Betty Jean Gagelman 1927-2000
Betty Jean Gagelman, 73, died Nov. 23 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St.
Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born June 12, 1927, in Nashville, the
daughter of Adam and Della A. Subler Mauch. She married
Raymond A. Gagelman
June 29, 1947, in Great Bend. A long-time resident of Great Bend, she was a
telephone operator for South Western Bell.
Mrs. Gagelman was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend and
Telephone Pioneers.
Survivors include her husband of the home; two daughters, Starla Gagelman
and Janice R. Klepper, both of Great Bend; one brother, Hugh D. Mauch of
Great Bend; and two grandchildren.
Prayer service will be at 7 tonight at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Dr. Gary
W. Teske officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may
call from 1- 9 tonight at funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the
church or the Great Bend Humane Society, both in care of the funeral home.

Leland F. Hamby 1928-2000
ELLINWOOD - Leland F. Hamby, 72, died Nov. 23 at Kansas Heart Hospital in
Wichita. A resident of Ellinwood, coming from Aldrich, Mo., he was a
retired oil field worker.
Survivors include his wife, Nellie, of the home; four sons, James Hamby of
Aldrich, Billy Hamby of Bolivar, Mo., Ronnie Hamby of Great Bend and Terry
Hamby of Elk City; eight daughters, Linda Stevens of Bolivar, Donna Crow of
Ellinwood, Elaine Pyle and Raylene Keith, both of ElDorado Springs, Mo.,
Barbara Carstens of Ellinwood, Kathlene Cox of Appleton City, Mo., Hazelene
Doyle of Fletcher, N.C., and Dorothy Fulbright of Caney; two brothers,
Ellis Hamby of Ellinwood and Babe Hamby of Aldrich; one sister, Goldie
Manning of Ellinwood; 28 grandchildren; and 26 stepgrandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Murray Chapel in Bolivar with the Rev.
Ralph Bennam officiating. Burial will be at Lindley Prairie Cemetery, west
of Fair Play. Friends may call from 7-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Melvin 'Mel' Hemken 1925-2000
OTIS - Melvin "Mel" Hemken, 75, died Nov. 23 at Hays Medical Center. He was
born May 21, 1925, in rural Albert, the son of Herman and Anna Wagner
Hemken. He married
Dorothy Peters Oct. 9, 1983, in Otis. A lifetime
resident of Otis and Albert area, he worked for Golden Belt Telephone
Association for 31 years before retirement.
Hemken was a member of Peace Lutheran Church of Albert.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one step-son, Douglas Kaiser of
Austin, Texas; two step-daughters, Janice Higgason of Horseshoe Bay, Texas,
and Linda Kenyon of Otis; one brother, Lowell Hemken of Fort Collins,
Colo.; one sister, Lorraine Erickson of Great Bend; seven
step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Otis
with the Rev. Margaret Gary officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday
at Peace Lutheran Church cemetery in Albert. Friends may call from 1-9
tonight at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington and from 9:30 a.m. to
service time Monday at the church. Prayer service will be at 7 tonight at

LARNED - Lillian LaVerne Fink, 83, died Nov. 24 at Wichita.

Dallas M. Wagner 1922-2000
OTTAWA - Dallas M. Wagner, 78, died Nov. 21 at Olathe Medical Center in
Olathe. He was born July 2, 1922, in El Dorado, the son of J.H. and Hazel
Nutter Wagner. He was a 1940 graduate of El Dorado High School and
Westminster College in Fulton, Mo., with a degree in petroleum engineering.
A resident of Ottawa since August, coming from Great Bend, Arkansas City
and El Dorado, he worked for Wagner-Orth Drilling in the oil fields with
his father and brother-in-law at El Dorado, oil production in Arkansas
City, retiring in 1989, and Kelly's Water Well in Great Bend following his
retirement.
Wagner was a lifelong Episcopalian and a member of Phi Delta Theta
Fraternity at Westminster College in Fulton. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of
World War II, serving in the South Pacific as a member of the Sea Bee's.
Survivors include one son, Robert Mark Wagner of Manhattan; one daughter,
Ann Wagner of Wichita; and one sister, Kathryne Orth of Boerne, Texas. He
was preceded in death by two sons, John Wagner and David Wagner.
Memorial service was held Saturday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in
Manhattan. A private Inurnment service will be at Sunset cemetery in El
Dorado at a later date.

Christabelle D. Cuthrell 1928-2000
OTIS - Christabelle D. Cuthrell, 72, died Nov. 22 at her home in Otis. She
was born Oct. 15, 1928, in rural Galatia, the daughter of Herman and Tabea
Steinert Karst. She married
Lawrence Cuthrell Nov. 14, 1948, in Milberger.
A lifetime resident of Galatia and Otis, she was head cook for USD 403 for
13 years and a homemaker.
Mrs. Cuthrell was a member of United Methodist Church of Otis.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three daughters, Jean Clair of
Great Bend, Barb Lewis of Colby and Carla Jecha of Timken; her mother of
Hoisington; two brothers, Herman L. Karst of Casper, Wy. and Wayne Karst of
Oklahoma City, Okla.; one sister, Nadine Deutsch of Hoisington; and seven
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathryn Jones.
Prayer service will be at 7 tonight at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in
Hoisington. Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with the
Rev. Marilyn Christmore officiating. Burial will be at Fairview cemetery in
Galatia. Friends may call until 9 tonight at the funeral home and from 9:30

Keith Raymond Trost Sr. 1930-2000
Keith Raymond Trost, 70, died Nov. 18 in Great Bend. He was born Feb. 20,
1930, in Concordia, the son of William McKinley and Dola Alma Smith Trost.
He graduated from Concordia High School, Westmar University and Emporia
State UIniversity. A resident of Great Bend, he was a high school teacher
and director of library services at Barton County Community College from
1967-91.
Trost was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, American Library
Association and a former member of the Lions Club, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include one son, Keith Trost Jr. of Tulsa, Okla.; two daughters,
Heidi Paul of Napa, Calif., and Victoria Monnier of Wichita; former wife,
Sharon Trost of Great Bend; one brother, Donald Trost of Southerland, Iowa;
five sisters, Lola Gropp of Concordia, Ruth Muslow of Yates Center, Willo
Harris of Whitefish, Mont., Evelyn Woolston of Southerland and Cynthia
Ormston of Marshaltown, Iowa; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by two brothers, Melvin Trost and John Trost.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Jana Baxter
officiating. Burial will be at Nelson cemetery in Huscher. Friends may call
from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Memorials are
suggested to the church, American Heart Association or Barton County

Sarah Michaelis 1912-2000
RUSSELL - Sarah Michaelis, 88, died Nov. 21 at her home in Russell. She was
born March 27, 1912, in Russell County, the daughter of Fred J. and Lena
Mai Deines. She married
Huldrich J. Michaelis Nov. 1, 1931, in rural
Russell. He died Sept. 25, 1995. A lifetime resident of Russell County, she
was a homemaker.
Mrs. Michaelis was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of Russell.
Survivors include one son, Richard Michaelis of Sioux City, Iowa; two
daughters, LaJune Gustin of Galatia and Naomi Dumler of Mesa, Ariz.; one
sister, Paulina Fabrizius of WaKeeney; seven grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Bernard
Deines; three sisters, Ruphina Deines, Miriam Deines and Elizabeth Deines.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Henry Hartman
officiating. Burial will be at Russell City Cemetery. Friends may call from
9 a.m. until noon Friday at Pohlman's Mortuary in Russell and from 1 p.m.
until service time at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, in
care of the funeral home.

Scott Sherman 1940-2000
LYONS - Scott Sherman, 60, died Nov. 21 at his residence in Lyons. He was
born Aug. 6, 1940, in Lyons, the son of Harvey S. and Hazel Baldwin
Sherman. He graduated from Lyons High School in 1958. He married
Marilyn
Adams Sept. 9, 1999, in Lyons. A lifetime resident of Lyons, he was a
retired owner of Sherman's Phillips 66.
Sherman was a member of First Christian Church, Lyons Rotary Club, Lyons
Chamber of Commerce, Lyons Fire Department and Lyons Optimist Club, all of
Lyons. He received the 1997 Distinguished Service Award.
Survivors include three sons, Chance Sherman of Lyons, Kevin White and Tim
White, both of Chase; two daughters, Nicole Tillman of Wichita and Kayla
Flegler of Hays; one brother, Tom Sherman of Lyons; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Tom
Eastman officiating. Burial will be at Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Friends
may call from 1-6 p.m. Friday at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons. Memorials
are suggested to the Bell and Star Fund, Lyons Rotary Club or Scott Sherman
