943, in Great Bend, the daughter of Ted and Elsie Burgat. She attended Hoisington High School and Kansas State University, and has degrees from Wichita State University and Arizona State University. She married
Gary Bitter Aug. 19, 1962 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Hoisington. A resident of Scottsdale, coming from Hoisington, she worked as a preschool teacher with the Scottsdale School District for many years Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Steve Bitter of San Anselmo, Calif., Mike Bitter and Matt Bitter, both of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one brother, Gary Burgat of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one sister Becky Parks of Roanoke, Texas; and five grandchildren. She is preceded in death by one brother, Charles "Chuck" Burgat. Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, at United Methodist Church in Scottsdale. McPHERSON - Florence E. Byers, 89, died July 15 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. She was born Jan. 1, 1912, in Inman, the daughter of William C. and Katherine Dirksen Ratzlaff. She was a 1931 graduate of Inman High School. She married
Virgil R. Byers Oct. 22, 1932, in Newton. He died Dec. 30, 1961. A resident of McPherson, coming from Hudson, she was a homemaker, worked in the produce department at Dillons, and was a cook at McPherson College for 10 years. Mrs. Byers was a member of First Baptist Church and Friendly Hour Club, both of McPherson. Survivors include two sons, William Byers of Kingman and Larry Byers of Hutchinson; one daughter, Nancee Scherich of Wichita; two brothers, Carl Ratzlaff of McPherson and Ernest Ratzlaff of Morrilton, Ark.; one sister, Mable Rodgers of Marquette; seven grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Totten and Irene Ray; and one grandson, Mark Byers. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. PRESTON - Grace H. Brown, 86, died July 15 at her home in Preston. She was born April 17, 1915, in Preston, the daughter of Frank and Sadie Leroux Selle. She graduated from Southwestern College in Winfield. She married
Charles Leslie Brown Dec. 30, 1941, in Arnold. He died June 8, 1998. A resident of Preston, she was a retired music teacher. Mrs. Brown was a member of United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, both of Preston, Music Club, Rebekah Lodge, Extension Homemakers Unit, and Retired Teachers Association, all of Pratt, and the National Education Association. Survivors include two sons, Kermit Brown and Stan Brown, both of Preston; one daughter, Brenda Riffey of Pratt; and three grandchildren. Galen W. Unruh Aug. 31, 1934. A resident of Hutchinson since 1981, coming from Pawnee Rock, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Unruh was a member of New Jerusalem Church in Pawnee Rock, Ladies Aide Society, Barton County Art Association and Pawnee County Art Association. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Stephen Unruh of Hutchinson and Stanley Unruh of San Antonio, Texas; three daughters, Janice Beougher of Kingman, Carole Bowman of Pawnee Rock and Sharon Billings of Milford, Ohio; three brothers, Wendell Nairn of Aurora, Calif., Loren Nairn and Gene Nairn, both of Great Bend; four sisters, Fern Walden of Alaska, Elva Petz of Overland Park, Winifred Pierce of Albuquerque, N.M., and Willa Smith of Fort Collins, Colo.; 18 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. Agnes Barbara Friebus Nov. 28, 1949, in Stuttgart. She died May 28, 1979. A resident of Russell, he worked as an oil field roughneck and in maintenance at Thies Packing Company in Great Bend. Ekstrom was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Russell. Survivors include three nephews, Arvin Peterson of Knoxville, Iowa, LaMoyne Peterson of Kinsley and Eugene Peterson of Hutchinson; and one niece, Euline Rowe of Wichita. GREELEY, Colo. - Laurie R. Marvin, 63, of Greeley, died July 12 as a result of a traffic accident on I-70 in western Kansas. She was born Feb. 20, 1938, in Seminole, Okla., the daughter of Rizal and Laurie Flemming Marr. She graduated from Great Bend High School and attended Dominican School of Nursing. She married
William Marvin 1964 in Indianapolis. He preceded her in death. A resident of Greeley, coming from Great Bend, she worked as a nurse for 35 years at St. Anthony's North hospital in Westminster. Mrs. Marvin was a member of First Christian Church and PEO Sisterhood, Chapter FZ, both in Greeley. Survivors include two sons, David Marvin of Have de Grace, Md., and Andy Marvin of Kersey, Colo.; one daughter, Beth Heide of Prairie Village; one brother, Robert Marr of Indianapolis, Ind.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Patty Tuck. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Highland cemetery in Northglenn, Colo. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Mary J. Bruno, 66, of Great Bend died July 12 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born March 31, 1935, at Barnsdall, Okla., the daughter of Miles Velton and Maudie Lee Jones Anthony. She married
J.B. Bruno March 1, 1952, at Ellinwood. A resident of Great Bend, having been a longtime Barton County resident, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Bruno was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, a former member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellinwood. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Vincent Bruno of Great Bend; two daughters, Terri Klein and Sharon Vanaman, both of Great Bend; one brother, Billy Joe Anthony of El Dorado; six sisters, La Vona Bowen of Luray, Lee Nora Danield of Garden City, Sandra Orr of Denton, Texas, Diana Howard, Lana Slack and Ramona Tracy, all of Great Bend; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Jack Anthony, Robert Anthony, Johnnie Lee Anthony and Donald Anthony; and four sisters, Opal Casper, Wanda Mason, Delpha Wilson and Carolyn Anthony. LA CROSSE - James C. Moran, 81, of McCracken died July 12 at Rush County Memorial Hospital in La Crosse. He was born Sept. 16, 1919, in Nekoma, the son of William P. and Rosa Marak Moran. He married
Isabel R. Malone, Dec. 5, 1942, in Fort Pickett, Va. A lifelong resident of Rush County, he was a farmer, stockman and grain dealer at Hargrave. Moran was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of La Crosse. He was a graduate of St. Joseph Military Academy of Hays. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II, serving in Europe with the Third Armored Division, receiving the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in Belgium. Survivors include his wife, of the home; four daughters, Roslyn Bethke of Shawnee, Marla Williams of Topeka, Gail Mora of Scottsbluff, Neb., and Nancy Ong of College Station, Texas; one brother, Bill Moran of McCracken; four sisters, Marcelline Wendling of Halstead, Mary Ann Moran of McCracken, L. Jean Moran of Overland Park, Rita Pamilia of Danville, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by one son, James E. Moran; and a brother, Vincent Moran. Lillian Keller Jan. 12, 1991, in Portland, Ore. A resident of St. John, he was a telegrapher and depot agent for Santa Fe Railroad and a minister of the Gospel, preaching at several churches. Keller was a member of Veterans of Foreign War and past Mason, both in St. John. He was a Golden Gloves boxing champion. He was a U.S. Army Air Corp. veteran of World War II in the Pacific Theater. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Kenneth Keller of St. John; three stepsons, Greg Roberts of Mukilteo, Wash., John Roberts of Hayword, Calif., and Scott Roberts of Cascade Locks, Ore.; two brothers, Don Keller of St. John and Wayne Keller of Dodge City; one sister, Ruth Campbell of St. John; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
