Samuel F. Beckwith 1922-2001
LARNED - Samuel F. Beckwith, 78, died July 21 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 11, 1922, in Hiawatha, the son of Gale D. and Elsie A. Brown Beckwith. He married
E. Nadine Schade June 11, 1950, in Alta Vista. She died Oct. 30, 1999. A resident of Pawnee County since 1963, coming from Anthony, he was an American Baptist minister in the towns of Rozel, Tribune, Plains, Ulysses, Anthony, Kingman, Greensburg, Marysville, Peabody, Enterprise and Larned. Beckwith was a member of Rozel Baptist Church and Rozel Lions Club. He directed many children's summer church camps for more than 35 years. Survivors include one son, Tom W. Beckwith of Larned; one daughter, Elsie Marie Spencer of Minneola; one sister, Betty Christopherson of Alburquerque, N.M.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Dwight Beckwith, Bob Beckwith and Tom Beckwith. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned, with the Rev. John Hester officiating. Burial will be at Larned cemetery in Larned. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday, all at the mortuary. Virginia Lee Krug 'Tuny' Lane 1920-2001
HOISINGTON - Virginia Lee Krug "Tuny" Lane, 81, died July 22 at Specialty Hospital of Mid-America in Overland Park. She was born April 27, 1920, in Hoisington, the daughter of Leo and Beatrice Hammond Krug. She married
Grant J. Lane June 14, 1939, in Hoisington. He died Jan. 5, 2000. A lifelong resident of Hoisington, she was a homemaker and retired field secretary for Federal Crop Insurance Corporation. Mrs. Lane was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Altar Society, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 286, former member of USD 431 school board, Business and Professional Women, PEO, Civic Club, SACS and several bridge clubs, all of Hoisington. She was also past state president of American Legion Auxiliary, former Girls State and Girls Nation counselor, and a member of 8/40. Survivors include one son, Kevin Lane of Washington, D.C.; three daughters, Nancy Lane of Russell, Patty Carpenter of Alexandria, Va., and Mary Bea Littrell of Washington, D.C.; and two grandsons. Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, followed by an Altar Society rosary, both at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. George R. Farney 1912-2001
WILSON - George R. Farney, 89, died July 21 at Wilson Nursing Center in Wilson. He was born Sept. 8, 1912, in Lincoln County, the son of Dennis Sr. and Lena Kasper Farney. He married
Rose Macek Sept. 25, 1934, in Wilson. A lifetime resident of the Wilson area, he was a farmer, stockman and auctioneer. Farney was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, both of Wilson. Survivors include his wife of the home; and three brothers, Dennis J. Farney of Wilson, Emil Farney of Wichita and Norbert Farney of Sylvan Grove. Parish vigil will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Foster Mortuary in Wilson. Danette M. Gaitros 1979-2001
WILSON - Danette M. Gaitros, 22, died July 20 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. She was born Feb. 27, 1979, in Robinson, Texas, the daughter of Donald L. and Linda Vopat Gaitros. A resident of Wilson most her life, she was a Kansas State University student. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church of Wilson, Circle K college sorority of Manhattan and Baylor Riding Club of Baylor, Texas. Survivors include her mother, Linda Weber of Wilson; her father and stepmother, Vikci Gaitros of Robinson; three brothers, Frank J. Weber of Wilson, Jeff Rogers of Robinson and Brad Rogers of Waco, Texas; six sisters, Cyria Green of Halstead, Angela Nawrocki of Henderson, Nev., Jennifer Gaitros and Kathy Dolff, both of Denver, Colo., Bettina Gaitros of Tolar, Texas, and Joanna Gaitros of Robinson; and her grandmother, Marie J. Ellen Bernice Musil 1914-2001
BURDETT - Ellen Bernice Musil, 86, died July 21 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Joseph Long Term Care in Larned. She was born Sept. 1, 1914, in Sylvia, the daughter of Hugh L. and Mary Hazel Stevenson Brownlee. She was a graduate of Sylvia High School, attended Hutchinson Junior College, was a 1937 graduate of Kansas State University and did graduate studies at Fort Hays State University and Emporia State University. She married
Elmer Ray Musil July 25, 1945, in Zenith. A resident of Burdett since 1957, she was a retired home economist, teacher at several Kansas schools including 16 years at Pawnee Heights, and a correspondent since 1983 for the Larned Tiller and Toiler and Jetmore Republican newspapers . Mrs. Musil attended United Methodist Church, was a member of Pathfinders Sunday school class, United Methodist Women, American Legion Auxiliary and Shiley Homemakers and Burdett Seniors, all of Burdett, Eastern Star of Marysville, Daughters of American Revolution, life member of KSU Alumni Association, an alumni board member of KSU College of Human Ecology, Kansas Master 4-H Club and Kansas Master Farm Homemakers Guild, serving as president. She was a past community project leader for Burdett Blue Ribbons 4-H Club. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Elmer Lee Musil of Burdett; and one grandson. She was preceded in death by three brothers, William Brownlee, George Brownlee and Donald Brownlee; and one sister, Virginia Brownlee. Clinton K. Turner 1927-2001
HUTCHINSON - Clinton K. Turner, 73, died July 20 at Hospice Residential Care Center in Hutchinson. He was born Nov. 27, 1927, near Sylvia, the son of Thomas and Verda Barker Turner. He was a 1946 graduate of Sylvia High School. He married
Dorothy Mitchell Coffey Feb. 13, 1990, in Santa Barbara, Calif. A resident of Hutchinson, coming from Stafford and Creede, Colo., he was the retired owner of Turner Construction of Stafford and Creede. Turner was a member of Southwest Tool Collectors, Midwest Tool Collectors Association and Moose Lodge 982 of Hutchinson. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Tom Turner and Dave Turner, both of Stafford; two daughters, Brenda Fuller of Stafford and Peggy Miller of Caldwell; one stepson, George "Bud" Montford Jr. of Hutchinson; one stepdaughter, Judy Dodge of Albuquerque, N.M.; one brother, Milton Turner of Hemet, Calif.; one sister, Nina Sheppard of Hutchinson; eight grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. HOISINGTON - Francis Dail "Pete" Peterson, 84, died July 17 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born Jan. 20, 1917, in Swedeburg, Mo., the son of Charles and Harriet Isabelle Kissinger Peterson. He married
Viola Beck Feb. 20, 1960, in Hoisington. A resident of Hoisington, coming from Osawatomie, he was a retired conductor for Missouri Pacific Railroad. Peterson was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign War Post 7428, member and past president of United Transportation Union, NARVRE, Masonic Lodge 331 A.F. and A.M., and Lake Barton Golf Club, all of Hoisington. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre. Survivors include his wife of the home; and one son, Bradley A. Peterson of Overland Park. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Obed Peterson, Howard Peterson and Clair Peterson; and two sisters, Gladys Mayer and Nellie Pummill. Funeral was today at the church, with the Rev. LORRAINE - Harold E. Dobrinski, 80, died July 18 at his residence in rural Lorraine. He was born Oct. 3, 1920, in Lorraine, the son of Charles "Charlie" and Theresa Preuss Dobrinski. He was a graduate of Lorraine High School and Sterling College. He married
Marion Hicks May 5, 1946, in Madison, Wis. She died July 10, 1995. A lifelong resident of Lorraine, he was a farmer, owner of Sunflower Antiques, and a school teacher, all in Lorraine. Dobrinski was a member of First Baptist Church in Lorraine, past president of the Farm Bureau in Ellsworth, American Legion in Holyrood and Gideons International. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps. veteran of World War II. Survivors include one son, Mark Dobrinski of Larraine; one daughter, Cynthia Granger of Martinsville, Va.; one sister, Leora Phillips of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Dobrinski and Carl Dobrinski; and one sister, Hertha Strella. Doonan was a member of St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, both of Hoisington, and was a clerk of Eureka township board. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Roy Doonan of Great Bend and Glen Doonan of Hoisington; two daughters, Faye Doonan and Darlene Stoss, both of Hoisington; two brothers, Robert Doonan of Quinlan, Texas, and Wendell Doonan of Great Bend; two sisters, Margueriet McAnulla of Great Bend and Evelyn Graham of Las Vegas, Nev.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son Willard Ray Doonan; and one granddaughter, Melinda Stoss. Family rosary will be at 7 tonight at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. RUSSELL - W.L. 'Larry' Nelson, 84, died July 18 at HMC St. Anthony Hospital in Hays. He was born Aug. 19, 1916, at Concord, Neb., the son of Laurence Gilbert and Ella Florence Thompson Nelson. He attended college at Lincoln, Neb. He married
Gloria D. Dole April 19, 1942, at La Crosse. A resident of Russell since 1979, coming from Ft. Morgan, Colo., he was a meter engineer. Nelson was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge and Shrine Club, all of Russell, Consitory and ISIS Shrine and Legion of Honor, both of Salina. He was a captain in the U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II; he was a B-29 pilot. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Laurence Nelson and Jeff Nelson, both of Salina, and Robert Nelson of Greeley, Colo.; two daughters, Linda Belau of Greeley and Susan Silz of Ft. Morgan; one sister, Jean Reinhard of Broken Bow, Neb.; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Janet Sue Nelson; three brothers, Everett Nelson, Quentin Nelson and Keith Nelson; and one sister, Elinor Clough. BICKNELL, Ind. - Bina E. Travis, 99, died July 17 at Beverly Manor Nursing Home in Seal Beach, Calif. She was born July 5, 1902, in Stafford County, the daughter of John A. and Susannah Schmidt Unruh. She married
Albert C. Travis Oct. 17, 1926, at Great Bend. He died May 27, 1984. A longtime resident of Bicknell before moving to California in July 1995, she was a stenographer and owner of Bicknell Greenhouse from 1935-65. Mrs. Travis was a member of Bicknell United Methodist Church for 60 years, Who Do Sunday School Class, Mt. Olive OES, American Legion Auxiliary and PEO, all of Bicknell. Survivors include two sons, John Travis in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., and Richard Travis in Coopersburg, Pa.; two brothers, Lee Unruh of Bucklin and Vernon Unruh of Larned; one sister, Martha Hahn of Hutchinson; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest Unruh and George Unruh; and three sisters, Evelyn Wyman, Pearl Peck and Alice Clarkson. Kelly B. Puckett, 77, of Great Bend, died July 15 at Integrated Health Services in Great Bend. He was born Aug. 12, 1923, in Kiowa, the son of Burney and Mary Dillard Puckett. He was a 1942 graduate of Great Bend High School. He married
Maxine Bush. A long time resident of Great Bend, he was a retired assembly line worker. Puckett was a member of First Christian Church in Great Bend. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Don Puckett of Geneseo, Ill. and Todd Puckett of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; two sisters, Maxine Oller of Great Bend and Billie Jean Lord of Mobile, Ala.; and two grandchildren.
