William A. Caughey 1938-2000
William A. Caughey, 61, died July 1 in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 14,
1938, the son of M. Reed and Opal Casper Caughey.He was a graduate of
Russell High School and attended Wichita State University. A longtime
resident of Great Bend, coming from Russell, he was employed by the post
office for seven years.
Caughey was of the Baptist faith.Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Great Bend cemetery with
the Rev. Mark Pennington officiating. Fryberger Mortuary in Great Bend is
in charge of arrangements.
Leon Dale Strecker 1931-2000
DODGE CITY - Leon Dale Strecker, 69, died June 30 at his home in Dodge
City. He was born June 5, 1931, in rural Bazine, the son of Jake and Martha
Voos Strecker. He married
Louise Faye Zahn June 18, 1954, in San Diego,
Calif. A resident of Dodge City since 1982, coming from WaKeeney, he worked
most of his life as a driller and tool pusher in the oil-field industry. He was also employed as a car salesman, independant businessman and for the past 10 years worked for Heartland Rental Company of Dodge City.
Strecker was of the Christian faith. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving
from 1951-1954 on the U.S.S. Curtiss.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Donald W. Strecker of
WaKeeney and Bernard D. Strecker of Dodge City; one brother, Larry Strecker
of Palm Coast, Fla.; three sisters, Dorthy Hanes of Topeka, Donna Schneider
of Russell and Janice Nichols of Gladstone, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and
three great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of God in WaKeeney with
the Rev. Exie Barber officiating. Burial will be at the WaKeeney City
Cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the
church. Memorials are suggested to help assist his wife with travel
expenses for her cancer treatment in Houston, in care of Morell Funeral
Home in Larned.
Darald D. Jacobs 1940-2000
LA CROSSE - Darald D. Jacobs, 60, died July 1 at Kiowa County Memorial
Hospital in Greensburg. He was born Jan. 30, 1940, at La Crosse, the son of
Adam Jr. and Augustina Wassinger Jacobs. A lifetime resident of Rush
County, he was a farm laborer.
Jacobs was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in La Crosse.
Survivors include three brothers, Tony Jacobs of St. Louis, Mo., Wilfred
Jacobs of Hays and Virgil Jacobs of La Crosse; and one sister, Sharon Swann
of Oklahoma City, Okla. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Donald
Jacobs, Charles Jacobs, Leroy Jacobs and Larry Jacobs.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Benjamin
Martin officiating. Burial will be at the La Crosse City Cemetery. Friends
may call from 2-9 p.m. Tuesday and prior to the service Wednesday, all at
Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse. Memorials are suggested to donor's
choice, in care of the funeral home.
Dr. Fagan N. White 1911-2000
RUSSELL - Dr. Fagan N. White, 89, died Aug. 30 at Russell Regional
Hospital. He was born Jan. 5, 1911, the son of Benjamin and Alice Ward
White. He attended Sterling College and received his medical degree from
Colorado University in Denver, Colo. A resident of Russell, coming from
Colorado, he was involved in the medical field until his retirement in the
mid 1980's. He married
Joyce M. Hawes June 4, 1938, at Russell. She died
Sept. 7, 1978. He then married
Esther Laubhan Tague Dec. 23, 1979, at
Russell.
White was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Rotary Club, Elks
Lodge and Masonic Lodge, all of Russell. He was also a member of ISIS
Shrine of Salina and numerous national and state medical associations.
Survivors inlcude his wife of the home; three sons, Ward White of
Georgetown, D.C., Daniel White of Houston, Texas, and Brett White of Los
Angeles, Calif.; three half sisters, Betty Watters of Odessa, Wash., Jenny
Jo Newby and Margaret Odem, both of Sterling; and four grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church with the Revs. Glenn
Tombaugh and Henry Hartman officiating. Burial will be at Russell City
Cemetery. Friends may call until 9 tonight at Pohlman's Mortuary in
Russell, and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the church or Russell Regional Hospital, both in
care of the funeral home.
Walter Shorock 1921-2000
KEARNY, N.J. - Walter Shorock, 78, died Aug. 25 at West Hudson Hospital in
Kearny. He was born Oct. 25, 1921. He married
Isobel McCutcheon. A resident
of Kearny, he was a self-employed carpenter and builder for 38 years until
his retirement in 1988.
Shorock was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Rotary Club, both in
Kearny. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served aboard a ship in Japan on
V-J Day Sept. 2, 1945. He was also a member of Merchant Marines from
1942-1943.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Donald Walter Shorock
of Great Bend, Paul T. Shorock of Albuquerque, N.M., and Eric A. Shorock of
Lambertville, N.J.; two sisters, Eve S. Gaydos and Nadga Schorock; and two
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Aug. 28. Arrangements were handled by Thiele
Funeral Home in Kearny.
Gary Lee Herdt 1942-2000
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Gary Lee Herdt, 58, died Aug. 4 at his home in Salt
Lake City. He was born July 30, 1942, at Great Bend, the son of Alvin and
Lydia Ehrlich Herdt. A resident of Salt Lake City, coming from Hoisington
and Great Bend, he was a maintenance employee for Salt Lake City
International Airport.
Herdt was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Hoisington. He was a U.S.
Navy veteran.
Survivors include two sons, Alvin Herdt of Nashville, Tenn., and William
Herdt of Salt Lake City; two daughters, Gari Herdt and Michelle Herdt, both
of Salt Lake City; and two grandchildren.
Memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev.
Kelly Taylor Schaus officiating. Inurnment will be at Hoisington Cemetery
with military graveside rites. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested
to Gary Herdt Memorial Fund, in care of Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in
Hoisington.
B. Irene Otte 1923-2000
B. Irene Otte, 77, died Aug. 30. She was born June 3, 1923. Survivors and
funeral arrangements will be announced by Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in
Great Bend.
Ruby Pearl Walter 1907-2000
Ruby Pearl Walter, 92, died Aug. 28 at Great Bend. She was born Nov. 15,
1907, at Eldorado Springs, Mo., the daughter of Arthur William and Elta
Mary Johnson Luther. She was a graduate of Garden City High School and
attended Fort Hays State University. She married
Carlis BertrumWalter Dec.
21, 1933, at Great Bend. A resident of Great Bend since 1940, she was a
homemaker.
Mrs. Walter was a member of First Southern Baptist Church in Great Bend.
Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Loren S. Walter of San
Antonio, Texas, and Gary S. Walter of Holt, Mo.; two daughters, Janet
Albrecht of Farmington, N.M., and Alma Jean Walter of Great Bend; one
brother, Orville Luther of Hutchinson; one sister, Goldie Parker of Irving,
Texas; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by two daughters, Bernice A. Stilts and Carla J. McGlynn; one
brother, Arlo Luther; six sisters, Frances Foltz, Lola Parker, Lora Fay,
Elvia Owens, Jean Fulcher and Willa Norris; and three grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fryberger Mortuary in Great Bend with
Doyle Smith, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery.
Friends may call until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time
Thursday, all at the mortuary. Family will receive friends from 1 p.m.
until service time Thursday. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care
of the funeral home.
Leslie C. Schrepel 1931-2000
ELLINWOOD - Leslie C. Schrepel, 69, died Aug. 28 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born Aug. 2, 1931, in rural
Claflin, the son of Milton F. and Elsie Boyle Schrepel. He married
Carol L.
Kimball Sept. 9, 1956, at Great Bend. A resident of Ellinwood since 1974,
coming from Medicine Lodge, he was a drafting instructor at Barton County
Community College until his retirement in 1993.
Schrepel was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and American Legion,
both of Ellinwood; Veterans of Foreign Wars in Great Bend and Brotherhood
of Jointers and Carpenters. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in
post-World War II Germany.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Stephen Wayne Schrepel
of Hoisington, Terry Scott Schrepel of Buellton, Calif., and Mark Alan
Schrepel of Goddard; one daughter, Vickie Jo Bahr of Broomfield, Colo.; two
brothers, Wilfred Schrepel of Ulysses and Milton F. "J.R." Schrepel of Fort
Worth, Texas; one sister, Lila McDermed of Corsicana, Texas; and seven
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Marjorie Meeker,
Twila Schrepel and Lorene Schrepel.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Andy Keltner
officiating. Burial will be at Lakin-Comanche cemetery in Ellinwood.
Friends may call until 9 tonight, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday, all at
Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend, and from 9:15 a.m. until
service time Friday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Clara Barton
Hospital or American Heart Association - Research Department, both in care
of the funeral home.
Helen D. Seeman 1912-2000
LARNED - Helen D. Seeman, 88, died Aug. 29 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Joseph Campus in Larned. She was born May 11, 1912, in Pawnee
County, the daughter of George E. and Sara Hogue Dipman. She married
George
P. Seeman Jr., Feb. 19, 1935. He died May 21, 1970. A lifetime resident of
Pawnee County, she was a farmer and rancher.
Mrs. Seeman was a member of Pleasant Hill Methodist Church of Ash Valley,
Farm Bureau, Farmer's Union, Ash Valley Grange and former member of EHU.
Survivors include two sons, George Seeman III and Winston C. Seeman, both
of Larned; one daughter, Karlene K. Meckfessel of Garfield; one brother,
John Dipman of Larned; six grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Russell Dipman, Charley Dipman,
Ralph Dipman and Raymond Dipman; and three sisters, Clara Byrum, Florence
Smith and Alma Bradford.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary in Larned with the
Rev. Jim Hawthorne officiating. Burial will be at Larned Cemetery. Friends
may call until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m.
until service time Friday, all at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to
Great Bend Humane Society or donor's choice, both in care of the mortuary.
