Vida Jane Gates Appl 1901-2000
MANHATTAN - Vida Jane Gates Appl, 98, died May 28 at Stoneybrook Retirement
Center in Manhattan. She was born July 31, 1901, at Stafford County, the
daughter of Ralph Cook and Martha Elizabeth Smith Gates. She was a 1919
graduate of St. John High School and a 1926 graduate of the University of
Kansas. She married
Fred C. Appl Aug. 29, 1928, at Pretty Prairie. He died
Nov. 5, 1984. A resident of Manhattan, coming from Great Bend, she was a
homemaker and retired teacher. She also helped her husband establish and
operate a motel in Great Bend from 1937 until 1969.
Mrs. Appl was a member of First Christian Church in Great Bend, Daughters
of the American Revolution, Women's Christian Temperance Union, American
Association of University Women and the Washington Club.
Survivors include two sons, Fredric C. Appl of Manhattan and Franklin J.
Appl of Norman, Okla.; two sisters, Gladys Eaves of Lamar, Colo., and
Thelma Hammond of Denver, Colo.; six granddaughters; and six
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John Gates
and Arthur Gates; and five sisters, May Weiszbrod, Amy McCoy, Clara Nelson,
Goldie Hooper and Lucy Gates.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bryant-Christians Chapel in Great
Bend with the Rev. William F. Johnson officiating. Burial will be at
Fairview Park cemetery in St. John. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Lloyd O. Maggard 1913-2000
LA CROSSE - Lloyd O. Maggard, 86, died May 28 at Rush County Memorial
Hospital in La Crosse. He was born Dec. 4, 1913, on a farm northeast of
Oberlin, the son of Roy and Dollie Van Pelt Maggard. He was a 1934 graduate
of Decatur High School. He married
Blanche Petracek June 21, 1942, at
Jennings. A longtime resident of La Crosse, he and his wife established
Rush County Locker Service, which they operated until 1975.
Maggard was a member of First Christian Church in La Crosse, and served as
a church deacon and elder. He served on the city commission from 1952
through 1954, serving as mayor in 1953. He also served on the La Crosse
School Board and Rush County Memorial Hospital Board. He was a member of
American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Masonic Lodge, all of La
Crosse. He was also a member of La Crosse Chamber of Commerce and served as
its president. He served as a volunteer for SCORE, served a term as
president for Kansas Meat Packers Association and president of Kansas
Frozen Food Association. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served
in World War II. He fought in the European Theater with the 1st Army, 759th
Tank Batallion, Hurtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Roger Maggard of
Anchorage, Alaska; two daughters, Linda Conard of Hutchinson and Carol
Garbacik of Philomath, Ore.; three sisters, Ola Yauk of McCook, Neb., Zola
Brown of Selden and Ella Betts of Oberlin; and two grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church in La Crosse with the
Rev. Troy Schroeder officiating. Burial will be at La Crosse Cemetery.
Friends may call until 9 tonight at Janousek Funeral Home in La Crosse.
Prayer service will be at 7 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are
suggested to the church or Rush County Memorial Hospital, in care of the
funeral home.
Raymond F. Bleich 1922-2000
PAXTON, Ill. - Raymond F. Bleich, 78, of Paxton, died May 20 at Gibson Area
Hospital in Gibson City, Ill. He was born Jan. 14, 1922, at Thawville,
Ill., the son of Gustave and Olga Zabel Bleich. He married
Elsie S. Snyder
Steiner Jan. 12, 1980, at Buckley, Ill. He was employed at Bear Brand
Hosiery in Paxton several years and for 21 years owned and operated Ray's
Texaco in Buckley.
Bleich was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Buckley, and a former
member of the church choir. He was also a member of Lions Club and Chamber
of Commerce, both of Buckley. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served
with the 103rd Cannon Company in both New Guinea and the Philippines. He
was awarded the Bronze Star.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Eric Bleich of Lake
Iroquois, Loda, Ill.; three daughters, Melanie Niemann of Paxton; Karna
Armstrong of Mansfield, Ill.; and Valerie Dryden of Larned; one stepson,
John Snyder of Crescent City, Ill.; one sister, Frieda Ringeisen of Red
Wing, Minn.; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two
stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two
sisters.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Ford-Baier Funeral Home in Buckley.
Mary Avalene Lewis 1923-2000
Mary Avalene Lewis, 76, died July 29 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St.
Rose Campus in Great Bend. She was born Sept. 30, 1923, in Johnson County,
Ill., the daughter of Oliver and Loa Stokes Mozley. She married
Joseph E.
Lewis Jr. Aug. 14, 1943. She was a resident of Great Bend since 1943.
Mrs. Lewis was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three sons, Terry Lewis of
Jacksonville, Ark., Thomas Lewis and Timothy Lewis, both of Great Bend;
four daughters, Ann Whithom of Great Bend, Christy Denney of Newton, Kay
Schwartz of Salina and Lori Jackson of Plano, Texas; two brothers, Charles
Franklin Mozley of Leawood and James F. Mozley of Pensacola, Fla.; 13
grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Altar Society rosary will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorial
service will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the Rev. Angel Dy
officiating. Memorials are suggested to the church or St. Rose Altar
Society.
Erma A. Evans 1906-2000
ST. JOHN - Erma A. Evans, 94, died
July 29 at Boulder County Hospice Center in Louisville, Colo. She was born July 27, 1906, at St. John, the
daughter of Louis and Mary Abbott. She was a 1924 graduate and salutatorian
of St. John High School and received her advanced teaching certificate from
Fort Hays State College. She married
F.S. "Bob" Evans June 24, 1951, at
Stafford. He died in 1987. A resident of Boulder since 1992, she was a
school teacher for 23 years, past owner of Beauty Shop and Evans Investment
Company.
Mrs. Evans was a member of First United Methodist Church in St. John.
Survivors include one stepson, Gerald L. Evans of Boulder, Colo.; three
step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and one step
great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one brother, Louis
Allen Abbott.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fairview Park cemetery in
St. John with the Rev. W. Harlan Rittgers officiating. Friends may call
from 10 a.m. until noon Wednesday at Minnis Chapel in St. John. Memorials
are suggested to Youthville in Newton or to the church, both in care of the
funeral home.
Leslie V. Wegele 1933-2000
Leslie V. Wegele, 66, died July 28 at his home in Pratt. He was born Sept.
8, 1933, in Hoisington, the son of Alex and Marie Zimmerman Wegele. He
married Doris Ann Cromer July 3, 1954, at Hoisington. A resident of Pratt
since 1971, he was co-owner and operator of Wegele & Wegele Van Lines.
Wegele was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Elks and American
Legion, all of Pratt. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving from 1953-1955.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Jeffrey Wegele of
Hutchinson and Blaze Wegele of Pratt; two brothers, Clarence Wegele of
McPherson and Wilmer Wegele of Pratt; two sisters, Esther Cromwell and
Elsie Hicks, both of Hoisington; five grandchildren; and two
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, John Wegele.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. Lon
Landsmann officiating. Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at
Golden Belt Memorial cemetery in Great Bend with military honors provided
by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may call until 8 tonight at Larrison
Mortuary in Pratt. Memorials are suggested to Our Savior Lutheran Elevator
Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Norman L. Zecha Sr. 1926-2000
PORTLAND, Ore. - Norman L. Zecha Sr., 73, died July 7 in Portland. He was
born Nov. 30, 1926, in Odin, the son of Emil and Mary Kinzel Zecha. He
married Irene Kuhn May 21, 1949, in Hays. A resident of Portland since
1953, coming from Great Bend, he was a molder for Esco Corp. of Portland.
Zecha was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church of Portland.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Norman Leroy Zecha Jr. of
Eagle Creek, Ore.; one daughter, Judy Lundberg of Beaverton, Ore.; three
brothers, Norbert Zecha of Portland, Joe Zecha of Denver, Colo., and
Bernard Zecha of Cheyenne, Wyo.; four sisters, Marcella Vink, Bernice
Henderson and Clarissa Blessing, all of Great Bend, and Ethel Ricker of
Nashville; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by one brother, Irving Zecha.
Funeral was July 12 at the church. Burial was at Sunnyside Chimes Memorial
Garden cemetery in Portland. Stehn's Foster Road Funeral Home of Portland
was in charge of arrangements.
Jody Allen Charles 1973-2000
Jody Allen Charles, 27, died July 24 at his home in Great Bend. He was born
Jan. 16, 1973, in Beardstown, Ill. A resident of Great Bend, he was a
welder at Great Bend Manufacturing.
Charles attended First Church of the Nazarene in Great Bend.
Survivors include two sons, Andrew Charles and Damien Charles, both of
Salina; his mother, Pam Pennington; his stepfather, Tony Pennington; one
brother, Dustin Pennington of Goodland; one sister, Jennifer Pennington of
Goodland; his grandparents, Bill and Ann Pickle of Great Bend; and
great-grandmother, Marie Pickle of Great Bend.
Graveside services and inurnment will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Golden Belt
Memorial Park in Great Bend with the Rev. Don Paden officiating. Friends
may call until 8 tonight at Great Bend Family Mortuary. Memorials are
suggested to Andrew and Damien Charles' School Fund, in care of the funeral
home.
Roger Mathias Kramp 1928-2000
ELLINWOOD - An addition has been made to the obituary information that was
printed in the July 27 edition of the Tribune. An Altar Society rosary will
be at 3 today at Kimple Funeral Home in Ellinwood.
Jack F. Shumate Sr. 1934-2000
Jack F. Shumate Sr., 65, died July 18 at his home in Great Bend. He was
born July 23, 1934, at Kirksville, Mo., the son of Dr. Fred and Helen Gooch
Shumate. A resident of Great Bend, he was employed as a carpet layer.
Shumate was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the Korean War.
Survivors include three sons, the Rev. Jack Shumate Jr. of Clackamas, Ore.,
Jeff Alan Shumate of Portland, Ore., and Jason Lee Shumate of Coosbay,
Ore.; and three grandchildren.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at White Chapel Memorial
Gardens in Wichita with the Rev. Jack Shumate Jr. officiating. The body has
been cremated. Funeral arrangements were handled by Great Bend Family
Mortuary & Crematory.
