Doris A. Engel 1922-2000
LIBERAL - Doris A. Engel, 77, died April 25 at Aurora, Colo. She was born
Dec. 27, 1922, in McPherson, the daughter of Oscar Sr. and Mildred Johnson
Larson. She married
Jack E. Engel Sept. 23, 1945, at McPherson. He died
Jan. 29, 1997. She was a graduate of the University of Kansas and was a
Watkins Scholar. A longtime resident of Liberal, she was involved in the
family business, Engel Inc., and started two businesses in Liberal, the
Dairy Queen in 1949 and the People's Travel Agency in 1969.
Mrs. Engel was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Liberal,
the American Association of University Women and the Liberal Senior Center,
where she was active in the Sweet Swishers line dance group. She was also
on the board of trustees for Seward County Community College Development
Foundation, one of the founders of the Baker Arts Center in Liberal and was
active in Scouts and youth groups for the church.
Survivors include two sons, John E. Engel of Liberal and Larry Engel of
Dallas, Texas; one daughter, Carol Enright of Longmont, Colo.; three
brothers, Oscar Larson of Galva, Robert Larson of Great Bend and Lewis
Larson of Pretty Prairie; two sisters, Ruth Taylor of Oklahoma City, Okla.,
and Marjorie Halloway of Wichita; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded
in death by one brother, Pete Larson.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. Phil Shull
officiating. Burial will be at Liberal Cemetery. Friends may call until 9
tonight at Kitch Funeral Home in Liberal. Family will receive friends from
5-7 tonight. Memorials are suggested to the Baker Arts Center or to the
church, in care of the funeral home.

Helen M. Komarek 1912-2000
HOISINGTON - Helen M. Komarek, 87, died April 26 at Clara Barton Hospital
in Hoisington. She was born June 24, 1912, in Hoisington, the daughter of
John and Mamie Colton Fitts. She married
Wellman Komarek Nov. 8, 1963, in
Hoisington. He died July 16, 1982. A lifetime resident of Hoisington, she
was a service representative for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.
Mrs. Komarek was a member of First Christian Church, Cameo Club and
Christian Women's Club, all of Hoisington.
Survivors include three grandchildren, Mark Henderson of Lenexa, Susan
Henderson of Almogorda, N.M., and Amy Scoville of Herperia, Calif. She was
preceded in death by one daughter, Dorothy Henderson; three brothers, John
Fitts, Allen Fitts and Mac Fitts; and five sisters, Daphne Gilley, Mary
Glynn, Ruby Fitts, Alice Fitts and Gladys Fitts.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hoisington cemetery with the
Rev. Paula Bell officiating. Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. Sunday and from
9 a.m. to service time Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home in
Hoisington. Memorials are suggested to the church or Clara Barton
Foundation, in care of the funeral home.

Oscar H. Bortz, 90, died April 28 at Hoisington Rehabilitation Center in
Hoisington. Survivors and funeral arrangements will be announced by

Martin Isern 1922-2000
ELLINWOOD - Martin Isern of Ellinwood, died April 28 at Central Kansas
Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. Survivors and funeral

Gilbert E. Mehl 1917-2000
LORRAINE - Gilbert E. Mehl, 82, died April 25 at Hutchinson Hospital in
Hutchinson. He was born May 25, 1917, in rural Ellsworth County, the son of
Fred and Anna Bender Mehl. He married
Ruth Reed Aug. 3, 1941, in Kanopolis.
She died Jan. 16, 1979. A longtime resident of Lorraine, he was a retired
farmer.
Mehl was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Holyrood.
Survivors include three sons, Gene Mehl of Hutchinson, Donald Mehl of
Donna, Texas, and Max Mehl of Woodward, Okla.; two daughters, Mary Mehl of
Hutchinson and Betty L. Beagley of Sterling; one sister, Clara Russell of
Holyrood; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church with the Rev. John Sharp
officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter's Lutheran Church cemetery in
Holyrood. Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. today at Sillin Funeral Home in
Lyons. Memorials are suggested to St. Peter's Lutheran Church in care of

Tyler Blaine Foss 1976-2000
BOULDER, Colo. - Tyler Blaine Foss, 23, died April 23 at his home. He was
born May 6, 1976, at Kansas City, the son of Daniel C. and Patricia A.
Brill Foss. He was a 1994 graduate of Hutchinson High School in Hutchinson,
attended Vanderbuilt University in Nashville, Tenn., and was attending the
University of Colorado in Boulder.
Foss was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.
Survivors include his parents of Hutchinson; one sister, Tara E. Carleton
of Kansas City, Mo.; and grand-parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Brill of Lewis.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Amanda Louise; and grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs. Don C. Foss.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in
Hutchinson with the Rev. William T. Soule officiating. Friends may call
from 1-9 p.m. today and Friday at Elliott Mortuary in Hutchinson. Burial
will be at the Memorial Park cemetery in Hutchinson. Memorials are
suggested to the Tyler Blaine Foss Memorial in care of the Hutchinson
Community Foundation.

Lorene S. Allen 1910-2000
STAFFORD - Lorene S. Allen, 90, died April 25 at Leisure Homestead in
Stafford. She was born Jan. 31, 1910, at Throckmorton, Texas, the daughter
of Sidney and Nellie D. Franklin Stewart. She married
B.R. "Bill" Allen
March 15, 1928, in Oklahoma. He died Sept. 6, 1978. A resident of Stafford
since 1997, coming from Raton, N.M., and Arkansas City. After retiring
from the telephone business, she and her husband owned and operated a motel
and restaurant in Raton.
Mrs. Allen was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Arkansas City and
the Central Plains Artists and Craftsmen.
Survivors include one son, B.G. "Bud" Allen of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one
daughter, Millicent "Sissie" Yarbrough of Stafford; two sisters, Edith
Gartman of Arlington, Texas, and Bessie Black of Conroe, Texas; 12
grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one
son, L. Maynard Allen; one brother, Anderson Stewart; and three sisters,
Lillian Davis, Eva Barger and Blanche Russell.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Riverview cemetery in
Arkansas City with the Rev. Kasey Crosby officiating. Friends may call from
4-8 p.m. today at Minnis Chapel in Stafford and from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at
Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. Memorials are suggested to the
donor's choice, in care of Minnis Chapel.

Lorene Dykes Gleason 1926-2000
LARNED - Lorene Dykes Gleason, 73, died April 24 at Kansas University
Medical Center in Kansas City. She was born July 17, 1926, in rural
Stafford County, the daughter of Orlie and Mary Dixon Dykes. She married
V.M. Gleason on Aug. 5, 1944, at Radium. A longtime resident of Pawnee
County, she was a homemaker, retired activity therapist at Larned State
Hospital and a volunteer at Fort Larned National Historical Site and United
Methodist Women's Thrift Shop, all in Larned.
Mrs. Gleason was a member of First United Methodist Church, Garden Club,
Daughters of the American Revolution, all of Larned, and Zook Community
Club of Zook.
Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Darryl Gleason and
Patrick Gleason, both of Larned; two daughters, Debra Kisner of Hays and
Karla Stevens of Normal, Ill.; one sister, Joy Ochel of Hudson; and four
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one infant sister, Darlene
Dykes.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Morell Funeral Home in Larned with
Revs. Bob Gleason and Charles Grant officiating. Burial will be at Larned
Cemetery in Larned. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. today, from 9 a.m to 8
p.m. Thursday, and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral
home. Memorials are suggested to Fort Larned Old Guard, in care of the
funeral home.

Charles J. Billinger 1916 -2000
ELLINWOOD - Charles J. Billinger, 83, died April 24 at Central Kansas
Medical Center, St. Rose Campus in Great Bend. He was born Sept. 6, 1916,
in St. Peter, the son of Joseph P. and Clara Reidel Billinger. He married
Beatrice Rome Nov. 27, 1945, at St. Peter. She died July 10, 1974. He
married Irene Harris June 26, 1977, at Great Bend. She died Dec. 7, 1996.
He married
June Buczinski Oct. 23, 1999, at Great Bend. A resident of
Barton County since 1945, coming from St. Peter, he was a carpenter for
Alvin Schneider Constructions and Marlett Homes.
Billinger was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellinwood, Knights
of Columbus in Hoisington, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111 and American
Legion Argonne Post 180, both of Great Bend, and past president of Cowboy
Sams of Barton County.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Charles P. Billinger of
Great Bend; three daughters, Toni Schneweis, Mary Ann Charles and Cecilia
Conrad, all of Hoisington; three stepsons, Larry Buczinski of Ellinwood,
Dan Buczinski of Wichita and Fred Vielhauer of Philadelphia, Pa.; four
stepdaughters, Christina Reed of Houston, Texas, Diana Rightmire of Kansas
City, Mo., Dolores Pratt of Albany, N.Y., and Diane Wilhelm of Great Bend;
one brother, Edmund Billinger of Denver, Colo.; four sisters, Mary Miller
of Hays, Clem Shives of Hoisington, Barb Knoll of Derby and Rosie Fabricius
of Great Bend; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 29
stepgrandchildren; and 28 stepgreat-grandchildren.
Vigil will be 7:30 p.m. tonight at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Great
Bend. Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the church with the Revs.
Warren Stecklein and David Flagor officiating. Burial will be at St. John's
Cemetery in Hoisington. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at
Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend, from 6:30-9 tonight at the
church and 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are
suggested to St. Patrick School Endowment Fund, St. Joseph School Endowment
Fund and Hoisington Baseball Program, all in care of the funeral home.
