Martha T. Lamatsch 1911-2000
ODIN - Martha T. Lamatsch, 89, died Oct. 23 at the Hoisington Rehabilitation
Center in Hoisington. She was born June 10, 1911, in Barton County, the
daughter of Charles and Theresia Werner Schich. She married
William ?Bill?
J. Lamatsch Oct. 21, 1936. He died March 17, 1988. A lifetime resident of
Claflin and Odin, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Lamatsch was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and St. Ann?s
Altar Society in Odin.
Survivors include one sister, Helen Urban of Hutchinson.
Vigil service will be 7 tonight, followed by St. Ann?s Altar Society Rosary,
both at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Funeral will be 10:30
a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Pascal Klein officiating. Burial
will be at Holy Family Church cemetery in Odin. Friends may call until 9
tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Holy Family
Cemetery Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Gene M. Webb 1923-2000
LYONS - Gene M. Webb, 77, died Oct. 20 at Hutchinson Hospital. He was born
July 3, 1923, at Garden City, the son of Ernest and Olive Douglas Webb. He
married Fern Borgman June 27, 1948, at Garden City. A Lyons resident for 38
years, he was the former plant operator for Northern Gas Products.
Webb was a member of Faith Bible Church in Lyons. He was a U. S. Navy
veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Aaron Webb of Overland
Park; three daughters, Miriam Pankratz of Newton, Marilyn Previtera of Lyons
and Gloria Pierson of Aurora, Neb.; one brother, Darrel Webb of Wichita; one
sister, Betty Ferrel of Great Bend; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by three brothers, Elmer Webb, Kenneth Webb and Vernon Webb.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons. Burial will
be at Lyons Municipal cemetery with military rites conducted by a funeral
detail from Fort Riley. Memorials are suggested to the Faith Bible Church
Building Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Joyce R. Klein 1938-2000
ROZEL - Joyce R. Klein, 62, died Oct. 21 at Wesley Medical Center in
Wichita. She was born March 7, 1939, at Smith Center, the daughter of George
and Martha Schoeni Kessler. She was a graduate of Kensington High School and
Fort Hays State University with honors. She married
Allen Klein Jan. 26,
1958, at Kensington. A longtime resident of Rozel, she was a homemaker and
was involved in farming with her husband.
Mrs. Klein was a member of Rozel United Methodist Church, United Methodist
Women, church board member, Rozel FCE and 4-H photography leader, all of
Rozel; Pawnee County for Upper Ark Valley board member, lay speaker and lay
member in the UMC West Conference. For several years she was the Rozel news
correspondent for the Larned Tiller and Toiler.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Tim Klein of Hoxie,
Randy Klein of Claflin and Jol Klein of Wamego; one daughter, Marta Klein of
Salina; one sister, Ronda Sweat of Syracuse, Neb; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Rob
Schmutz officiating. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8
p.m. Tuesday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned. Burial will be at Browns
Grove cemetery in Burdett. Memorials are suggested to the church or the
Burdett EMS, in care of the funeral home.

Mary C. Rolo 1900-2000
LARNED - Mary C. Rolo, 100, died Oct. 20 at the Friendship Manor in Pratt.
She was born March 7, 1900, in Leeton, Mo., the daughter of H. Benton and
Ora Louise Epperson Bowman. She married
Francis A. Rolo May 25, 1923, in
Larned. He died July 29, 1976. A Pratt resident since 1993, she was a
homemaker.
Mrs. Rolo was a member of United Methodist Church in Larned.
Survivors include five sons, Allan Rolo of Palco, Keith Rolo of Larned,
Arthur Rolo of Plainville, Barry Rolo of Knox City, Texas, and Larry Rolo of
Lawn, Texas; one daughter, Louise Meyer of Belpre; one brother, Clyde Bowman
of Larned; 30 grandchildren; 73 great-grandchildren and 22
great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sons, Kenneth
Rolo, Wilbur Rolo and Bryce Rolo; one infant daughter, Mary Ann Rolo; and
four brothers, Eugene Bowman, Hugh Bowman, Robert Bowman and Carl Bowman.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned
with the Rev. Dean Brown officiating. Friends may call until 8 tonight and
until service time Tuesday at the mortuary. Burial will be at Pleasant
Valley cemetery in Zook. Memorials are suggested to the Leukemia Society of

LaVeda C. Ukens 1921-2000
HUTCHINSON - LaVeda Ukens,78, died Oct. 21 at Hutchinson Hospital. She was
born Nov. 24, 1921, in Sylvia, the daughter of Carl E. and Edith N.
Ankerholz Gill. She was a 1939 graduate of Sylvia High School and a graduate
of Salt City Business College. She married
Edwin W. Ukens Feb. 14, 1954, at
Sylvia. He died Aug. 22, 1989. A resident of Hutchinson, she was a secretary
for Barton Salt.
Mrs. Ukens was a member of Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church, United
Methodist Women and Keystone Class, all in Hutchinson.
Survivors include two sons, Walden ?Wally? L. Ukens and Rick L. Ukens, both
of Hutchinson; one daughter, Jolene K. Miller of Hutchinson; stepson, Duane
L. Ukens of Windom; two brothers, Lex Gill of Sterling and Dwain Gill of
Sylvia; one sister, Lila Reynolds; three grandchildren; five
stepgrandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Elliot Mortuary Chapel with the
Rev. Alan D. Stambaugh officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery
in Hutchinson. Friends may call 6-9 tonight, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at

Vernie William "Bud" Cates 1917-2000
Vernie William "Bud" Cates, 83, of Great Bend died Oct. 22 at Great Bend. He
was born Jan. 30, 1917, at Brookville, the son of Orion Orson and Hattie
Eunice Beebe Cates. He married
Aldeen Mae Morgret April 27, 1937, at
Wichita. She died Dec. 19, 1998. A resident of Great Bend since 1941, coming
from Newton and Emporia, he was a registered chemical engineer for Dowell
Oil, a division of Dow chemical, and a mentor to college-graduate engineers.
Cates was a member of King Memorial United Methodist Church, American
Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and AARP. He was a U.S. Army veteran of
World War II, serving as a private first class truck driver with the 56th
Replacement Battalion. He received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
Survivors include one son, Dale Orson Cates of Great Bend; three daughters,
Janice Marie Smith and Judith Irene Bullard, both of Great Bend, and Sharon
Jeanne Camphausen of St. Peters, Mo.; two brothers, Jack Cates and Lee
Cates, both of Emporia; two sisters, Helen Humbarger of Kansas City and
Marie Overall of Emporia; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by two brothers, Delbert Cates and Frank Cates; and
one sister, Anna Mae Cates.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Fryberger Mortuary Chapel with the Rev.
Diana Fox officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may
call until 9 tonight, and 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the mortuary.
Family will receive friends from 6-8 tonight at the mortuary. Memorial are

Lee Miller 1909-2000
PRATT - Lee Miller, 91, died Oct. 22 at his home in Pratt. He was born June
1, 1909, in Pratt, the son of Oren Lee and Alice Hillard Miller. He married
Mable Kilgore June 15, 1929, in Pratt. She died Sept. 3, 1976. He married
Bertha Wagner Wetzel June 5, 1977, in Wichita. A lifetime Pratt resident, he
was a retired farmer and substitute rural mail carrier.
Miller was a member of Church of Christ, Eagles and Lions Club, all of
Pratt.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Helen Weese of Great
Bend and Carolyn Woods of Alva Okla.; one brother, Bill Miller of Pratt;
three sisters, Mildred Hogg of Wichita, Jessie Miracle of Pratt and Pauline
King of Topeka; 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and six
great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald Lee
Miller and Darrel Lee Miller; two brothers, Bob Miller and Orville Miller;
and one sister, Mattie Wilcox.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. H.C.
Pennel officiating. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8
p.m. Tuesday at Larrison Mortuary in Pratt. Memorials are suggested to the
church or South Wind Hospice, in care of the funeral home.

Palma Lohrey 1903-2000
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Palma Lohrey, 97, died Oct. 19 at Penrose
Hospital in Colorado Springs. She was born Feb. 26, 1903, in Timken, the
daughter of Jacob and Susanne Mohr Hanhardt. She married
Henry F. Lohrey
May 2, 1923, at Larned. He died Aug. 1, 1990, at Colorado Springs. A
resident of Colorado Springs, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Lohrey was a member of Central Seventh Day Adventist Church in
Colorado Springs.
Survivors include one son, Wilbur Lohrey of Colorado Springs; one daughter,
Donna M. Kingma of Henderson, Nev.; one grandchild; and one
great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John Hanhardt
and Ruben Hanhardt; and one sister, Rachel Kaiser.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse
with Ed Jumper officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse City Cemetery.
Friends may call from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are

Michael 'Mike' Walter Hughes 1947-2000
AUGUSTA - Michael "Mike" Walter Hughes, 53, died Oct. 19. A resident of
Augusta, he was a contractor and welder.
Survivors include one son, Chris Hughes of Great Bend; his mother, Nadine
Arnold Hughes of Augusta; two sisters, Joyce Metcalf of Towanda and Janet
McWilliams of Emporia; and one grandchild.
A memorial service will be at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the
American Cancer Society, in care of Dunsford Funeral Home in Augusta.
