Rosalie Jean Pennington 1934-2000
Rosalie Jean Pennington, 65, died Sept. 7 in Great Bend. She was born Sept.
21, 1934, at Coffeyville, the daughter of Orville Andrew and Bertha Mildred
George Thomas. She was a 1952 graduate of Field Kindley Memorial High School
in Coffeyville, a 1954 graduate of Coffeyville Community College with an
associate?s degree, a graduate of Friends University in Wichita with a
bachelor?s degree and a 1995 graduate of Fort Hays State University with a
master?s degree. She married
Garey Franklin Pennington Nov. 25, 1976, at
Coffeyville. A resident of Great Bend since 1976 coming from Coffeyville,
she was an assistant to the president of Barton County Community College for
22 years, an administrator at Coffeyville Community Junior College for 24
years and was employed by Primus Sterilizer for three years.
Mrs. Pennington was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Barton
County Community College Board of Trustees, Pilot Club International of
Great Bend, Golden Belt Country Club, CCC Cancer Support Group and Beta
Signa Psi sorority. She was the founding president of the Association of
Kansas Community College Office Professionals. She was the 1994 recipient of
the Laura M. Cross Kansas Association of Collegiate Registrars and
Admissions Officers Distinguished Award from Wichita State University.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Randy Watson of McPherson; one
daughter, Vikki Watson of Gardner; one stepson, Patrick Pennington of
Phoenix, Ariz.; three stepdaughters, Julie Frank, Colleen Ulinger and Lisa
Askey, all of Phoenix; her mother, Bertha Bohannon of Coffeyville; two
brothers, Harold Thomas of Coffeyville and Larry Thomas of Carl Junction,
Mo.; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church with the Rev. Kevin
Baxter officiating. Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9-11 a.m.
Monday, all at Fryberger Mortuary in Great Bend and from 1 p.m. until
service time Monday at the church. The family will receive friends from 4-6
tonight at the mortuary. Additional funeral service will be at 10 a.m.
Wednesday at Ford Wulf-Bruns Funeral Service, Edgewood Chapel, in
Coffeyville with the Rev. Dallas Beall officiating. Burial will be at
Restlawn cemetery in Coffeyville. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Tuesday at the chapel. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m.

William David Britton 1908-2000
LEWIS - William David Britton, 92, died Sept. 8 at Pratt Regional Medical
Center in Pratt. He was born July 20, 1908, at Belpre, the son of Andrew J.
and Elizabeth Gibson Britton. He married
Alsea Fletcher on Dec. 29, 1935,
and was divorced Sept. 29, 1998. A lifetime resident of the Lewis area, he
was a retired farmer.
Britton was a member of the United Methodist Church of Lewis, former USD
#502 board member, former ASCS board member, former Lewis Co-Op board member
and a 50-year member of Lewis Masonic Lodge 220.
Survivors include two sons, Gale Britton and William Britton, both of Lewis;
one daughter, Barbara Hyde of Fort Smith, Ark; 10 grandchildren, and 10
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, four
brothers, and one sister.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at McKillip Memorial Chapel in Kinsley
with the Rev. Mark Hornbaker officiating. Burial will at Wayne cemetery in
Lewis. Friends may call until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to service time
Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to donor?s choice or to
the lodge, both in care of the funeral home.
John Loren Selle 1920-2000
GREAT BEND - John Loren Selle, 80, died Sept. 8 at his home in Great Bend.
He was born April 27, 1920, in rural Great Bend, the son of Egon and Fern
Ann Chamberlain Selle. He married
Lethea Haller Nov. 16, 1945, at Wichita. A
lifetime resident of Great Bend, he was a farmer.
Selle was a member of the Church of Christ and had served on the school
board of USD 107. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Richard Selle of Pueblo West, Colo.;
one daughter, Patricia Amerine of Great Bend; four grandchildren, and 4
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel
Christiansen.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the church with the Revs. Peter
Wackerman, Vern Haller and Fred Kirkpatrick officiating. Burial will be at
the Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may visit from 1-9 tonight and 9-11:30 a.m.
Monday at Bryant-Christian Funeral Home and from noon to service time Monday
at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church in care of the funeral
home.
Kathryn 'Kay' Loy Calvin 1910-2000
BRIGHTON, Mich. >Kathryn 'Kay' Loy Calvin, 89, died Aug. 29 at Ashley Court
in Brighton, Mich. She was born Nov. 6, 1910, in Glasco, the daughter of
Frank J. and Clara Butler Colwell. She attended St. Mary College and earned
an AB degree from the University of Kansas in 1932 and a master?s degree
from the College of William and Mary. She married
David T. Loy, M.D. He died
in 1960. She married
Clifton C. Calvin. He died in 1993. A resident of
Brighton coming from Kansas, she was employed in 1933 as a social worker
with the Federal Emergency Relief Agency and later with Central Trades
Council. She was an instructor in the sociology department at the University
of Kansas in 1960.
Mrs. Calvin was a member of Phi Beta Kappa honor fraternity, served on the
board of directors of the Kansas state Historical Society, was a member of
the Native Sons and Daughters, served as Lawrence Housing commissioner,
helped establish a Catholic Social Services and served as member of its
board, and was a member of PEO since 1936. In 1971, she was cited by the
governor of Kansas as a distinguished Kansan.
Survivors include two grandsons, David K. Loy of Minneapolis, Minn., and J.
Michael Loy of Brighton; three great-grandchildren, Janell Loy-Alberta,
Abigail Loy and Taylor Loy; and one great-great-granddaughter, Alexis Loy,
all of Brighton. She was preceded in death by one son, David C. Loy, of
Oshkosh, Wisc., and one brother, George F. Colwell of Glasco.
Memorial service for Mrs. Calvin and her son will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 21 at
Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend. Interment will be at Great
Bend Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Douglas County Historical
Society or donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home.
Victor A. Courange 1931-2000
ENID, Okla. - Victor A. Courange, 69, died Sept. 1 at Integris Bass Baptist
Hospital in Enid, Okla. He was born May 21, 1931, at Beaver, the son of Joe
and Mary Courange. He attended school in Hoisington. He married
Leoma Bethel
Oct. 19, 1995, at Wellington. A resident of Enid, Okla., he was an oil field
supervisor.
Courange was a member of Moose Lodge. He attended St. Gregory the Great
Catholic Church in Enid. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Mark Courange of Redding, Calif.,
Rick Courange of Bakersfield, Calif., and Tom Courange of California; two
daughters, Vicki Courange of McCook, Neb., and Shelly Jacobs of Indianola,
Neb.; one stepson, Ron Thomas of Midwest City, Okla.; five brothers,
Clarence Courange of Noble, Okla., Irvan Courange of Oberlin, Eugene
Courange of Pratt, Joseph Courange of Canadian, Texas, and Jim Courange of
Wichita; eight sisters, Irene Greene of Woodward, Okla., Mary Ann Ash of
Canadian, Texas, twin sister Victoria Hubbard of Vernal, Utah, Joann Torres,
Helen Klein, Virginia Munoz, and Norma Seyfert, all of Hoisington, and
Theresa Hall of Kansas City; and 16 grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by one brother, Paul Courange; and one sister, Marjorie Cooper.
Funeral Mass was Sept. 5 at the church. Burial was at Mount Olivet Cemetery
at Paul?s Valley, Okla. Memorials are suggested to the Oklahoma Medical
Research Foundation, Cancer Division, in care of Anderson-Burris Funeral
Home in Enid.
Eula Viola Evans 1903-2000
LARNED - Eula Viola Evans, 97, died Sept. 6 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Joseph Campus in Larned. She was born June 2, 1903, in Pawnee
County, the daughter of Charles A. and Estella L. Metz Miller. She married
Fred Samuel Evans Oct. 15, 1924, at Larned. He died Oct. 27, 1993. A
lifetime resident of Larned, she was a retired occupational music therapist
at Larned State Hospital.
She was a member of United Methodist Church, past president of Veterans of
Foreign Wars Auxiliary and 4-H, all of Larned. She was also a member of
Fairfield Grange and Ash Valley Grange.
Survivors include one son, Joe Evans of Minneapolis, Minn.; one daughter,
Phyllis Basom of Salina; one brother, Glenn Miller of Larned; seven
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by three
brothers, Arlus Miller, Cleadus Miller and Warren Miller; and one
granddaughter.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in
Larned with the Rev. Charles Grant officiating. Friends may call until 8
tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday, all at the Mortuary.
Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to donor's
choice, in care of the mortuary.
Marcia Kay Koelsch 1946-2000
ST. JOHN - Marcia Kay Koelsch, 54, died Sept. 6 at Hutchinson Hospital.
She was born March 21, 1946, at Sterling, the daughter of Marion Kester and
Juanita Welch. She was a 1964 graduate of St. John High School and attended
Hutchinson Junior College. She married
Bill Edward Koelsch March 23, 1972,
at St. John. A lifetime resident of St. John, she was a homemaker and
support worker at Larned Juvenile Correctional Facility.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Billy Kester Koelsch of St. John;
two daughters, Denise Kay Cotter of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Michelle Lyn
Koelsch of St. John; one brother, Larry Welch of Lawrence; one sister, Jana
Williamson of Casper, Wyo.; and two grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Minnis Chapel in St. John with the
Revs. Ladd Welch and Lanny Welch officiating. Burial will be at Fairview
Park cemetery in St. John. Friends may call until 8 tonight at the chapel.
Memorials are suggested to St. John Recreation Commission or Children's
Fund, in care of the chapel.
Kayla Sue Plume 1940-2000
HEREFORD, Ariz. - Kayla Sue Plume, 59, died Sept. 4 at Life Care Center in
Sierra Vista, Ariz. She was born Nov. 23, 1940, at Goodland, the daughter
of Alfred and Fontella Perry Stover. She was a graduate of Fort Hays State
University with a master's degree in psychology. She married
Frank Plume
Sept. 7, 1982. She was a resident of Arizona since August of 1999, coming
from Hays.
Survivors include her husband; two sons Russell James Hawk of Montrose,
Colo., Randall John Hawk of Great Bend; one sister, Patricia Criss Eugene
of Colby; and six grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Jensen's Sierra Vista Mortuary in
