Joyce E. Wirtz 1927-2000
ELLINWOOD - Joyce E. Wirtz, 73, died Sept. 16 at her home in rural
Ellinwood. She was born Feb. 14, 1927, at Hominy, Okla., the daughter of
Roy L. and Alice Simmons Mefford. A longtime resident of rural Ellinwood,
she married Joe Wirtz Nov. 7, 1946, at Ellinwood. She was a homemaker and
retired bookkeeper for Ellinwood District Hospital.
Mr.s Wirtz was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, altar society and
hospital auxiliary, all of Ellinwood.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Jon Wirtz of
Wichita, Jeff Wirtz of Buhler and Jerry Wirtz of Ellinwood; five daughters,
Judy Berger of Halstead, Jayne Wirtz of Ellinwood, Joleen Wirtz of Wichita,
Juanita Landry of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Jeanette Trinka of Hoisington;
her father, Roy Mefford of Great Bend; one brother, Joe Mefford of Hot
Springs, Ark,; 12 grandchildren; and three great granchildren. She was
preceded in death by one son, Jim Wirtz.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. David
Flagor officiating. Altar Society rosary will be at 3 p.m. and parish wake
at 7:30 p.m., both Monday at Kimple Funeral Home. Burial will at in
Lakin-Commanche District Cemetery. Friends may call 6-9 p.m. today and 9
a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St.
Joseph School endowment fund,Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice or
Ministerial Alliance Poor Fund.
Sept. 17, 2000

Calvin Taylor 1929-2000
STAFFORD - Calvin Taylor, 70, died Sept. 14 at Corpus Christi, Texas. He
was born Dec. 15, 1929, in Stafford County, the son of Fred and Clara Mae
Thomas Taylor. He was a graduate of Wichita State University. A resident of
Texas since 1956, he was a school teacher in McPherson County and was
employed as a publisher's representative.
Taylor was a member and organist at First United Methodist Church in
Mathis, Texas.
Survivors include one sister, Lyda Chance Crawford of Corpus Christi.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Stafford cemetery with the
Rev. Kasey Crosby officiating. Minnis Chapel of Stafford is in charge of
arrangements.

Irene Marie Steckel 1910-2000
RUSSELL - Irene Marie Steckel, 89, died Sept. 13 at Hays Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 5, 1910, north of Dorrance, the daughter of John P. and
Ida Virginia Garrett Thielen. She married Clarence "C.J." Steckel June 4,
1935, at Dorrance. He died Oct. 25, 1991. A resident of Russell since 1946,
she was a homemaker and aided in the family businesses.
Mrs. Steckel was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Russell Council
of Catholic Women.
Survivors include one son, Rodney "Rod" Steckel of Russell; one brother,
George Thielen of Dorrance; one sister, Vivian Anschutz of Dorrance; three
grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one
stepgreat-grandchild.
Vigil service will be at 7 tonight, followed by a Catholic Women rosary,
both at the church. Funeral will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the church with
the Rev. Charles Steier officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 8 a.m. until service time
Saturday, all at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church or St.
Mary's cemetery Fund, both in care of the funeral home.

Melba Jean Pedigo 1924-2000
Melba Jean Pedigo, 75, died Sept. 11 at Via Christi Regional Medical
Center, St. Francis Campus, in Wichita. She was born Oct. 28, 1924, at
Madison, the daughter of Byron C. and Pattie Thelma Garriott Warrenburg.
She married Howard Stenson Pedigo March 29, 1943 at Great Bend. He died
Nov. 16, 1981. A resident of Great Bend for 19 years, coming from Madison,
she worked in food services for USD 428.
Mrs. Pedigo was a member of First United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge and
Eagles Ladies Auxiliary, all of Great Bend.
Survivors include one son, Donald L. Pedigo, of Great Bend; two daughters,
Sandra S. Smith and Kandis Ann Pedigo, both of Great Bend; one sister,
Audrey G. Morphis of Wichita; four grandchildren; two great- grandchildren;
two step-grandchildren; and one step-great- grandchild.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bryant-Christians Chapel in Great
Bend with the Rev. Jana Baxter officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend
Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service
time Thursday. Memorials are suggested to Rosewood Services, in care of
Bryant-Christians Funeral Home.

Raymond B. Funk 1923-2000
RUSSELL - Raymond B. Funk, 77, died Sept. 12 at Via Christi Regional
Medical Center, St. Francis Campus in Wichita. He was born Feb. 11, 1923,
in Barton County, the son of William and Lydia Litzenberger Funk. He
married Lillian Boxberger Nov. 22, 1942, at Milberger. A lifetime resident
of Barton County, he was a farmer and dirt contractor.
Funk was a member of the United Emanuel Lutheran Church at Milberger.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Clark Funk of Galatia; two daughters,
Victoria Sturgeon of Meriden, and Connie Funk of Great Bend; one brother,
Leonard Funk of Otis; one sister, Clara Baker of Portland, Ore.; six
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by
three brothers, Rudy Funk, Elmer Funk and Paul Funk.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Keith
Kreitzer officiating. Burial will be at Fairview cemetery in Galatia. A
prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home
in Hoisington. Friends may call from 1-9 tonight, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Thursday, both at the funeral home, and from 9:30 a.m. until service time
Friday at the church. Memorials are suggested to United Emanuel Lutheran
Church in care of the funeral home.

Joseph Francis 'Joe' Clawson 1920-2000
Joe Clawson, 80, was preceded in death by one sister, Carolyn Fairchild. He
died Sept. 10 at Integrated Health Services in Great Bend.

Virginia M. Hickerson 1922-2000
Virginia M. Hickerson, 78, died Sept. 10 at Integrated Health Services of
Great Bend. She was born Jan. 25, 1922, at Newton, the daughter of Earl and
Mabel Hall Leedy. She married Albert Hickerson Feb. 28, 1943, at Wichita. A
resident of Great Bend for 1 1/2 years, coming from Weslaco, Texas, and
Dodge City, she was a homemaker.
Mrs. Hickerson was a member of Community Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Galen Hickerson of
Tunas, Mo.; two daughters, Gwenna Harms of Great Bend and Gina German of
Mayfield; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother,
Harold Leedy.
Funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bryant-Christians Chapel in Great
Bend with the Revs. Wilbur Johnson and Leon Weece officiating. Burial will
be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. Friends may call until 9
tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday, all at
Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to
Faith of Life Ministries, in care of the funeral home.

Theodora Christina Faris 1924-2000
Theodora Christina Faris, 76, died Sept. 9 at Wichita. She was born Jan.
23, 1924, at Plattesville, Wis., the daughter of Fred and Lydia Hurd Stuer.
She married Robert O. Faris.
Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Robert O. Faris Jr. of
Valley Center; one daughter, Sandra Christine Faris of Denver, Colo.; and
one brother, John Stuer of Dubuque, Iowa.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Congregational
United Church of Christ in Great Bend with the Rev. Diana Coberly
officiating. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Cochran Mortuary in
Wichita.

Joseph Francis 'Joe' Clawson 1920-2000
Joseph Francis "Joe" Clawson, 80, died Sept. 10 at Integrated Health
Services in Great Bend. He was born June 27, 1920, at Dighton, the son of
Arnold and Hazel Ross Clawson. He married Katherine Koelsch Heckens Jan. 5,
1947, at Emporia. She died Sept. 23, 1982. A resident of Great Bend since
1947, coming from Larned, he was a mechanic for the city of Great Bend.
Survivors include one son, Curtis L. Clawson of Great Bend; one daughter,
Joyce A. Stout of Great Bend; three stepdaughters, Marie Kern, Mae Brown
and Helen Sanders, all of Great Bend; two brothers, A.B. Clawson of Pawnee
Rock and Virgil Clawson of Larned; two sisters, Maxine Yeager and Ruth
Dick, both of Larned; two grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; one
great-grandson; and 12 stepgreat-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hillcrest Memorial Park
in Great Bend with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Friends may
call from 6-9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday, all at
Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to
American Cancer Society or American Heart Fund, both in care of the funeral
home.

Katharine W. Petty 1915-2000
EMPORIA-Katherine W. Petty, 84, died Sept. 9 at Salem Village Nursing Home,
Joliet, Ill. She was born Dec. 10, 1915, at Emporia, the daughter of Wyatt
B. and Gertrude Parkman Marbourg. She married Lindell Petty Feb. 26, 1939.
He died in 1989. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Petty was a member of First Presbyterian Church at Emporia.
Survivors include two sons, Mike Petty of Lockport, Ill., and Steve Petty
of Great Bend; two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother,
Wyatt Marbourg.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church at Emporia
with Dr. J. Gordon Bechtel officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Lawn
Cemetery at Emporia. Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday
at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association in
care of Roberts-Blue Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia.

Melba J. Pedigo, 75, died Sept. 11 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center
in Wichita. Survivors and funeral arrangements will be announced by

Virginia M. Hickerson, 78, died Sept. 10 at Integrated Health Services in
Great Bend. She was born Jan. 25, 1922. Survivors and funeral arrangements

Joe Clawson, 80, died Sept. 10 at Integrated Health Services in Great Bend.
He was born June 27, 1920. Survivors and funeral arrangements will be
