George L. Roof 1920-2001
ELLINWOOD - George L. Roof, 81, died June 21 at his home in Ellinwood. He was born June 11, 1920, the son of Charles O. and Jane Lowrey Roof. He married
Dorothy Mae Scott Dec. 31, 1948 in Mt. Hope. A resident of Ellinwood, coming from Lyons, he was a retired pumper for Edmonton Oil Company and a driller for Alpine Drilling. Roof was a member of American Legion and Veterans of Foriegn Wars, both of Ellinwood. He was a U.S. Army veteran and former P.O.W. of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Eric L. Roof of Pawnee Rock; two daughters, Sarion Ann Simpson of Hutchinson, and Diana Lynn Weiser of Champaign, Ill.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Albert Roof, Floyd Roof and William Roof; and two sisters, Betty Roof and Delores Roof. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Kimple Funeral Home Chapel in Ellinwood with the Revs. Ray Willis and Julius Ellis officiating. Burial will be at Lyons cemetery in Lyons. Ina P. Bookless 1908-2001
HUTCHINSON - Ina P. Bookless, 93, died June 20 at Thorne Care Center of Wesley Towers in Hutchinson. She was born April 12, 1908, at Orient, S.D., the daughter of Clark C. and Clara Reed Park. She came to Kansas as a small girl and grew to adulthood on a farm near Nickerson. She attended and graduated from the Nickerson School. On June 15, 1929, she married
J. Orville Bookless in Pratt. To this union were born four children: two daughters, Wanda L. and husband, Donald Richards of Greensburg and Marilyn J. and husband, Delbert Gantz of Silver Spring, Md.; two sons, John C. and wife, Susan Bookless of Williamsburg, Va., and Lawrence R. and wife, Bonnie Bookless of Great Bend. She is survived by her four children and their spouses; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Ina was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Alvin Park; six infant brothers and sisters; one infant granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann Bookless; and one great-granddaughter, Rashelle Kelly. Ina spent her adult life in Central and Southwest Kansas, the wife of a United Methodist Minister. They had their first appointment in the Southwest Kansas Conference at Wilberton-Richfield Church in 1929, then to Hugoton-Maple Leaf in 1929-1930. They also had appointments in Mayfield, Clearwater, Burchfield, Bloom, Elkart, Raymond-Ebenezer, Glen Elder, Scandia, Clyde-Agenda, Wakefield-Zoar, Attica, and retired from Montezuma-Ensign in 1974. They purchased a home in Greensburg at that time to be closer to their daughter, Wanda Richards. In 1988, they moved to Wesley Towers in Hutchinson. Her husband preceded her in death Nov. 10, 1988. Ina was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a life member of the Star of Hope chapter, Order of the Eastern Star 193, both of Greensburg. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 23 at Wesley Towers Chapel in Hutchinson with the Rev. Robert Brooks officiating. Burial will be at Wildmead cemetery in Nickerson. Gary D. Wagenseller 1955-2001
ELLINWOOD - Gary D. Wagenseller, 46, died June 19 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born March 11, 1955, in Wolf Point, Mont., the son of Bub and Bonnie Whitehorse Wagenseller. He attended Liberal High School. He married
Tami Drum Aug. 11, 1976, in Liberal. She died Feb. 10, 2000. A resident of Ellinwood, he worked in the oilfields as a roughneck. Waggenseller was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Liberal. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. Survivors include three daughters, Misty Reeves of Plains, Christy Wagenseller and Nicole Wagenseller, both of Liberal; his father and stepmother, Mary Jane, of Nixa, Mo.; his mother of Ellinwood; two brothers, Mike Wagenseller of Wolf Point and Jimmy Wagenseller of Turpin, Okla.; two sisters, Susan Roberts of Baldwin City and Bonita Ward of Larned; one stepbrother, Montgomery York of Nixa; one stepsister, Sherryl Murrell of Falcon, Mo.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one stepsister, Jennifer York. Prayer service will be at 7 tonight at the church. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Henry Hildebrandt officiating. Burial will be at Liberal Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-9 tonight at the church. No memorials are suggested. Olive Elizabeth Hoskinson Kemper 1925-2001
STAFFORD - Olive Elizabeth Hoskinson Kemper, 75, died June 18 at Heritage Manor in Plano, Texas. She was born Dec. 12, 1925, in Stafford County, the daughter of Raymond and Florence Rundell Hoskinson. She married
Jim Kemper Oct. 1, 1947, in Montezuma. A resident of Plano, coming from Wichita, she was a school teacher and columnist for the Wichita Eagle. Mrs. Kemper was a member of the 99's Women's International Flying Association, volunteer for the U.S. Forest Service and National Parks, and test cook for Betty Crocker. She was a private pilot and ground school instructor. Survivors include her husband of the home; one daughter, Jan Stalder of Parker, Texas; and one grandson. She was preceded in death by one brother, Edwin Hoskinson; and one sister, Cleo Cejda. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Minnis Chapel in Stafford with the Rev. Kasey Crosby officiating. PAWNEE ROCK - Ina M. McMillan, 92, died June 20 at Integrated Health Services in Great Bend. She was born Jan. 13, 1909, in Pawnee Rock, the daughter of Rolla M. and Minnie E. Wachholz Fry. She married
Hubert N. McMillan June 22, 1946, in Larned. He died Aug. 4, 1990. A resident of Pawnee Rock, coming from Larned, she was a psychiatric aide at Larned State Hospital and a homemaker. Mrs. McMillan was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7271 in Larned. Survivors include one daughter, Betty Schneweis of Odin; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by one brother, Fred Fry. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Larned cemetery with Pete Wackerman officiating. Jack E. Schmidt, 83, of Great Bend, died June 19 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born Aug. 9, 1917, in Great Bend, the son of John and Evelyn Jordan Schmidt. He married
Betty Standish Sept. 22, 1940, in Larned. A lifelong resident of Great Bend, he was a clerk for the U.S. Post Office in Great Bend and he also worked for Standish Ford. Schmidt was a member of First Presbyterian Church, American Legion Post 180, Veterans of Foreign War 3111, Elks Lodge 1107, Masonic Blue Lodge 15, Lake Barton Golf Club, and NARFE, all of Great Bend. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Robert Schmidt of Chandler, Ariz., and Douglas Schmidt of Manitowoc, Wis.; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by one brother, William Schmidt; and one sister, Blanche Smart. Memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home Chapel in Great Bend with the Rev. Tom Robson officiating. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. GENESEO - Paul "Leonard" Burris, 82, died June 17 at Hutchinson Hospital. He was born Nov. 13, 1918, at Parsons, the son of Paul R. and Ruth Maria Jones Burris. He married
Ann Strodtmann Dec. 26, 1940, in Wellington. A resident of Geneseo for most his life, he was a production department employee for Conoco Oil Company for 39 years. Burris was a member of 55 Plus Club and Geneseo Golf Club. Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Roger Burris of McPherson, Ron Burris of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Rick Burris of Care Free, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. William 'Bill' Shuey 1957-2001
William "Bill" Shuey, 43, of Great Bend, died June 13 at Republican River near Junction City. He was born July 16, 1957, in Great Bend, the son of Roger and Mickie Fulkerson Shuey. A lifelong resident of Great Bend, he worked as a derrick hand for Pickrell Drilling in Great Bend. Shuey was a member of the Baptist church. Survivors include his parents of Great Bend; two daughters, Brandi Gruber and Amanda Shuey, both of Great Bend; four brothers, Rick Shuey of Tioga, N.D., Ron Shuey and Joe Shuey, both of Great Bend, and Roger Dee Shuey Jr. of St. Joseph, Mo.; one sister, Pamela Jean Shuey of Great Bend; and two grandchildren. Memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home Chapel in Great Bend with Peter Wackerman officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a late date at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. There will be no visitation. Glenn E. Phillips May 22, 1942, in Wichita. He died Aug. 14, 1990. A resident of Pratt, coming from Great Bend, she was a homemaker and clerk at Lischesky Department Store in Great Bend. Mrs. Phillips was a member of First Baptist Church in Pratt, Central Baptist Church, Central Kansas Medical Center Ladies Auxiliary, Ladies Golf Association, Bridge Clubs, Brownie Scout leader, Deaconess of Central Baptist Church and Sunday school teacher, all of Great Bend. Survivors include one daughter, Christy Hicks of Pratt; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank Clarke Evans, Joseph Evans, James William Evans and Charles Robert Evans; and one sister, Nancy Mary Evans. Norman D. Horn on Oct. 6, 1944. He died in 1994. A resident of Mountain View, she had worked as a sales person for Sears in Great Bend for 30 years. Mrs. Horn was past president of American Legion Auxiliary in Great Bend. Survivors include one daughter, Joan Ratliff of Mountain View; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hackney Funeral Home Chapel in Mountain View.
