Richard Earl Bowman 1908-2000
PAWNEE ROCK - Richard Earl Bowman, 91, died April 24 at Integrated Health
Services in Great Bend. He was born Oct. 24, 1908, in Pawnee Rock, the son
of Earl J. and Buena Vista Holland Bowman. A lifetime resident of Pawnee
Rock, he was a farmer.
Bowman was a member of Methodist Church and American Legion, both of Pawnee
Rock, and Kapa Sigma Fraternity at Kansas State University in Manhattan. He
was a veteran of World War II, serving as technical sergeant, 25th Division
Medical Corps during the Pacific campaign in the Philippines at Guadal
Canal.
Survivors include four nephews, Joseph Bowman of Pawnee Rock, Phillip
Bowman of Salina, Brent Bowman of Manhattan and James Bowman of Albert; one
niece, Jane Johnson of Bella Vista, Ark. He was preceded in death by two
brothers, George Henry Bowman and Edward Alan Bowman; and one sister,
Marjorie Fullerton.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary Chapel in Larned
with the Rev. Bill Wolf officiating. Burial with military graveside honors
will be at Pawnee Rock cemetery in Pawnee Rock. Friends may call from 9
a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday and 9 a.m. until service time on Friday
at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the
mortuary.

Helen M. Karst 1910-2000
HOISINGTON - Helen M. Karst, 89, died April 25 at Hoisington Rehabilitation
Center in Hoisington. She was born Oct. 12, 1910, in Olmitz, the daughter
of Clarence and Margaret Murdy Boyle. She married
Theodore Karst May 12,
1934, at Great Bend. He died Feb. 26, 1996. A longtime resident of
Hoisington, she taught school for six years and was employed by Verna's of
Hoisington, Wiley's and J.C. Penney of Great Bend.
Mrs. Karst was a member of First United Methodist Church, Church Circles,
BPW, Cameo Club and OES Una Chapter 119, all of Hoisington.
Survivors include two sons, Larry K. Karst of Joplin, Mo., and Don R. Karst
of Woodbury, Minn.; one sister, Clara Schugart of Great Bend; four
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
one sister, Myrtle Cook.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. Wayne Flanders
officiating. Burial will be at Hoisington cemetery in Hoisington. Friends
may call from 1-5 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at
Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in Hoisington. Family will receive friends
from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday. The casket will be closed. Memorials are
suggested to donor's choice, in care of the funeral home.

Thomas E. Cushinberry 1923-2000
TOPEKA - Thomas E. Cushinberry, 77, died April 24 at Topeka Hospital in
Topeka. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Capital City Community
Church of God in Topeka. Burial will be at Topeka Cemetery. Friends may
call from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Bowser-Johnson Funeral Chapel in Topeka.

Nancy L. Cody 1937-2000
EL DORADO - Nancy L. Cody, 62, of El Dorado died April 22 at Wesley Medical
Center in Wichita. She was born July 11, 1937, at Latham, the daughter of
Curtis and Retha Rause Cartmell. She married
Harry Frank Cody Feb. 6, 1954,
in Augusta. A resident of El Dorado, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband of the home; four sons, John Cody, Robert
Cody and Carl Cody, all of El Dorado, and Dale Cody of Gorham; one
daughter, Debra Grissom of El Dorado; her mother, Retha Cartmell; five
brothers, Eldon Cartmell, Frank Cartmell, James Cartmell, Gary Cartmell and
Earl Cartmell; five sisters, Lola Knouf, Mary Howard, Pansy Howard, Martha
Howard and Eleanor Witson; and 15 grandchildren. She was preceded in death
by one son, Walter Cody; one daughter, Martha Wienke; and one
granddaughter.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kirby-Morris Funeral Home in El
Dorado with the Revs. David Shaffer and John White officiating. Burial will
be at the Sunset Lawns cemetery in El Dorado. Visitation will be until 8
p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Lions Club
Eye Bank in care of the funeral home.

Harry Eugene 'Gene' Ellis 1938-2000
MERRIAM - Harry Eugene 'Gene' Ellis, 61, died April 21 at his home after a
long illness. He was born Aug. 25, 1938, in Council Grove, the son of Harry
and Lucille Ellis. He married
Diana Scheck. He attended Council Grove High
School. He was the owner of Gene Ellis Ford in Lindsborg and also worked in
real estate and advertising.
Ellis was a member of the Lions Club, Rotary Club, Kiwanis, Toast Masters
and AMBUCS. He also served as Bass Master for the McPherson Bass Club. He
was a U.S. Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife of the home; his mother of Council Grove; his
father of Clinton, Ark.; three sons, Robert Ellis of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.,
and Greg Carson and Kevin Carson, both of Osage City; one daughter, Hope
Taj of Omaha, Neb.; one brother, Allen Ellis of Topeka; one sister, Lanette
Ellis of Topeka; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
two sons, Scott and Daniel.
Funeral was today at Council Grove. In lieu of flowers, memorials are
suggested to the Kansas City Hospice, 12006 W. 87th Pkwy., Lenexa, KS 66215.

Wilma Jenkins Hunter 1906-2000
STAFFORD - Wilma Jenkins Hunter, 93, died April 23 at the Stafford District
Hospital in Stafford. She was born Oct. 14, 1906, in Stafford, the daughter
of William and Etta Richardson Deniston. She married
Harold A. Jenkins Nov.
17, 1932, at Wichita. He died Jan. 18, 1984. She then married
C.D. "Jack"
Hunter Sept. 21,1985, at Hutchinson. He died Aug. 17, 1991. She was a
graduate of Friends University. A lifetime Stafford resident, she was a
homemaker.
Hunter was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Chapter BK PEO
and the Bridge Club, all of Stafford.
Survivors include one daughter, Louan Talley of Asheville, N.C.; two
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Minnis Chapel in Stafford with
the Revs. Kasey Crosby and Don McCord officiating. Burial will be at
Stafford cemetery in Stafford. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today at the
chapel. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice in care of the chapel.

LARNED - Lorene Gleason, 73, of Larned died April 24 at Kansas University
Medical Center in Kansas City.

ELLINWOOD - Charles J. Billinger, 83, of Ellinwood died April 24 at
Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Rose campus, in Great Bend.

Floyd 'Jim' Bailey 1922-2000
Floyd 'Jim' Bailey, 77, died April 22 at Central Kansas Medical Center, St.
Joseph Campus in Larned. He was born June 19, 1922, at Hudson, the son of
George and Alice G. Miller Bailey. He married
Christine Hudran Oct. 23,
1945, at Pueblo, Colo. A resident of Great Bend since 1950, coming from
Pueblo, he was a retired diesel mechanic for Stevens Engine Service.
Bailey was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Knights of
Columbus, both of Great Bend. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of the home; four brothers, Arthur Bailey of
Great Bend, George Bailey of Mundelien, Ill., Beverly Bailey of Lodi,
Calif., Jerry Bailey of Dodge City; and three sisters, Letha Barker of
Hutchinson, Lois McMullin of Liberal and Norma Jean Burke of New Iberia,
La. He was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Bailey.
Vigil will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary
at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at
the church with the Rev. Charles Mazouch officiating. Burial will be at
Great Bend cemetery with a flag presentation by American Legion Argonne
Post No. 180 of Great Bend. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday
and Wednesday at Bryant-Christians Chapel. Memorials are suggested to St.
Rose School Endowment Fund, in care of the funeral home.

Doris E. Koch 1918-2000
Doris E. Koch, 82, died April 22 at Cherry Village Nursing Home in Great
Bend. She was born April 19, 1918, in Dodge City. She married
Leonard W.
Koch July 22, 1940, at Alva, Okla. She was a nurse's aide at Central Kansas
Medical Center.
Mrs. Koch was a member of Central Baptist Church in Great Bend, Golden Belt
Campers and National Campers and Hikers Association.
Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, E. Ray Koch of
Steamboat Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Betty Immenschuh of Whitehall,
Ohio; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church with Rev. Dr. Gordon
E. Rhodes officiating. Burial will be at Great Bend Cemetery. Friends may
call from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Bryant-Christians Funeral Home and 9:30
a.m. to service time Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to
the church.
