OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Ruth Frances Smith, 91, died Jan. 9 in Oklahoma City. She was born March 9, 1909, in Great Bend, the daughter of Jess A. and Lily Mae Kriete Powelson. She married Horace Lee Smith in Great Bend. He died April 29, 1962. A resident of Oklahoma City since 1993, she was a homemaker. Survivors include one daughter, Carla Von Feldt of Great Bend; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Great Bend cemetery with the Rev. Don Paden officiating. Friends may call until 9 tonight and 9-10:30 a.m. Friday, both at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association, in care of the funeral home. Jan. 11, 2001

Edmund 'Lee' Earegood 1924-2001
HOISINGTON - Edmund "Lee" Earegood, 76, died Jan. 10 at Hoisington Rehabilitation Center. He was born April 8, 1924, in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. A resident of Great Bend for 20 years, coming from Larned, he was employed by Doerr Metal Company in Larned. Survivors include four sons, David Earegood of Missouri, Donald Earegood of Great Bend, Jerry Earegood of California and Charles Dean Earegood of Larned; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Christopher Earegood. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Hoisington cemetery with the Rev. Carl Willis officiating. Friends may call until 8 tonight at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Memorials are suggested to the Clara Barton Foundation, in care of the funeral home. Jan. 11, 2001

Alva G. Johnston 1914-2001
HOISINGTON - Alva G. Johnston, 86, died Jan. 9 at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington. He was born May 17, 1914, in Altamont, the son of Joseph E. and Oava Wood Johnston. He married Mildred Manley April 21, 1940, in Oswego. A resident of Hoisington since 1958, coming from Edna, he was a grinder for Kansas Brick and Tile of Hoisington. Johnston was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Hoisington. Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Maybeil Smith of Rockford, Ill.; two brothers, Dale R. Johnston and Wayne Johnston, both of Oswego; three sisters, Eunice Whetston of Chetopa, Bessie Mayo of McComb, Okla., and Wilma Collins of Shawnee, Okla.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Johnston and Eugene Johnston; and one sister, Margaret Johnston. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington with the Rev. Matthew Pool officiating. Burial will be at the Hoisington Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday, both at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home. Jan. 11, 2001

Thomas Urban, Jr. 1937-2001
HAYS - Thomas Urban, Jr., 63, died Jan. 8 at Hays Medical Center. He was born May 6, 1937, in Loretto, the son of Thomas, Sr. and Bridget Urban Urban. He graduated fromVictoria High School in 1955. A resident of Hays, he was a farmer and worked for Marlett Mobile Home Manufacturing in Great Bend. Urban was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Liebenthal. Surivors include three brothers, Alfred Urban and Art Urban, both of LaCrosse, and Gilbert Urban of Salina; and three sisters, Tillie Urban of Colorado Springs, Colo., Dorothy Schoendaller of Wichita and Jane Schumacher of Hays. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Agnes Herrman, Florence Linenberger and one infant sister. Parish vigil will be at 7 tonight, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30, both at Brock's North Hill Chapel in Hays. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Church in LaCrosse with the Rev. Reggie Urban officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael's cemetery in LaCrosse. Friends may call until 8 tonight at the chapel and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the TMP-Marian High School for Masses, in care of the funeral chapel. Jan. 10, 2001

Thelma Darnall 1916-2001
LARNED - Thelma Darnall, 84, died Jan. 9 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Aug. 28, 1916, in Caldwell County, Ky., the daughter of L. Willis and Ella Mae Hobby Goodaker. She married Shelton E. Darnall Aug. 6, 1938, in Princeton, Ky. A resident of Pawnee County since 1938, coming from Princeton, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Darnall was a member of the First Baptist Church, the F.C.E., cooking leader of Rozel Hustlers 4-H, all of Rozel, and a charter member of the Larned Saddle Club. Survivors include her husband of the home; one daughter, Brenda Van Meter of Larned; two brothers, Argyle Darnall of Princeton and Russell "Ted" Darnall of Danville, Ky.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was prececed in death by three brothers, Ruel E. Darnall, Deward C. Darnall and Jewell B. Darnall. Funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned with the Rev. John Hester officiating. Burial will be at the Larned Cemetery. Friends may call until 8 tonight and until service time Thursday at the mortuary. The family will receive friends from 6-8 tonight at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the Pawnee County 4-H Foundation, in care of the mortuary. Jan. 10, 2001

Larry A. Hastings 1956-2001
WICHITA - Larry A. Hastings, 44, died Jan. 6 at his residence in Wichita. He was born Feb. 24, 1956, in Dodge City, the son of James G. and Lora Belle Smith Hastings. He was a graduate of Hanston High School and Fort Hays State University. A resident of Wichita, he was a a procurement agent for Boeing and worked at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Hastings was a member of United Methodist Church in Hanston, lifetime member of the National Youth Sport Organization, executive board member of Greater Wichita Youth Football Association, all of Wichita. He coached for the Tiger Football Organization for 20 years. Survivors include his mother of Hanston; three brothers, Steve Hastings of Hanston, Jim Hastings of Shawnee and Arnold Hastings of Merriam; and one sister, Nancy Graves of Wichita. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Mitch Reece officiating. Burial will be at the Fairmont cemetery in Jetmore. Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Central Community Church in Wichita. Friends may call until 8 tonight at Beckwith Funeral Home in Jetmore. Memorials are suggested to the Tiger Football Memorial Fund in Wichita, or Hanston United Methodist or Hanston Boy Scouts, all in care of the funeral home. Jan. 10, 2001

George Munsch 1904-2001
SCHOENCHEN - George Munsch, 96, died Jan. 7 at St. John's of Hays Nursing Home. He was born June 18, 1904, in Rush County, the son of Jacob and Mary Bieker Munsch. He married Helen Schoendaller Nov. 11, 1925, in Rush County. She died June 1, 1940. He married Johanna Zimmerman Werth Dec. 5, 1960, in Great Bend. She died Oct. 25, 1990. A resident of Schoenchen, he was a farmer and the owner of the Silver Star Tavern. He was a painter and wall paper hanger. Munsch was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council 4166, both of Schoenchen. Survivors include five daughters, Viola Werth of Schoenchen, Bernice Dechant, Cora Schumacher, Julieta Randa, all of Hays, and Darlene Bortz of Claflin; one stepson, Marvin Werth of Hays; 34 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Marietta Beyer and LaVera Dinges; an infant son; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren. Knights of Columbus rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday followed by a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church in Schoenchen with the Rev. Mike Scully officiating. Burial will be at the St. Anthony cemetery in Schoenchen. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, both at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the St. Anthony's cemetery fund or St. John's of Hays Nursing Home, both in care of the funeral home. Jan. 9, 2001

Beulah Margaret Booth Bowsky 1917-2001
Beulah Margaret Booth Bowsky, 83, died Jan. 5 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Mo. She was born Sept. 22, 1917, in McGregor, Mich., the daughter of Robert and Mamie Kidney Booth. She married Russell "Bud" Bowsky. He died September 1999. A resident of Great Bend, coming from Sandusky, Mich., she was the owner of Distinctive Drapery. Survivors include four sons, Jim Bowsky of Colorado, Bill Bowsky of Kansas, Roger Bowsky of California and Jack Bowsky of Oregon; one daughter, Judy Cook-Bowsky of Missouri; two brothers, Loren Booth of Kansas and Larry Booth of Michigan; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, William Booth and one sister, Goldie Booth. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hackers Funeral Home in Sandusky, Mich. Burial will be at Zion cemetery in Michigan. Memorials are suggested to the Reform Church of Latter-day Saints, in care of the funeral home. Jan. 9, 2001

Bette Jo Dailey 1925-2001
Bette Jo Dailey, 75, died Jan. 8 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose Campus, in Great Bend. She was born June 19, 1925, in Great Bend, the daughter of John B. and Sadie A. Hunsley Curray. She married Don E. Dailey June 15, 1958, in Vandalia, Ill. A lifetime resident of Great Bend, she was owner, operator and bookkeeper of Standard Liquor Store. Mrs. Dailey was a member of First Christian Church, American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Eagles Auxiliary, all of Great Bend. Survivors include her husband of the home. She was preceded in death by one brother, Jack B. Curray. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. A private family burial will be at the Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church or American Legion, both in care of Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend. Jan. 9, 2001

LynDon A. 'Lyn' Gurtner 1964-2001
SALINA - LynDon A. "Lyn" Gurtner, 36, died Jan. 4 in Salina. He was born Jan. 10, 1964, in Auburn, Ind., the son of Eldon Lynn and Sally Carlson Gurtner. A resident of Salina, he was a route manger for Schwan's Frozen Food Sales and worked for Bioform Corporation in Great Bend. He farmed south of Atwood and in Cheyenne Wells, Colo. Gurtner was a member of ATA Tae Kwon Do in Colby. Survivors include his wife, Traci Gurtner of the home; one son, Tanner Gurtner of Salina; three daughters, Amanda Gurtner and Tanzia Gurtner, both of Salina, and Talitha Gurtner of Marysville, Ohio; his mother of Fremont, Ind.; two brothers, David Gurtner of Las Vegas, Nev., and Earl Gurtner of Fremont; and two sisters, Eldonna Wagonrod of Ohio City, Ohio, and Jolen Dailey of Edon, Ohio. Funeral will be at 1 today at Ryan Mortuary in Salina with the Revs. Eric Daily and Jim Lundin officiating. Burial will be at Gypsum Hill cemetery in Salina. Memorials are suggested to the Gurtner Children's Memorial, in care of the funeral home. Jan. 8, 2001

Clair O. 'John' Haltom 1925-2001
ANTHONY - Clair O. "John" Haltom, 75, died Jan. 6 in Branson, Mo. He was born Jan. 7, 1925, in Anthony, the son of Thomas and Mary Leslie Haltom. He married Gladys A. Allen Dec. 30, 1950, in Hutchinson. A resident of Anthony, he was an office manager for Oil Field Supply Company. Haltom was a member of Forsyth Community Presbyterian Church, American Legion, past master of Masonic Lodge 247 in Chase, 109 Evac Hospital Association, Order of Eastern Star Hayworth Chapter, a past Boy Scout leader, past school board member and past secretary of Western Kansas API Chapter. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Paul Haltom of Tulsa, Okla., and Tom Haltom of Pratt; one sister, Margaret Mardis of Anthony; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rosedale cemetery in Manchester, Okla., with the Rev. Kay Mills officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or Rosedale cemetery Fund, both in care of Elliott Mortuary in Anthony. Jan. 8, 2001

Robert 'Bob' M. Manning 1923-2001
ENID, Okla. - Robert "Bob" M. Manning, 77, died Jan. 6 in Enid. He was born March 12, 1923, in Ringwood, Okla., the son of Amos and Juanita Latimer Manning. He was a graduate from Ringwood High School. He married Erma Jean Collins in 1946. She preceded him in death. He married Betty LaCourse in 1990 in Enid. A resident of Enid, he worked in the oilfields. Manning was a U.S. Army veteran, serving overseas in 1942. Surviviors include his wife of the home; one son, Bob Manning of Amarillo, Texas; two daughters, Sandy Scherlacker of Manhattan and Cindy Manning of Edmond; two stepsons, James LaCourse of Tulsa, Okla., and Rod LaCourse of Oregon; one stepdaughter, Cindi Posey of San Angelo, Texas; one sister, Leta Farnsworth of Sharon, Okla.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister. Graveside services were at 11 today at the Pleasant Hill cemetery in Enid with the Rev. Ron Graber officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Hospice Circle of Love, in care of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home in Enid. Jan. 8, 2001

Leonard Younger 1920-2001
WICHITA - Leonard Younger, 80, died Jan. 4 in Wichita. He was born Aug. 25, 1920, in Victoria, the son of Martin Joseph and Ann Regina Lauber Younger. A resident of Wichita, he worked for Missouri Pacific Railroad. Younger was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars 1428 in Hoisington. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include two brothers, Jerome Joseph Younger of Emporia and Albert Younger of Hoisington; three sisters, Mary Ann Funk of Otis, Martina Luebbers of Claflin and Betty Shaver of Royce City, Texas. He was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Younger of Salina. Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Resthaven Gardens of Memory in Wichita. Funeral arrangements were handled by Resthaven Mortuary in Wichita. Jan. 8, 2001
