Harry Eugene 'Gene' Tomlinson 1930-2001
GARFIELD - Harry Eugene "Gene" Tomlinson, 70, died June 15 in Winslow, Ariz. He was born Sept. 28, 1930, in Larned, the son of Harry and Viola Davis Tomlinson. He married
Lois Jeanie Bulkley Aug. 31, 1952, in Larned. She preceded him in death. A resident of Winslow, coming from Garfield, he was a retired farmer and had owned and operated Tomlinson Implement in Rozel. Tomlinson was a member of Bucklin Free Methodist Church. Survivors include one son, Charles "Dave" Tomlinson of Phoenix, Ariz.; three daughters, Donna Ruff and Denice Tomlinson, both of Hemet, Calif., and Diane Bilyeu of Arizona; four sisters, Evelyn Zimmer of Hutchinson, Marjory Nazarenus of Dodge City, Virginia Johnson of Quinlin, Texas, and Jeanie Tomlinson of Hemet ; and seven grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. Burial will be at Garfield Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Marjorie Hoke 1929-2001
DORRANCE - Marjorie Hoke, 71, died June 13 at Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg, Mo. She was born Sept. 8, 1929, in Barton County, the daughter of Hubert and Helen Hikle Zorn. She was a graduate of Bunker Hill High School. She married
Larry K. Hoke Jan. 23, 1953, in Russell. A longtime resident of the Bunker Hill area, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Hoke was a member of Bunker Hill United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband of the home: two sons, Brent Hoke of Warrensburg and Randy Hoke of Garden Grove, Calif.; one daughter, LaRee Bretz of Lucas; two sisters, Alice Zorn of Glendora, Calif., and Leona Robinson of Great Bend; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Zorn and Vernon Zorn; and four sisters, Gertrude Loper, Bridget Pittser, Sally Cates and Loretta Black. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Pohlman's Mortuary Memorial Chapel in Russell with the Rev. Earl Haggard officiating. Burial will be at Bunker Hill Cemetery. Mildred M. Howell 1920-2001
McPHERSON - Mildred M. Howell, 80, died June 15 at Memorial Hospital in McPherson. She was born Oct. 24, 1920, in Rozel, the daughter of Herman D. and Theresa R. Taylor Merkel. She was a graduate of Larned High School. She married
Weldon G. Howell April 9, 1939, in Rozel. A resident of McPherson since 1999, coming from rural St. John, she was a homemaker, former cashier and payroll clerk for Montgomery Wards in Larned, retired office manager for the Stafford County Extension Service and farmed with her husband in Pawnee and Stafford counties for more than 60 years. Mrs. Howell attended Church of the Brethren in McPherson and was a member of Eden Valley Church of the Brethren in St. John where she served as a Sunday school teacher, clerk of the church board and was a member of the Ladies Aid Group. She was a project leader for 4-H programs as well as a member of the Extension Units and Golden Belt Campers Association. Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Nolan Howell of Great Bend and Norman Howell of Freemont, Calif.; two daughters, Veneta Ediger of McPherson and Janice Wokaty of Jacksonville, Ark.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Vera Merkel and Dorothy Kirchgassner. Service of memory will be at 7 tonight at Glidden-Ediger Funeral Home Chapel in McPherson. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church in rural St. John with the Revs. W. David Albright and Matthew Spurgin officiating. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Larned Cemetery. HOISINGTON - Betty Lou Klusener, 69, died June 16 at Hutchinson Hospital. She was born Nov. 21, 1931, at Broken Arrow, Okla., the daughter of John and Elva Pendengraph Medlock. She married
Kenneth Klusener Sept. 26, 1980, at Wagoner, Okla. A resident of Hoisington for 20 years, coming from Broken Arrow, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Klusener was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Hoisington. Survivors include her husband of the home; one brother, LeRoy Medlock of Claremore, Okla.; and one sister, Madge Edwards of Broken Arrow. She was preceded in death by two brothers. HOISINGTON - Clarence Leon Bitter, 70, died June 13 in Denver, Colo. He was born Aug. 23, 1930, in rural Hoisington, the son of Herbert and Elizabeth Waymaster Bitter. A resident of Hoisington since 1947, coming from the family farm near Susank, he was an employee at Spears-Lehning Buick. Bitter was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Hoisington. Frances A. Lewis 1915-2001
LARNED - Frances A. Lewis, 85, died June 13 at The Fairways at Brookline Village in State College, Pa. She was born Oct. 15, 1915, in Aberdeen, Idaho, the daughter of Louis C. and Edith N. Davies Aicher. She was a 1937 graduate of Kansas State University. She married
Walter Morris Lewis Dec. 5, 1937, in Hays. He died Aug. 3, 1987. A resident of Larned, she was a homemaker and partner in Alfalfa Lawn Farms in rural Larned. Mrs. Lewis was a member of Presbyterian Church in Larned, a Sunday school teacher and choir member; a member of Delta Delta social sorority, a former president of the Home Economics Executive Committee, and a 4-H program leader and judge in Pawnee County. She was a Danforth Scholar and was awarded the 1985 KSU Distinguished Service in Home Economics Award and the 1998 Alumni Medallion Award, recognizing humanitarian service and the university's highest alumni award. She was the Kansas Master Homemaker in 1951 and helped organize the American Junior Hereford Association in 1967. Survivors include one son, Robert Lewis of Larned; one daughter, Martha Starling of State College; one brother, George Aicher of Eureka; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Louis Aicher. Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Jim Hawthorne officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Harry Edmund 'Hap' Jackson 1910-2001
EUREKA - Harry Edmund "Hap" Jackson, 90, died June 13 at Medicalodge in Eureka. He was born Sept. 20, 1910, on the Clark ranch in northwest Greenwood County, the son of Harry Herbert and Margaret Augusta Lehmann Jackson. He attended Flint Ridge School. He married
Kathryn Margaret Palmer June 1, 1932, in Marion. A resident of the Upper Fall River community, he was a rancher. Jackson was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Eureka and served on the Lutheran Church Council, South Salem Township Board, American Soil Conservation Service, Soil Conservation Board, Farm Bureau Board, Greenwood County Extension Council, Greenwood County Cattlemen's Association and was a 4-H leader. He helped organize the Rural Watershed District 21, serving as president for 22 years; he worked with Ag in the Classroom for 23 years; and he received many awards for his ranching and conservation practices, including the Kansas Farm Family of the Year Award. He was selected for sculpture in the 1986 National Ag Hall of fame at Bonner Springs. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Edd Jackson of Great Bend; two daughters, Kathy Drake of Wichita and Margie Swisher of Independence; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter; two brothers; and two sisters. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Jeff Ungs officiating. RANSOM - Donald William Albers, 80, died June 13 at Grisell Memorial Hospital in Ransom. He was born April 21, 1921, in Hargrave, the son of Albert and Gladys Williams Albers. He married
Marguerite Mae Seuser Sept. 16, 1945, in Bison. A resident of Ransom, coming from Hargrave, he was a farmer and rancher. Albers was a member of First Mennonite Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7972, Senior Citizen Center, church board and Board of Education, all of Ransom. He was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Albert "Butch" Albers of Ransom and William Donald Albers of Bison; two daughters, Donna Marie Klizke of Glendale, Ariz., and Linda Dietz of Hudson; two brothers, Wilbur Albers of Ransom and E.B. Albers of Wichita; two sisters, Lotus Foos of Wichita and Marcalee Boatright of Oklahoma; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Isla Carter, Glenna Leatherman and Alda Munn. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Eric Buller officiating. Anthony X. Doll April 17, 1934, in Ellinwood. He died Aug. 21, 1959. A resident of Dodge City since 1948, coming from Wright, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Doll was a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, Altar Society, DCCW, Guadalupe Parish Council, Zelta Lambda Chapter, Women Democrats and Old Timers Club, all of Dodge City. Survivors include one son, Larry Doll of Loveland, Colo.; four daughters, Mary Lou Buford of Las Vegas, Nev., Annette Burghart of Wright, Darlene Dvorak of Burlington, Colo., and Diann Young of Littleton, Colo.; two brothers, Leroy Huschka of Mesa, Ariz., and Martin Huschka of Garden City; four sisters, Frances Sessler and Leona Klein, both of Ellinwood, Ida Rziha and Evelyn Behr, both of Hoisington; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Eugene Huschka, Frank Huschka, Edward Huschka, Albert Huschka and Leonard Huschka. Staudinger was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church in Dubuque, Holy Family Catholic Church in Odin and Holy Name Society. Survivors include three sons, Gerald Staudinger and Richard Staudinger, both of Dorrance, and Joe Staudinger of Gilbert, Ariz.; four daughters, Joann Snider and Marilyn Barton, both of Wichita, Carmen Patterson of Tucson, Ariz., and Alice Staudinger of Olathe; two sisters, Sister Veronica Staudinger, OP, and Sister Monica Staudinger, OP; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Gilbert Staudinger; one daughter, Michelle Staudinger; five brothers, Father Joseph Staudinger, OSB, Adolph Staudinger, Anton Staudinger, Henry Staudinger and Robert Staudinger; and one sister, Helen Malone. Ina May Herod June 7, 1937, in Walnut. She died Feb. 21, 1999. A resident of Larned since 1973, coming from Morrowville, he owned and operated Ed Westhoff Dirt Construction. Westhoff was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Larned and past member of Land and Improvement Contractors Association. Survivors includes seven sons, Fred E. Westhoff of Muskogee, Okla., Earl C. Westhoff and Roy D. Westhoff, both of Great Bend, Larry W. Westhoff of Wichita, Don J. Westhoff of St. John, Gary E. Westhoff of Pratt and Jerry J. Westhoff of Lincoln, Neb.; three daughters, Phyllis J. Wells of Great Bend, Jacqueline Zabokrtsky of Burlingame and Shirley A. Roth of Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers, Otis Westhoff of Lewistown, Mont., and Bernard Westhoff of Lamar, Colo.; three sisters, Barbara Westhoff of St. Paul, Louise Kennedy and Teresa Koester, both of Joplin, Mo.; 31 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. ELLINWOOD - Hildred Robl, 93, died June 11 in Las Vegas, Nev. She was born Jan. 22, 1908, north of Ellinwood, the daughter of Mike and Anna Schlochtermeier Robl. She was a 1926 graduate of Ellinwood High School and also graduated from Hutchinson Business College. A resident of Las Vegas, coming from Ellinwood, Hutchinson and Wichita, she was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Las Vegas. Survivors include one brother, Father Eugene Robl of Columbia, Mo.; and one sister, Magdalen Robl of Las Vegas. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mat Robl and Bernard Robl; and three sisters, Laura Hammeke, Elizabeth Davis and Anita Schartz. Funeral will be at a time to be annouced later by Kimple Funeral Home. Burial will be at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic cemetery near Ellinwood at a time to be announced later by the funeral home.
