Lottie M. Ewing 1915-2000
Lottie M. Ewing, 84, of Great Bend died April 12 at Integrated Health
Services of Great Bend. She was born Dec. 4, 1915, at Dorrance, the
daughter of Emmanuel and Hattie Bell Thorne. She married
Fred Ewing June
20, 1936. He died in 1951. A long-time resident of Lawrence, she lived in
Topeka for several years and was a nurse's aide. She moved to Great Bend
and worked as a restaurant cook.
Survivors include two sisters, Gladys Newport of McCallester, Okla., and
Dorothy Harris of Omaha, Neb. She was preceded in death by seven brothers
including Roy Throne of Abilene.
Family graveside services will be held. Cremation has taken place. Danner
Funeral Home of Abilene is in charge of services and inurnment. Great Bend
Family Mortuary and Crematory is in charge of local arangements.

Clem Penka 1923-2000
PRATT - Clem Penka, 76, died April 13 at Pratt Regional Medical Center in
Pratt. He was born May 3, 1923, at Beaver, the son of William W. and Ann
Meyeres Penka. He married
Ursuline J. Birzer May 17, 1945, at Ellinwood. A
resident of Pratt and Pratt County since 1963, he was a retired assistant
manager at Cairo Co-op and a farmer.
Penka was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pratt, Knights of
Columbus 4th Degree, B.P.O. Elks No. 1451 of Pratt and a former member of
Sunflower Polka Club.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Alvin Penka of San
Bernardino, Calif., Thomas A. Penka of Pratt, and David Penka of Kansas
City, Mo.; one daughter, Jeanne Voss of Iuka; one brother, Victor Penka of
Healy; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother,
Bill Penka.
Vigil service will be at 7:30 tonight at the church. Funeral will be at
10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Jim Dieker officiating.
Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery in Pratt. Friends may visit until 8
tonight at Larrison Mortuary in Pratt. Memorials are suggested to Sacred
Heart School Endowment Fund or the church, in care of the mortuary.

Glenn Edward Peer 1912-2000
WICHITA - Glenn Edward Peer, 88, died April 11 at Wesley Medical Center in
Wichita. He was born Jan. 30, 1912, at Vinland, the son of Robert Carl and
Grace McQuiston Peer. He married
Genevieve G. Balch Oct. 13, 1931, at
Olathe. She died Oct. 5, 1999. He was a 1931 graduate of Edgerton High
School, a 1936 graduate of Pittsburg State University and received a
master's degree in education from University of Kansas in 1955. A resident
of the Johnson County and Miami County areas for most of his life, he had
been a state auditor for the Department of Education in Topeka and a
teacher and coach at Edna, Spring Hill, Hoisington, Edgerton and Gardner.
He had been a principal at Spring Hill Elementary, Bucyrus Grade School
and Fontana High School, retiring in 1972.
Peer was a member of United Methodist Church of Edgerton, having taught
Sunday school, and was a member and past president of Miami County Retired
Teacher's Association.
Survivors include two sons, Carl G. Peer of Gardner and Dr. Gary Peer of
Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; two daughters, Karen Robertson of Wichita and Marilyn
Salyer of Great Bend; two brothers, Raymond "Shine" Peer and Jess Peer,
both of Gardner; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by two brothers, Claire Peer and Marion Peer; and one
sister, Esther Cochran.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be at
Edgerton cemetery in Edgerton. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Friday at
Bruce Funeral Home in Gardner. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested
to the church or the Glenn and Genevieve Peer Scholarship at Pittsburg
State University Foundation, both in care of the funeral home.

Norma G. Garton 1911-2000
LARNED - Norma G. Garton, 88, died April 10 at Hutchinson Hospital Skilled
Nursing Unit in Hutchinson. She was born Sept. 17, 1911, at Aline, Okla.,
the daughter of Joseph and Effie Stevens Cleveland. She married
Thomas
Newton Garton Oct. 20, 1931. He died April 12, 1972. A longtime Larned
resident, she was a retired cook for the Larned school district.
Mrs. Garton was a member of First Christian Church, Best of the West Club,
La Ar Mu, and Christian Women's Fellowship, all of Larned.
Survivors include two daughters, Ellen M. Gicante of Peculiar, Mo., and
Carolyn Taylor of Hutchinson; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren;
and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two
brothers, Loman Cleveland and Edward Cleveland; and five sisters, Jo Grove,
Mable Booze, Eula Diggs, Flossie Wilt and Ella King.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned with
the Revs. Dan Lundgren and Lewis McPherren officiating. Burial will be at
Larned cemetery in Larned. Friends may call until 8 tonight, 9 a.m. to 8
p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society or American Heart
Association, both in care of the funeral home.

Wilbert W. Boese 1924-2000
SUSANK - Wilbert W. Boese, 75, died April 10 at Clara Barton Hospital in
Hoisington. He was born Aug. 4, 1924, at Alexander, the son of William and
Pearl Estella Allen Boese. He married
Gwendolyn May Norman June 15, 1949,
at Larned. She died Aug. 31, 1999. A resident of the Susank and Hoisington
areas for 45 years, he was a retired driller for Allen Drilling Co.
Boese was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include two sons, Dennis L. Boese of Great Bend and David L.
Boese of Susank; one daughter, Diana L. Wilson of Susank; one sister, Fern
Nairn of Great Bend; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by three brothers, Vernon Boese, Elmer Boese and
Robert Boese; and one sister, Viola Ellis.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Brown's Grove cemetery in
Burdett with the Rev. Rob Schmutz officiating. Friends may call until 8
tonight and 9-11 a.m. Thursday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in
Hoisington. Memorials are suggested to the family, in care of the funeral
home.

Loretta A. Heinz 1909-2000
BUSHTON - Loretta A. Heinz, 90, died April 10 at Ellinwood District
Hospital in Ellinwood. She was born Oct. 1, 1909, in Barton County, the
daughter of Peter Heinz and Mary Robl Heinz. She married
Casper A. Heinz
April 19, 1937, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church at rural Ellinwood.
He died Feb. 2, 1993. A resident of Bushton, she was a farm wife.
Mrs. Heinz was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and Altar Society,
both at Bushton.
Survivors include one son, Mark Heinz of Ellinwood; two daughters, Mary L.
Smith of Wichita and Patty Lorence of Ellsworth; one brother, Frank Heinz
of Ellinwood; one sister, Margaret Feist of Ellinwood; and four
grandchildren.
A family rosary will be at 7:30 tonight, Altar Society rosary will be at 3
p.m. Wednesday and a parish rosary at 7:30 p.m., all at Kimple Inc. Funeral
Home in Ellinwood.Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church
with the Revs. Chrys Eh Maung, James J. Roth and Gerald Hammeke
officiating. Burial will be at Holy Name Church cemetery in Ellinwood.

LaVern Loren George 1934-2000
LARNED - LaVern Loren George, 65, died April 10 at Central Kansas Medical
Center, St. Joseph Campus in Larned. He was born July 7, 1934, at Great
Bend, the son of Herman Henry Dick and Hilda Anna Christine Tammen George.
He married
Rose Marie Debes Dec. 30, 1970, at Larned. A lifetime Barton and
Pawnee County resident, he was the retired owner and operator of George
Construction of Larned.
George was a member of Peace Lutheran Church; a past Sunday school teacher
and choir member, all of Albert; past president of Larned Zoning Board,
Larned Men's Bowling Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of
Larned. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Mark L. George of
Hutchinson; one daughter, Deana Morrison of Topeka; two brothers, Laurel
George of Larned and LoRay George of Albert; one sister, Irene Nagel of
Larned; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother,
Lloyd George; one halfbrother, Wayne Petersen; one sister, Irma Ell; and
one halfsister, Deborah Rose Petersen.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Peace Lutheran Church of Albert with
the Rev. Ethan Feistner officiating. Burial will be at Peace Lutheran
Church cemetery in Albert with military honors. Friends may call until 8
tonight and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, all at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in

Fred 'Fritz' Lohrey 1918-2000
LA CROSSE - Fred "Fritz" Lohrey, 81, died April 9 at Hays Medical Center,
Hadley Campus in Hays. He was born Sept. 29, 1918, on a farm near Timken,
the son of Jacob and Mary Ickes Lohrey. He married
Fern Lucille West April
23, 1946, at the Methodist Church in La Crosse. She died Feb. 28. He
attended Rush County schools and graduated from La Crosse High School. A
lifetime Rush County resident, he was a farmer on the family farm northeast
of La Crosse and operated the scales at Rush County Livestock Sale Barn for
many years.
Lohrey was a member of United Methodist Church of La Crosse.
Survivors include two sons, Fred Lee Lohrey of La Crosse and Gary Lohrey of
Bison; one sister, Naomi Scheuerman of La Crosse; and two grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by one brother, Elmer Lohrey; and one sister, Linda.
Prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Janousek Funeral Home in
La Crosse. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev.
Kathy Bannister officiating. Graveside services will follow at La Crosse
City cemetery in La Crosse. Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. today and from 9
a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, all at the funeral home, and until service time
