Malachi Jeffrey Thornton 2000-2000
NORMAN, Okla. - Malachi Jeffrey Thornton, 5 months, died Oct. 19 in
Oklahoma City, Okla. He was born May 11 in Wichita, the son of Michael and
Miranda Risley Thornton.
Survivors include his parents; three brothers, Zachary Thornton, Andrew
Schwartz and Isaiah Martinez; one sister, Elizabeth Thornton; grandparents,
Dinah and Mike Doolin, Robert Verne Thornton, and Verlyn and Debbie Risley;
and great-grandparents, Verne Thornton, Norma Schenk and Hazel Risely.
Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Primrose Chapel in Norman.
Friends may call all day today and Monday and until noon on Tuesday at the
funeral chapel.

Verna Emma Dutton 1912-2000
BELPRE - Verna Emma Dutton, 88, died Oct. 20 at Via Christi Regional
Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. She was born Sept. 23, 1912,
at Trousdale, the daughter of Clement O. and Mary Gradall. She married Ira
Vern Dutton May 19, 1935, at Ashland. He died Feb. 21, 1995. A lifetime
resident of the Belpre community, she was a homemaker and school teacher.
Mrs. Dutton was a member of Belpre United Methodist Church, serving as
pianist and teacher, United Methodist Women, Beautiful Prairie Unit, Belpre
Homemakers Unit, past member of Macksville Order of the Eastern Star, and
Trousdale 4-H Club.
Survivors include three sons, Darrell Dutton of Manhattan, Leroy Dutton of
Canon City, Colo., and Dennis Dutton of Macksville; 11 grandchildren; and
six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Orlen
Gradall; and one sister, Loraine Martin.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Dr. E.
Carolyn Wills and Charles Grant officiating. Burial will be at Farmington
Cemetery in Macksville. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today at Minnis
Chapel in Macksville. Memorials are suggested to National Kidney
Foundation, Stafford County Emergency Medical Service or donor's choice,
all in care of the funeral chapel.

Thelma L. Ritter 1914-2000
Thelma L. Ritter, 86, died Oct. 14 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St.
Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Feb. 28, 1914, in Great Bend, the
daughter of Frank Joseph and Katie Rowe Koelch. She married Roy Eugene
Ritter Dec. 24, 1942, in Great Bend. He died May 16, 1948. A resident of
Great Bend, she was a housewife.
Survivors include two daughters, Della Harwood of Natoma and Dolly Sones of
Topeka; one sister, Delores Classon of Larned; two grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Great Bend Family Mortuary with the
Rev. Jana Baxter officiating. Burial will be at the Goldenbelt Memorial
Park in Great Bend. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m.
until service time Saturday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to
donor's choice, in care of the funeral home.

Martha Louise Smith 1909-2000
PRATT - Martha Louise Smith, 91, died Oct. 12 at Pratt Regional Medical
Center in Pratt. She was born June 12, 1909, in New Mexico. She married
Cecil B. Smith. He preceded her in death. A 10-year resident of Pratt,
coming from Wichita, she was a homemaker.
She was a member of Order Eastern Star of St. John.
Survivors include one son, Douglas C. Smith of Pratt; and one sister,
Geraldine Collins of Sante Fe, N.M. She was preceded in death by one son,
Stanton Smith; one daughter, Martha Geraldine Smith; and one grandson,
Sidney D. Smith.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Neelands cemetery in rural
Stafford County with the Rev. Jim Dieker officiating. Memorials are
suggested to the American Diabetes Association, in care of Minnis Chapel in
St. John.

Melissa G. Krom 1968-2000
Melissa G. Krom, 32, died Sept. 30 at her home in Great Bend. She was born
Sept. 15, 1968, in Anderson, S.C., the daughter of Robert Alvin and Mary
Catharine Mauldin Crowe. A 14-year resident of Great Bend, coming from
Eupora, Miss., she was a secretary for Stanion Wholesale Electric Co. in
Great Bend.
Survivors include one son, Matthew Hutchson of Great Bend; two daughters,
Heather Crowe and Taylor Krom, both of Great Bend; her mother, Mary Simpson
of Eupora; her step-father, Dewey Simpson Sr. of Eupora; one brother, Dewey
Simpson Jr. of Eupora; one sister, Deborah Borden of Eupora; and her
companion, Dennis Wagner of Great Bend.
Funeral was Oct. 4 in Eupora. Burial was at Mount Zion cemetery in Eupora.
Great Bend Family Mortuary and Crematory was in charge of local
arrangements.

John A. Alsup 1921-2000
ELLINWOOD - John A. Alsup, 78, died Oct. 16 at the Veterans Administration
Hospital in Wichita. He was born Dec. 21, 1921, in South Fork, Mo., the son
of Barten T. Alsup and Nettie Marie Dover. A resident of Ellinwood since
1969, coming fom Neodesha, he was a truck driver for Kaw Transport.
Alsup was a member of the Teamsters union. He was a U.S. Army veteran of
World War II.
Survivors include two sons, Jeff Alsup of Great Bend and Mike Alsup of
Ellinwood; two daughters, Susan Anderson and Barbara Carter, both of
Wichita; one brother, Bud Alsup of Springfield, Mo.; five sisters, Faye
Baker, Lena Hammock, and Georgia Abney, all of West Plains, Mo., May
Shelton of Green Forest, Ark., Ellen Davis of Colonial Heights, Va.; six
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one
brother, Frank Alsup; and one sister, Vina Kincheloe.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Lakin-Comanche cemetery in
Ellinwood with the Revs. Doyle Smith and Ray Shelton officiating. Military
graveside services will be conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may
call from 1-8 p.m. Sunday and from 9-10 a.m. Monday at Great Bend Family
Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care
of the funeral home.

Hulda Herbel 1914-2000
WILSON - Hulda Herbel, 85, died Oct. 18 at Wilson Nursing Center in Wilson.
She was born Nov. 24, 1914, in Tampa, the daughter of Anna Hefley and Henry
Dick. She married Henry Herbel in 1934 in Russell. He preceded her in
death. A lifetime resident of the Wilson/Dorrance area, she was a homemaker
and restaurant operator.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wilson.
Survivors include two sons, Delwin Herbel of Salina and Kenneth D. Herbel
of Omaha, Neb.; two daughters, Charlett A. Bruce of Wilson and Shirley Holt
of Salina; one sister, Leona Keys of Russell; nine grandchildren; and 17
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers; and seven
sisters.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wilson with
the Rev. James Wagner officiating. Burial will be at the Wilson City
Cemetery. Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Foster Mortuary
in Wilson. Family prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

Mary Lee Brunner 1930-2000
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Our dear mother and grandmother died and went to be
with the Lord on Oct. 14. She spent her life lovingly watching over and
caring for her family and beloved pets. Grandma was so very much loved and
her absence leaves such a hole in our hearts. I know she is watching over
us always from Heaven.
She was born Jan. 21, 1930, in Salina to Daniel P. Sullivan of Michigan and
Blanche A. Mog Sullivan of Kansas. She was married to Loren D. Smith in May
1951 and they raised three children in Lakewood, Calif. He preceded in her
in death in March 1975. She enjoyed a long career with the Bank of America
and was very involved in her church and the Eastern Star. She married
Robert Brunner and she was again widowed in 1990. She then moved to
Bakersfield, Calif., where she lived for 10 years. Her great passion in
life, besides her grandchildren, were her "puppies" and all of the homeless
animals of the world, who she helped through the SPCA.
She is survived by her daughter, Dayla Clark and husband Steve, her son Jim
Smith and wife Katie, and her daughter Linda Richey and husband Mike. She
will never be forgotten by the grandchildren she dearly loved - Katie and
Dayla Richey, Nalanea and Brandon Clark and Becky Smith. Left behind also
were her stepdaughters, Jody Fowler and Arasie Maratas and their families,
her sister Beverly Bobbit, and her brother, J.R. Sullivan, and his wife
Evelyn.
Services will be Friday, Oct. 20, at 3 p.m. at Valley Baptist Church, 4800
Fruitvale Ave., Bakersfield. Pastor Pradis will lead this memorial of our
much loved mother. Mary requested donations to the SPCA to care for the
helpless animals (instead of flowers) if desired.

Ricardo Morales 1970-2000
Ricardo Morales, 30, died Oct. 16 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St.
Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 18, 1970, at Colonia
Chapultepec in Mexico, the son of Eluterio and Manuelete Ugalde Morales. He
married Irasema Guerra in San Francisco, Calif. A resident of Great Bend,
he worked for Acme Iron & Metal in Great Bend.
Morales attended St. Rose Catholic Church in Great Bend.
Survivors include his wife of the home; his mother of Zacatecas, Mexico;
two sons, Kevin Morales and Geovanni Morales, both of Great Bend; two
brothers, Simon Morales of Great Bend and Manuel Morales of Zacatecas; and
two sisters, Amelia Morales of Great Bend and Anna Morales-Juan Aldame of
Zacatecas.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Bryant Christians Chapel in Great
Bend with the Rev. Angel Dy officiating. Burial will be at a later date at
Panteon Colonia Chapitepec in Zacatecas, Mexico.

Dorothy A. Ringering 1910-2000
ST. JOHN - Dorothy A. Ringering, 90, died Oct. 15 at her home. Friends may
call from 1-8 p.m. today and not on Tuesday. The Tribune regrets the error.
