Jake Herbel 1907-2000
DORRANCE - Jake Herbel, 93, died July 16 at Russell Regional Hospital in
Russell. He was born April 14, 1907, in Dorrance, the son of David and
Julia Steinle Herbel. He married
Minnie Betz June 14, 1936, at Dubuque. A
lifetime resident of Dorrance, he was a farmer and stockman.
Herbel was a member of First Lutheran Church in Dorrance.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Marilyn Betts of
McCook, Neb.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by two brothers, David Herbel and Reinhart Herbel; and
three sisters, Marie Anschutz, Lydia Nuss and Amelia Miller.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Foster Mortuary Chapel in Wilson
with the Rev. Diane Wagner officiating. Friends may visit until 6 tonight
and from 8 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the mortuary. Memorials are
suggested to Russell County 4-H Developmental Fund, American Diabetes
Association or donor's choice.
Carmel 'Hoot' Ray Gibson 1924-2000
Carmel "Hoot" Ray Gibson, 76, died July 14 at Great Bend. He was born June
12, 1924, at Monticello, Ky., the son of Elig and Bertha Walker Gibson. He
attended Cleveland, Okla., schools. He married
Geraldine Catherine Schmidt
Oct. 6, 1947, at Great Bend. She died Nov. 12, 1979. A resident of Great
Bend since 1970, coming from Russell, he was a pumper with Isern Wells for
20 years, worked for Thies Packing for nine years and for the Great Bend
Cemetery for eight years.
Gibson was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a U.S. Marine
veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific arena.
Survivors include three sons, Richard Gibson of Olathe, Jarel Gibson of
Plano, Texas, and Laniel Gibson of Norman, Okla.; one daughter, Carma Grion
of Cathedral City, Calif.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by three brothers, Merle Gibson, Starling Gibson and Oza Gibson; and two
sisters, Gladys Taylor and Mary Eichmann.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Fryberger Mortuary Chapel
with the Rev. Don Paden officiating. Private inurnment will be at a later
date. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday and the family
will receive friends at 2 p.m. Wednesday, both at the mortuary. Memorials
are suggested to Central Kansas Medical Center Foundation, in care of the
mortuary.
Fred L. Conner 1909-2000
Fred L. Conner, 90, died July 16 at St. Joseph's Health Center in Kansas
City, Mo. He was born Nov. 30, 1909, in Hutchinson. He married
Helen Opie
in 1940. She died in 1995. He was a 1934 graduate of the University of
Kansas School of Law. A resident of Great Bend, he practiced law in Kansas
from 1934-1997, first in Ness City and then in Great Bend.
Conner was a member of the Kansas Bar Association for 65 years, serving as
its president in 1980-1981. As a Kansas Judicial Council committee member,
he was involved in the redistricting of the district courts of Kansas in
the 1960s. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Red
Cross and Masonic Lodge. He was one of the organizers and chairman of the
Great Bend Community Chest's first fund-raising drive in 1947. A Great Bend
Rotary Club member since 1935, he served as its president in 1948. From
1954-1962, he was active in the Boy Scouts as a leader from the local cub
level to faculty for the Philmont Ranch Adult Training Center in New
Mexico. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in naval
intelligence.
Survivors include one son, Brian Conner of Salina and one grandson.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church
in Great Bend with the Revs. Jana Baxter and Raymond Knowles officiating.
Burial will be at the Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-9
tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Bryant-Christians Funeral
Home in Great Bend. Memorials are suggested to the Conner Memorial Music
Library at the church, in care of the funeral home.
Marjorie Newcombe 1921-2000
CRESTON, Iowa - Marjorie O'Riley Newcombe, 78, died July 12 at Greater
Community Hospital in Creston. She was born Oct. 29, 1921, in Corning,
Iowa, the daughter of William Henry and Elma Irene Gillett O'Riley. She
married Fred Newcombe. He died in 1983. A longtime resident of Great Bend,
living in Mesa, Ariz., and Creston during the summers, she was a farm wife.
Survivors include two daughters, Marianne Isern of Ellinwood, and Janet
Rippel of Rapid City, S.D.; special friend, Marvin Thuman of Creston; six
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
two brothers, Wayne O'Riley and Harold "Mick" O'Riley; and four sisters,
Wilma Cannon, Ruth Ann Necomb, Hallene Shires and Pauline Cooney.
Memorial services were held July 15 at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Creston
with the Rev. Scott Hultgren officiating. Cremation has taken place. Burial
will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Golden Belt Home
Health and Hospice in Great Bend.
Arthur Besthorn 1916-2000
HOLYROOD - Arthur Besthorn, 84, died July 17 at Good Samaritan Retirement
Village, Villa Grace, in Ellsworth. He was born April 22, 1916, in
Ellsworth County, the son of Hans William Christopher and Wilhelmine Louise
Heiken Besthorn. He married
Viola K. Ross June 2, 1940, at Ellinwood. A
lifetime resident of Holyrood, he was a farmer and rural route mail carrier
for 25 years in the Holyrood and Hoisington areas.
Besthorn was a member of Holyrood American Legion, Order of Eastern Star of
Holyrood, Isis Shrine and consistory of Salina, AF and AM Lodge 146 of
Ellsworth and St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Holyrood. He was a U.S.
Air Force veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of the home; and one sister, Agnes Walton of
Lyons. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Elsie Stoltenberg, Olinda
Burmeister, Bertha Boye and an infant sister; and one brother, Herman
Besthorn.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Mary
Lou Klein officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. Friends may
visit from 1-8 tonight at Parsons Funeral Home in Ellsworth and from 9:30
a.m. to service time Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to
the church or Ellsworth County Ambulance Service, in care of the funeral
home.
Selma Caroline Wikoff 1914-2000
LYONS - Selma Caroline Wikoff, 86, died July 15 at Lyons District Hospital.
She was born June 25, 1914, at Chase, the daughter of George and Marie Ruhl
Dipple. She married
Virgil Keesling June 12, 1935. He died Aug. 23, 1951.
She married
Lawrence Wikoff Jan. 12, 1963. He died May 10, 1992. A resident
of Lyons since 1958, she was a retired cook for Lyons and Chase school
districts and Rice County Farms.
Mrs. Wikoff was a member of Lyons First Christian Church, Christian Women's
Fellowship, Rebecah Crystal Lodge, Lyons Music Club and a Lyons District
Hospital volunteer, all of Lyons.
Survivors include two daughters, Roberta May of Whitney, Texas, and Barbara
Sherman of Lyons; one stepson, Dennis Wikoff of Lyons; two stepdaughters,
Sharry Tice of West Chester, Penn., and Kala Taylor of Lyons; three
sisters, Rosa Yost of La Crosse, Matilda Boldt of Pratt and Bertha
Kretzmann of Lyons; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by five sisters, Anna Blank, Elizabeth Cline, Amelia Cox,
Elsie Keesling and Flora Riedel; and one grandson.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Tom Eastman
officiating. Burial will be at Lyons Municipal Cemetery. Friends may call
from 2-7 tonight at Sillin Funeral Home in Lyons. Memorials are suggested
to the church or donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home.
Willis O. Rosenberg 1931-2000
Willis O. Rosenberg, 68, died July 15 at his home in Great Bend. He was
born Sept. 13, 1931, at Kennsington, the son of James O. and Helen S.
Kinyon Rosenberg. He married
Allison Crawford Aug. 18, 1984, at Grand
Prairie, Texas. A resident of Great Bend since 1948, coming from Jewell, he
was an accountant for L.D. Drilling and treasurer for First Assembly of God
Church.
Rosenberg was a member of First Assembly of God Church. He was a veteran of
the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Joe Rosenberg of St. John
and Dan Rosenberg of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one stepson, Tracy Crawford
of Grand Prairie; one stepdaughter, Marsha Goude of Nokomis, Fla.; his
parents; two brothers, the Rev. Hugh Rosenberg of Fairfield, Ohio, and
Harold Rosenberg of Aurora, Colo.; five grandchildren; and six
stepgrandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Revs. Brad
Rosenberg, Hugh Rosenberg and David Hartsell officiating. Burial will be at
Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend. Friends may call until 9 tonight at
Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend and from 9 a.m. until service
time Tuesday at the church. Family will receive friends from 7-9 tonight at
the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church building fund,
American Cancer Society, or Golden Belt Home Health and Hospice, all in
care of the funeral home.
Fred L. Conner 1909-2000
Fred L. Conner, 90, of Great Bend died July 16 at Kansas City, Mo.
Survivors and funeral arrangements will be announced by Bryant-Christians
Funeral Home in Great Bend.
Michael Lee Clarke 1963-2000
JETMORE - Michael Lee Clarke, 37, died July 15 at Hodgeman County Health
Center in Jetmore as the result of an automobile accident. He was born May
30, 1963, at Jetmore, the son of Velven and Joanne Babin Clarke. A lifetime
resident of Jetmore, he was a truck driver and motor-home technician.
Clarke was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Jetmore and The
American Motorcycle Association.
Survivors include his fiancee, Regina Akers of Burdett; two sons, Jeremy
Lynn Page and Joseph Ryan Clarke, both of Dodge City; one daughter,
Jennifer Raenae Clarke of Dodge City; his parents; two brothers, Daniel
Clarke of Mount Hope and Kelly Clarke of Jetmore; and one sister, Bonny
White of Kingsdown.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Bob
Schremmer officiating. Burial will be at Fairmount cemetery in Jetmore.
Friends may call until 8 tonight at Beckwith Funeral Home in Jetmore.
